Universitas makes technological breakthrough Robotics revolution

The first multipurpose surgical robotic system in Southern Africa is now used at the Universitas Academic Hospital, giving surgeons the upper hand in the operating theatre.

The introduction of the Versius Surgical Robotics System is a groundbreaking moment for healthcare in South Africa.

This places Universitas at the forefront of medical innovation in Africa.

At the launch on Tuesday, 11 March, at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Free State (UFS), premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae said the use of the system will not only elevate the healthcare system in general but also positions the country as a key player in the development of advanced medical technologies in the region.

“The benefits of Versius are profound: patients will experience quicker recoveries and an earlier return to work, which ultimately leads to a healthier, more productive society,” she said.

“Moreover, the Versius system is designed with mobility and accessibility in mind. Its modular and scalable design allows it to fit seamlessly into any operating room without the need for major infrastruc-

ture changes.”

Prof. Hester Klopper, vice-chancellor and principal of the UFS, said the system helps specialists perform complex robotic-assisted surgeries with unprecedented accuracy.

“It will revolutionise how we train the next generation of health-care professionals,” she said.

“Our students and faculty will now have the unique opportunity to engage with a cutting-edge robotic system.”

A medical team went to Dubai in January to attend training in the use of the system.

Prof. Colin Noel, a general surgeon at Universitas, performed the first surgery with the system on 24 February.

From then to 6 March, nine procedures including radical prostatectomies and cholecystectomies were performed with the technology.

Prof. Freddie Claassen, an urologist at Universitas who has used the system in a radical prostatectomy , says the use of the robotic system holds many advantage to surgeons.

Claassen explains that the system imitates a fully functional arm with a hand, and can be used for a wide variety of surgeries.

“It is especially helpful when operating within the human pelvis. A surgeon would often have to stand for long hours in uncomfortable positions to

perform certain operations. This system will not only save time but also add a faster recovery time for patients.”

In a robotic surgery, a surgeon sits at a console in the theatre and can operate multiple arms of which one holds a high-definition camera.

“Before a surgeon can complete a surgery alone with the system, a proctor specialist will have to sign off on a surgeon’s skill. This will protect the patient, knowing that only qualified surgeons use the new system.”

One of the huge advantages of the system, is that it will enable better outcomes for patients, including shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, and quicker recoveries. Surgeons will benefit from enhanced visual and tactile feedback during operations, enabling them to perform procedures more accurately and safely.

With Southern Africa being a critical hub for medical advancements, the adoption of this system has the potential to inspire other hospitals across the region to follow suit. This further raises the standard of care for patients and medical professionals alike.

“As we move forward, we will continue to promote societal transformation by bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical solutions,” Letsoha-Matae said.

Leaders set out to make amends

With the setback the ANC experienced during the 2024 national and provincial elections, and in view of the 2026 municipal elections, Pres. Cyril Ramaphosa and an ANC Working Committee visited the Free State this past weekend.

Fikile Mbalula, secretary-general of the ANC, said at a news conference held at the Windmill Casino on Monday, 10 March, that the visit to the Free State was part of a national tour aimed at restoring public confidence in the ANC.

He said the renewal process was a direct response to the challenges facing the movement – which include declining public trust, inefficiencies in government, and the need to realign the ANC with the aspirations of the people.

Talking about the 2026 municipal elections in Mangaung, he said winning was not a given.

“We have to work for it,” he said.

In response to the high-profile ANC visit, Roy Jankielsohn, DA leader in the Free State, said it was a result of the self-inflicted political decay that has decimated the province.

The ANC in the Free State requested intervention from its national

structure as one of the outcomes in an internal report. Interventions that have failed include a Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) sub-committee that was responsible for addressing political education and cadre deployment.

Jankielsohn said the reliance on cadre deployment as an instrument of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR), while admitting the quality of cadres has deteriorated, remained the main reason for poor financial management and service delivery

collapse in provincial government departments and municipalities.

