2010 Cheviot Journal
Meet the President John Eaton, Jr. Dear Fellow Cheviot Breeders and Enthusiasts: I am honored that the board has selected me to serve as your new president. 2009 was a transitional year for our association. Thanks to the dedication of our directors and the patience of our membership, it was a fairly smooth one. In June, we hired Jeff Ebert of Kansas as our new Executive Secretary. Jeff brings much enthusiasm and many new ideas to our organization. We look forward to working with Jeff as we continue to promote and grow the Cheviot breed. If you have any ideas or questions, please do not hesitate to contact him. Located on page 17 of this year’s Cheviot Journal is a copy of our Treasurer’s report that was handed out to the members at the Annual meeting in Louisville. Not everyone travels to the annual meeting and we felt it was important for all members to know that we are financially stable. You couldn’t turn on the TV this past year without some sort of dreary news on the faltering economy. Changes made to the registration and transfer fee schedule enacted in late 2008 along with using a new printer four the Cheviot Journal resulted in a major improvement to our net income. Your board is continuously looking for new ways to increase revenue, cut costs and become more efficient. I think the fact that we were able to turn around our financial situation during this time is a testament to their dedication to the membership. I want to welcome three newly elected board members who will serve for 2010 - 2012, David Clyde (East), Roger Smith (West Central) and Dan Dinova (West). Roger was a past board member of our association, while David and Dan are new to the position within our organization. The board has numerous ideas they are striving to implement in 2010. One of those is to make the website more complete. They want our membership to be able to go to the website and get whatever information or resources they need, such as downloadable sale entry forms and registration forms or news regarding our association or deadlines. If you have any items or ideas you want to see included on there, please contact any of our directors so that we can take them into consideration. The board is also looking at more ways to involve and support our junior association so that it can grow and prosper. I want to thank outgoing board members David Schambow and Penny Dodds for their service and commitment they gave to our organization. Long time director Alvin Shoop retired from his directorship at this years meeting. The entire society owes Alvin a debt of thanks for all he has done for the Cheviot breed for so many years. As a show of their appreciation, the association voted Alvin in as an Honorary Director. Once again our National sale will be held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield Illinois on June 18th and 19th. Many sheep coming out of last years sale went on to be very successful for their buyers at major shows across the country. I encourage everyone to attend this event as it is a very good sale to select genetics from many top breeders. It is also a great event to meet and socialize with many of your fellow Cheviot breeders and friends and share ideas. This year we will be having our National meeting held in conjunction with this event instead of at Louisville. We felt it would result in a larger turnout and allow for input from more of our membership. More information on this will follow from Jeff. Our Junior association continues to grow with the guidance of Holliday Converse. We owe her much thanks for all of the time and effort she puts into our youth organization. Our Cheviot futurity continues to increase each year. With the addition of the yearling ewes this past year and fall ewe lambs the year before, we are able to increase the amount of cheviots that are being raised and retained by our junior members. I want to encourage everyone to continue to support our youth programs. If we want to continue to grow our breed, we need our youth. Shows are a busy time for us all with all the preparation, fitting, etc. It’s very easy to fall into the same routine show after show and I am as guilty as the next. I want to ask that we as breeders make a conscious effort in 2010 to take some time at each show to go visit with one of our youth or new members. Let’s encourage them, help them, and get to know them. Let’s reinforce their choice to raise Cheviots and make an example for the other breeds to follow. 2010 Cheviot Journal

