E. Coli crisis in Allanridge

Marti Will marti.will@media24.com

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will urgently petition the Matjhabeng Local Municipality and environmental agencies to prioritise the immediate refurbishment of sewer pump stations and repair the dilapidated water infrastructure in Allanridge.

This aims to address the escalating sewage crisis that has resulted in E. coli contamination of the Allanridge water reservoir, threatening public health and safety.

Despite repeated warnings, letters, and televised broadcasts led by DA Councillor Jessica Nel, the Matjhabeng Municipality has failed to act.

The DA highlighted the crisis in 2023, but no action has been taken. It culminated in a munici-

pal notice on 10 January, confirming E. coli contamination in the water storage facility supplying Allanridge.

As a temporary solution, the Vaal Central Water Board has isolated the affected facility and redirected the water supply through an alternative line.

The contamination stems from extensive leaks in the water infrastructure. Persistent low water pressure caused by ageing and damaged pipelines has enabled sewage infiltration, further exacerbated by the collapse of functioning sewage treatment systems.

For years, Allanridge and Nyakallong residents have raised concerns about the murky, foulsmelling water, which has now become a confirmed health hazard.

This neglect puts the

community at significant risk. E. coli infections can cause severe symptoms, including watery or bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and fever. Vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly are particularly at risk.

The environmental impact of sewage-filled dams and contaminated water bodies further threatens the area’s long-term sustainability.

The DA calls for swift, decisive action from the municipality. This includes prioritising the repair of sewer pump stations, conducting thorough water quality testing, and developing a transparent timeline for infrastructure restoration. Failure to address these issues will deepen the crisis, endangering residents’ health and worsening the environmental damage.

FS welcomes 85 babies on New Years Day

Marti Will marti.will@media24.com

There were 23 babies born in the Lejweleputswa district on New Year’s Day.

The first day of 2025 saw maternity wards at health facilities of the Free State Department of Health delivering 85 babies in total, of which 52 were girls, and 33 were boys.

Altogether 13 babies each were born at Bongani Regional Hospital in Welkom and the Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in Bloemfontein.

There were 14 babies born to mothers between the ages of 16 and 19.

The first baby was born at the Albert Nzula District Hospital in Trompsburg. Retshiditswe Lawerloot (22), gave birth to her daughter at 00:01.

The last baby on New Year’s day, a girl, was born to Gloria Masokela from Winburg at the Winburg District Hospital, Lejweleputswa district. She was born at 23:30.

Elke de Witt, acting spokesperson for Free State Department of Health says they would like to remind all new mothers about the importance of exclusively breastfeeding their babies for at least the first six months and to ensure that the babies get the necessary immunisations from birth.

The Road-to-health-booklet, previously known as Clinic Card, is an important record to keep track of the child’s immunisation, which shows doctors and nurses your child growth,” says De Witt.

On Christmas day in the Free State, 79 babies (37 girls and 41 boys) were born.

Twins (boy and girl) were born to Lire Lebohang from Ladybrand at 13:24 and 13:27 at Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital.

Ten babies were born at Bongani Regional Hospital in Welkom and the Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in Bloemfontein.

In total there were 14 babies born on Christmas day in the Lejweleputswa district.

God leads us to fulfilment, while dreams light the way

During the December holiday I revisited a really old movie that I had watched when I was about 7 years old, called South Pacific

There is a song in the movie that has these lyrics: “You’ve got to have a dream, if you don’t have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true.”

Hope for the Hope for the week week

enly Father is committed to helping us fulfil it. What we often need is a heavenly perspective to remind us to keep going, and the story of Joseph’s life gives us that eternal perspective.

As we head into 2025, I want to encourage you to pick up the dreams that you might have shelved way back. Often when life happens we get disillusioned with our vision or ourselves, but the good news is that God does not get disillusioned with us, because He never had any illusions about us to begin with. The design and purpose for our lives was dreamed up and written even before the foundations of the earth, and our good and perfect Heav-

Read the story of Joseph’s life from Genesis 39 onwards and be inspired.

