Altesaam 70 leerlinge het gister saam met hul ouers vir gr. 1 by die Laerskool President Brand (PBS) in Pellissier aangetree. Al die gr. 1’s het tydens die saalopening ’n klokkie gelui wat die begin van hul skoolloopbaan inlui. Hier in haar klas is Lente Janse van Rensburg, wat al 38 jaar lank ’n onderwyser is en dit nog baie geniet. Matrieks oortref 90%

Die Vrystaat spog vanjaar nie net met die beste uitslae in die land vir 2024 se seniorsertifikaateksamen nie, die provinsie het dit sommer gedoen met ’n goeie slaagsyfer van 91%.
Wat net so ’n groot prestasie is, is die Vrystaat se 48,2%baccalaureus-slaagsyfer – wat ook die beste in die land is. Boonop is dit die sesde jaar agtereenvolgens dat die Vrystaatse matrieks met die topplek in die land spog.
Twee leerlinge van Grey-kollege (sekondêr) is onder die tien topleerlinge wat betref 2024 se matriekpresteerders in die Vrystaat. Chris Goosen staan tweede in
die provinsie, naas Susan Bender van die Hoërskool Voortrekker in Bethlehem. Chris is ook onder die tien topleerlinge in rekeningkunde (98%) en wiskunde (95%) in die Vrystaat.
Hy het nege vakke geneem en onderskeidings in al sy vakke behaal. Sy ander vakke was: lewenswetenskap (96%), toegepaste rekenaartegnologie (96%), Afrikaans eerste taal (96%), Duits tweede addisionele taal (95%), lewensoriëntering (94%), fisiese wetenskap (92%) en Engels eerste addisionele taal (85%). Chris was ook een van die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) en Netwerk24 se Matrikulant van die jaar-finaliste.
Izak du Plessis was onder die tien topleerlinge, asook onder die tien topleerlinge in rekeningkunde. Hy het 98% in rekeningkunde behaal.
Vir sy ander sewe vakke het hy alles onderskeidings gekry. Dit is: lewenswetenskap (97%), fisiese wetenskap (94%), lewensoriëntering (94%), wiskunde (93%), Duits tweede addisionele taal (91%), Afrikaans eerste taal (89%) en Engels eerste addisionele taal (86%).
Vier van die Vrystaat se sewe onderwysdistrikte was ook onder die tien topdistrikte van die 77 in die land. Motheo, die distrik waarin Bloemfonteinse skole val, se slaagsyfer was 92,2%, en die baccalaureus-slaagsyfer was 50,1%.
Drie gr. 1’s aan die Laerskool President Brand (PBS) is van links Eduané Naudé, Kiara Taljaard en Ariella Hlongwane.

Laaste twee kameelperde dood

Eers was daar vier, maar weens die tragiese toeloop van omstandighede is daar nou geen van die ikoniese kameelperde op Naval Hill in Bloemfontein oor nie.
Andri Grobbelaar, ’n dierkundige en voorsitter van Vriende van Franklin, sê die dood van die laaste twee kameelperde is ’n reuse-terugslag.
In die jongste voorval is die twee kameelperdkoeie op 4 en 8 Januarie onderskeidelik weens ’n
bakteriese infeksie dood. Grobbelaar sê aanvanklik is daar gedink dat weerlig op 3 Januarie tot die twee se dood gelei het.
Ná ’n ondersoek deur ’n span van die staatsveearts is egter bepaal dat hul dood veroorsaak is deur Clostridium novyi/chauvoei, ’n bakterieë wat algemeen in die grond en die ingewande van diere voorkom en gewoonlik skadeloos is.
Die veeartse verduidelik akute en dodelike infeksies kan voorkom wanneer spesifieke omgewingstoestande heers.
“In hierdie geval was dit die perfekte storm,” sê Grobbelaar. “Weens die droogte, en die reën wat laat gekom het, was die diere onder stres.”
Die infeksies het begin weens die groei van nuwe plante ná die reën. Daar was dus proteïene en glukose beskikbaar, maar die nadelige bakterieë het die oorhand gekry. Gifstowwe word deur die bakterieë geproduseer, wat tot die diere se dood gelei het.
Die Vrystaatse departement van kleinsakeontwikkeling, toerisme en omgewingsake (Destea) se
wild-veeartse is betrek om gespesialiseerde hulp te verleen.
Grobbelaar sê die wild op Naval Hill ontvang byvoeding in die droogte, en die waterbronne word gereeld nagegaan.
“Ons en die metro se personeel onderneem om ondersoek in te stel na die voorval.”
Die Vriende van Franklin het die kameelperdkoeie Zuri (4) en Kariba (5) twee jaar gelede na die reservaat gebring.
Die twee bulle Bulperd (17) en sy kalfie, Paseka (5), is verlede jaar dood – waarskynlik weens ’n bakleiery tussen die twee.
Rook laat inwoners na hul asem snak

