Maselspoort Water Works to be completed by September Summit calls for investors
Following a Property Indaba and an Indaba on infrastructure, the Executive Mayor of the Mangaung Metro, Gregory Nthatisi, invited stakeholders and investors to attend an Investment Summit in Bloemfontein this week.
The summit, which began on Wednesday, featured presentations and panel discussions aimed at unlocking investment opportunities in the region.
Following inputs by Nthatisi, was Yunus Hoosen, Head of Investment and Spatial Industrial Development at the DTIC, a presentation on investment opportunities in Mangaung by Sello More, City Manager and a presentation on the metro’s infrastructure programme by Revelation Masobeng, HOD of Technical Services in Mangaung. Panel discussions focused on property development and positioning Mangaung as a prime tourism destination.
During his speech at the Infrastructure Indaba, More acknowledged that decades of neglect had led to an unsustainable water supply. He highlighted the challenge of attracting investors to a metro where water disruptions are a daily occurrence.

DA Councillor Tjaart van der Walt further stressed this issue, pointing out that reports presented at the Infrastructure Investment Indaba
indicated the city is already grappling with a water supply deficit. “This means water interruptions are unavoidable on a rolling basis until corrective action is taken,” he said.
According to More Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu face a deficit of 76 ML during peak hours, especially in the northern parts of Bloemfontein.
Van der Walt added that the situation could have been improved if the Department of Water and Sanitation’s recommended water restrictions had been implemented earlier in August 2024.
However, there is hope on the horizon. Projections from Mangaung Metro indicate that the refurbishment of the Maselspoort Water Treatment Plant is set to be completed by September, which will increase its capacity from 85 to 160 ML per day.
While this is a step forward, it is just one of many challenges the metro faces in promoting economic growth.

The metro’s efforts to attract investors are further hindered by challenges facing current business owners. Mike Spencer, a Professional Associated Valuer and Master Practitioner in Real Estate, shared that developers looking for sites in town face significant difficulties. Spencer noted that many properties in the metro could be used for affordable apartment developments, helping integrate the populations from different areas of the city.
In a letter to Nthatisi following the Property Indaba, Spencer also raised concerns over the zoning of residential properties for business use. He explained that in areas like Westdene, high rates—nearly 30% of potential rental income—make it difficult for property owners to compete with illegally run businesses.
“There is a great deal of goodwill, but also a lot of frustration,” Spencer said, urging action to address these issues and help the area flourish.

Frustrated by the Mangaung Metro’s inaction, residents often resort to land grabs, hoping for relocation to a suitable area.
DA councillor Thomas Ferreira said the DA will intensify its efforts to expose and pressure the metro to utilise allocated grants as intended ensuring housing and essential services reach vulnerable communities.
“The Mangaung Metro has seen a surge in illegal land invasions over the past years. Many individuals occupying land unlawfully cite the dire lack of housing and municipal services as their primary reason,” Ferreira said.
One of these informal settlements is Sejake in ward 15. Residents have waited for over 20 years for basic services.

At the Mangaung Council meeting on 31 January, the Auditor-General (AG) exposed shocking financial mismanagement. The Informal
Settlement Upgrading Partnership Grant (ISUPG) was underspent by 25%, amounting to R43 million, while the Urban Settlement Development Grant (USDG) saw a 1.2% underspending, totalling R5 million.
The AG stated: “The inability of the municipality to properly manage its grant funding causes service delivery breakdowns, leaving the most vulnerable in our community behind.”
This is not the first time such underspending has been flagged. These funds are specifically allocated to uplift informal settlers in places like Sejake, ensuring access to housing and basic services, as guaranteed by the South African Constitution.
“The DA will not stand idly by while millions meant for community upliftment are wasted.
“We will hold the municipality accountable, demand urgent corrective action, and ensure these funds are spent efficiently to improve the lives of those who need them most.”
Growth stimulated

Lucy van Vuuren van Luvane Bootcamp, saam met ander mense wat verskillende aktiwiteite by die sportklub aanbied, het begin om die hulp van ondernemings te vra om die geboue hier op te knap. “Dit behoort aan die Mangaung-metro, maar
uiteindelik is dit die publiek wat die geriewe hier gebruik. Ons het danksy hulp van mense soos Salome le Roux en Mariette Bezuidenhout ondernemings en organisasies soos die Fichardtparkwoonbuurtvereniging (FWA) en Hospitaalparkwoonbuurtvereniging genader om ons te help met opknappings,” verduidelik Lucy. After a successful, soul searching visit to the Southern States of America just over a year ago where there was no shortage of inspiration and motivation, Bloemfontein based singer and songwriter, Trevor Bouwer is about to launch his new solo album, The Acoustic Sessions. Trevor used his time and experiences from being abroad to write a soulful, warm and touching album in which stories are told and experiences shared.
The full, 13 track album is heavily influenced by his time spent in Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans and Texas.
True to his roots, Trevor’s song writing is still story based and is a lot more personal than some of his previous work.
The stripped down acoustic
songs are based in soft rock with a generous portion of Country Music flavour, topped off with a hint of Southern Blues.
The album is being released worldwide on 25 February, and is followed with the official launch at the Aasvoël Club on Friday, 28 February where he’ll be sharing the stage with South African legend, Koos Kombuis.
After this, Trevor will be promoting the album in Johannesburg for a while before he returns to the USA later this year where he’ll continue to promote his album and song writing, particularly in Nashville.
The Acoustic Sessions by Trevor Bouwer will be available on all major streaming platforms on 25 February and is worth having a listen to – particularly with your favourite glass of something nice in hand.
UV-student deel van balletgeselskap

