SALINE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ABOUT THE COVER People in the Saline community are proud of their ability to combine preservation of a rich history with all patterns of current and future growth. Contrasting photos show how this is happening. Newer buildings share the stage with older ones by using unique concepts that maintain the functionality and attractiveness of both. Examples include the First Methodist Church of Saline that celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2008. After moving to a larger building in the 1990s, the old church building downtown was remodeled to become “The Calico Cat” retail store, and then most recently “Beanstalks” storybook-themed play cafe. Other examples are readily apparent in and around downtown Saline.

Welcome to Saline On behalf of the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce, thank you for your interest in us and welcome! As you might see from looking at a map, the Saline area community is strategically positioned in central Washtenaw County to provide a truly great place to live and do business. The Chamber’s market area includes the City of Saline and the surrounding townships of Bridgewater, Lodi, Pittsfield, Saline, and York. The living experience and the Saline “brand” is characterized by a desirable demographic mix and a community committed to volunteerism. We’re known for having a “small town” flair but with many of the advantages sometimes only available in larger metropolitan areas. Last year Saline was once again honored to be on the “Top 100” list of all places in the country to live by CNN/Money Magazine. The list represents extensive research and examines things like financial performance, housing, education, quality of life, leisure and culture, and health facilities. It was the second time on the list for us and we were the only Michigan city to repeat over the last three years!

So, how are we doing it? There’s plenty to tell people about in the way of “bragging rights”! It includes things like: (1) St. Joseph Mercy Saline Hospital being named in their own right as one of the country’s “Top 100,” or (2) Saline Area Schools students results on the MEAP tests (Michigan Educational Assessment Program) that placed them head-and-shoulders above other area public school districts, or (3) our top-rated and newly-expanded District Library, or (4) the growth in our Industrial Parks areas that includes many companies with international backgrounds, or (5) the record number of events and community activities held in our area led by premier events like the Celtic Festival, Craft Shows, Community Fair, and the Annual Holiday Parade, or (6) the important and ongoing work done by our Historical Societies in preserving a valued past, or (7) the intra-regional cooperation that happens all year long at the Saline Sustainability Circle that includes the City of Saline, area townships, the school system, and the Chamber, or (8) even the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce itself that last year grew to over 500 members for the first time in its history. As you look through this publication you’ll see more of our community’s historic past, achieving present, and promising future. Our Directory is the most widelycirculated informational piece about our community. Copies are distributed to every Welcome Center in Michigan and are picked up fast at places like the Post Office and City or Township Halls. Community Saline Sustainability Circle Beginning with a community-wide visioning session and with the helping hand of the Washtenaw County Department of Planning and Environment, the Saline Sustainability Circle began its mission in October of 2001. After much public discussion and input, formal Guidelines were adopted in April of 2004. The group meets monthly and is made up of representatives from the City of Saline, the Townships of Lodi, Pittsfield, Saline, and York, the Saline Area Schools, and the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce (ex-officio). Meetings are open to the public. Their overall objective is to serve as a resource to local community leaders in our region to achieve a better environment in which to live, work, and recreate. Discussions on future growth and development are an important part of this process. The Sustainability Circle has identified “Regional Goals and Strategies” in the areas of transportation, growth management, natural resources protection, and quality of life issues. The Sustainability Circle now serves as an effective forum for communicating developmental issues and sharing common jurisdictional concerns. Government and community leaders are to be congratulated for the process and willingness that has brought about the Sustainability Circle. Their efforts have helped find a meaningful balance between inevitable future growth and the handling of problems created by growth, and ways to preserve an enviable quality of life in the greater Saline area.

Downtown

Since last year, Downtown Saline has had much to celebrate and also a few challenges. On the plus side, the renovation of the new “Merchant Square” building has been completed including signage, paint, and all new façades. The Village Marketplace & Lofts have razed the former Steeb Dodge Chrysler buildings and Clark gas station in preparation for the start of construction. The Downtown Merchants Association is becoming more and more active in hosting and publicizing downtown events and activities. Their eﬀorts combined with Chamber of Commerce have improved the attendance at all of the major downtown events.