Inwoners van Bayswater en Hillside View het die afgelope Kersvakansie behoorlik gestik aan die massas rook, wat gereeld oor die noordelike stortingsterrein gehang het.
Bridgette van der Merwe van Bayswater United Rekopane sê op 24 Desember was die rook so dik dat dit soos mis gelyk het. Die gesin bly in Orleansweg, Bayswater.
“My seun Michael (7) se bors trek toe van die rook. As daar so baie rook is, stuur ek hom om by maatjies in ’n ander woonbuurt te slaap. Dit gebeur gereeld.
Ons het ’n wit Kersfees gehad, maar nie om die regte redes nie.”
Patric Klaas, wat sedert 2012 in Park Avenue, Hillside View, woon, sê die probleem het omstreeks 2015 begin en het sedertdien vererger. Op 4 Januarie het hy saam met ’n ander inwoner die stortingsterrein besoek en met onwettige herwinnaars gesels. Hy sê hierdie mense maak dikwels vure wat dae lank smeul. Klaas het ook gemeld dat mense dikwels sigaretstompies gooi wat die vullis aan die brand steek, en daar was selfs gevalle waar warm as gemors gesmyt is.
“Die munisipaliteit beloof elke keer om die onwettige inwoners te verwyder, maar dit gebeur nooit. Intussen is daar voortdurend brande

Kelebogile Tladi sê dit is nie net die rook wat inwoners se lewe hel maak nie, maar ook slegte reuke. Tladi sê veral as dit gereën het en brande geblus word, is dit die slegte reuke wat hul lewe versuur.
Ntabiseng Jafta voeg by dat dit nie net die gesondheid van die mense is wat deur die konstante rook benadeel word nie, maar dat inwoners gereeld dooie diere by die vullishoop ruik.
Klaas sê die bestuursliggaam van Park Avenue ly geldelik oor die meenthuiskompleks se nabyheid aan die stortingsterrein.
“Beleggers kan nie hul meenthuise verkoop of verhuur kry nie,” sê hy.
Klaas sê ook die waarde van die
eiendomme neem nie toe nie, maar bly dieselfde as jare tevore.
“Ons het ’n regsmening ingewin en wil die Mangaung-metro dwing om die stortingsterrein te skuif,” sê hy.
“Die metro moet ook beter prosesse toepas sodat onwettige mense nie op die stortingsterrein bly of vuur maak nie.”
’n Petisie word ook nou opgetrek waarin inwoners hul klagtes oor die stortingsterrein kan skryf en aan die Provinsiale Wetgewer oorhandig om die metro te dwing om iets aan die saak te doen.
Van der Merwe sê mense wat gereeld die rooklug hier inasem, verstaan nie dat dit dalk tot langtermyn komplikasies kan lei nie.

