Die hele Bloemfonteinse skoolgemeenskap is in rou gedompel oor die drie kinders wat Vrydag in ’n motorongeluk dood is, nie ver van die Laerskool Dr. C.F. Visser nie.
’n Troosdiens is op Dinsdag 28 Januarie by die skool gehou om die lewe van Leané van Papendorp (8) en haar nefies, Ryan (6) en Ayden Smit (8), te gedenk.
Tennique Joubert (8), wat saam met hulle in die motor was, sterk aan in die Pelonomi-hospitaal nadat sy daar ’n operasie ondergaan het.
Leané se ma, Adri Jonck, het die oranje Chevrolet Spark bestuur waarin sy Vrydag die kinders skool toe geneem het, toe die bestuurder van ’n Toyota Hilux kort ná 07:00 by die verkeerslig by die Aljo’s Superspar op die N8 in hulle vasgery het.
Op die troosdiens het Riekie Venter, skoolhoof van Dr. Visser, vir die ouers van die kinders wat in die ongeluk betrokke was, gesê dat die hele skoolgemeenskap en die land saam met hulle rou.
“Ek hoop julle vind gerusstelling daarin dat almal by die skool vir hulle lief was. Hul fisieke plekkies is nou leeg, maar hul pragtige menswees sal altyd in ons gedagtes bly.”
Bertus Smit, wat Vrydae by die skool die Christenprogram Vissies vir Jesus aanbied, het die kinders en ouers vertroos en gesê dat Ryan, Ayden en Leané se liggies nou in die hemel skyn.
Die drie onderwysers wat vir die kinders klas gegee het, Marlie Visser, Cailynne Goetsch en Bianca du Plessis het daarna elk ’n roosboom by die skool geplant ter nagedagtenis aan die drie leerlinge wat oorlede is.

onderwysers het daarna die geleentheid gekry om blomme neer te lê voor foto’s van Ryan, Ayden en Leané.
Die hele oggend lank het trane vrylik oor kinderwange gevloei, en sommiges het onbedaarlik gehuil oor hul maats wat nie meer daar is nie.
Talle kinders het Jonck, wat duidelik nog baie seer het ná die ongeluk, ’n stywe drukkie gegee en haar getroos.
“Dit was nie tannie se skuld nie,” het een leerling vir haar gesê en vir haar ’n blommetjie gegee.
Kinders het ook drukkies vir die twee boeties se ouers, Martin en Yolandé Smit, gegee.

Mangaung as worthwhile investment a tough sell

With the hope of making its property investable, the Mangaung Metro (MMM) held a property indaba on Friday, 17 January, in the Bloemfontein City Hall. It explored various means of turning the property market into one of its economic drivers, and tackling the issues which hamstrung the municipality’s ability to achieve property growth.
Presentations on how the municipality can drive and achieve property growth were made by experts, stakeholders, and developers in the property market, commercial and residential property sector.
Nokuthula Chakane, head of human settlements planning and economic development, and Zuziwe Thekisho, chief financial officer (CFO) of the MMM, presented the municipality’s reform action plan, and proposed incentives policy and rates clearance reforms.
The reform plans are aimed at unlocking the municipality’s
investment opportunities in property for developers, advancing development, and rebuilding the city collapsed economy.
Gregory Nthatisi, executive mayor, pointed that the city is striving to address its rates and taxes, which are by far higher than any metro municipality.
According to him, the rates and taxes was besetting the municipality, in addition to the challenge of infrastructure maintenance, effective governance and delivery of basic services.
Nthatisi said the high rates and taxes issue remained a focal point which residents and stakeholders raise constantly.
Responding on the event, Andre Snyman, DA councillor, said the disparity between Mangaung’s enormous investment potential and its dire governance became starkly evident at the indaba.
“While Mangaung is geographically positioned as a prime location for development, the leadership of the executive mayor, Gregory Nthatsi, has proven to be a significant obstacle for prospective investors.”
Snyman said the indaba revealed glaring shortcomings in the municipality’s approach. “Despite recognising challenges such as the country’s highest property tax rates, unaffordable land prices, and crumbling infrastructure, the metro’s leadership presented no actionable plan to resolve these issues. The lack of vision and failure to prioritise sustainable solutions erodes trust among investors and developers.”
Multiple stakeholders at the event highlighted the municipality’s failure to provide even basic services or maintain infrastructure. High taxes and service fees further deter potential investment, compounding the region’s economic stagnation.
“Meanwhile, Thekisho defended the excessive rates and taxes as essential for balancing the budget.
“Yet, as attendees pointed out, residents and businesses cannot bear the weight of these unreasonable levies, particularly in a metro marked by one of the highest levels of inequality globally.”
Paul Jackson, CEO of Trust for Urban Housing Finance (TUHF), underscored the main impediments
to investment, including:
) unaffordable property rates and service fees have risen disproportionately compared to average income increases; ) rampant corruption that stifles economic growth; and ) ineffective urban management,
marked by neglected infrastructure, unenforced by-laws, and poor financial practices.
Ntatisi said the time has come for government spheres and state entities to dispose of unused properties to potential buyers who have plans to revive such properties.
Oplossings vir water geëis

