Community Foundation for Nantucket
Annual Report
2010
“ The funding provided through the Community Foundation was a godsend. Without it we would have had to stop accepting applications.” — Janis Carreiro, Director, NRAP The Nantucket Rental Assistance Program was established to address a critical need for affordable year-round housing for its full-time residents. Assistance is limited to those in a short-term financial crisis.

The Community Foundation for Nantucket is one of 736 community foundations helping their communities across the country. There are even more around the world. While Nantucket’s community foundation is relatively new, many residents are familiar with the tremendous benefits provided by community foundations. In Massachusetts, there are community foundations operating on Martha’s Vineyard, Woods Hole, Cape Cod, Lowell, Boston, Cambridge, Brookline, Worcester, Essex County, Southeastern Massachusetts, Western Massachusetts, North Central Massachusetts, Metro West, and more. Here is a list of the 10 largest community foundations in the U.S. Some have been connecting donors with community needs for over 100 years. 1. Tulsa Community Foundation 2. Community F i n a nFoundation cials for Nantucket Dear Friends,
Thank you for helping to make the Community Foundation for Nantucket’s fourth year a wonderful success as we continued our work in helping to solve the challenges our Island faces, by bringing together people that care with causes that matter. We are proud to say that many of our 2010 goals were met because of good people like you endorsing the work of CFNan through your talent, caring and financial contributions. Because of you: •
$90,000 in grants were distributed to 58 Island organizations
•
Assets grew 42% to $750,000
•
Charitable Funds administered grew 100% to 18
Our “awareness campaign” has been a great success in helping Nantucketers understand the role CFNan plays on the Island. Our video, “An Island Community,” is a wonderful and moving tribute to the work of CFNan and the organizations it helps. This video has been particularly successful in spreading our message. Special thanks to Dan Driscoll of September Productions and CFNan Trustee Ann Colgrove for their skills, talent and time. Please visit our website, www.CFNan.org, to view this wonderful project. We believe that the Community Foundation for Nantucket should be a leader in helping to solve community issues. In 2010, CFNan recognized that human services providers were struggling with decreasing donations and increasing workloads—like many of us, trying to do more with less. Our Board decided to fund a “Human Services Initiative.” Gaining the support of Nantucket’s Board of Selectmen and working with the Nantucket Healthy Community Collaborative, this Initiative is aimed at helping the local human service providers deliver the most efficient and effective services to the greatest number of people in need, creating a delivery system of care that is worthy of everyone’s support (see page 2). Much has been accomplished, and this work will continue through 2011. With your continued support, the Community Foundation for Nantucket (CFNan) looks forward to continuing our work in 2011. Thank you! Sincerely,
Phillip F. Stambaugh

HUMAN SERVICES INITIATIVE FOR THOSE IN NEED, finding the best help among Nantucket’s many human service agencies got a little easier this spring with help from the Community Foundation for Nantucket. CFNan’s goal in funding this Human Services Initiative was to help create a strategic plan for Nantucket to identify gaps and redundancies in services, identify underserved populations and to locate possible funding sources. Most recently, the initiative has developed and published directories, arranged by type of service, to the myriad of local human service groups. Available in printed and downloadable on-line formats, the directory listings will help Nantucket residents to more quickly and easily find organizations or individuals who provide the services they most need. Ned Robinson-Lynch, a well-known consultant to nonprofits in our region, was hired to develop a comprehensive study of Nantucket’s human services. Robinson-Lynch interviewed 45 local service providers and other local “key stakeholders” in the human services area. “There’s a wealth of service providers here who desire to do more and do it better,” said Lynch. “They needed a catalyst like the Community Foundation for Nantucket. Nantucket is now a leader in doing this.” In addition to the recently published directories of local service groups and services, CFNan continues to work closely with the Nantucket Healthy Community Collaborative to distribute the new directories, and to develop and carry out future recommendations of the Human Services Initiative, which continues into 2011.
CFNan Boosts Rental Assistance FOR A TIME EARLIER last year, it looked as if Nantucket’s critical Rental Assistance Program might have to turn away people who needed help. Due to the troubled national and local economies, the Nantucket Rental Assistance Program, which gives short-term help to Nantucket residents in year-round housing, was seeing heavy demand. “Our numbers tripled in the last two years,” said Janis Carreiro, Program NRAP Board members Kevin Dugan, Director. “We were running out of funds.” Terry Anne Vigil, Georgia Ann Snell and The Community Foundation for Nantucket Jennifer Brooks stepped in to help the program get through the spring, by finding a private donor willing to match contributions to the Rental Assistance Program made through CFNan. “That literally kept us in business through April and May,” said Carreiro.
The Rental Assistance Program, organized by the Nantucket Interfaith Council, provides help for those in trouble with their rent and who are in danger of becoming homeless or having to face leaving the Island. The program also helps individuals and families to move from temporary or unsafe facilities into legal housing. The program focuses especially on long time Nantucket residents. Joblessness and medical emergencies are leading causes of the need for rental assistance, according to Carreiro. Approved rental payments are made directly to landlords, not to exceed a total of $3,000 in an 18-month period. No payback is required, although recipients are encouraged to donate back to the community in some way once their finances improve.
Tuition Aid for Families from Nantucket Golf Club Foundation FOR OVER EIGHT YEARS, Nantucket Golf Club Foundation has generously provided assistance to Nantucket families who need help with tuition for pre-school and day care programs. This aid from Nantucket Golf Club goes to an average of 30 – 40 families annually, with the program administered by Nantucket’s Community Network for Children. However, the process of getting the tuition assistance to the service providers was a bit of a challenge, and required several weeks to process. In their search for possible solutions, Pauline Nantucket Golf Club’s president, Fred Green, Proch from the Community Network for Nantucket Golf Club Foundation’s Executive Children and Leslie Bresette from the Golf Director, Tom Bresette with CFNan Executive Club Foundation met with the Community Director, Margaretta Andrews Foundation for Nantucket. The Golf Club Foundation quickly realized the advantage of creating a Named Fund with CFNan. CFNan was able to streamline funding to the providers from several weeks to several days. As a result, more small in-home providers are willing to provide care for families who meet the requirements for assistance, and all providers are paid in a timely manner. This is a wonderful example of how We make it easy to care for Nantucket.

A Donor-Advised Fund is the fastest growing Teckie and Don Shackelford charitable giving vehicle in the United States. More than 125,000 donor-advised accounts have been established, holding over $27 billion in assets. The New York Community Trust, a community foundation, pioneered the development of donor-advised funds in 1931. Since then the field has greatly expanded as commercial sponsors, educational institutions, and independent charities started offering the service. Donor-advised funds at the Community Foundation for Nantucket reached nearly $260,000 as of 12/31/2010.
