When the announcement came that Mardi Gras 2021 was being cancelled, our hearts were heavy. This editorial embodies our heartbreak and is our tribute to not only the cancelled Carnival season, but also all the other weddings and events that have been cancelled, postponed or downsized due to the pandemic. “JAY HAD BEEN WORKING FOR MONTHS TO DESIGN THE PERFECT custom ring with Jeweler Andrew Rowdon,” shares Elizabeth. “Little did I know that a few days before we proposed he had the ring in his pocket when we recreated our first date and went to our favorite bakery, Baked and Wired. He didn’t think that it was a special enough moment. We were living in DC and a few days later we went to the Kennedy Center for a play and he proposed on the terrace. It was such a special and out-of-a-movie moment.“ Elizabeth and Jay intended to invite over 200 guests to their October nuptials, however, COVID changed their plans. “We decided to get married with our immediate family present,” shares Elizabeth. “I’m originally from New Orleans, so I really wanted to have a New Orleans wedding.” The final guest list totaled 20 people. Elizabeth’s cousin Melanie live-streamed her ceremony earlier in 2020 and Elizabeth says, “I saw how special that could be. I knew that we could have a really special wedding and our cherished friends and dear family could safely view from home. It was really important that we keep everyone safe and healthy the best we could during our wedding.”

“Because our wedding was so small, everyone had a part,” says Elizabeth. “From doing a reading, to bringing up the gifts, to serving in the bridal party, to even playing the music it was truly a family event.” The couple incorporated several special details. Elizabeth carried the same rosary from her First Communion and they displayed photos of all the married couples present. Another special touch was including a poem written especially for the wedding day by Jay’s Grand-Mom, Barbara Wood, prior to her passing. After the ceremony, the wedding party Second Lined from St. Patrick’s Church to Lafayette Park. “When we walked out of the church we had a Second Line band waiting and we had a blast Second Lining,” says Elizabeth. “When we got to the park, it was a moment of pure joy. I looked around at everyone’s faces, it was such a special moment. The entire group was dancing and having a blast!” After the Second Line, Elizabeth and Jay took a pedicab, complete with a “Just Married” sign, to Le Pavillon Hotel for their reception. “We had the best time, from a beautiful first dance to the violinist, to toasts, to a four-course meal. It was truly a special day.”

IN NEW ORLEANS WE’RE KNOWN FOR OUR COCKTAIL-STYLE PARTIES, BUT WITH HEALTH AND SAFETY BEING TOP concerns, couples today find themselves modifying their wedding plans and hosting seated dinners instead. While these seated events help guests stay socially distanced, it takes some thinking outside the box to create an engaging event. One option for 2021 couples (and beyond) is hosting a wine dinner event like those Toulouse Gourmet has been catering at The Cannery in Mid City. At these monthly events, guests are treated to a five or six course meals expertly paired with wine selections.

If you’d like to see what these events are all about, The Cannery and Toulouse Gourmet have several upcoming dinners this winter that are open to the public. Their first wine dinner of 2021 will be January 21 and will be exploring selections from The Prisoner Wine Company. This event will be followed by dinners featuring Duckhorn Vineyards on February 25 and Cakebread Cellars on March 25. “We’re very excited about our Winter Wine Dinner Series,” shares Levy. “We carefully select each wine we feature and create a custom menu for each event. Our dinners are experiences that engage all the senses.”

As each course is presented, a wine expert shares details about the wine and the history of the winery it hails from, and also answers questions that guests may have. Hosting a wine dinner for your engagement party or rehearsal dinner is a great way to engage your guests while sharing your favorite foods and wines. “We can create a menu around wines you love or suggest pairings for your favorite foods,” shares Kellie Levy, Director of Sales and Event Manager for Toulouse Gourmet and The Cannery. “If you can think of it, we can create it!” Recent wine dinners at The Cannery have explored Italian wines with Italian wine specialist Antonio Molesini, Belle Glos’ distinctive Pinot Noirs, and selections from the Wagner family of wine, including 24 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

The Pitot House was home to the first U.S. Mayor of New Orleans, James Pitot, and his family. In 1971, The Pitot House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. CARLO PROPOSED TO KIMBERLY BY STAGING AN ELABORATELYconstructed Facebook contest ruse. Kimberly believed that she and Carlo had won a photo shoot that a photographer was giving away online. “My friend tagged me in the post and I submitted my information.” shares Kimberly. “She picked us along with 4 other couples. We scheduled our free shoot at City Park.” When the day of the photo shoot arrived, Kimberly noticed the photographer seemed a bit frustrated that one of the other couples had cancelled on her at the last minute. “She was holding a bag and asked if we would like to try an idea she had. Of course we said yes,” says Kimberly. “She told us to write what we love most about each other on a chalkboard.” On the count of three, they would each reveal what they had written. “When I turned around he was on one knee with “Will you marry me?” on his,” says Kimberly. The entire contest had been part of Carlo’s plan to propose!

“We went on to take our engagement photos that afternoon. I was so over the moon (with) the thought he put in to surprise me!” Kimberly and Carlo planned an October 2020 wedding at the Elms Mansion in New Orleans. The summer and fall had been an extremely active hurricane season, but New Orleans dodged every storm until Hurricane Zeta struck on Halloween week. The storm knocked out power to much of the City for several days, including Kimberly and Carlo’s wedding day. Kimberly and Carlo’s love couldn’t be stopped though and they moved forward with their plans, sans electricity. “My amazing group of vendors managed to come together and throw me my dream wedding WITHOUT POWER!” says Kimberly. The couple shared a First Look under the Elms’ gazebo where they later said “I do” with their family and friends looking on.

COURTNEY AND DREW HAD ALWAYS PLANNED TO EXCHANGE VOWS in an intimate destination wedding in New Orleans, but like so many couples with 2020 wedding dates, they ultimately had to change their wedding date. After city-wide restrictions prevented them from tying the knot on their original May date, the couple rescheduled their wedding to the middle of July. “No one would have ever guessed that the French Quarter in the middle of summer would have given us a short afternoon shower to cool off the day and give Courtney and Drew the perfect courtyard wedding of their dreams,” shares their event planner Becky Lampp of Spanish Oak Events. “The wedding took place in Chateau LeMoyne, a historic hotel built 140 years ago by the famous architect James Gallier. Chateau LeMoyne was the perfect venue for the couple as it provided the perfect New Orleans feeling.”

“It’s hard to pick a favorite part of the wedding day, but it was probably the feeling of happiness we all felt at the reception to all be together...it was a night we will always remember.”

The couple treated their guests to a grand weekend experiencing some of their favorite spots in the city. Stops included snoballs at Hanson’s for their nieces, Liuzza’s by the Track for BBQ shrimp po-boys and gumbo with their dads and a trip to Parasol’s with their cousins for po-boys. “We were lucky enough to have our rehearsal dinner at Clancy’s,” Courtney and Drew share. Drew, a blues and jazz enthusiast, surprised Courtney by booking Walter “Wolfman” Washington and the Roadmasters to play for the courtyard reception.