Inwoners van Bloemfontein is eenvoudig moedeloos oor krane wat sonder waarskuwing droog staan. Talle inwoners weet nie of hulle slegs ’n dun stroompie water of geen water gaan hê wanneer hulle in die oggend opstaan nie.
AfriForum se Bloemfontein-tak eis nou antwoorde van die Mangaungmetro nadat inwoners van Bloemfontein vir bykans ’n maand lank sonder voldoende watertoevoer was.
Bloemfonteiners se krane het teen Maandagmiddag 27 Januarie uiteindelik weer skoon drinkwater gehad nadat AfriForum die munisipaliteit vroeër dié dag op terme geplaas het weens die voortslepende waterkrisis.
Woensdagoggend was krane in hoogliggende dele steeds of weer leeg.
In ’n brief wat Maandag aan die Manguang-metro gestuur is, voer AfriForum aan dat inwoners in verskeie Bloemfonteinse woonbuurte en informele nedersettings die afgelope drie weke ’n gebrek aan water ervaar het.
Die onlangse reën het ook veroorsaak dat die nodige watersuiwering nie kon plaasvind
nie as gevolg van die slik en modder in die water.
AfriForum het daarop aangedring dat die sporadiese watertoevoer onmiddellik herstel word en geëis dat die munisipaliteit daadwerklik optree en volhoubare oplossings implementeer.
“Die metro moet eienaarskap van hul probleme vat en nie net korttermynoplossings toepas nie,” sê Christo Groenewald, distrikskoördineerder vir AfriForum in Bloemfontein.
“Dit is ook nie die eerste voorval waar probleme met die turbines, wat watersuiwering en die gereelde monitering van watervlakke ’n uitdaging maak, ondervind word nie. Onderhoud en opgraderings aan infrastruktuur moet gereeld plaasvind, wat uiteindelik probleme op die langtermyn aansienlik sal verminder.”
Die waterkrisis het ’n ernstige impak op inwoners se lewensgehalte, aangesien basiese higiëne en toegang tot skoon drinkwater in die gedrang is.
AfriForum dring aan dat die metro dringend optree om hierdie humanitêre krisis eens en vir altyd op te los en om hul grondwetlike verpligtinge teenoor inwoners na te kom.
Corize van Rensburg, DA-raadslid, het dié party se kommer uitgespreek oor die stand van sake wat betref water ná ’n verslag van die Menseregtekommissie (MRK) waarin die metro se mislukkings om water te verskaf en bestuur aangespreek is.
“Die munisipaliteit se onvermoë om te beplan en volhoubare oplossings te bied, is duidelik deur die afwesigheid van rugsteun reservoirs of ’n reserwewatervoorraad vir tye van nood en ontwrigting.”
Sy sê die metro maak alleenlik staat op die suiwering en verskaffing van watter vir onmiddellike gebruik, met geen voorsiening vir probleme nie.
Van die voorstelle wat die DA het om die probleme aan te spreek, sluit in die bou en onderhoud van reserwe reservoirs, die herstel en opgradering van die verouderde infrastruktuur, beter kommunikasie om inwoners in kennis te stel oor watertekorte, tydlyne en inligting oor die plekke waar tenks is.
Hulle vra dat amptenare wat verantwoordelik is vir wanbestuur verantwoordbaar gehou word en dat ’n goed-deurdagte waterbestuursplan opgestel word om toekomstige watersekerheid oor die metro se waterhulpbronne te verseker.

