Donation equips Thabong CPF members with bicycles
Marti Wil marti.will@media24.com
The Thabong CPF has received a donation of 20 bicycles and other crucial equipment to bolster crime prevention.
Thabong SAPS Social Crime Prevention, in collaboration with the Community Policing Forum (CPF), as well as a representative of the Coca-Cola Company, Spiritual Crime Prevention, Lejweleputswa District Chairperson, the Matjhabeng Traffic Department, and a Provincial representative, gathered for the handover of essential equipment to Thabong CPF members.
The CPF received 20 bicycles, 20 helmets, 30 reflector jackets, 20 whistles and 20 torches.
“These bicycles will greatly
enhance the CPF members’ ability to respond swiftly to incidents, allowing them to reach crime scenes faster and patrol their communities more efficiently,” says Capt. Loraine Earle, Free State SAPS media and liaison officer.
“This initiative will improve visibility and effectiveness in security patrols, ultimately strengthening community safety.
“With access to bicycles, CPF members can travel further and patrol more extensively, supporting the police in the fight against crime.
“Through partnerships like this, the transformative impact of bicycle patrols becomes evident, demonstrating promising results in crime prevention.”
Following the handover
ceremony, CPF members cycled to Boitumelo Mall to showcase their new equipment. During this action, the Thabong Mobile CSC was stationed at the mall to assist the community with certification and affidavits, ensuring convenient access to essential services.
Earle says the CPF members expressed deep gratitude for the generous sponsorship, acknowledging the thoughtfulness behind the donation. Further community support was demonstrated by tuckshop owners, who provided water and cold drinks for the event.
“This initiative underscores the power of collaboration in enhancing safety and security, making a tangible difference in the lives of Thabong residents.”

Iconic landmark saved thanks to public
Thousands of rands’ worth of damage was caused when a would-be thief climbed the iconic Tree of Memories at Rose House in Montague Road, Bedelia, and stripped the tree of a cable to which more than 1 000 memorial lights were attached.
Disaster struck on Saturday, 15 February, when the man was caught red-handed on the hospice premises, where he was busy stripping the tree of the electrical cable on which the memorial bulbs are attached.
The suspect struck at about 06:37, and an alert was immediately received on the

Bedelia Police Forum regarding a suspect caught in the act of stealing.
“Thanks to the vigilance and swift action of community members, the suspect was apprehended on the scene. A special thank you goes out to the residents involved, as well as the quick response from Shepherd Alarms and members of the police, who ensured the suspect was successfully taken into custody,” says Ray Goodsell, chairman of the Goldfields Hospice Association.
He expressed his gratitude for the community’s efforts in preventing further loss and damage.

This incident highlights the crucial role the community plays in supporting the community policing forum (CPF), police, and security companies by serving as the eyes and ears in the fight against crime. We encourage continued cooperation to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
Since its inception in 1991, the Goldfields Hospice’s Tree of Memories has become a landmark in the festive season, synonymous with goodwill and the raising of much needed funds for their community work.
Goodsell says they would

appreciate any assistance possible from the community to have the Tree of Memories returned to its former glory.
This tree, at 60 m, is considered the tallest living Christmas tree in the Free State. The idea behind the tree is to decorate it with lights bought in lieu of loved ones lost to terminal diseases.
The project serves as an additional source of income to supplement costs at the hospice.
The ideal way of ending a busy year and starting the festive season is to enjoy the switching on of their Christmas lights.

At more than 60 m, the iconic Tree of Memories situated at 58 Montague Road, Bedelia, is considered to be the tallest living Christmas Tree in the Free State.

Water crisis addressed
Marti Will marti.will@media24.com
The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has resolved to immediately adopt measures to address persistent water leaks and related infrastructure challenges.
During the council meeting held on Tuesday, 18 February, Cllr René Steyn put a proposal before council concerning this issue.

She said water leaks are a significant contributor to the worsening water crisis in Matjhabeng.

“Without immediate and sustained intervention, the situation will deteriorate further, deepening hardships for residents.

It is imperative that council adopts this motion to ensure that water infrastructure is preserved and residents’ basic needs are met,” said Steyn.
“We need answers on who should be held accountable.”
On this point, Cllr Manie Pretorious of the FF Plus asked about water shedding, the reasons for the action, who authorised it, and when will water shedding be lifted.
“I also asked about the brown water that has a bad odour, I rejected their previous explanations.

“I want to know who must take responsibility for this situation, and what the remedial actions are to rectify it.
“I again referred to and asked about the E. Coli in Allanridge.”
Pretorius stated his concerns were not answered.
The water crisis motion was carried.
All matters will be referred to the Water Crisis Adhoc Committee for oversight and additional recommendations to ensure effective implementation.
There was an added recommendation that Supply Chain Management has the responsibility to build capacity within the Department of Infrastructure to enable them to fulfil council’s resolution.
This addition was accepted and motion was passed.

