Annual Report

2015 A celebration of 10 years supporting and enriching the quality of life on Nantucket

Our Mission Our mission is to strengthen Nantucket now and for future generations through informed philanthropy and community leadership. In pursuit of this mission we act as a:

Steward – by creating and managing funds to ensure a legacy for charitable solutions

Grant Maker – by awarding grants through the Nantucket Fund™ and donor-directed funds that respond to pressing needs Charitable Resource – by maintaining in-depth knowledge of the non-profit sector, and by providing resources for donors, non-profits, and the community

Catalyst – by mobilizing community leadership to affect collaborative solutions for Nantucket’s most critical issues

Ten years ago a small group of special people got together and started the Community Foundation for Nantucket. With the support of a handful of donors, a Community Grants fund was established to support Island nonprofits, which distributed $26,000 in its first grant cycle. Today that fund is The Nantucket Fund™ which, thanks to your support, awarded $140,000 in community grants in 2015. In our tenth anniversary year we created a new Strategic Plan to help us navigate the next decade. It was determined that the best way forward is to focus our efforts on the Nantucket Fund™, and we have begun the preliminary work to substantially grow this Fund with the support of several major donors. Together with Island thought leaders, we continue to focus on the core issues Nantucket faces – affordable housing, mental health and substance abuse, childhood development and access to childcare, affordable yearround transportation, embracing our community’s diversity, and elder care and support. Many thanks to our community roundtable participants who helped us keep a spotlight on Island challenges. We also thank our local nonprofit leadership for their participation in many Community Foundation sponsored initiatives, including programs that foster best practices and collaboration among our important Island organizations. The added value a Community Foundation brings is undeniable. In 2015, the Foundation awarded grants totaling $850,000 to Nantucket charities for specific initiatives that are important to sustaining our vibrant community. We thank you for helping us improve the quality of life here on Nantucket. With our gratitude,

Victoria McManus Margaretta Andrews President Executive Director

Nantucket Bike Rack Project Fund Teckie and Don Shackelford spearheaded an effort to purchase new bike racks for our Public Schools in 2011. They pooled donations into a project fund, in hopes the new racks would encourage more students riding their bikes to school.

Duxtucket Paddle Babes Giving Circle In 2014, a group of avid platform tennis players from Duxbury and Nantucket raised the funds for a grant to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Neuroblastoma Research Program after a successful Platform Tennis weekend in Nantucket in honor of the niece of a long-time participant.

Nantucket Wheelers Partner Fund “Setting up our fund with the Community Foundation for Nantucket gave us the extraordinary opportunity to devote our time and energy solely to fundraising and implementation, rather than on board meetings, paperwork, and filings with the state, while still allowing our sponsors and donors to make a tax free contribution. - Darcy Creech, the inspiration behind this program created in 2013.

Giving is Good for Your Health.

The Americans’ Changing Lives study is the oldest, ongoing national study of social, psychological and behavioral factors in health. Researchers from the National Institute of Aging started with a representative cross-section of the U.S. population in 1986 and have followed those survivors for the past 25 years. ACL is the first—but certainly not the only—study to determine that volunteerism and giving is good for your physical and mental health. Making charitable donations triggers the brain’s reward center, the same way food and sex do; researchers call it a “helper’s high.”

How We're Making a Difference with grants

Community Education The Alliance for Substance Use Prevention used a Nantucket Fund™ grant to hire a speaker from an organization called Operation Parent to give two presentations to parents, caregivers and community members, on the issues of Social Media and Facts about Drugs and Alcohol. “The Community Foundation for Nantucket is a valuable asset to our community at large as it provides funding for many important initiatives that otherwise would not come to fruition.”

- Holly McGowan, President of A.S.A.P.

Emergency Pet Services for Families in Need The Nantucket Fund™ supported the Lucky Whiskers and Wags Program at Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals, offering financial aid to people with an acutely ill or injured pet. “The Community Foundation for Nantucket promotes community by helping Nantucketers support local causes: CFN helps Nantucketers help Nantucketers!”

- Pam Murphy, NSHA

7

Each year our Nantucket Fund™ grant recipients report back on how our support enables them to better fulfill their missions. Some significant community initiatives are featured below.

Increased Local Oncology Services The Nantucket Fund™ helped Swim Across America ensure that all net proceeds of the annual Nantucket Swim go towards cancer treatment and patient care on Nantucket. “The Community Foundation for Nantucket helps all Nantucketers – those in need and those like us that want to help other islanders; by helping us to ‘connect the dots’ and have the most positive impact we can on our community.”

- Jenny Paradis, Swim Across America Nantucket

Sensory Art for S.T.A.R. The Nantucket Fund™ supported Nantucket Sports and Therapeutic/Accessible Recreation in 2015 specifically to underwrite a Sensory Art class in collaboration with the Nantucket Artists Association. Gabriella Psaradelis, frequent participant in Nantucket STAR programs, showed off her completed work at our annual Grants Recipients Breakfast.

Margaret “Peggy” Nash Gifford August 3, 1930 – December 25, 2015 Peggy Gifford was one of the original founders of the Community Foundation and its first President of the Board of Trustees. Peggy lived a full life devoted to helping others and improving the lives of the people in communities where she lived. She always wanted to know what she could do to help. She will be remembered for her boundless energy, her inability to say "no" to a request, her love of her family, her pride in her grandchildren and her smile.

How We're Making a Difference with funds

Nepalese Disaster Relief “After the Community Foundation sponsored the NHA’s Celebration of Nepal, we turned to them once again to help with the fundraising efforts of those trying to help the more than 8 million people of Nepal affected by the devastating earthquake in June,” says Marjan Shirzad, Director of Visitor Experience at the NHA. The Foundation immediately established a charitable fund to hold the hundreds of donations made in support of this effort, and then issued grants totaling $20,000 to the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders for their efforts in Nepal.

11

The Community Foundation holds many funds created by Nantucketers who want to partner with us to support a community initiative or address a specific need. A few examples of how these funds helped in 2015 are below.

Culinary Kids Congratulations to the Culinary Arts Team at the Nantucket High School for winning the ProStart Invitational Competition on March 3, 2015 hosted at the Hill View Country Club in North Reading, Massachusetts. The Community Foundation for Nantucket is honored to hold two funds to support this program, and thrilled to see such great success come from it.

Support for Youth Services In 2015, the Nantucket License Plate committee pre-sold 1500 Nantucket-unique license plates, the proceeds of which benefit our Island children. In 2015, the Nantucket License Plate Fund awarded grants of over $43,000 to 18 partners working with Nantucket children, including $10,500 to the Nantucket Fund™ designated for children’s services.

10th Anniversary Celebration at the Ottisons

As our tenth year was in full swing, CFN Trustee Susan Ottison and her husband Karl generously hosted a gathering of friends and family to celebrate the Foundation’s success, and to recognize outgoing Board President Phil Stambaugh. Phil was one of the first trustees of the organization, and its second President, a position he held for 6 years. CFN Trustee Bob Felch (top left) gave a heartfelt tribute to Phil (bottom right) at the event. He worked tirelessly on our behalf, and we allowed him to retire in 2015 with our gratitude.
