Nantucket: The Power of Place

one of the most rewarding aspects of this job, among many, is the privilege of getting to know you who support our work.

Your stories describing your attraction to Nantucket are often riveting. There is the story of a young woman who was asked in art class to draw a picture of a perfect place. She had no idea why she drew a view of a harbor surrounded by gentle hills topped by church steeples. In her picture, two children played on the beach. The art teacher asked the student if she had ever been to Nantucket. She had not. Subsequently, the family brought her here, and they all enjoyed it so much they began looking for a home. Imagine their surprise when they visited one home that oﬀered the very view imagined years earlier. Then there is the story of a woman who as a young mother was watching her children play on Steps Beach. At that moment she had an epiphany: She wanted nothing more than to ensure that her children were able to enjoy the natural and historic beauty of this place as much as she has. Today, this woman is one of our most enthusiastic supporters.

The stories are as numberless as they are fascinating; there is a magnetic allure to this “far-away place” that defies description. Yet, stories like those above serve to explain this allure. The Nantucket Historical Association is the key caretaker of our island’s stories. Since 1894, an aﬀection for this island and its history has been the value that binds us. We are all part of something important that long preceded us and will long outlive us. And we care greatly. Perhaps Walt Whitman captures this best in Crossing Brooklyn Ferry: …I am with you, you men and women of a generation, or ever so many generations hence, Just as you feel when you look on the river and sky, so I felt, Just as any of you is one of a living crowd, I was one of a crowd, Just as you are refresh’d by the gladness of the river and the bright flow, I was refresh’d, Just as you stand and lean on the rail, yet hurry with the swift current, I stood, yet was hurried, Just as you look on the numberless masts of ships and thick-stem’d pipes of steamboats, I look’d. . . .

NHA—Keeper of Nantucket’s Heart and Soul

i am in love with nantucket. crazy, grinning, heart-zinging love. i feel such joy when i am here, and such a sense of truly being home. I feel centered, at peace, and grateful. I treasure every day. And I love talking about Nantucket with anyone else who loves it, too. Like ardent alums, we enjoy trading treasured memories, favorite places, beloved friends. It seems our affection only grows stronger and deeper the more it is shared. And while we all may have different reasons for why we love this place so, Nantucket resonates within each of us as our true center, our real home. What is it about this place? “Why,” as a young summer resident once asked his mother, “does this place feel more like home than home does?” There is a strong sense of place here. It is how Nantucket looks, how it feels, what it is like to belong here, how people think here. And there is a strong sense of history here. Nantucket’s past is ever present. We live with historic streets and buildings. And thanks to the Nantucket Historical Association, we can hear old stories through oral histories, glimpse views long gone in old photographs, touch real pieces of the past that let us imagine what life was like before our time here. The NHA is a keeper of Nantucket’s heart and soul. Our stories are safe here; they are told in engaging programs, at core properties, by remarkable people, the esteemed staff of the NHA. This is why I have been so committed to the work of the NHA. It allows our understanding of this special place to grow deeper—our understanding, too, of ourselves and our neighbors in this strong and wonderful community. I am grateful that the NHA is here, to gather and safeguard all the bits and pieces that feed the soul of this place—the stories, the photographs and paintings, the creations of all kind, the artifacts, the buildings—all pieces of Nantucket’s soul. And, I am grateful to all of our members and supporters for all you do to help the NHA capture and hold onto all the things that make Nantucket so special, so much our true home. I am happy to be a part of the NHA community and to do everything I can to help.

Strategic Plan Goals, 2008 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2013 Programs The NHA will design and deliver engaging, artifact-based educational exhibitions, programs, and activities pertaining to Nantucket history and its material culture. Strategies include enhancing our interpretive programs at our historic properties, promoting our exhibition and program schedules, and encouraging and monitoring participation in our programs by the community.

Collections & Properties The NHA will develop and manage its collections, including its properties, in order to enhance its role as a leader in preserving and interpreting Nantucket history. Strategies include continuing to document our collections and properties, expanding access to collections, and continuing to build collections that capture the history of Nantucket Island and its people.

Audiences & Access The NHA will reach out and serve diverse audiences as a year-round organization. Strategies include developing programs, both contemporary and historical, that reflect, respect, and engage the diversity of Nantucket residents, and promoting these programs year round.

Organizational EďŹ&#x20AC;ectiveness The NHA will secure and prudently manage the human and financial resources required to support its mission and strategic plan. Strategies include promoting policies that enhance its programs, its collections, including properties, and its reputation.

Achievements Welcomed more than 69,000 visitors to the Whaling Museum,

Historic Sites, and Walking Tours. Presented eighty-nine public programs, from lectures to family

festivals, serving 5,234 visitors. Engaged 1,132 community members at the twenty-two weekly Food

for Thought presentations held during the spring, fall, and winter months. Enhanced outreach to 2,654 members and engaged them through member morning programs, the annual meeting, exhibition openings, and collections tours. Restored the Fire Hose Cart House to tell the story of firefighting on the island with video presentations and displays of historic equipment, including the restored pumpers Cataract No. 6 and Siasconset.

Appointed the ﬁrst recipient of the endowed Obed Macy Research Chair to expand the scope and reach of the Research Library and its significant collections, and expanded the NHA Research Fellows program. Completed the “greening” of the Whaling Museum, Museum Shop,

and administrative oﬃces with the installation of more than a thousand LED lights, which reduced energy use by 9.5 percent and realized savings of close to $12,000 in the first year.