He said the continuous structural disintegration of the ANC as the governing party in the Free State had, through cadre deployment, manifested itself in all provincial, government and municipal administrations.

Mbalula said a skills audit of all senior municipal managers in the Free State was being conducted to ensure that qualified and competent individuals occupy key positions.

“The ANC will not tolerate cadre deployment that prioritises political connections over competence. Only those who can effectively deliver services will be retained or appointed.”

Jankielsohn said the ANC in the Free State cannot self-correct, hence the visit from Ramaphosa and the National Working Committee (NWC).

“The ANC must drop cadre deployment and ideological political education and focus on building financial and administrative capacity among deployed cadres until the DA can replace them with competent individuals,” Jankielsohn said.

Mangaung: ‘begroting ’n belediging’

’n geringe afname in moordsake. Hoewel dit tien minder as teen dieselfde tyd in 2023 was, was daar steeds 76 slagoffers.

BUS ACCIDENT PROBE ONGOING

TEBOHO SETENA

An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident in which ten bus passengers died on the Free State’s N6 road.

Barbara Creecy, minister of Transport, said probing will reveal the cause of the fatal crash that involved a Volvo truck and the long-distance City-toCity passenger bus of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), addressing the media on Monday, 10 March.

The briefing followed her visit with Monyatso Mahlatsi, Free State MEC for Health, to assess the conditions of two persons still admitted at the Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Creecy’s address included the progress made with the identification

of the ten deceased victims, and their bodies claimed by family. According to her, the two unidentified patients are in stable conditions, attributing this to treatment received for severe injuries sustained during the accident which occurred early in the morning on Wednesday, 5 March. The two adults, who underwernt surgeries performed at the hospital’s trauma unit, are part of the 33 passengers who boarded the Prasa bus.

“Based on medical reports of medical staff, we remain hopeful the two patients will make a full recovery. Prasa has provided extensive support to the inured passengers, families as well as those who sadly lost their loved ones. Support included site visit, transport, accommodation, repatriation of the remains and trauma counselling,” said Creecy.

Addressing the media are, from the left, Polediso Motsoe (secretary-general of the ANC in the Free State), Fikile Mbalula (secretary-general of the ANC), and Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri (national spokesperson for the ANC). Raak speel-speel jou tafels baas

VRYDAG 14 MAART

An exhibit of note awaits at Oliewenhuis

Works of the renowned artist Simon Venter will be on show at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum from today, 13 March, until Sunday, 4 May.

Venter is a self-taught artist whose practice explores the human condition, the interconnectedness of individuals, and the evolving relationship between tradition and technological progress.

Over the past nine years, he has developed a distinct visual language that merges Christian iconography with diverse art movements, past and present, creating thought-provoking works that engage with themes of identity, spirituality, and modernity.

The solo exhibition, Mythologies of Time, is a compelling exploration of the intersections between history, human existence, and technology.

The exhibition delves into the ways in which history and technology shape human perception, questioning the narratives we construct around progress and innovation.

Through a fusion of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated imagery and meticulous hand-rendered techniques, Venter challenges the role of AI in creative production. His work positions AI as a mechanical mirror, capable of mimicking but never truly capturing the depth of human artistic expression. Central to his body of work is the recurring representation of permanence and change.

Drawing inspiration from memento mori traditions, Venter reflects on the impermanence of life, emphasising the irreplaceable nature of embodied experience, historical continuity, and existential reflection in artistic practice.

The exhibition invites viewers into a thought-provoking dialogue about tradition in an era of rapid technological advancement.

By weaving together elements of mythology, art history, and digital intervention, Mythologies of Time stands as a testament to the enduring significance of human creativity in an increasingly digitised landscape.

The exhibition opens at 18:00, and a walkabout event is scheduled for Friday at 11:00

Childhood Asth Study

Attention parents of children aged 6 to less than 12 years old with asthma

We are looking for participants to take part in a clinical study to assess if a new daily inhaled medication for asthma could be more effective and improve the control of asthma in children.

Who is the study for?