Meet the Director
Dan Dinova
Hello fellow Cheviot enthusiasts. My name is Dan Dinova, and I am proud to serve a term as your director of the Cheviot Association. I have been involved with the sheep industry for 30 years. I started out as an eager FFA member with market lambs. I was the shepherd at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1984. From then on, I have been involved with several sheep operations in one way or another. I became intimately involved with Cheviots, 10 years ago. For those of you who don’t know, I am the truck driver, mechanic and general flunky for J. Susan Traglia Cheviots. I also have 100 commercial ewes, and use them for prescribed grazing. As I am writing this, I am also watching the news, mostly doom and gloom, about the bad economy and so on. As I get ready to go to the barn, I am, however, confident that there is a bright future for Cheviot sheep. We hear all of the time how people take a load of Cheviots to market, and top the sale. We just sent a load of bucks to the ethnic market, and the buyer was ecstatic. He paid well to boot. In saying that the future is bright, I am basing that on several things. We are seeing several enthusiastic new young breeders in the arena. We are one of the few breeds that haven’t gotten so far away from our purpose that market buyers can be ecstatic about the same kind of sheep we show. We have sheep that by design are easy and efficient to raise. Most important of all, we have a group of members who are enthusiastic about the sheep we raise. God put Cheviots on earth to convert solar energy into red meat. You don’t have to be a neo-natal specialist, nor a breeding specialist to raise Cheviots. As we hear other breeders tell horrific stories about getting rams to breed, getting live lambs out their ewes, and then being parenting specialists , we can chuckle and get great satisfaction from the fact that Cheviots are good at both. If there is an oxygen bottle in the lambing barn, it is for the shepherd trying to catch the day old babies. We also spend a lot of time pondering how to market Cheviot sheep. Unfortunately, most of our conversation centers around one sale in Illinois. This sale is a great sale, don’t get me wrong. If we are going to expand our market, we need to do just that. We need to quit worrying about how to sell more sheep to drag around the sawdust, and start finding customers who want to buy a product. That product is lamb and we have some of the best. As this year progresses, I encourage each and everyone of you to go out and find a new customer for lamb. Feed them some and show what a wonderful product we have. People are craving food that they can shake the hand of the farmer . There is no washing, fitting, showing, or travel. The customers are there and waiting to be found. Seek them out. Feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance. Good Luck in 2010!!!!

Meet the Director David Clyde Hello Sheep People! Thank you for electing me as Director at Large for the American Cheviot Sheep Society. This appointment makes for the 2nd generation of Directors in our family. My father Jim Clyde served as Director also. Like him, I look forward to bringing forth new ideas and I am honored to serve as your Director. I have many memories of raising sheep with my sister Gayle Kissick (Clyde) aka “Queenie”, at our family farm in Slippery Rock PA. In fact it was Gayle who convinced us that we needed to have some Cheviots on the farm over 28 years ago. Growing up, I have shown sheep as a Junior in 4-H, several county fairs, and nationally as well. Over the years, we expanded our flock to including bloodlines from prominent Cheviot breeders, and for the past several years have primarily bred from our own stock. Our objective is to produce sheep that are refined while at the same time having substantial volume and functionality. Now a days, I am glad to share rural farm life with my two daughters Paige(age 7) and Cheyenne (age 5), and my wife Melissa at our farm in Greenville PA. However, I haven’t quit my day job yet, which is working as a Carpenter for a local contractor. I would like to see our breed progress into the next generation focusing on the relentless pursuit to improve the breed while preserving its integrity. As long as I can remember sheep have been a part of my life and I don’t expect that to change any time soon. So pull up a chair, crack open a beverage and let’s talk sheep. Sincerely, David Clyde
The 2010 National Cheviot Show will be held in conjunction with the Eastern States Livestock Exposition, Sunday September 19th in West Springfield Massachusetts. More information can be found on their website. 8

Meet the Executive Secretary Jeff Ebert I am excited to be the new executive secretary of the American Cheviot Sheep Society. I look forward to meeting the members throughout the year at Cheviot events. I plan to attend as many activities as my schedule will allow. A brief history of myself. I was born into a sheep family and have owned sheep throughout my entire life. In partnership with my daughters we currently have a flock of around 150 ewes. We have held a production and club lamb sale for 38 years. I also have a small accounting and tax preparation business. My wife, Kerri and I have two daughters Christine and Monica. My daughters have shown at local, state and national shows. I have managed our own sale and the Kansas State sale for several years. Furthermore, I am actively involved in the Kansas Sheep Association and the American Sheep Industry(ASI). I look forward to working with the board of directors to promote Cheviots to new breeders, especially junior members. The Cheviot Futurity is one of the best funded futurity programs of all the breeds. I strongly encourage junior members to consider buying a ewe lamb to show in 2010. I will be attending the Ohio Cheviot Showcase in Eaton, OH, the National Sale in Springfield, IL, the All-American Junior Show in East Lansing, MI, the National Show at the Big E in West Springfield, MA and the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. Please come up and introduce yourself as I want to meet as many of the breeders this year as possible. I encourage veteran breeders to help a junior member. If each older breeder works with and assists one or two younger breeders the Cheviot breed will continue to grow and thrive, for years to come. My personal goal is to help the membership in any way possible and to create enthusiasm and excitement for the Cheviot breed. If I can be of assistance do not hesitate to call or email.