Hosted at the Whaling Museum and Historic Sites forty-two onand oﬀ-island school and youth groups that included more than 1,200 students. Partnered with major island organizations: the Artists Association of Nantucket, Community Foundation for Nantucket, Egan Maritime Institute, Nantucket Book Festival, Nantucket Preservation Trust, Maria Mitchell Association, Nantucket Atheneum, Nantucket Community Music Center, Nantucket Fire Department, Sherburne Commons, and Theatre Workshop of Nantucket as well as the island’s public and private schools.

Achievements

Attracted a record one hundred twenty-seven applications for seven NHA summer internship positions in the curatorial, education, horticulture, and visitor experience departments. Provided Hands-On History crafts classes in the Whaling Museum’s Discovery Room for 1,323 children in July and August. Completed the eighth successful year of programs at the 1800 Bunny Williams signing her book An Aﬀair with a House at the designer Luncheon

House, oﬀering fifty classes in historic decorative arts and crafts and serving more than three hundred participants. Reached out to island youth with a series of 1800 House arts and

crafts classes at the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club and Nantucket High School. Continued two popular exhibitions: Nantucket’s Cabinet of Curiosities:

historic arts and crafts at the 1800 house

A to Z in the Peter Foulger Gallery and Eastman Johnson and His Contemporaries: An Exhibition of Late Nineteenth-Century Masters on Nantucket in the Whitney Gallery at the Research Library. Awarded for the second year the NHA Scholarship and for the tenth

year the Edwin L. Greenberg Book Award to graduating seniors at Nantucket High School. Hosted the ﬁrst Designer Luncheon and the Designer Panel at the

35th August Antiques Show—the NHA’s major fund-raising event—to highlight incorporating antiques into interior design. Expanded the Museum Shop’s selections of high-quality

reproductions and gifts, including a Nantucket Windsor chair, sailors valentines, scrimshaw, and china, inspired by the collections and exhibitions. The NHA’s award-winning film Nantucket was the top seller for the second year. nikolay nakov, recipient of the nhA Scholarship

Achievements

Employed more than thirty year-round and forty seasonal staﬀ, making the NHA one of the largest employers on Nantucket. Received grants from the Cape Cod Five Foundation, Community

Foundation for Nantucket, M. S. Worthington Foundation, Nantucket Community Preservation Committee, ReMain Nantucket, and Tupancy-Harris Foundation for education, public programs, and property renovations.

nhA members enjoy the view and new furnishings on the rooftop during the exhibition opening at the Whaling Museum.

Provided historic venues for twenty-six rental events—weddings,

corporate and fund-raising events, and parties of all kinds—at the Whaling Museum, Greater Light, the Hadwen House Garden, and the Quaker Meeting House. Opened new artifact-rich exhibits in the Hadwen & Barney Oil & Candle Factory and transformed the Whaling Museum’s Nantucket Corner Gallery into a welcoming interactive space to explore the collections.

Collaborated with Nantucket High School on the “Nantucket

History” class, providing classroom presentations by curators and welcoming students for tours of the Gosnold Center collections-storage facility and the Research Library.

Presented the world-premiere exhibition Lost on a Reef: The Nantucket Whaleship Two Brothers in partnership with the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and opened the Nantucket in the Civil War exhibit in the Whaling Museum. Received the John A. and Katherine S. Lodge Stewardship Award

from the Nantucket Preservation Trust for the Research Library’s photograph archive of more than sixty thousand photographic images. In 2012, two thousand were scanned and added to the database, bringing the number of online searchable images to nearly twenty-four thousand. Provided reproductions of images for eleven books, ten magazines, four films, ten businesses, five newspapers and magazines, twenty-one nonprofit organizations, and fifty individuals.

Achievements

Represented the NHA at conferences of the American Association of State and Local History, the Textile Society of America, the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture, the Twenty-third Annual Scrimshaw Symposium, the New England Museum Association, and Philanthropy Day on Cape Cod. 2012 August Antiques Show committee

Invested in staﬀ professional-development programs, including those of the Getty Museum Leadership Institute; A Visitor Evaluation Workshop; Foundation Center grant-writing and fund-raising seminars; a retreat at Billings Farm & Museum in Woodstock, Vermont; and the allstaﬀ visit to the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. Engaged nearly four hundred organizations and volunteers through special events, administration, educational and curatorial initiatives. Expanded relations with the Nantucket schools, including the

Museum in My School initiative at the Nantucket Elementary School, which introduced students to the NHA and its collections and produced standards-based, relevant social studies and science curriculums. Improved computer technology to enhance services to members,

Continued the digitizing of the NHA’s collection of Nantucket films

and making them available to the public on YouTube and Nantucket Community Television and partnered with Adam Matthew Education to digitize materials. Accessioned 175 groups of Nantucket-related artifacts and documents

that were donated to the collections or purchased by the NHA. Contributed to the vibrancy of downtown Nantucket during the Young nantucket dancers at “A night of holiday Magic”

winter holidays with special events at the Whaling Museum. The Festival of Wreaths, featuring an exhibit and silent auction of eighty-nine decorated wreaths, drew more than two thousand visitors; and the Festival of Trees, featuring of ninety-three trees decorated by islanders, was attended by more than 4,000 visitors.

Friends of the Nantucket Historical Association

the friends of the nantucket historical Association was established in 1986 to seek signiﬁcant acquisitions for the nhA collections, to contribute to the appropriate housing and restoration of those acquisitions, and to provide funds necessary to make such acquisitions and contributions that are both desired by the curators and approved by the friends. In celebration of its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2011, the Friends of the NHA published Island Treasures: Gifts of the Friends of the Nantucket Historical Association, 1986–2011, by Benjamin Simons, Robyn & John Davis Chief Curator, which documents the Friends’ extraordinary contributions to the collections, including a Walter Folger Jr. tall-case clock (1993.38.1), over the past quarter century.
