Bridge Design and Structure

Leading Topic:

Creating 3D BIM Models of various types of bridges, while designing and making Technical and Manufacturing Drawings.

Site Description:

These are samples from various projects located all over Scandinavia. Construction site as of December 2019

Project Description:

Technical Drawings from Tekla

Here are few samples of my works at COWI - Bridges Scandinavia. My tasks included making 3D BIM models of bridges and creating Technical, Detail and Manufacturing drawings of those bridges and their structural design. These tasks were delivered using various programs such as, REVIT, AutoCAD, but mostly Tekla and Microstation. While using Tekla I had to create various types of components for our 3D-Model. These components had to be smart and parametric, in order to facilitate later changes in the design.

Site Description:

The site is located in near the Gioia Metro Station nearby the Central Station on Milan.

Project Description:

Third Level

The design philosophy was to design a building that is a part of the community, and a structure that is intended for every citizen, even those who aren’t residing here. Each tower is formed by different shaped blocks that are stacked on top of each other to create open and green spaces for every apartment, all the way to the top oor. The concept of bringing gardens and open areas all over the building for the residential areas, creates a very vibrant communal atmosphere throughout the building, which would increase the quality of life for all its residents. These residential towers are encircling the central courtyard. Rather than closing the courtyard only for the residents, we decided to keep it open to the public. This will help the buildings to be part of the community & the neighborhood and it creates a sense of public space for the surrounding area. Our design is centered on creating a building that provides green space and communal areas not only to all the residents but for all the neighborhood. We wanted to design a building that brings happiness, pleasure & joy to everyone, and that is the project is named “Gioia di Gioia” , (Joy of Gioia).

3rd Floor

Project Description: The project was to design a new Design Museum for Mexico City in one of the busiest commercial centers of the city. Our concept utilizes the site's location and shape and envisages an elongated mass along the main axis of the site rising elegantly from the ground and creating a canopy in the southern edge of the building, used as the main entrance point for the visitors. This canopy shape is meant to create a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere, essentially shielding the visitors from the hustle and bustle of Mexico City. The museum section will have light beige concrete surface engraved with ancient Aztec patterns to link the modern building with Mexico's rich cultural heritage. While the educational/office section will have a more subdued dark surface made of fiber cement panels, creating a contrast between the two masses. The landscape around the building also follows the elongated shape of the main mass, while blending into the roof of the building and creating a green roof, partially accessible for visitors through the roof gardens.

Hanging Gardens of Harlem

3D Renders

1) Placed on the existing barge, a slab rises above a series of columns.

2) The challenge is thus to design a space on this slab. 3) The nature of the building is to educate local residents about urban agriculture as well as providing a space for the cultivation of crops, and serve as a hub for packaging and promotion of urban agriculture. Therefore the orientation of the building is a very important factor in the design.

Type of Project:

Educational, Urban Agriculture, Transportation

4) To achieve best possible use of sun light, the building is raised gradually. Occurring in steps and providing a space in each step that can be used as a community garden.

Leading Topic:

Redevelopment of an old abandoned building on Hudson river, by creating a new Transportation Hub and an Educational Center to promote Food and Health through Urban Agriculture.

The glass roof and the glass outer shell, provides sufficient amount of sunlight for the builing. The double skinned exterior around enclosed spaces, and an atrium in open areas, is used in order to prevent overheating inside of the building. The cold air from the sea is drawn into the building’s façade, and as it is warmed by the sun it rises up, and it is ventilated through automatically controlled hatches in the glass roof.

5) The two main green houses are located on the south western, and north eastern sides of the building; the two places that will be showered with unobstructed sunlight.

Site Description:

The site is located in the coastline of the Hudson river by Harlem in the city of New York.

Furthermore, the wide façade structure (roughly 3 feet), and the gardens within them, help provide effective shading from direct sunlight, while providing a form of passive heating in colder seasons. Further environmentally-friendly features include the use of semitransparent

6) The whole structure is encapsulated in a green environmentally-friendly outer shell, that can provide both natural ventilation and sunlight, and a glass/green roof that can both provide natural light, and effectively collect rain water for irrigation.

