Abacus is founded by a consortium of Asia’s leading airlines including Garuda Indonesia, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, China Airlines, EVA Airways, Royal Brunei Airlines, Phillipines Airlines, SilkAir, Dragonair, and All Nippon Airways. The US-based Sabre Inc., also has a 35% shareholding in Abacus since 1996. In addition to flight reservation services, Abacus also provides services for hotel bookings, car rental, and railway ticket reservation, as well as travel insurance policies. Abacus also provides solutions for online booking (internet Booking Engine - IBE), corporate booking tools, bak office and airline hosting systems. In the last three years, the aviation industry in Asia-Pacific showed fairly rapid development.
Dear shareholders and customers, Abacus is a Global Distribution Systems (GDS) operator providing travel solutions and services for travel agents and airlines. More than 15,000 travel agents and 35,000 workstations allover Asia are connected in our network, making us the market leader in the GDS industry in Asia.
Most airlines in the region have recorded 30 years of continuous growth, at a relatively higher rate compared to other regions in the world. As a market leader in the GDS industry in Indonesia, our operations in the country also experienced a significant increase. Consequently, Abacus must continue to innovate in order to improve our services and maintain the trust. Testifying to our industry and market leadership in the Asia-Pacific region, Abacus has accumulated a number of prestigious awards since its establishment in 1988. More recently, in 2008, Abacus received the Best eCommerce and Best Marketing Team awards from TravelWeekly Industry Award, and also the recognition as Best GDS for ten consecutive years at the TTG Travel Awards 2008.

In 2009, Abacus won an award in Best New Technology category in the Travel Weekly China Industry Awards, and in the same year, Abacus was included in the TTG Hall of Fame. In response to technological advances in ticket reservation systems that continue to drive changes in the travel agent business, Abacus has developed an Internet Booking Engine as a solution to today’s technologically driven environment. The online Internet Booking Engine system functions as a ‘mini market’ for travel agents. This allows prospective travelers to compare ticket prices at different airlines and to book their tickets without leaving home, simply by accessing the website of the respective travel agents using an Internet connection. This feature is a fine example of how Abacus continues to strive for innovations that are designed to help business partners to grow and get ahead amidst developments in the constantly changing business environment.

Following the approvals by the Minister of Telecommunications and the Minister of Finance on 29 December 1993 and 31 December 1993, respectively, regarding the joint venture with Abacus International, Garuda Indonesia established a Mega CRS Team under the chairmanship of Mr. Sunarjo, who was assisted by a secretary and six staff members. After the various systems for network, finance, and marketing as well as the legal aspects were firmly established, Abacus Indonesia began as a pilot project, initially collaborating with five major domestic travel agencies, namely Vaya Tour, Dwidaya, Anta Tour, Smailing Tour and Wita Tour. The project proved to be a success, and soon other travel agencies joined the network. On 1 March 1995, PT Abacus Distribution Systems Indonesia was officially incorporated, with offices at Kyoei Prince Building, 20th floor, Jl. Jend. Sudirman Kav. 3-4, Jakarta 10220. PT Abacus Distribution Systems Indonesia thus has the distinction of being the first Mega-CRS to legally operate in Indonesia. In line with the rapid growth in business volume, and especially those originating in East Java area, Abacus Indonesia decided to establish a branch office in Surabaya in 1997 to cater to the market in that city and its surroundings. Next, another branch office was established in Medan in 2001 to serve the market in Medan and other regions in Sumatera. As a National Marketing Company, Abacus Indonesia serves to strengthen the position of Abacus International in the Asia Pacific, through the provision of training, technical assistance, help desk services, and marketing services to serve Abacus clients, including information on the use of Abacus systems. Currently, ownership of Abacus Indonesia is held by Garuda Indonesia, with 95% shareholding, and Abacus International Pte Ltd. (AIPL) with 5% shareholding. The company maintains four offices in Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya and Denpasar, with the Jakarta office located at Jl. Mampang Prapatan Raya no.93, Jakarta Selatan.
