Community Foundation for Nantucket Peggy Gifford Retires During the coming year, Peggy Gifford will be stepping down as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Peggy was one of the original founders and presided over the early years to make sure the Foundation got off to a good start and that its operations were well funded. Because of her experience with the Community Foundation in Toledo, OH, she knew how important a Community Foundation could be to Nantucket. Peggy was an indefatigable advocate and fundraiser. We won’t let her go far away!
CFNan Aids Marla Ceely Lamb Fund Early last spring, it became apparent that the Marla Ceely Lamb Fund needed an infusion. A special fund created to defray the costs of transportation and lodging for patients who must travel off-island for cancer treatment, the Lamb Fund has seen the number of patients served per year more than triple since its inception. Community Foundation Trustee Joe Hale and his wife Linda proposed a match of up to $2500 through their CFNan Donor Advised Fund for all donations made to the Fund through the Foundation from May 15 through June 30, 2011. Thanks to their generosity, Marla’s family and friends, and the Nantucket community, the Foundation presented a check in July for $8110 to Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket, who administers this fund.
“ We were so grateful to the Community Foundation and to Mr. and Mrs. Hale for their ready willingness to help support this very worthwhile cause, and we were equally grateful for the response of the community in helping us raise enough to take advantage of the match! Not only did the grant infuse some much needed money into the fund, but also highlighted the cause to the community.” —Ginnie Faria, Coordinator of Marla Ceely Lamb Fund

2011 The Year in Review The year 2011 marked the five year anniversary of the founding of the Community Foundation for Nantucket. Our growth and positive impact on our island community are due primarily to our donors’ generosity, for which we are truly thankful, as well as the help and guidance of our Trustees and Advisory Committee members. We celebrate our early successes and progress, and feel the next five years will see your Community Foundation become an even more significant factor in helping all of the people of Nantucket through philanthropy, community collaboration and outreach. Perhaps the most exciting news of 2011 is that the Nantucket community is no longer asking, “What is the Community Foundation?” Our phones ring regularly now, and in the course of a week, we receive a wide range of inquiries—from donors about how to set up a Giving Club to questions from our fund holders about charitable grants through their Donor Advised Funds. The most frequently asked questions last year came from organizations that are doing great things in our community, asking how the Community Foundation can help them be even more effective. In 2011, we were able to make it easier for several small organizations on Nantucket to fulfill their missions to help our Island. Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals, Friends of the Hummock Pond Road Bike Path, and the Nantucket Book Festival all approached us. In all three cases, we were able to create a Fund at the Foundation to receive charitable donations, and ease their administrative burden.
Other highlights from 2011include: •
Our human services initiative, working with the Healthy Community Collaborative, moved forward with a proposed Asset Mapping Project, a community-wide endeavor to identify and best utilize assets that already exist within our community to address current needs
•
$41,300 in Discretionary Grants was made to 25 charities serving the Nantucket community. During the four years since the inception of the Discretionary Grants Fund by the ’Sconset Chapel Outreach Fund, over $130,000 has been granted, primarily to Island human services nonprofits
•
Assets under management by the Community Foundation grew 73% to $1.3 million
•
The number of philanthropic funds administered by the Community Foundation grew from 18 to 26, up 44% over the previous year
•
117 individuals and businesses made donations to support the operations of the Foundation, totaling $131,000
We really can make it easy to care for Nantucket, and we’re here to help. Give us a call and see what we can do.

Animal Shelter gets assistance from CFNan When the MSPCA announced in October that they would be closing the Animal Shelter, a group of concerned individuals made up of former Shelter employees and volunteers, a vet tech, and local business owners got together to figure out a solution. Nantucket’s stray and homeless animals had to have a home and be cared for every day. Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals (NSHA) was formed and they began the process of obtaining their 501c3
Pam Murphy and Lori Smith (and Milo) of Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals
charitable status, which can take several months to process and approve. The Community Foundation stepped in to become the charitable conduit through which individuals could make tax deductible donations to support these animals right now, and not wait for the IRS designation. The Foundation was pleased to provide this service to this worthy organization, and to help highlight the need for support of our lost and abandoned animals. A terrific addendum to this story was when the Foundation’s graphic designer, Eileen Powers, took the photo Eileen Powers and Milo; Milo swimming near his new home.
(above) for an ad about this new fund, she fell in love with and adopted Milo— an 8-year old black Lab—what a wonderful new beginning for everyone!

Hummock Pond Road Bike Path and Fund Traffic to Cisco Beach and the businesses along Hummock Pond Road has exploded in recent years as beach goers, surfers, residents, young adults and families make their way to the Cisco/Hummock Pond area. Recognizing that this road is a public safety issue to all that use this roadway, the Friends of the Hummock Pond Road Bike Path began a joint effort between private citizens of Nantucket and Town planners to complete a bike path that will stretch for 2.6 miles along the southern side of Hummock Pond Road, from the end of the Milk Street extension to the Cisco Beach parking lot. This group established a Fund with the Community Foundation to accept private donations and pledges on behalf of the Town of Nantucket so that all contributions would be tax deductible. Raising additional money privately for financing the bike path will help reduce the burden on Nantucket taxpayers—donations to this Fund will go toward offsetting the cost of construction. With the private donations coming into the