General Information outstanding merits of these choice cuts, the Cheviot has a reputation as a meat producer. These plump, meaty cuts, their pink flesh delicately trimmed with just enough fat to make them juicy and tender, are the housewife’s choice because with them she can serve her family a tasty meal with minimum waste. Because they are housewife’s choice, Cheviots are the choice of the butcher, and therefore bring a better price at the market. Ewes built to due to the high carriage of the head and the quick, deliver larger-headed lambs find the Cheviot-sired coordinated stride. The head is carried high, and lambs, with their small heads, very easy to deliver, so the ears are carried together, erect and forward. that much less attention is required at lambing time. Cheviot 160 to 200 lbs., ewes from 130 to 170 lbs. ram aid these commercial producers in producing the Extreme Hardiness type of lambs desired by the market. The breed is also recommended for its extreme Fine Fleeces hardiness. This is one of the breed’s strongest Cheviots produce generous fleeces of white wool characteristics. The modern Cheviot breed has been produced by selection rather than by crossing. It is a pure breed, one of a very few in this country. All Things Considered
Though Cheviots may come in smaller packages, they contain for the sheepman a surprising combination of highly desirable qualities. They are noted for hardiness, longevity, productiveness, milking, and mothering ability and for their great activity. They are high in quality and hang a presentable carcass that has a minimum of outside fat for the amount of carcass lean produced. They utilize rough, low producing hill country very profitably with relatively little assistance from man and even less from the elements. Where there is a really tough clean-up job to be done to convert waste land into dollars, more and more sheepmen are discovering that “Cheviots can take it.” In comparing Cheviots with other breeds, let Desirable Carcasses the comparison be made on a basis of pounds of The modern Cheviot has a compact body with dressed lamb and clean wool produced per acre, and a straight smooth back with covers a rack of wellconsider all of the costs of this production, including filled, meaty chops and a broad loin of superior the year-round cost of feeding the ewe, and the time quality. They bear their lambs easily, have a high number of twins, and produce plenty of milk to support them. Production records, year after year, show that their twins grow as fast as single lambs. Both the lambs and their mothers are good foragers and thrifty efficient feeders. Their grazing pattern is unlike that of other sheep. Instead of grouping together in a frontal assault on a single area, they tend to spread out over an area and get all the available feed. As rustlers, they have few equals. If there is vegetation to be found—above or beneath the snows—browse, grass, heather, or weed—they will find it.

Cheviot Breed Stand Border Cheviots are a small-framed breed of sheep known for their vigor, mothering ability, muscle and ease of fleshing. Along with their size, the head is another unique characteristic of the Border Cheviot.
I. GENERAL APPEARANCE 25 POINTS
A. APPEARANCE: Alert, active, stylish and symmetrical, standing on moderate leg length. The overall body exhibits balance. B. SIZE: The preferred Cheviot is proportional in height and length with length equal to or exceeding the height of the animal. The average Cheviot ram should weigh approximately 200 pounds at maturity. The average Cheviot ewe should weigh approximately 150 pounds at maturity.
II. BREED TYPE
25 POINTS
The beauty of the Cheviot head is one of the breed’s distinguishing features. The Cheviot style, alertness and contrasting colors set the breed apart from others. A. HEAD: Medium in length and broad, with ample width between the eyes. Straight with little arch between the eyes and nostrils; more strongly arched in rams. 1. EARS: Medium in length, sharply erect, of medium thickness, and placed on top of the head. The circumference of the ears should give a curved appearance, rather than flat and open. From a side view, the ears should be pointed slightly forward. 2. EYES: Large, round, clear and alert, with black pigmentation around the rim of the eye. 3. NOSE: Broad muzzled, with large nostrils forming a black “T” at the end of the nose. 4. MOUTH: Black lipped with a strong, deep jaw. B. HAIR COVERING: Head, ears, and legs well covered with fine, short, white hair. Black spots are acceptable on the ears and poll. Black spots on any other part of the body are objectionable. Brown hair on any part of the body is HIGHLY objectionable. C. HOOVES: Black in color.

