Welcome

From the Chamber of Commerce: Welcome to Allen Park! Allen Park offers a great place to live and work with many nationally known companies calling our city home. Many small business owners have given us the honor of having their businesses here as well. Our city also has many opprtunities to get involved in the community such as various service clubs, downtown development and city commissions. Allen Park residents take pride in their homes and the community, which is evident by the wellmaintained homes, solid neighborhoods and excellent schools. The Allen Park Chamber of Commerce is a volunteer business organization dedicated to fostering economic growth and community partnerships and advocates for its members in the business community. The chamber provides a point of contact for new and existing businesses and works together to strengthen the growth of the business community. I hope that you will enjoy reviewing this biannual directory and keep it handy as a

reference tool. The Chamber produces this directory with the support of its members. Your Chamber is proud to be a voice in the community and we strongly believe that a city is only as healthy as its business climate.

Sincerely, Sandae Cooke President, Allen Park Chamber of Commerce

Housing & Quality of Life

The Allen Park housing market is regarded as the “Gem” of the downriver communities. Located between three major freeways, Allen Park residents have the ability to access what were once thought to be distant areas. The mobility enlarges the job market for the many whom, having grown up in the city, prefer to stay and raise their own families in the city. Well-kept brick homes on treelined streets that were constructed during the 1940’s and 50’s dominate most neighborhoods. Allen Park is one of the few downriver communities where additions to are the norm and not the exception. The school system, having recently undergone a face-lift with the additions to its buildings, is considered one of the best in the area. The city boasts 12,333 housing units and is about to increase that number with the addition of more singlefamily residential units on the former Lapham school property. The 4.76-acre parcel will constitute the last major housing development

in the city and add additional tax revenue. City services are provided by tax revenues and include police and fire protection, street lighting, snow removal, street sweeping, salting of roads, street maintenance, sewers, trash curb side pick-up and parks and recreational activities. The new recreation center is now “Open for Business” and combines senior activities with the ice arena and other city-run recreational opportunities.

Downtown Development Authority The Allen Park Downtown Development Authority (DDA) proudly presents a new marketing and branding concept for the business district. The new marketing concept is called the “Bridal Mile” and was developed by the DDA marketing and promotions committee to create a brand image for downtown Allen Park. The purpose of the “Bridal Mile” is to promote downtown Allen Park as a retail destination for future brides, bridal parties, and any wedding related customers. Additionally, the DDA developed a Bridal Mile Brochure that lists wedding businesses by category along with a navigational map. For example, there is a category for Bridal Shops, Bakeries, Banquet Halls, Florists, Beauty Salons, Photographers, Printers, Travel Agents, Restaurants, Entertainment and a unique category for Special Touches. More than 68 wedding related businesses have been identified in Allen Park. Additionally, the DDA designed a window logo to help drivers and pedestrians identify participating wedding businesses. Bridal Mile brochures are available at the DDA Office and all Bridal Mile businesses. The unique appeal of the Bridal Mile concept makes downtown Allen Park a one-stop destination for virtually all your wedding and bridal related needs! In 2008, the DDA completed a major downtown capital improvement project. The “Allen Road Improvement Project” included several components. The centerpiece of the project was a new downtown pocket park at the corner of White and Allen Roads. The park features a 12-foot clock tower surrounded by brick pavers, patterned concrete, new landscaping beds, new seating areas and game tables. Additionally, new street light fixtures were installed along Allen Road to match the Park Avenue district. The project also featured removal of dangerous electrical poles in the alleyway downtown and construction of a new safer vehicular alleyway adjacent to

middle Allen Road businesses. Importantly, the project included safer and wider sidewalks along with convenient new parking spaces directly adjacent to many businesses. Downtown Allen Road was redesigned to create a more pedestrian friendly environment and new angle parking spaces were added for convenience. To date, this project has encouraged approximately $5.1 million dollars of private investment for downtown Allen Park. This investment includes the new Ruby Tuesday and Broadcast Booth restaurants, as well as National City Bank, Metropolitan Furniture and Top Shelf Liquor. Fortunately, there was no tax increase or millage increase involved. The entire project was funded with DDA tax increment revenues and bonds. Over $4.5 million was spent on this project without raising taxes. The DDA believes the project was a strong positive step for the economic development of downtown Allen Park. Since its inception in 1991, the DDA has completed major streetscape projects and parking lot projects along Park Avenue and Allen Road. The DDA was created to increase property values, halt property value deterioration and promote economic growth downtown. Additionally, the DDA offers commercial development incentives like the Façade Grant Program to assist local business owners. The DDA also sponsors the downtown Classic Car Show in June each year. For more information about the Allen Park DDA, please contact the Executive Director, C. James Sabo at (313) 928-0940.