To be considered for this study, your child must:

• Be at least 6 years old, and less than 12 years old.

• Have had asthma for at least 12 months.

Vooruitgang gunstig

In net 11 werksdae is 39 parke se gras gesny.

You will be under the care of clinical research doctors at the IATROS INTERNATIONAL facility for this study.

Tradition of transferring skills, knowledge celebrated

Three new certificates are available at the Peritum Agri Institute that held its official opening ceremony for the 2025 academic year on Monday, 17 February.

Peritum hosted its official opening ceremony at the Leopard and Lace venue, marking a significant milestone in agricultural education. With directors Emmie Pietersen and Belinda Louw at the helm, the event celebrated the institute’s continued commitment to developing skilled professionals in the agricultural sector.

This year marks the inaugural roll-out of the higher certificate programme,

complementing the well-established diploma programme in both animal and plant production.

Additionally, the institute has expanded its offerings with the introduction of the occupational certificate in grain depot management, addressing a crucial need for specialised training in the grain storage and logistics industry.

The more than 180 attendees, amongst them parents, students and lecturers, were reassured by Nihan Olivier, who opened the ceremony with scripture referring specifically to the need for hard work and dedication, with reference to agriculture.

Later on students and parents were showed the various prestigious part-

nerships that Peritum holds, such as partnerships with Senwes Equipment, John Deere Africa, the Middle-East and Asia, the Red Meat Producers Organisation (RPO) and with the Aeres University of Applied Sciences.

A key highlight of the event was the awarding of bursaries from Vinimark, reinforcing the institute’s dedication to making quality agricultural education accessible to deserving students.

The opening ceremony not only highlighted the institute’s growth but also reaffirmed its mission to drive excellence in agricultural education. As Peritum Agri Institute continues to expand, it remains dedicated to equipping students with necessary skills.

Deaf students’ dreams realised

TEBOHO SETENA

The Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, continues with the commitment to make it possible for persons with disabilities to follow through with their academic pursuits.

This was exemplified by the enrolment of two deaf students, Relebohile Motsoeneng and Aobakwe Tshenge.

The pair’s enrolment ties with the institution’s integrated and inclusive learning environment ensuring equal opportunities for all students, including those living with disabilities.

The university provides a comprehensive range of services designed to empower students with disabilities to reach their full potential, demonstrating its dedication to inclusivity.

First-year students Motsoeneng and Tshenge are former learners of the Thiboloha School for the Deaf and Blind in Phuthaditjhaba, and the St Vincent School for the Deaf in Gauteng, respectively.

Motsoeneng is pursuing her dream career in hospitality management.

“I am very excited to start my journey here at the CUT,” she said.

Motsoeneng’s journey with the university began when its recruiters visited her school in 2023.

This was after struggling with university applications.

“I saw an opportunity with the CUT, especially because they offered my desired programme, Hospitality Management.”

The delighted student mentioned that her biggest challenge since coming to the university was the ability to make new friends due to communication barriers, but she hoped to conquer that with time.

Motsoeneng’s experience highlights the unique challenges that deaf students face, particularly in social interactions, and the importance of creating an inclusive environment that addresses these challenges.

Tshenge is pursuing a BEd degree in the FETphase, specialising in technology.

He expressed great enthusiasm about becoming part of the institution and said he was

looking forward to creating lasting memories.

“I feel excited and challenged, but I am looking forward to my journey here at the CUT,” said Tshenge.

He acknowledged facing numerous barriers in pursuing higher education, including previous unsuccessful applications.

“I came to the CUT hoping that they would allow me an opportunity to study, and I am grateful that I have been accepted.”

Mohau Manyarela, deputy director of the university’s Disability Unit, said the unit was an important landmark for students with disabilities on campus.

“We recognise the stigma attached to disability, and our goal is to facilitate access to higher education for such student. Our aim is to ensure an enabling environment that empowers them to achieve their full potential by providing a range of services.

“Our labs are equipped with assistive devices and technology to support their learning needs, and we have introduced sign language to accommodate deaf students.”