DOWNTOWN MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION

On the challenge side we continue to look for unique businesses to ﬁll a few of our empty store fronts and to enhance the growth for our shopping public. Planned projects for the downtown are still a “work in progress” and are taking longer than expected. Some downtown businesses have been lost during the year, but we have also seen a few replacements step in and open their doors. Example, Emmett’s closed and a new business will open. The Wayﬁnding project for new signage in and around the City required numerous approvals from various state agencies and it is still moving forward, just at a slower pace than originally planned. In addition we are working in conjunction with the Downtown Merchants Association and the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce on a new downtown project, “Keep Saline Glowing”. This project will replace the attractive downtown tree lighting with newer LED lights. While LED’s are more expensive, they will last longer, are brighter, and are less costly to operate.

Events sponsored by the Downtown Merchants Association include Ladies Night Out in February, Sportscars to Saline in June, Summer Music Series beginning in June and continuing into August, and Harvest of the Arts in September. The DMA also participates in Saline Summerfest and the annual Holiday Parade.

The Downtown Merchants Association was organized in 2005 and meets twice monthly. The purpose of the DMA is to create a mechanism for businesses to work together to create an environment where people can come to shop and enjoy downtown Saline.

Finally, Saline was recognized by CNN Money Magazine during 2007 as one of the 100 best cities in the United States. This is the second time in three years we were recognized with this honor, coming out at 59th. To recognize this tribute, there are light pole banners at the entrance to the City proclaiming this distinction. The People-To-People initiative, created in 1956 by President Eisenhower, led to the formation of the Sister Cities International organization. American cities partner with communities around the world to promote friendships between people and form strong aﬃliations that support the exchange of ideas and goodwill. Saline has active relationships with the cities of Brecon, Wales and Lindenberg, Germany. Visiting another country and staying in the host’s home provides a unique cultural experience and has engendered many long lasting friendships between these communities. Saline has one of the oldest active partnerships in the history of the program with Brecon. Established in 1966, this partnership has generated many friendships and visits across the ocean. Brecon is a town established over 915 years ago, nestled in the

Brecon Beacons, a scenic national park. The Saline Celtic Festival began as a celebration of the 30th anniversary of our twinning. The partnership with Lindenberg began in 2001 and was formally established with a visit to Saline by 38 Germans in 2003. Lindenberg is a beautiful city close to the southern border of Germany. Our sister Liebherr plant is also located in this city. The Saline Oktoberfest and Christkindlmarket are fun events promoting German culture. Both organizations are citizen driven and are always looking for new members to participate by hosting a family or helping at an event. Saline’s own Meredith Bixby, one of America’s foremost puppeteers, is celebrated in these displays. For generations, school children throughout the country sat in rapt attention when the puppeteers made their annual visit. Dioramas of Bixby’s marionettes and stage settings, photographs, and artwork highlight his 50 years as a national performer.

DEPOT MUSEUM

Ann Arbor Street Open Saturdays, 11am-3pm (mid May thru September except holiday weekends) Admission Free The Saline Railroad Depot was built with a late Victorian architectural style in 1870 and was used until 1962. On July 4, 1995, the depot was dedicated as a museum and accepted to the National Historic Register. An old pot-bellied stove still reigns in the station agent’s oﬃce, where visitors can view pictures of all the depots along the spur line between Ypsilanti and Hillsdale County, where switching tracks took the train on to Chicago. The exhibit also includes the freight room, a fully furnished 1906 caboose, and an 1830’s livery barn. 16

RENTSCHLER FARM MUSEUM

1265 E. Michigan Avenue Open Saturdays, 11am-3pm (mid May thru September except holiday weekends) Admission Free Four generations of Rentschlers lived and worked on this farm from 1904 until 1998 when the City of Saline purchased the early 20th century farmhouse with Queen Anne-style porch, several outbuildings, and four acres for the purpose of a museum. Volunteers from the Saline Area Historical Society have developed the farm with a focus on the changing farm life from 1900 to 1950. This time of great change in agriculture and family living, with transitions from horse to tractor, kerosene to electricity, and an agriculture-based economy to a manufacturing economy, are all visible in the history of this family farm.

DEPOT TRAIL

Between 402 N. Ann Arbor Street and Harris Street The Depot Trail is 1/4-mile long and runs between North Ann Arbor and Harris streets. The trail was installed in 2006 by clearing brush and trees from an abandoned RR with a lot of hard work from a number of citizens. The funds which paid for that portion of the work that could not be completed by volunteers came from the Washtenaw Steps Up grant via the community group, “Pick Up the Pace, Saline” (PUPS). The trail is made of crushed, compacted limestone to provide a walkable, bikeable surface. Further enhancements were made to the trail in 2007 including public art, plantings, a bench, and bike rack from the same funding source.