III. STRUCTURE
25 POINTS
Soundness is imperative in useful Cheviot sheep. Incorrectness decreases the animal’s movement, growth, reproductive rate, longevity, usefulness and ultimate value. Additionally, structure and soundness are highly inheritable traits. Cheviots should stand on large circumference of bone with adequate size to the foot. Structural soundness relates to the skeleton. Incorrectness in one part of the skeleton usually is connected to incorrectness in other parts of the skeleton. For example, usually post-legged animals are also too straight in their shoulder angle. Areas of Structural Correctness FOREQUARTERS: Shoulder blades should be set in uniformly and smoothly to the rest of the body. BACK: The back of Cheviot sheep should be straight as possible from the top of the shoulder to the dock. A slightly elevated shoulder in comparison to the hip is acceptable. Additionally, slight slope of the hip from the hook bones to the pin bones is acceptable. FRONT FEET: Front View: Both feet should point forward and be perpendicular to the body with straightness from the chest floor to the toe. Side View: Feet should be straight from the chest floor through the knee and to the pastern. The angle of the pastern should be approximately 45 degrees. Less of an angle allows for weak pasterns and more of an angle allows for extreme straightness. REAR FEET: Side View: The back of the rear leg should be perpendicular to the pin bones of the hip. Less angle allows for post-legged individuals. More angle causes sheep to be sickle-hocked. Rear View: Legs should be square and perpendicular to the corners of the body with equal distance between legs at the hock and the toe. MOVEMENT: Animals should maintain the proper correctness to the skeleton both while standing and moving. Many times structural defects are not evident until the animal moves about. It is then important to assess structural correctness both while the Cheviot is standing and moving. For the beginner and veteran breeder alike, an excellent article on feet and leg soundness in sheep is “Feet and Legs” (North Central Regional Extension Publication #301) by Drs. Harold Henneman and Margaret Benson of Michigan State University.

dards of Excellence IV. BODY 25 POINTS
A. NECK: Moderately long, trim, and exhibiting extension, blending smoothly into shoulders, and contributing to an overall balanced appearance. The skin should be free of wrinkles or folds. B. SHOULDERS: Smoothly laid in from neck to back. Tight at top of the shoulder, also smooth at the point of the shoulder. C. CHEST, BRISKET, AND HEART GIRTH: Chest deep and moderately wide, but trim, with adequate capacity, and fitting smoothly into neck and shoulders. Brisket also trim. Heart girth full, broad and deep to promote longevity. D. BACK (TOPLINE): Long and level, no weakness in front or behind the shoulder. E. RIBS: Deep and well sprung with adequate cover. Essential for vigor and ease of fleshing. F. LOIN: Long, wide, deep, and well covered. G. HINDQUARTERS: Hip broader than shoulders. Rump wide, long and level out to the dock. Leg heavily muscled. H. UNDERLINE: Level and as parallel to the topline as possible. Flanks deep and full. I. FLEECE: Chalky white in color, uniform crimp with blunt ends; staple is definite. Covers the body completely from behind the poll and ears to slightly above the knees and hocks, including the belly. Wool Grade: 1/4 to 3/8 blood combing (48s to 58s or 33 to 27 microns) Weight of fleece: Rams, 8 to 14 pounds. Ewes, 6 to 10 pounds. Fleece Characteristics highly objectionable but not disqualifying: A. Black, brown or grey spots in the fleece B. Hairy britch C. Kemp through the fleece D. Shiny fleece J. TESTICLES (RAMS): Uniform and adequate size for age, and well descended from body. Free from any abnormalities. Scrotum free from any split. K. TEATS (EWES): Two well placed teats of moderate length, free from any abnormalities.