’n Bloemfonteiner is deel van die Mzanzi-balletgeselskap wat binnekort in die Sand du Plessis-teater te sien is.
Donavan Havenga, ’n student aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat, vertolk ’n rol in The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe.
“Dit is heel toevallig dat ek een van die hoofrolle in die produksie gekry het,” vertel Donavan.
“Ek het voorheen gehelp met die choreografie en toe een van die rolle beskikbaar word, het hulle my gevra om dit te dans.”
Donavan het al in produksies soos die Abba en in die ballet-weergawe van Carmen gedans.
Hy help ook die ballerinas van die dans-studios in Bloemfontein wat in die Mzanzi-vertoning optree, met hul choreografie.
Daar is sowat 20 ballerinas van alle ouderdomme van Bloemfontein wat ook op die verhoog gaan wees.
The Gold Rhino of Mapungubwe is ’n vollengte ballet-opvoering met kostuums deur bekende ontwerper David Tlale en ’n stel wat deur Andrew Botha ontwerp is.
Dirk Badenhorst, wat die Mzansiballetgeselskap in 2017 begin het, sê die opvoering is ’n samestelling van klassieke ballet, Afro-ballet en kontemporêre dans, met skeppende choreografie deur Angela Revie en insette deur Mdu Nhlapo.
Die musiek, wat ’n sleutel-element tot die sukses van die vertoning is, is gekomponeer deur Grammywenner Wouter Kellerman, saam met komponiste soos Mark Cheyne, SJ Khosa, dr. Cara Stacey, Matthijs van
Dijk en Mpho Molikeng.
“Die ballet vertel ’n storie wat ’n brug bou tussen die mitiese, die antieke en die moderne wêreld,” sê Badenhorst.
“Dit fokus op die antieke Mapungubwe-gemeenskap en die besonderse waarde van die argeologiese ontdekking van 1931, van ’n middel-eeuse renosterbeeld wat met goud beslaan is.”
Badenhorst sê wat dié ballet-
opvoering uiters toepaslik maak, is dat die verhaal deel vorm van die gr. 6-skoolsilabus. Die opvoerings word aangebied van 27 Februarie tot 1 Maart, daagliks om 15:00, met ’n ekstra vertoning op Saterdag 1 Maart om 19:00.

Deelnemers van tot so jonk as 5 jaar het die naweek deelgeneem aan die Vrystaatse kettieskiet-ope-toernooi wat op die Nebo-landgoed net buite die stad aangebied is.
Deelnemers van sover as die WesKaap, Gauteng en Mpumalanga het deelgeneem aan die baan- en velditems in die toernooi.
Teikens is op afstande van 5 m, 10 m, 15 m en 20 m geskiet.
Henk le Roux, voorsitter van Vrystaat-kettieskiet, sê hulle was baie tevrede met die opkoms na die toernooi.
“Dit was wonderlik dat daar so baie jong skuts aan die toernooi kom deelneem het.
“Die toekoms van die sport lê in kinders. Dit is so lekker om die erfenis van kettieskiet met hulle te deel.”
Kettieskiet is onlangs as Die Voortrekkers se amptelike sport aangewys. Dit was die naweek egter nie net Voortrekkers wat vir die eerste keer kom deelneem het nie.
Vrystaatse kampioene wat die dag uitgeblink het, was Stiaan Maritz (8) van die Laerskool Universitas wat as die Vrystaatse laerskoolkampioen op
10 m aangewys is. FJ van Aswegen (11) van die Laerskool Willem Postma, is die Vrystaat-laerskoolkampioen oor 15 m.
Miané Bekker (13) van die Hoër Meisieskool Oranje is die Vrystaatse hoërskole-meisieskampioen. Conrad Botha (16) van die Hoërskool Jim Fouché is die Vrystaatse hoërskole seunskampioen. Die dag is op ’n hoogtepunt afgesluit met die prysuitdeling waar medaljes aan die
wenners uitgedeel is. Die Vrystaat het geskitter en het ’n totaal van 71 medaljes: 32 goud, 21 silwer en 18 brons. Die Vrystaatspan bestaan uit Henk Le Roux, Adriaan Bekker en Conrad Botha.
“Kettieskiet as ’n sport groei vinnig in Suid-Afrika,” sê Le Roux.
“Daar gaan nog heelwat kompetisies in die Vrystaat plaasvind.”

In hul eerste Varsitybekerwedstryd in die 2025-seisoen Maandag 18 Februarie op die Danie Craven-stadion in Stellenbosch, het die Universiteit van Stellenbosch (Maties) hul semi-finaalverlies verlede jaar teen die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) gewreek in ’n naelbytoorwinning,
Gelukkig kon die Sentrale Universiteit vir Tegnologie (SUT) se Ixias vir Bloemfontein ’n oorwinning behaal teen die span van die Universiteit van Pretoria (Tuks) wat ook nou in dié liga speel. Die Ixias het in die eerste ronde van die Varsitybeker ’n oorwinning verseker met baie ervare spelers om Tuks te midde van gietende reën 29 - 13 te klop.