Koerantmense trek saam

Danksy ’n goeie borgskap van AVBOB kan die Forum vir Gemeenskapsjoernaliste (FCJ) weer streekseminare vir joernaliste en redaksielede van gemeenskapskoerante aanbied.
Die FCJ het die naweek ’n suksesvolle streekseminaar by die BON Hotel Bloemfontein Central in Bloemfontein aangebied, met redaksielede van oor die Vrystaat, Noord-Kaap en Noordwes heen wat die geleentheid op Vrydag 10 Januarie bygewoon het.
Dit is nie die eerste keer dat perslui in Bloemfontein saamtrek nie. Die grootste byeenkoms van perslui in Suid-Afrika het op 15 Oktober 1912 in die stad plaasgevind. ’n Paar jaar vroeër het Oscar Henry Frewin, destyds die redakteur van die Middelburg Observer, voorbrand gemaak vir ’n vereniging vir plaaslike koerante.
Uit byeenkomste wat gevolg het, is die eerste vereniging gestig, en die FCJ het in 1990 uit hierdie organisasie tot stand gekom.
Die hoofspreker op die plaaslike geleentheid was Tobie van den Bergh, een van die stigterslede van die FCJ en oudredakteur van die Middelburg Observer
Hy het verlede jaar, toe hy afgetree het, ’n boek uitgegee oor sy loopbaan wat oor 48 jaar strek: Ink is dikker as bloed. Hy het joernaliste geïnspireer met onder meer ’n aanbieding oor die drukkersduiwel, die impak van voorblaaie en die verskil wat joernaliste in hul gemeenskappe kan maak.

Die groep het ook die AVBOBmuseum in Eerstelaan, wat die geskiedenis van dié begrafnisgroep uitbeeld, besoek.
Hier het Paul de Lange, kurator, saam met die groep gestap deur die museum, wat onder meer ’n versameling model-lykswaens van verskillende skaalgroottes huisves. Die versameling van 266 modelletjies van
MARATHON
wyle dr. Chris Molyneux is waarskynlik die grootste versameling modellykswaens ter wêreld.
Die AVBOB-museum is een van net ’n handjievol museums in die wêreld wat op begrafnisse fokus. De Lange het ’n reuse-rol gespeel toe die museum in 2019 in Bloemfontein geopen is. AVBOB is in 1918 hier in die stad begin. ) Skakel De Lange by 071-491-7771.

Runners who are planning to do the Comrades or the Two Oceans later in 2025: Remember that the Mimosa Mall Marathon is a qualifying race. Since the race was hosted for the first time last year, a marathon has been included –making it a provincial qualifying event for the Comrades.
Most athletes who aim to take part in the Comrades or the Two Oceans, or both, start their training on 1 January. For those who have approached their training in this way, 1 March is the perfect time to run their first marathon of the year.
The race on 1 March will also be the last opportunity to qualify for the Two Oceans 56 km and the 21 km.
With this event including a marathon (42 km), half marathon (21 km), a 10 km and a 5 km race, it is the perfect opportunity to get the muscles going. There are also R32 500 of Mimosa Mall gift vouchers up for grabs for event winners in various age categories.
The Mimosa Mall Marathon is presented in association with the Louzanne Coetzee Foundation and is organised by Bloemfontein Striders.
Entry fees are R200 (42 km), R150 (21 km) and R120 (10 km). A temporary licence of R50 can be bought before the race. The entry fee for the 5 km fun run is R80.
Mimosa Mall will be turning 25 years old this year, and the marathon is the cherry on top of the birthday celebrations.
André Rossow, Mimosa Mall marketing manager, says they are looking forward to this prestigous race and call on all Free State athletes to enter and be part of the fun.