It is alleged that between 27 March 2020 and 29 June 2021, Macdonald, who is the owner of the company Radius Sales Merchandising, lodged an application for
An internal investigation was conducted and it was established that three people whose names appeared on the fund application were Lesotho nationals, who were in South Africa illegally.

Die eerste van twee groot operasies wat die dapper Bloemfonteinertjie Janique Venter (7) in Memphis, Tennessee, ondergaan het, was ’n groot sukses.
Talle liefdadigheidsorganisasies oor die Vrystaat en Noord-Kaap heen kry binnekort ’n hupstoot danksy ’n uitbetaling van die Kersfonds.
Die toedeling van die R300 000 wat vanjaar uitbetaal word, is Dinsdag 21 Januarie op ’n vergadering gemaak.
Ds. Jannie Smith, voorsitter van die Kersfonds, het sy dank uitgespreek teenoor elke individu, onderneming en kerk wat ’n bydra tot die fonds gemaak het.
Bykomend tot die skenkings wat aan die fonds gemaak word om te help om die nood te verlig, bied ’n groepie vrywilligers gereeld ’n veiling aan waarvan ’n deel van die opbrengs aan die fonds geskenk word.
Die laaste veiling is Vrydag aangebied waarin die huisinhoud van ’n huis in die Aliquandoaftreeoord in Heuwelsig onder die hamer gekom het.
Betsie Roux, komiteelid van die Kersfonds wat ook leiding neem met die Kersfondsveilings, sê nog ’n soortgelyke veiling word binnekort aangebied.
Niewinsgewende organisasies wat hulle op hulpverlening toespits en aan ’n sekere stel kriteria voldoen, kan om ’n bedrag aansoek doen en sê waarvoor die geld aangewend gaan word.
Vanjaar gaan organisasies soos Torings van Hoop; Solidariteit Helpende Hand; die Vereniging vir Blindes, Vrystaat; Salineni Dagsorgsentrum in Bethlehem; Genade in Aksie; CHOC Huis; Aurora; Ancher of Hope; die Vereniging vir Mense met Gestremdhede in die Vrystaat; Vrystaat-Nasorgsentrum; Child Welfare en Childline Free State; Engo Gesinsorg; Engo-jeugsorgsentrums en verskeie kerklike maatskaplike dienste in die platteland; asook die Hilda Gonda Hulpfonds vir Bejaardes deel in die fonds se uitbetalings.
Inbetalings vir vanjaar se insameling begin nou.
Ondernemings kan ook ’n belastingsertifikaat vir skenkings aan die Kersfonds ontvang. Die rekeningbesonderhede is: VolksbladKersfonds, Nedbankrekening 102891-9980, takkode 117-134.
Janique is op ses maande met neuroblastoom gediagnoseer, ’n kwaadaardige gewas aan die regterkant van haar nek. Twee jaar gelede het dokters bevestig dat die gewas na ’n nie-kwaadaardige ganglioneuroom verander het, maar dit het steeds druk op haar lugpyp veroorsaak.
Daarom was dit kort ná haar tweede verjaardag nodig om ’n traggie te kry om haar te help asemhaal.
Ná maande van hoop en onsekerheid het Janique se ouers, Nadine Mukheibir en Jacques Venter, in Desember die blye nuus ontvang dat ’n span dokters in Memphis bereid is om die gewas te verwyder. Die gesin het vinnig visums en toepaslike dokumente bekom en daarna na Amerika gereis vir toetse en voorbereiding.
Venter het op Dinsdagaand 28 Januarie aan BloemNuus gesê dat die eerste operasie suksesvol was en dat hulle baie dankbaar is.
“Sy het die afgelope week daagliks doktersafsprake gehad,” verduidelik hy.
In die eerste operasie Dinsdag het chirurge Janique se regterslagaar afgesluit. Die groep spesialiste het bevind dat haar linkerslagaar voortaan genoeg bloed aan haar brein sal kan verskaf.