Implementing New Breed Standards
The new Cheviot Standards of Excellence were adopted at the 2004 annual meeting of the American Cheviot Sheep Society. The new Breed Standards are the result of more than two years of work by a committee formed in 2002. Through the process of updating the Cheviot Breed Standards, members presented many thoughts and proposals. These thoughts were debated until the final draft was approved by a vote of the members in November 2004. While probably not perfect, these Standards represent a significant step forward in the preservation of both the desirable carcass and the beautiful and distinctive Cheviot appearance. Now the important task of applying these Standards is up to all Cheviot breeders. Taking time to explain and demonstrate the preferred Cheviot characteristics to young 4-Hers and others who desire to be Cheviot breeders is critical. Another important task in assuring that these Standards are followed is to choose judges for national Cheviot competitions who will apply them in the show ring. To help the Board of Directors evaluate how an individual judge applies the breed Standards of Excellence, we ask you to fill out the critique form found on the back page of the Cheviot Journal. If you need extra copies of the critique form, please contact the ACSS office. It is very important for each member to do this so we can establish a judge’s review to assist in the selection of judges for national shows who follow the Breed Standards. The American Cheviot Sheep Society has taken a large step forward in guarding and maintaining the quality of our Cheviot breed. It is now up to each one of us to complete this task. Please fill out a judge critique form for each show you attend and follow the instructions for submitting the form. If you would like extra copies of the Cheviot Breed Standards of Excellence to share with judges in your area, please contact the ACSS office

2010 National Cheviot Queen Hannah Wolters
I was born on April Fool`s Day in Texas seventeen years ago. I currently live in Culleoka, Tennessee with my parents Tim and Dee, and my siblings: Bethany, Rachael and Aaron. We have lived in five different states, all across the country; from Georgia to Idaho. During my time in Idaho I became involved in 4-H. My family and I were not the farming type until we moved to our Idaho homestead. This was my first taste of farming and raising livestock and I loved it. My first 4-H project was the market lamb project; designed to last only sixty days. Mine did not go according to plan; before long I had a flock of forty Suffolk sheep. Over the four years that I lived in Idaho I branched out in 4-H, pursuing other interests such as sewing, quilting and public speaking. In 2004, we moved from the rolling wheat fields of Idaho to Tennessee. Shortly after getting settled I was back in 4-H and in the mud with some new sheep. By chance I chose Cheviots. I have struggled with learning to raise, fit, and show Cheviots. At some of the fairs I show at I have encountered judges that do not know what a Cheviot sheep is. I currently own eight registered Cheviot ewes, and am looking forward to lambing season. Through raising Cheviots I have learned the value of patience, from halter-breaking to fitting patience is essential when working with a Cheviot. I have been very involved in Tennessee 4-H, I have chosen to hold leadership positions including President in the county club, launch national service learning projects, compete in state public speaking and much more. For the past two years I have served on the American Sheep Producers Youth Task Force, I am responsible for assisting in the planning for youth events at the national convention. I am recent graduate of the Tennessee Governors School for Agriculture Sciences. I was in the Vet and the Alternative Agriculture classes during the month long school. I am planning on attending the University of Tennessee at Martin for my Bachelor of Sciences degree, majoring in Agriculture. After completing college I hope to pursue a career in missions with a focus in Agriculture and farming. 20

Meet the Junior President Ashley Stevens
I am pleased to be serving again as the National Junior Cheviot Association President for the upcoming year. I am very excited to be working with all the new and old faces in our junior association. I can not wait to get many of our activities we have been planning up and running, and also continuing with our old activities that have worked well for the juniors in the past. This will be our second year with the starter flock program, and we are hoping to get some new faces involved with our breed. These applications became available at the 2009 NAILE show in Louisville. We are now on a mission to get these forms out and publicized to any junior member who would like to start with the Cheviot breed. Our main fundraiser still continues to be our 50/50 drawing in Louisville. At this years meeting we discussed many options for continued fundraisers. We also talked about several options in which to sponsor junior show awards, and also ways to have new and existing member socials at some shows. I am a sophomore at Frederick Community College and live in Frederick, Maryland. This was my fourth year with Cheviots, and with each passing year my passion for this unique breed keeps growing stronger. I am a past National Cheviot Queen, serving in 2007. I look forward to another great year with the Junior Association, and can not wait to get more members involved with our activities. Holliday and I want to welcome any new faces. Dues are $5.00, and can be sent to Holliday. Information is also on the cheviot website. I am very excited about another year with the Junior Association and hope to see many new and old faces in the next year. Ashley Stevens

Cheviot Ewe Futurity The American Cheviot Sheep Society is sponsoring a Cheviot Ewe Lamb Futurity open to all Junior Exhibitors. A “Junior Exhibitor” is defined as an exhibitor who is not older than 21 on the date of the Junior Cheviot Show at NAILE. There is no lower age limit, but the junior must be physically capable of showing their own sheep (exception made for physical or other handicap). Each junior may purchase more than one lamb, but only one lamb placing in the Top Eight will be awarded premiums. The American Cheviot Sheep Society guarantees the availability of $800 to be awarded to the top placings. Consignors will nominate lambs at specified sales and only these lambs will be eligible for the Futurity. All lambs must be purchased at a designated sale. No lambs purchased through private sales are eligible.