Inspirasie vir ander matrieks

Met die Vrystaat wat vanjaar weer die beste matriekslaagsyfer in die land het, word daar dikwels net gefokus op die toppresteerders.
Daar is egter talle van die 615 429 leerlinge wat landwyd die eksamen geslaag het, wat groot uitdagings te bowe moes kom.
Een so ’n leerling is Andries van der Walt van die Hoërskool Jim Fouché wat Dinsdag gehoor het dat hy sy matriek-eksamen geslaag het en al sy vakke deurgekom het.
Andries, wat met Aspergersindroom gediagnoseer is, skitter in wiskunde en was verlede jaar derde in die wiskunde-olimpiade in sy afdeling.
Sy ma, Dorothy, sê hulle is dankbaar dat Andries sy senior sertifikaat geslaag het. “Hy het die laaste paar jaar nie meer onderskeidings in wiskunde gekry nie, maar ons wou graag vir hom die geleentheid gee om wiskunde as skoolvak te neem.”
Toe hy in gr. 7 was, het hulle met dr. David Griessel, ’n pediater wat spesialiseer in kinders op die outisme-spektrum, gesels oor of hulle Andries in ’n spesiale skool met kleiner klasse moet plaas. Juis omdat Andries so goed gevaar het in wiskunde, het Griessel aanbeveel dat hy in ’n gewone skool bly waar hy wiskunde kon neem.
Andries het van gr. 3 al ekstra wiskunde-lesse geneem. Hy het deur die jare uitgeblink in wiskunde en aan talle nasionale en internasionale wiskunde olimpiades deelgeneem. Verlede
jaar was hy derde in die Vrystaatse wiskunde-olimpiade.
“Hy het net nie verstaan hoekom moet hy wys hoe hy by die antwoorde van die berekeninge uitkom nie,” vertel Dorothy. Andries wou ook nie tale neem nie. Sy ander vakke behalwe Afrikaans, Engels en wiskunde was skeinat, ingenieursgrafika en tegnologie en rekenaarstoepassingstegnologie.
“Andries het nie belang gestel in skool nie en dit was ’n stryd tydens die eksamen.”
Sy sê die onderwysers by die Hoërskool Jim Fouché het Andries ondersteun. “Hulle het uit hul pad gegaan om hom te help.”
Dorothy vertel hy moes in gr. 9 ’n opstel skryf oor sy rolmodel. “Hy het botweg geweier. Hy het eenvoudig gesê hy wil nie soos iemand anders wees nie.
“Die onderwyser het bes gegee en Andries het toe ’n voordrag gemaak oor hoekom hy tevrede is met wie hy is.” Dorothy sê hy dink buite die boks. Andries oorweeg ’n beroep as motorwerktuigkundige.

Ses hande op drie klaviere – dit en nog baie meer is waarmee drie pianiste van Bloemfontein die gehoor tydens ’n prettige vertoning op 1 Februarie gaan vermaak.
Petro Engelbrecht sê die idee dat sy, Heinrich Lategan en Anton Esterhuyse saam op een verhoog klavier speel, het gekom nadat sy ’n video gekyk het van Three piano’s on fire
“Die pianiste het so lekker saamgespeel, dat ek besluit het ons moet dit ook doen.”
Hul weergawe heet Three’s not a crowd Sy sê dit is besonder moeilik vir twee pianiste om gelyk akkoorde te druk, veral as hulle sag speel. “Wanneer ses hande gelyk speel, is die uitdaging soveel groter.”
Anton en Heinrich is gekies vir hul vaardighede om bladmusiek te lees en te improviseer.
“Ons drie musici gaan tussen die klaviere rondbeweeg en by mekaar oorneem. Soms sommer so twee-twee op ’n klavier speel en wie weet, dalk land ons al drie voor een klavier.”
Vir afwisseling gaan hulle ook ander instrumente by die vertoning insluit. Petro speel ook trekklavier, Anton gaan by tye fluit speel en Heinrich gaan op een van sy Chinese instrumente, die erhu, die gehoor vermaak. Anton is benewens pianis, orrelis en fluitspeler ook komponis en verwerker, vervaardiger en
musiekregisseur.
Hy is die musiekdirekteur van die Geloofsentrum Universitas.
Heinrich is die stigter en dirigent van die Bloemfonteinse Rhapsodyorkes en dirigent van die Vrystaatse jeugorkes.
Hy is die hoofperkussiespeler van die Vrystaatse simfonieorkes (FSSO) en orkestreer en verwerk musiek.
Hy is ook nou musiekonderwyser by die Laerskool Willem Postma. Petro is ’n vryskutmusikant wat in konserte en by gesellighede optree. Sy het die Rhapsody in Bloem-konsertreeks waarop geld vir musiekbeurse ingesamel word, begin. Sy is ook ’n Unisaeksaminator en beoordelaar in kunswedstryde oor Suid-Afrika en Namibië heen.

genooi om ’n piekniekmandjie saam te bring, asook stoele of komberse.