Breiprojek begin

Dewald het bevestig dat ’n deel van hierdie geld gebruik is om die gesin na Amerika te laat reis. Daarbenewens het die
gemeenskap ook geld vir Janique se trustfonds geskenk.

Rich tones honoured
The Marcussen organ in the Kopanong Auditorium (Kovsie Church) that was recently restored, will serve as the centrepiece of a week-long organ festival.
The fifth Odeion School of Music (OSM) Liesbeth Schlumberger Organ Chair will coinside with the reinauguration of the organ at the University of the Free State (UFS).
This Marcussen organ is one of only two such instruments in South Africa. One resides in the Endler Hall at the Stellenbosch University’s Department of Music; the other in the Kopanong Auditorium, was installed in 1986.

The UFS commissioned the restoration serivices of the esteemed organ builders Jan and Marinus Elsenaar of Protea Organ Builders.
Restoring the UFS’ Marcussen Organ to its former glory had been a dream of Dr Jan Beukes, artistic and operational head of the OSM, organ lecturer, and curator of the Marcussen organ.
The OSM Liesbeth Schlumberger organ festival was founded in 2015 by the OSM’s innovation manager,
Liesbeth Schlumberger will play at the fifth Liesbeth Schlumberger Organ Chair from 30 January in Bloemfontein.

Marius Coetzee, and is presented bi-annually. The number of students studying the organ has declined significantly in South Africa in the past two decades. The men’s rugby side of the University of the Free State (UFS), the Shimlas, will begin its quest to defend the Varsity Cup title with a tough match against the side’s arch-rival, the Stellenbosch University’s Maties.
The fixture is set for Monday, 17 February, in this competition featuring eight South African university teams.
The Shimlas won the coveted trophy after beating the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Ikeys 45 – 42 in the final played in the packed-to-capacity Shimla Park Stadium in Bloemfontein on 22 April last year.
The reigning champions have won the title two times thus far, with the first time being in 2015.
The Maties won the competition in 2008, 2010, 2018 and 2019, while the University of Pretoria (UP) won it in 2012, 2013, 2017, and then back-to-back in 2021 and 2022.
André Tredoux, head coach for the Shimlas, said his charges were geared for the gruelling battle, adding he was keeping the team focused.
“Winning the trophy in 2024 was very rewarding after the hard work and effort the team put into the campaign.
“The students celebrated well; with a successful team many players got opportunities to go on and play professional rugby. We also had a high number of graduates,” said Tredoux.
“The year 2025 is a new challenge, and we will stay true to our brand to play attractive running rugby. The team has been preparing well and the players are excited to give everything in the upcoming campaign.
“We will play without fear and embrace the challenge.”
The Shimlas will be striving to win the title in back-to-back victories.
In their quest to bring cup glory to the Free State once more, the UFS men have the backing of fellow locals, the Ixias of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State.
The Ixias will start their campaign with an away game against the University of Johannesburg (UJ). The Ixias managed to remain in the top division after winning the play-offs.
The local derby fixture between the Shimlas and Ixias will be played on Monday, 17 March