Joseph’s purpose starts and is highlighted by the fact that God initiates the desires in his life. Joseph’s dream is an indicator of God’s voice speaking his purpose into being. Have you recognised how God is speaking and leading you? He speaks in many ways, like visions and dreams, scripture and inner convictions that line up with

His will, and we must learn to recognise it. Secondly, when God speaks to us it initiates a response from us, and we are now invited into a relationship of seeking and understanding. If we were robots, God could just instruct us as our GPS does, but He desires that we trust him in the journey. The right questions would be, “What does this mean and what must I do.” Lean into God and discover the treasures that He has hidden for us.

As Joseph’s journey continues, he encounters the challenges that can cause most to lose heart and give up. There will always be resistance from people and distractions to cause us to take our eyes off of the prize. If we can remember God’s goodness and faithfulness through the storms, we will

be internally motivated to stay the course.

And the last phase of Joseph’s journey is Divine Clarity. Ultimately Joseph remains faithful and gets to see God’s fulfilment of his dream when he gets placed in charge to administrate Pharaoh’s kingdom.

His response to Pharaoh and his brothers shows the very reason for his dreams. He acknowledges God as the One who lead him through it all so that he might accomplish God’s will.

God is sure of the plans for our lives. He has good plans to prosper us and give us hope that we may have great joy and fulfilment. Our response in 2025 should be: “Yes Lord. For Your glory and kingdom to come.”

Police official arrested again

Marti Will marti.will@media24.com

A 41-year-old police sergeant attached to the Anti-gang unit and his female accomplice (32) have been charged with alleged possession of drugs. They were re-arrested by the Welkom Serious Organised Crime Investigation detectives on 19 December and were expected to appear in court on Wednesday, 15 January.

On 11 May 2023, the Hawks executed a search warrant at the sergeant’s place of residence in Hennenman.

He was found in the company of a woman. Upon searching, 14 Mandrax tablets were found. Both suspects were then arrested, but released pending a forensic report.

The acting head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in the Free State, Brig. Sophie Hange, says the arrest is evidence that the wheels of justice, although sometimes slow, are always in motion.

“Despite the delay, justice will prevail. Communities must understand that releasing an arrested suspect does not mean the end. No one will be spared.”

Storm ontwortel dorp

Marti Will marti.will@media24.com

In association with the Louzanne Coetzee Foundation & Bloemfontein Striders

Foto: Verskaf

Marti Will marti.will@media24.com

enige ernstige beserings of sterftes was nie.”

“As God vir jou is wie kan teen jou wees ons geloof moet so groot wees soos’n mostert saadjie,” skryf Cecile Woite.

Damage in storm’s wake extensive

The second tornado in Welkom’s history struck terror in the hearts of residents on 5 January. Several businesses and institutions suffered extensive damage, including the Matjhabeng municipality’s fire station in Volksweg, where the roof was ripped off and the vast glass doors were shattered.

Severe damage was reported at the Lejweleputswa disaster management centre, the Unitas Secondary School and THS Welkom. The businesses and institutions affected have reported millions of rands damage.

Francois Klaassen, assistant fire chief, says the tornado hit the fire station around 12:40.

roof was blown off and the doors were ripped out.”

The estimated damage to the fire station is between R10 million and R15 million.

“It was built in 1968. The roof will have to be replaced and the electrical wiring redone.”

René Steyn, DA ward councillor, says wards 32 and 27 were hit the hardest. There was extensive damage to factories and businesses in the industrial area, and there were power outages in places. Steyn says they contacted the Office of the Premier so that provincial disaster management could assist, as the municipality’ emergency services were also affected.

The South African Weather Services says this aligns with an EF1 tornado. Single-cell thunderstorms are typically associated with weak tornadoes, often referred to as landspouts. These tornadoes are short-lived, usually lasting only a brief period, and typically cause minor to moderate damage.