Ballet deel verhaal in Bfn

’n Bloemfonteinse danser en ’n paar jong ballerinas van die stad gaan einde Februarie saam met die professionele span van die Mzansi-balletgeselskap in die Sand du Plessis-teater ’n opvoering aanbied.
The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe is ’n vollengte ballet-opvoering met kostuums deur bekende ontwerper David Tlale en ’n stel wat deur Andrew Botha ontwerp is.
Dirk Badenhorst, wat die Mzansiballetgeselskap in 2017 begin het, sê die opvoering is ’n samestelling van klassieke ballet, Afro-ballet en kontemporêre dans, met skeppende choreografie deur Angela Revie en insette deur Mdu Nhlapo.
Die musiek, wat ’n sleutel-element tot die sukses van die vertoning is, is gekomponeer deur Grammy-wenner Wouter Kellerman,
saam met komponiste soos Mark Cheyne, SJ Khosa, dr. Cara Stacey, Matthijs van Dijk en Mpho Molikeng.
“Die ballet vertel ’n storie wat ’n brug bou tussen die mitiese, die antieke en die moderne wêreld,” sê Badenhorst.
“Dit fokus op die antieke Mapungubwegemeenskap en die besonderse waarde van die argeologiese ontdekking van 1931, van ’n middel-eeuse renosterbeeld wat met goud beslaan is.”
Badenhorst sê wat dié ballet-opvoering uiters toepaslik maak, is dat die verhaal deel vorm van die gr. 6-skoolsilabus. Die opvoerings word aangebied van 27 Februarie tot 1 Maart, daagliks om 15:00, met ’n ekstra vertoning op Saterdag 1 Maart om 19:00.

A night of true 80’s spirit was celebrated at the V-Models Fashion Show hosted at the Windmill Casino in Desember, with big hair, tulle skirts and splashes of neon.
The fashion show presented local designs by Nico Naude, Dipula Designer Wear, Santie Truter Designs, Nalete Creations, Evolve Fashion and Wildest Dreams Dress Hire.
Carla Dirker was crowned senior model of the year, with Liané Schmidt crowned as junior model of the year.
Vanessa Versfeld-Weber, manager of VModels in Bloemfontein, has expressed great satisfaction in the evenings’ entertainment and thanked training manager, Tegan Bothes, Yolandi and Martin Bothes and all collaborators for their immense efforts in pulling off a fantastic show.

Bright year beckons
Arthur Browne Model Coaching hosted its annual year-end function and awards ceremony for 2024, highlighting the year’s successes and achievements.
Founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Arthur Browne says they are looking forward to a wonderful 2025.
“The year 2024 was a challenging year, but all the success also made it one of the most prosperous – having two national title holders from Bloemfontein being crowned, and having our models feature in numerous projects and fashion shows locally, as well as internationally.”
Monet Meyer was crowned Miss Jnr South Africa and Serena Donachie was crowned Miss Unversal South Africa for 2024.
“We have also secured nine models numerous agency placements, of which five will be relocating to Cape Town in 2025 to be working models in the industry while the remaining four models will be in development.
“It makes me feel proud of the work that we do and to be in the position to assist models to reach for their dreams – to open the doors to these opportunities and have the raw talent of Bloemfontein discovered by industry professionals.”
Browne says they are looking forward to reaching new heights in the future by placing Bloemfonteins’ aspiring models and talent back on the map to be developed, coached and ultimately discovered.

Intussen het ’n pickleball-baan ook hier oopgemaak wat die verskeidenheid aktiwiteite by dié klub wat pluimbal, muurbal, ’n gimnasium insluit, verder uitgebrei het. Lucy van Vuuren van Luvane Bootcamp sê danksy bydraes wat ontvang is, kan die ou tartanbaan waar hulle oefen vernuwe word. Dit sluit in die vul van gate en ’n nuwe boonste laag tartan. “Ons is dankbaar vir almal wat gehelp het met die verbeterings. Ons is ook dankbaar vir die Mangaung-metro wie se eiendom hierdie is, wat ons die vryheid gegee het om verbeterings aan die geriewe aan te bring om dit vir almal lekkerder te maak,” sê Lucy.
