The putrid and foul water that is coming out of the taps of homes in Welkom is infuriating residents, who are already past boiling point having to endure days on end of dry taps with no plausible explanations forthcoming.
Tshediso Tlali, spokesperson for the Matjhabeng Municipality, says the brown-coloured water observed in certain areas of Matjhabeng was solely due to a discolouration issue, which is now under control.
“Municipal teams respond to the reported complaints immediately, and the issue is continuously monitored to ensure early detection and resolution of any water quality concerns.”
But, says Coreen Malherbe, DA caucus leader in Matjhabeng, they are deeply concerned about the quality of the water.
“We are in the process of having it tested to make sure it is safe for human consumption.”
For the time being, residents are advised to boil their drinking water, and get water filters and water softeners for their homes.
“The persistent water problems regarding no water pressure and nearly no water in certain areas in Welkom have been reported to the DA in the Free State Provincial Legislature in Bloemfontein for urgent intervention,” says Malherbe.
“Numerous unanswered calls to the director of infrastructure in Matjhabeng left residents without water for days.”
The water leaks across Matjhabeng are compounding
the ongoing water crisis.
“Despite the community’s struggles with unreliable and potentially unsafe water, the municipality has failed to address these leaks with the urgency and seriousness the situation demands.
“Water leaks that have been reported remain unattended for
days and even weeks, resulting in the loss of thousands of liters of water. This delay in repairs not only exacerbates the current water crisis, but also causes damage to roads and infrastructure, with unfilled trenches creating additional hazards for residents. Prolonged water shortages threaten residents’ health, increase living costs, and erode trust in governance,” says Malherbe.
Stephan Pienaar of the FF Plus says they have demanded that the acting municipal manager, Thabo Panyane, immediately investigate the quality and safety of the residential water.
“Many residents have complained about the water’s brown colour and unpleasant smell. We doubt the municipality’s explanation that the problem is due to burst pipes that have been repaired, allowing soil to enter the water supply system,” says Pienaar.
He says the municipality claims water samples have already been sent for testing, but no results have so far been disclosed to the council or the public.
“We are also concerned about recent warnings of E. Coli in the Allanridge water system. It is important that the water crisis committee established in 2024 start doing its job and hold officials responsible for the poor quality of water in Matjhabeng,” he says.
Tlali insists that all areas that form of the water supply system, have daily access to drinking water.
“Interruptions occur only during planned maintenance, scheduled shutdowns or unforeseen incidents.”
Perpetuates disgust
residents of K2 in Kutloanong
are among the
of people in Matjhabeng who are forced to live in environments being flooded by raw sewage on a daily basis. Severe health hazards exist in Virginia, Meloding, Odendaalsrus, Allanridge and Welkom. In 2024, three young lives were claimed by drowning in sewer pits. In most instances the sewer problems are decades old. In Glen Harmony and Conera, Virginia, residents are surrounded by sewage. In the instance of Conera, a sewage “lake” is developing. At a home in Jansen Street, Welkom, thehomeownerhashadtolivewithasewage-floodedyard since November 2024. During a horrific kidnapping incident in Meloding, a man was violently overpowered by his assailants in addition to being badly assaulted and threatened with death.
Three suspects were since arrested for kidnapping and attempted murder after the Meloding police rescued the victim, owing to a swift and coordinated response.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 26 January, at approximately 15:00 when the victim was abducted and allegedly brutally assaulted by four suspects.
He is currently recovering from his injuries at the Katleho Hospital in Virginia.
The victim stated he was at a car wash in Meloding, waiting for his takeaway, when four men approached him, claiming to be looking for him.
The suspects forcefully dragged him to a vehicle and severely assaulted him with knobkerries. He was also strangled with a rope, stabbed with a butcher
knife, and threatened with a firearm.
The victim lost consciousness during the attack and later awoke at a remote farm, where the assault continued.
The suspects allegedly threatened to kill him, tie him to a stone, and dispose of his body in the Tikwe River.
As the suspects began advancing towards the river, a police patrol vehicle intervened, saving the victim and foiling the suspects’ plans.
The police were informed of the incident by the victim’s girlfriend, which led to their swift response.
In a joint operation between Crime Intelligence and members of the Community Service Centre (CSC), they located the suspects and victim at a farm outside Meloding. Three suspects, aged between 32 and 42 years, were arrested at the scene. Police also recovered a pellet gun resembling a firearm, a butcher knife, bloody clothing, and a rope.
Past crimes result in harsh sentencing
Marti Will marti.will@media24.com
A man (36) has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for rape.
Tshepo Duncan Ncheche was sentenced in the Welkom Regional Court on Friday, 24 January. This follows an incident on Sunday, 4 August 2019, when he accosted and raped a then 24-year-old female
victim in Thabong.
Ncheche was arrested on 24 August 2019. The investigation was led by Sgt Themba Jilimba of the Thabong Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit.
Ncheche was found guilty on one count of rape, one count of kidnapping, and guilty of the pointing of an object likely to lead a person to believe it is a firearm.