Suspect arrested for murder charge

A joint operation between the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit and members from Reddersburg SAPS has led to the successful arrest of a suspect wanted for murder.
On Friday, 14 February, members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit were conducting crime-combating duties in Thabong when they responded to a murder scene in the Katleho Section of this township Thabong. Preliminary reports indicated that a known suspect had allegedly stabbed

Tshediso Ishmael Mosenohi (47) multiple times in the neck after an argument, resulting in the victim’s death at the scene. The suspect fled the scene.
As members of the AntiGang Unit concluded their shift on Saturday, 15 February 2025 they relayed critical information regarding the suspect to the next shift.
The team immediately activated their informants, who later confirmed that the suspect had fled to Reddersburg, near Bloemfontein.
On Sunday, 16 February at around 14:00, members of the

Welkom Anti-Gang Unit received confirmation of the suspect’s exact location in Reddersburg. With the necessary authority, the team departed to Reddersburg. Upon arrival, an off-duty Reddersburg CSC member confirmed that the suspect was in a vehicle travelling from Matoporong to the Reddersburg CBD.
Working in collaboration with on-duty Reddersburg CSC members, the team successfully intercepted the vehicle and found the suspect inside. He was immediately arrested for murder.

Lig agter ’n sluier weg?
) Ds. Domonic Basson is van die NG kerk St Helena.

Enjoy Valentine’s atmosphere
The Welkom People’s Valentine Market held on 8 February was a huge success. The permanent home of this popular market is the Welkom Technical High School (THS) sports grounds. Exhibitors feel this venue is safe and secure, and here they can offer flea market visitors the best experience. Also, this venue has safe, clean ablution facilities. Exciting changes are in the pipeline. Dulcie Harris, flea market convenor, says the layout will be changed to make it more compact and user friendly. They also want to incorporate a farmer’s market and more children’s entertainment, as well as exciting exhibitions, in future. The Welkom People’s Autumn Market is planned for 8 March.
Cosatu rejects plans to reinstate Khalipha
Costau, Free State:
Cosatu has learned with profound indignation and moral outrage of plans by the ANC’s provincial leadership and compromised officials to reinstate the disgraced former Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Thanduxolo Khalipha, and to unlawfully reward him with six months’ retrospective salary – a grotesque insult to the workers and the residents in Matjhabeng.
This is a flagrant violation of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), which explicitly prohibits the misuse of public funds to compensate individuals for work not performed.
Cosatu is of the firm view that any council member, official, or political actor who facilitates this reinstatement or approves these payments will be complicit in the unconscionable theft of municipal resources, diverting critical funds meant for service delivery, infrastructure, and workers’ wages to enrich a man whose legacy is one of corruption, violence, and betrayal.
disappearance of municipal firearms – a scandal that raises grave concerns about public safety, covert operations, and the potential militarisation of local governance. Who authorised this unit, financed it, and for what purpose was it created? The people of Matjhabeng demand answers, not the ANC’s deafening silence.
Khalipha’s defiance of democratic norms disqualifies him from office. He ignored directives from the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee to step aside. Instead he illegally appointing an acting mayor in violation of Section 56 of the Municipal Structures Act.
cion from ANC provincial officials. These actions undermine democratic governance, erode municipal accountability, and foster a culture of impunity that threatens to annihilate the very foundation of local government in the Free State.
Samwu’s three-month legal strike laid bare the rot festering under Khalipha’s rule. Workers raised legitimate grievances over fraudulent tenders, unpaid wages, and collapsing services, only to be met with disdain from ANC leaders who prioritised protecting Khalipha over addressing their suffering. During the strike, Cogta was called upon to appoint investigators to probe the procurement of the second-hand fleet that crippled the municipality financially.
To date, the investigative team has failed to provide clarity or accountability. Why has justice been deferred?

