EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REPORT Ann Scott
As the Nantucket Atheneum’s newest Director, I am pleased to report that the Atheneum is a thriving hub for the Nantucket community. The Atheneum is a crystal clear example of why libraries are essential. We serve a vital mission in both today’s and tomorrow’s community. The vision that has driven public libraries for the past 3,000 years is in service of a better tomorrow: offering hope through knowledge, empowering the individual, and energizing a sense of community. Since joining the Atheneum, I have been pleased to discover how well we align our work with this vision.
Internet Access The library uses the internet to push the passions and possibilities of our communities to the whole world. Yes, folks can use the internet connection to check mail and apply for jobs, but they can also use it to create businesses and start global conversations.
Literacy and Reading The library allows you to explore the great thoughts and imaginations of the world throughout time, and add to that pool. Come to the library, get inspired, and add your great ideas.
Democracy Did you know your government came with an owner’s manual? It’s at the library. Help shape the direction of your town, your state, your country: the library can help you learn how.
Annual | 8 | Report
Education We help you discover knowledge not found in any textbook, and we find opportunities for innovation, creating interactive programs for childlike minds of all ages.
Cultural Enrichment We offered over 1350 free programs that were attended by more than 27,000 visitors of all ages. These programs ranged from lectures and author talks and classes, to music and dance and art. You are our partners in this content creation, and we rely on you to dream and strive and express so that we can ensure a word of opportunities to support you. And we rely on the goodwill and the generosity of our friends to support 75% of these efforts through private donations. We are grateful for the commitment of the Nantucket Atheneum community in keeping this work alive for generations to come and for the support of our Board of Trustees, our extraordinary staff and volunteers.

The Literacy Volunteers of the Atheneum continue to offer free conversational English classes and individual tutoring to non-native speakers. Now in its 15th year, the program is run by volunteers who teach weekly classes and meet with students individually. This year the LVA offered 91 classes and the Atheneum hosted 67 individual tutoring sessions as well as two ELL workshops for LVA tutors. Finally, the Atheneum provided meeting rooms for civic and community engagement as well as study space for patrons in need of a quiet place to work. These rooms were used over 1,500 times last year.

REFERENCE DEPARTMENT The Reference and Special Collections Department welcomed Jim Borzilleri as a permanent member of the Great Hall team this year; the entire staff is delighted by his analytic mind and helping hands. This year the Reference staff answered more than 3,700 reference & service requests, obtained 119 specialized research items, and several classrooms of student groups learned about library research services. Public computers continue to be a popular and well-used service. However the Great Hall is not only a place where community members have access to the Internet; it is a place where island community members become better digital citizens. For this past year, the reference page and main page on the Atheneum website have links for patrons to check on their voting status or register to vote. In addition, our technology education extends beyond typing skills and email; our computers provide access to information about health, jobs, and connections to family or community. To facilitate our community’s wide interests and needs, the Reference department has highlighted various databases, and every other month we highlight innovation in topics like ‘Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure’, ‘Psychology Collection’ and ‘America’s GenealogyBank’. Moreover, we continue to offer access to Lynda.com for practical education on a variety of subjects, including software tools used every day in business. The library staff will continue to meet the Atheneum mission to ensure everyone in our community has access to reliable information, the Internet and employment information and training.

DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT The Development Department continued to raise increased support through the generosity and interest of the community. The 2019 Annual Giving Campaign raised over $550,000 under the skilled leadership of Board of Trustee member Maureen Graf. The 17th Annual Cold Turkey Plunge held on November 22, 2018 resulted in more than 800 people taking the plunge with $105,000 raised in support of programs and services for the Weezie Library for Children—a new record for this event. The library ran three used book sales in FY19 with the help of our many dedicated volunteers. The annual summer book sale took place in August 2018 followed by another during Stroll 2018 and the final sale was over Daffodil weekend in 2019. The Atheneum’s major fundraiser, the Nantucket Atheneum Dance Festival, July 22–27, 2019, held two performances at the Nantucket High School auditorium. The performances featured internationally acclaimed dancers from New York City Ballet, L.A. Dance Project, American Ballet Theatre and Pacific Northwest Ballet under Artistic Director Tyler Angle. Outreach events included a children’s program, youth master classes for aspiring dance students, a film screening of Benjamin Millepied’s Hearts & Arrows and an insightful lecture/ demonstration led by Artistic Director Tyler Angle. Under the skilled leadership of our Dance Chair Randee Seiger and with corporate sponsorship from Tradewind Aviation, the festival raised much needed revenue to support the Atheneum’s annual operating budget. BUILDING & GROUNDS Maintaining wooden structures on Nantucket is an ongoing process. The Weezie Library for Children’s porch received major repair including—laying mahogany treads and decking, replacing rails and balusters, and rebuilding columns with cedar. The east and south sides of the Atheneum’s main historic building were painted.
The roofs of the Kynett Wing and Weezie Library were reshingled, and to
further protect the outdoor HVAC units, a section of fence was replaced and vented covers installed to shield the units from storm damage.
Extensive pruning of garden
trees, removal of a hawthorn tree, and treatments to suppress the honey locust pod gall were applied. Extending the brick sidewalk area allowed for installation of a 1939 World’s Fair style chess table and benches. Generously donated by Judy and John Belash, the chess table is a welcome addition to the garden and is used by a wide age-range of enthusiasts.
A new server was installed and the port switch capacity expanded on the
network operating system. The power surge box for the telephone system and six staff computers were replaced. A high top worktable for processing books was purchased, as well as six lightweight, foldable craft tables and 20 more stacking chairs to accommodate well attended public programs.
The multi-year art conservation project to refurbish a portion of the
Atheneum’s collection of oil paintings and frames continued. This year’s Community Preservation Grant funding allowed for conservation treatment of three paintings from the ship portrait series: Memnon, Surprise, and N.B. Palmer.
