Spielbank Berlin – Germany's most modern casino opened on Potsdamer Platz
On April 28th, the Spielbank Berlin opened its main venue at Potsdamer Platz after twelve months of core renovation with a festive gala and international guests. The NOVOMATIC Interior Design Solutions team was in charge of the design, planning and implementation of the conversion. More than 70 trades were involved in this refurbishing marathon, most of them companies from the Berlin-Brandenburg region. In Germany's most modern casino, guests can try their luck at Roulette, Black Jack and Poker at 40 live gaming tables and on 500 slots of the latest generation across six floors with a total area of 8,500 sqm.
Sustainable and green core renovation
Sustainability was the top priority during the renovation and expansion. All lighting was converted to LED, contributing to substantial energy savings. A completely new cooling ceiling covering 2,100 sqm with CFC-free coolants provides climate-neutral air conditioning. The media technology also sets new standards with 18 LED walls with a total area of 160 sqm and 103 displays featuring 75 or 65 inch diagonals. The displays show art installations of the famous 3D artist Marc Pantenburg.
Gerhard Wilhelm, Management Spokesperson at Spielbank Berlin: “Sustainability and ESG criteria were the guiding principles for all our renovation measures. Green electricity and renewable raw materials as well as certified and sustainable wood were used. In this respect, we are not only Germany’s most modern, but also the country’s greenest casino.”

The NOVOMATIC Interior Design Solutions (IDS) team was responsible for design, planning, production, installation and project management. In order to be able to accompany the renovation in the best possible way, IDS Project Manager Raffaela Brenninger even moved to Berlin for more than a year. 18 semitrailer trucks delivered the building

materials, 180 kilometres of cables were laid and six levels were made completely barrier-free with six escalators and two lifts. 180,000 man-hours were required to complete the core renovation. In addition, 4,400 sqm of carpet were laid and the large crystal chandelier with a diameter of four metres, which extends over a length of 14 metres, weighs 1.2 tonnes alone. In total 72 tonnes of statically relevant metal structures were installed.
Gerhard Wilhelm: “This masterstroke was achieved while the casino was in full operation. This was only possible thanks to precise construction logistics and constructive cooperation with the building administration in the Berlin Mitte district, for which I would like to express my gratitude.”

The history of Spielbank Berlin GmbH & Co. KG begins with its foundation in 1975, when a casino was established in West Berlin: Gaming operations began at the Europa Center.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Spielbank Berlin had the opportunity to modernise and expand. In 1998, it moved into its current premises at Potsdamer Platz. Since then, Spielbank Berlin has been operating four locations across the city: the main house at Potsdamer Platz as well as the casinos at the TV Tower, at the Ellipse Spandau and at Kurfürstendamm. More than 700,000 guests visit the Spielbank Berlin every year.
With more than 500 employees, Spielbank Berlin is one of the largest employers in its sector and an important economic factor in the region.
Attractive festive programme for Berliners
The reopening was celebrated over the course of three days with free admission to the casino: Friday, 28 April from 3 p.m. until Sunday, 30 April 2023. It was accompanied by an entertainment programme with numerous show acts, a large food court and special prize draws. As a special highlight, guests could win a car on each of the three days. Furthermore, a well-filled safe could be cracked once. During the three-day opening festival, numerous artists performed walking acts, for example a Charlie Chaplin impersonator, a musical duo, pantomimes and break-dancers, acrobats as well as glowing stilt walkers. Finally, the big casino show determined the casino champion.