His reinstatement will not only reward criminality, but deepen the crisis in the municipality. His tenure was a masterclass in abuse of power, marked by his conviction for assaulting his own bodyguards – a crime that laid bare his contempt for human dignity and the rule of law. Under his leadership, the municipality’s finances were gutted through reckless decisions like the procurement of a defunct secondhand vehicle fleet. Millions of rands were squandered while leaving residents without basic services. Then there are the unresolved allegations of a clandestine “rogue unit” allegedly established under his authority, alongside the
Now, ANC provincial leaders seek to not only reinstate him but also retroactively legitimise his six-month absence, demanding the unlawful restoration of his salary, bodyguards, and mayoral privileges. This shameless political interference undermines a lawful council resolution and insults workers who endured months of unpaid wages during the union’s legal strike in 2024.
The ANC’s complicity extends to its deliberate failure to act on the findings of the Cogta appointed investigative team tasked with probing the municipality’s collapse. To date, this investigation remains shrouded in secrecy, shielding those responsible for the looting of public funds.
Meanwhile, the Matjhabeng Council’s principled resistance to outsourcing its powers – by appointing its own acting mayor and rejecting Khalipha’s illegitimate authority – has been met with threats and coer-
Cosatu applauds the Free State Provincial Exco for invoking Section 139 of the Constitution to implement a Financial Recovery Plan – a critical step toward rescuing Matjhabeng. Reinstating Khalipha will sabotage this intervention, entrenching the very corruption and mismanagement that necessitated it. It would signal that political loyalty trumps accountability, justice, and the needs of ordinary citizens. Allowing this reinstatement to proceed would not only compromise the integrity of governance in Matjhabeng but set a dangerous precedent for municipalities nationwide, effectively granting corrupt officials a blank cheque to act with impunity.
We issue an unequivocal warning: Should the ANC proceed with this reckless reinstatement, Cosatu and
Samwu will mobilise the masses. We will demand immediate payment of workers’ unpaid strike wages. Our members, who have borne the brunt of Khalipha’s misrule, will not stand idly by as political elites divert resources meant for service delivery to line the pockets of those who orchestrated this municipality’s collapse. To the ANC: This is a moment of moral reckoning. You stand at a crossroads: you must choose accountability over complicity, and justice over corruption. Stand with the workers and residents of Matjhabeng – not with a man who has robbed them. Reject the tyranny of political patronage and uphold the rule of law. Governance built on impunity is no governance at all. If you fail to act in the best interests of the community, prepare for an unprecedented wave of resistance. To reinstate Khalipha is to institutionalise theft, and to pay him for six months of dereliction is to spit in the face of justice. The people of Matjhabeng will not tolerate this betrayal.
This is not merely a political battle – it is a fight for the soul of Matjhabeng. It is about the livelihoods of workers.
It is about the delivery of essential services to communities drowning in neglect. It is about the preservation of democratic governance itself. Cosatu and its affiliate Samwu will not relent. We will fight tirelessly, using every tool at our disposal, until justice prevails. Together, we will ensure that those who have failed the people of Matjhabeng are held accountable. Together, we will restore dignity to this municipality. – Issued by Cosatu Free State Province

Park tenders raise eyebrows
Muzi Khumalo, Welkom:
There are big questions about the Matjhabeng Industrial Park tender. Were there any adverts calling for service providers on this project? How were they appointed?
It is even worse to hear that the spokesperson of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality has been appointed as a board member.
How did it come to be that the spokesperson became the Lejweleputswa Development Agency (LDA) board member? Can the community be enlightened on the process?
The involvement of the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, LDA, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Local Economic Development (LED) plan of Matjhabeng, and offices of executive mayors of both municipalities is a subject for
noting. We know this project was started by former executive mayor Nkosinjani Speelman, and the buildings are testimony of that fact. This appointment was done by the current administration.
People are suffering, and the high employment rate is affecting service delivery.
Is there any possibility that these service providers are closely linked to those in higher offices in both district and local municipalities, either by birth, marriage, family members, association, etc.?
The community deserves to know.
It seems that the Lejweleputswa
District Municipality is not in charge. The walls of Jericho is falling down, and the district is nowhere to be found.
The district has never bothered to care anyway.
How do we expect them to care, especially now that Matjhabeng is under section 139? Where do we go from here. The Matjhabeng Industrial Park project is spearhead by officials, not by councilors.
There is no council resolution regarding this project in both Lejweleputswa District and Matjhabeng local municipality, and unavailability of LDA board minutes. Councilors have been left in limbo. An official responsible to allocate empty offices has been in China since 2024.
Is this what we voted for, and how we will be voting?

Crackdown on illicit mining
Marti Will marti.will@media24.com
Nine illegal immigrants were caught processing illegal gold at Beatrix Gold Mine and in Thabong during a collaborative effort between the SAPS and private security companies.
The aim of the operation was to eradicate illicit mining activities.
Two foreign national males were arrested at Beatrix Mine and a case docket of trespassing on mine area, attempted theft of State minerals: illegal mining, the contravention of Mine Health and Safety Act and Contravention of Immigration Act was opened at Theunissen Police Station. The arrests ar Beatrix were done after the underground illegal miners resurfaced and were arrested at Beatrix 1.
“The suspects revealed to the team that they went underground illegally during April 2024,” says Lt. Col Thabo Covane, media liaison officer for provincial SAPS.
He says elsewhere various operational
concepts were carried out by Operation Vala uMgodi to thwart the illicit mining threat. Foot, vehicle as well as air-to-ground patrols were conducted at Beatrix Old Mine Shaft 4, Reahola Hostel (Welkom), Thabong, Phomolong Informal Settlement and bush areas near Sewage plant in Odendaalsrus. Seven African males were found busy with illegal mining activities and were immediately arrested.
Gold bearing material weighing at 49.11 kilograms; gold processing equipment such as lePhenduka, a water pump generator and hose pipe, stumper and pot, garden spades, shovels and steel balls and chains thrown (that are thrown into the Phenduka to facilitate separation process) were seized. Case dockets of Possession of suspected gold bearing material; gold processing equipment with additional charge of trespassing on mine area and Contravention of Immigration Act were opened at Thabong, Theunissen, Welkom and Odendaalsrus Police Stations.