The card must be signed by the Superintendent of the show certifying that the junior exhibited the lamb, class size and the placing of the lamb. 10. For points-earned purposes, all shows are considered equal; i.e. AOB, Junior, Open, State, County receive equal point value in figuring points. Only the Junior Show at NAILE will be included, excluding the NAILE Open Show. 11. Futurity lambs may compete at any number of shows, but only the top five point-award shows will be included in determining awards. 12. Futurity Awards will be announced at the American Cheviot Sheep Society Annual Meeting at NAILE. 13. The sliding scale shown in the chart indicates how points will be determined. 14. The Cheviot Futurity Program will expand in 2010 to include a Yearling Ewe Futurity Comeback Program. Junior participants in the 2009 Futurity may nominate their ewe by June 1, 2010 for this competition. Spring and fall lambs will be eligible for the comeback program. 2010 Cheviot Journal

Starter Flock Award American Jr. Cheviot Breeders Association Purpose and Contest Rules for 2009-2010 The American Jr. Cheviot Breeders Association is starting this contest to award a starter flock to an American youth up to 17 years of age as of the first of the current year. The purpose is to introduce the youth to the joys of raising and owning a purebred Cheviot sheep as well as encouraging the growth of new Cheviot breeders across the country. The winner of the first starter flock will be selected at the Springfield meeting of the American Jr. Cheviot Breeders Association and will receive their starter flock to be shown throughout the 2010 season.
The selected young person will be awarded the starter flock as follows:
•
1st Year – One Bred Ewe (not over four years when bred)
Contest Rules: 1) The applicant must not be over 17 as of January 1st, 2010 and must have never owned a Cheviot breeding sheep, nor can their parents/guardian be raising Cheviots.
2) The sheep are to be maintained in a healthy condition and housed in clean facilities. It is fur ther understood that the sheep will receive necessary vaccinations, worming and medications that are essential to good health.
3) The sheep are to receive proper nutrition (pasture, hay, water and grain) to assure health and proper growth that has been bred into the animal. 4) The applicant must be familiar with the costs involved in raising sheep and must agree to supply the necessary finances as needed. 5) Starter flock ewes must always be bred to a registered Cheviot ram.
6) The winner of the flock is expected to give a report to the association at the Springfield meeting of the American Jr. Cheviot Breeders Association as well as inform the advisor of the Jr. Association of how they did at any fairs or national shows entered. 7) The winner is expected to show their animals at their county fair.
8) Failure to maintain the sheep in good health, properly fed and in clean facilities will automatically result in the starter flock sheep being returned to the American Jr. Cheviot Breeders Association. In the event the sheep are returned, the American Jr. Cheviot Breeders Association assumes no responsibility as to the costs incurred by the winner. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ted and Charlotte Coil for leasing me "Dodd 673" Reserve Champion and HighSelling Ram at the 2007 National Cavoit Sale. I have used him almost exclusively on my entire ewe flock and hope to have some offspring at the 2010 National Sale. mclyde95@verizon.net
Also, due to the loss of some pasture ground next summer and other changes in my personal life, I have to decided to sell the majority of my brood ewes. At this time, I plan on waiting until the lambs are weaned, after which all ewes would be available for purchase. Call early for details and best selection. Judges Critique Form It is important to the Cheviot breed that the new Cheviot Standards of Excellence be applied and followed in the show ring. Many Junior breeders and others establishing a new flock make purchase decisions based upon show results. Please make copies of this form and use it to evaluate Cheviot competitions you have participated in or watched. Return to Cheviot Office within two weeks of the competition. Your feedback will help the Board choose judges for National Cheviot competitions in the future.