WEBERBL AESS SCHOOL 520 E. Woodland Drive

This quaint one-room schoolhouse from the 1860’s was donated to the Saline Area Schools by the Milton Weidmayer family. In 2002 it was moved to its current site, beginning the historical preservation. The schoolhouse has been made into an interactive museum with many historical artifacts, including desks and furnishings. Teachers from Saline Area Schools have developed individualized curriculum for Weber-Blaess enabling students to experience diﬀerent eras and a rich, varied sampling of the early days of education in a one-room schoolhouse.

Woodland Drive Between Woodland Meadows Elementary and Weber-Blaess School The Saline Community Garden is an organization dedicated to community building and healthy living. It provides a gathering place for friends coming together to grow fruits and vegetables, promoting healthy eating and exercise while celebrating our great historic community, local arts, and culture. This project is funded through the “Pick Up The Pace, Saline” (PUPS) community coalition which receives Washtenaw Steps Up funding through Washtenaw County Public Health and the Michigan Department of Community Health. The Grand Opening and Dedication was held May 20, 2007.

TWO TWELVE ARTS CENTER

SUTHERL AND WILSON FARMSTEAD

The Two Twelve Arts Center is a non-proﬁt organization funded by the Cowan Slavin Foundation. The mission of the Center is to provide a creative hub oﬀering visual and performing artists the opportunity and working space to come together to work, create and teach. The Center contributes to the cultural life of the residents of Saline and its environs by supporting a full schedule of classes, programs, performances, and exhibits.

The Sutherland Wilson Farmstead is being preserved as a historic site. Purchased by Langford Sutherland in 1832, the farm remained in family hands for 170 years. The Greek Revival home and carriage house/stable are pictured. Other original outbuildings include the pump house, wood shed, ice house, hog house, and barn. This sesquicentennial farmstead is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and the restored barn recently received the “Barn of the Year” award. Education SALINE DISTRICT LIBRARY The Saline District Library is situated on eleven acres of wooded nature trails. It serves the 25,000 residents of the Saline Area School District with a collection of over 90,360 items, and has specialized programs for all interests and all ages.

WASHTENAW CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Washtenaw Christian Academy is a private, interdenominational school with classes from pre Kindergarten through 12th grade. The Academy is dedicated to providing a quality education in a uniquely Christian atmosphere.

The library expansion, completed in May, doubled the space to 33,000 sq. ft. and includes study rooms, a local history room which includes display cases for some of the Meredith Bixby Marionettes, a teen room, and expanded space for more books, DVDs, and other collections. The youth department is twice the size, with a larger program room and more computers. A new feature is the drive-up drop box on the north side of the building and the hours have also been expanded. In the libraryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 14-year history, the pattern of usage is one of growth. The number of materials checked out has grown an average of 8% per year, with 7% more people entering the front doors. More people are taking advantage of reference service which helps people ďŹ nd answers to questions and navigate the internet. Web usage of the online catalog has soared to 44% higher than last year.

Recreation Saline has 11 parks located in the city, occupying 190.54 acres of land. Tefft Park features a fitness trail, lighted tennis courts, lighted softball fields, soccer field, two play structures, 5-hole disc golf course, and picnic areas. Wilderness Park’s tranquility invites nature lovers seeking a quiet walk in the woods, while Millpond Park is a hub of activities with a modern play structure, soccer fields, dog park, and is the host for the annual Celtic Festival. Curtiss Park features a paved trail and observation deck, and play equipment. Pavilions are available to rent for any occasion at Curtiss and Millpond. Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds Throughout the year over 300,000 people are drawn to over 200 events and activities at the sprawling Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Lodi Township. Attractions like the Saline Community Fair, Antique Shows, 4-H Exhibits, tractor pulls, and the PRCA Rodeo bring big crowds to the Saline area community and have been doing so for over 50 years. Coordinating activities is a challenging job and at the top of it all is Stan Poet and a dedicated Washtenaw Farm Council Board of Directors. According to Stan, “I deal with a lot of really neat people all year long and they’re the reason I look so good.” Stan and his capable grounds staﬀ can be found on site at all hours of the day, busily making preparations for the next big event!