On the first day of school, a comprehensive Back to School Awareness campaign was launched at different schools in Lejweleputswa.
The initiative was launched on 14 January with a walk-through campaign that aimed to provide workplace exposure for the Youth Desk and Junior Commissioners.
The day was attended by the provincial junior commissioners, partnership policing members, school safety officers, station commanders, and the Community Police Forum (CPF). The initiative took place over two days.
Visits were conducted to the various units within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Presentations were done by the Welkom Flying Squad, Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), Welkom K9 unit,Thabong Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, and Thabong Community Service Centre (CSC) in relation to their fields of expertise.
The second part was set in motion on Wednesday, 15 January, with visits to various schools, including the Harmony High School (Virginia), Ventersburg Intermediate School, Wessel Maree High School (Odendaalsrus), and Winburg Combined School in the Lejweleputswa District.
The objective was to address learners about challenges they face at schools and within their communities, with emphasis on the dangers of bullying, substance abuse, and gangsterism.
The youth desk coordinators outlined youth crime prevention strategies and motivated learners to focus on school and avoid any involvement in criminal activities. Schools should be regarded

Province given a moment in the sun
Lemmy L. Mule, author and publisher, Welkom:
The psychological influence of the 2024 matric class results indicates a readiness to participate in a system of transformative education, as adopted by the Parliamentary Basic Education Committee.
Indeed, quality education outcomes make participants what it wants them to become at an early age, as is applied in some developed countries.
These are the results of a creative merging of the four historical departments of education a while back.
South Africa is a country of continuous miracles in every respect.
Plea for a solution
Mpho Godfrey Motsemme, resident of Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus:
I am an independent community activist attempting to bring the plight of this community to the fore.
It is close to a decade that the residents of K2 Kutlwanong are living in a health hazardous situation.
My passionate love of education left me with no option but to express unreserved congratulations to the 2024 matriculants.
In particular, the top three provinces as led by none other than the consistent champion of champions: the Free State.
These are the perfect results of the public-private partnership as defined in the 2030 Presidential National
Development Plan.
The departmental leadership, teachers, and technocrats deserve unreserved congratulations for a continual national championship.
Once more, learners themselves made the Free State proud for setting the highest ever discipline towards a transformative socioeconomic education and decisive leadership powered by acquired intellectual leadership, intelligence for generations beyond horizons.
You made the Free State.
The standard set and consistently measured is achievable. Once more, well done and keep it up. We are proud to be a winning province.
Stricter governance a necessity
Muzi Khumalo, Welkom:
I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding the ongoing issues in St Helena.
This relates to the occurrence of unauthorised building activities and the improper disposal of construction materials.
The scattered materials are obstructing sidewalks and streets, making it difficult for pedestrians and vehicles to navigate the area safety.
Moreover, the lack of proper permits for renovations raises questions about compliance with building codes, which could lead to future structural or safety problems.

So far three councillors have come to inspect the sites, yet it made no difference.
The matter has been reported over the years to both the sewage and sanitation departments of both the local Odendaalsrus unit and to Welkom.
We, the community of Kutlwanong, are pleading for a solution to our plight, so as to bring about change.
Specifically, I have noticed that building materials are being left scattered throughout the streets, creating safety hazards and an unsightly environment.
Additionally, multiple properties in the area appear to be undergoing renovations or construction without the necessary permits.
These activities are causing significant disruption and concern among the residents, as they not only violate local ordinances but also pose potential risks to the safety and well-being of the community.
I respectfully request that the municipal building department investigate these matters and take appropriate action to ensure that construction and renovation activities are conducted in accordance with local regulations, and that building materials are properly stored and disposed of.
Garages are now being converted into renting rooms.
I hope the authorities will take the necessary steps to resolve this matter promptly, and ensure a safer and more orderly environment for all residents.

Years of municipal neglect has left residents of Odendaalsrus to endure a deteriorating infrastructure, including a major water leak and recurring sewerage overflows, with devastating consequences for the entire town.
Estelle Dansey, DA ward councillor, says they demand action to end service delivery failures in this town.
“We will take immediate steps to hold the Matjhabeng Local Municipality accountable for not resolving the appalling service delivery issues plaguing Odendaalsrus.”
She says for over six months, residents have reported the water leakage at the old Pick ’n Pay circle and the recurring sewerage overflow on Voortrekker Avenue.
“Yet the municipality has failed to act. These unresolved issues impact the entire community, threatening public health and safety,” says Dansey.
The water leak at the Pick ’n Pay circle has been attributed to delays in paying contractor quotes stuck in the municipality’s supply chain processes.
Dansey has repeatedly warned that the road at this critical entrance to Odendaalsrus is on the verge of collapse, endangering all road users and further isolating the town.
“The persistent sewerage overflow on Voortrekker Avenue stems from debris allegedly originating from

Correctional Services. Temporary fixes using rods and jets have failed to address the underlying issue, leaving residents to suffer repeated blockages and unsanitary conditions.”
She calls on the municipality to act immediately and to fast-track payments to contractors to repair the water leak at the Pick ’n Pay circle. The municipality must also reinforce and repair the collapsing road to restore safe access to the town, and implement permanent infrastructure improvements.
“Without immediate intervention, Odendaalsrus will face further decline, affecting residents’ quality of life and local businesses, and the town’s overall safety. We remain committed to fighting for the community’s rights and will escalate this matter to higher government levels if the municipality fails to act.
“The people of Odendaalsrus deserve clean, safe, and functional infrastructure. The time for excuses is over – it is time for accountability and action.”
