This is the section of Newton’s cenotaph, possibly Boullée’s most emblematic project. A project that allows us to understand what he meant by saying that the architect should aim at the sublime. A concept that we should not relate exclusively to the greatness. Basically, the building is a large sphere that represents both the land and Newton’s discoveries. Its access can be gained through the base and, despite its size, only a small area of such base can be occupied. Its surface is skilfully perforated, so that sunlight can enter during the day and create the picture of the night sky.

The past thirty years have seen frantic attempts by architects to escape the domination of the ÂŤshoeboxÂť concert hall. Rather than struggle with the inescapable acoustic superiority of this traditional shape, the Casa da Musica attempts to reinvigorate the traditional concert hall in another way: by redefining the relationship between the hallowed interior and the general public outside. The Casa da Musica, the new home of the National Orchestra of Porto, stands on a new public square in the historic Rotunda da Boavista. It has a distinctive faceted form, made of white concrete, which remains solid and believable in an age of too many icons. Inside, the elevated 1,300-seat (shoe box-shaped) Grand Auditorium has corrugated glass facades at either end that open the hall to the city and offer Porto itself as a dramatic backdrop for performances. Casa da Musica reveals its contents without being didactic; at the same time, it casts the city in a new light.

Project Etienne-Louis_Boulle (1728-1799) French National Library (1785) Boullée’s ideas had a major influence on his contemporaries. Some of his work only saw the light of day in the 20th century; his book Architecture, essai sur l’art («Essay on the Art of Architecture), arguing for an emotionally committed Neoclassicism, was only published in 1953. The volume contained his work from 1778 to 1788, which mostly comprised designs for public buildings on a wholly impractical grand scale. Boullée’s fondness for grandiose designs has caused him to be characterized as both a megalomaniac and a visionary. His focus on polarity (offsetting opposite design elements) and the use of light and shadow was highly innovative, and continues to influence architects to this day. He was «rediscovered» in the 20th century and has influenced recent architects such as Aldo Rossi.

Create a sense of movement made characteristic of Fomin rhythmically halfcolumns without bases and capitals arranged on the ground floor. Repeating rhythm of the window openings, inherited from the old building. In the right part of the building is arranged through travel. Construction is associated with a moving locomotive.