One project is Fairlane Green, between Oakwood Boulevard and Outer Drive and I-94 and the Southfield Freeway. It will add more than a million square feet of retail and recreation space and include natural green space with a park and walking trails. The other is Independence Marketplace, a 38-acre shopping center near the Southfield Freeway and Outer Drive. Small business owners ranging from doctors, lawyers, specialty shops and restaurants make up the heart of the business community. Ford Motor Company, Belle Tire and APAC Paper & Packaging are just a few of the nationally recognized companies that have seen the tremendous value and opportunities our city provides.

Allen Park also boasts three industrial parks to include: • The Fairlane Business Park • Danou Tec Park • Allen Park Industrial Center As you can see, small and large businesses alike find Allen Park to be a community where they can prosper. We look forward to welcoming your business!

Health & Safety

Allen Park has a network to provide excellent medical care in both the private and public sectors. The Senior Program offers many services such as blood pressure monitoring and medical literature that is updated on a regular basis. The community center provides state of the art exercise equipment and an indoor track for regular walks, even on the coldest winter days. Two major hospitals are readily accessible, Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center (OHMC) and Henry Ford Hospital Wyandotte (HFHW); both offer state of the art medical

services. OHMC has been recognized as one of the nations top 100 cardiovascular services. HFWH has had a $5.8M expansion of its Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department and Operating Facilities. Allen Park also offers a wide spectrum of General Practitioners, Internal Medicine, Dentists and Chiropractors, which compliment the hospital care. The city has a fire department that offers excellent fire protection and has 28 trained and licensed firemen/ paramedics that perform Advance Cardiac Life Support rescue. Our response times average less than four minutes for most medical emergencies. Our paramedics essentially bring the emergency room to you. Transportation is available to three area hospitals within minutes and trauma centers are available and accessible as well. The city has a commercial and residential Knox Box Program for emergency rapid entry to buildings. Through grant funding, the Residential Knox Box Program was established in May of 2006 providing loaner Knox Boxes to residents with medical/physical disabilities. The Fire Department as well as the Senior Program provides “File of Life” packets to our residents free of charge through a donation from the Festivities Committee. These packets allow for recording of surgeries, allergies, medical conditions and medications to be provided to our personnel for quick medical assessments during emergencies. The Allen Park Police Department consists of 46 sworn officers and is lead by Chief of Police Dean Tamsen. The department is community-oriented and each officer’s dedication to his or her oath is at the highest commitment. For 50 years the Allen Park Police has provided our community with a growing array of services. Currently, the Allen Park Police Department provides two S.W.A.T. officers and two Crisis Negotiators to assist during critical incidents. The K-9 Unit is always ready to locate narcotics, track suspects and find victims. The Motorcycle Unit, Weighmaster Unit, Alcohol, and Laser Enforcement Teams work hard to

maintain safety on our roadways. In 2006, MDOT reported the Annual Average Daily Traffic Volume in the Southfield corridor was quite substantial with the highest culmination being 98,300 vehicles. Therefore, the Allen Park Police Department participates in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign to save lives. Keep your eyes open for seat belt enforcement zones and please make sure your loved ones are securely fastened in a moving vehicle. The Allen Park Police Department’s mission is to provide professional, progressive policing services to its citizens through cooperative partnerships, diverse programs and sensitivity to the changing needs of our community. Citizens and visitors of Allen Park enjoy a friendly, safe atmosphere due in large part to the devotion of the Allen Park Police Department to its mission and duties. Please visit their website at www.allenparkpolice. org for more information on the department, services and upcoming events.

Veterans Memorial Park Memorial Symbolism

• The circle represents the circle of life.

• The silhouette of the granite monument and flanking shrubbery represents the Veterans Administration Hospital that formerly stood on the site.

• The waving strips of the plaza paving stand for the nation’s freedoms defended by veterans.

• The six steps that elevate the monument were salvaged from the hospital entrance and recall the men and women who used them during the hospital’s 60 years of operation. • The granite materials represent the strength of commitment to veterans. • Plants represent the life nurtured through the hospital. • The star points to the five branches of the military.