As with the pair’s application process, the CUT’s Disability Unit continues to provide them with the necessary resources and support to ensure their success.

Tshenge and Motsoeng are part of the group of 4 515 first-time students enrolled for the 2025 academic year.

Law students supported in growth

TEBOHO SETENA

A collaborative work-related learning initiative between the University of the Free State’s (UFS) Faculty of Law and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Free State is envisaged to place graduate students on the cutting edge of the profession.

The two entities officially launched the experiential learning project “In the Shadow of the Prosecutor” on Wednesday, 26 February, at the Centenary Complex at the university’s Bloemfontein campus.

A formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed, paving the way to work together to arm law graduates with much-needed knowledge and experience.

According to the two parties the programme, a first in South Africa, marks the beginning of an exciting partnership in producing future professional attorneys of high calibre. Designed to enrich legal education through hands-on exposure to prosecutorial work, the programme is set to officially start on 17 March, with the first intake of students to “shadow” in prosecution in the different courts. They will

observe court hearings during the term of the programme.

The target is between 15 and 20 candidates, whose skills will be sharpened to become what Adv. Shamila Batohi, national director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), termed “the people’s lawyers”.

Those qualifying are third and final year students of the university’s Faculty of Law.

While delivering a keynote address, themed “Training Through Experience – Further Illustrating the Educational Value of Shadowing,” Batohi emphasised the importance of the future legal practitioners upholding the principles of the profession.

“We hope that this programme will make students marketable, as most will be graduates with the necessary work-related experience. Students will learn critical prosecution skills such as how prosecution decides on matters, assesses the credibility of witnesses, determines the standard of proof, and what reasonable prospects of success are met before deciding to proceed with prosecution.”

Batohi said through the programme, students would also learn how to deal with victims, families and litigation,

Goeie begin vir sportlui

LIENTJIE MENTZ

Hy sê talle topsportlui in Suid-Afrika was aanvanklik gimnaste.

Jannie sê hy is opgewonde oor gimnastiek in Bloemfontein.

Local teams ready to lay it all on the field

TEBOHO

The eagerly-awaited Bloemfontein derby between two university men’s rugby teams on Monday, 17 March, underline their aspirations in the Varsity Cup.

The University of the Free State’s (UFS) Shimlas and the Ixias of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, are looking for redemption in addition to the bragging rights in the derby.

They will face off at the Shimla Park Stadium in the round five match of South Africa’s premier university rugby championship. Kick-off is at 19:00.

Shimlas claimed the bragging rights in two previous encounters in 2023 and 2024, and are eying to extend the record to three in Monday’s pulsating fixture. The Ixias, in turn, have won three derbies consecutively against the local rivals.

Both are looking to redeem themselves after crucial defeats against the University of Pretoria’s (UP) Tuks and the North-West University’s (NWU) Eagles in round four fixtures played on Monday, 10 March.

The 14 – 59 defeat of the defending champion Shimlas by the Eagles was the second in a row, similar to the Ixias who lost 26 – 63 to Tuks.

Both the Shimlas and Ixias were defeated by the Stellenbosch University’s Maties, 37 – 45 and 59 – 0, respectively.

The Western Cape team has managed to keep a clean record in the competition.

The Ixias and Shimlas are under pressure to consolidate their standing in the tournament.

Even more so, the Shimlas are pressured to defend their sought-after trophy. The UFS men are desperate for a win to keep their aspirations of reach the semifinal alive.

The Ixias are unable to build on an impressive start which saw them record back-to-back wins over the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Ikeys – respectively, 29 – 13 and 23 – 19.

The CUT men’s loss of momentum so early in the competition harkens back to 2023 and 2024, when they finished at the bottom of the log with two wins.

The poor run forced them to relegation playoffs to retain their current status in the premier university tournament.

Both the Ixias and Shimlas are striving to make history in their qualifying for the semifinal.

The inconsistency of the CUT lads, however, hinders their ambition of becoming a force to be reckoned with.