Project Description:

PV solar panels in the roof, and collection of rainwater, in the green roof area.

Building Structure

Façade

External Glazing

Urban Agriculture Building Shell

Semi-Transparent PV Solar Panels

In addition to given the building its main charecteristic, the façade also facilitates the structure ’s environmentally green features.

Roof Secondary Structure

It is designed as a string of trapeze-shaped terraces, placed inversely on one another, forming stretched hexagonal shapes all around the façade, thereby providing the support system for its structure.

Roof Primary Structure

These hexagons form gardens that are about 3 feet wide, and are accessed by a series of stairs and access paths that run all around the building, adjacent to the façade.

Hydroponic F a r m i n g

Hydroponic Farming is a method of farming that uses nutrients in water in concentrated form for growing plants without soil.

The hexagonal shapes also provide the opportunity to enhance the aesthetic features of the building’s exterior and better integrate it with its location. By breaking the pattern of the hexagons, an effect is created, giving the illusion that the building actually rises out of the see in a natural, organic way. This is further emphasized by the shape of the hexagons, and their blue glass exterior that implicitly refer to the water from which it rises.

Aquponic F a r m i n g

Aquaponic Farming uses the waste produced by Fish in the Aquaculture tanks as fertilizers for the Hydroponic Farming.

NYC - USA Harlem Edge Project ENYA Competition

This project seeks to bring together various functionalities, while effectively creating a sense of synergy amongst them. Placed on the existing barge, a slab rises above a series of columns lifting the building to the level of the access bridge, while providing access to the sea at the barge level for passengers and goods. Above this slab on the ground floor series of terraces rise up in succession to create community gardens and connect the ground floor to the 1st floor. Here, the sunlight conditions are ideal, and two diagonally place greenhouses provide the controlled spaces within which crop cultivation can take place in an urban environment. Meanwhile, on the ground floor, modern teaching facilities including a library and a laboratory form the educational areas. The whole building is enclosed in a hexagonally shaped façade framing system, and a glass roof, that bring both natural light and natural ventilation to the building. All in all, this project seeks to bring the various natural elements, within the confines of an urban environment, and provide an atmosphere which is ensconced from the hustle and bustle of the city, while at the same time being very much at the heart of the community.

Reshaping The Hongkou District

Master Plan N

Shanghai - China

Orientation Design Concept

Type of Project:

Housing, Commercial, Hotel, Landscape, UrbanAnalysis

Leading Topic:

Redevelopment of an old neighborhood in Shaghai.

Site Description:

The Great Wall of China ( U r b a n Ve r s i o n ) Today’s Shanghai’s Urban Structure is made of rows and rows of giant skyscrapers, which make it look like an Urban version of the Great Wall of China.

Lack of Free Movement These endless rows of Skyscrapers, diminish the movement and the flow of people in the urban environment.

L i m i t e d V i e w s Not only this type of desing, will create only two views, but the skyscrapers are obstructing each other’s views. Moreover they cast huge shadows.

Lack of Green Areas Today in Shanghai, there is a lack of courtyards and green spaces, and the lay out of the buildings, avoids the creation of any central courtyard.

We can Solve these Problems by «Breaking Down» these skyscrapers into smaller segments.

Carpet Model Analysis

The project is in an old neighborhood, which has experienced a dramitic increase in population, while at the same time its resources and services remained the same. Hongkou District is home to many residents of Shanghai who are leaving in old and heavily dense zone, with very basic urban facilities.

Project Description: The Project is a collaboration between Politecnico di Milano in Italy and the Tongji University in Shanghai. In our design we wanted to preserve the character of Hongkou and to mixed the different types of usage throughout the Master plan. Every few buildings create a Residential Complex, which hosts a public space for its residents and bring the social environment to a more private scale for the reisdents. These residential complexes also include commercial activities that would atract more lively hood to the block. The pathways are designed to create an access throughout the site. Moreover there are public social gathering spaces between the buildings, which would create a friendly environment for the residents and the visitors. Vertical Social Gathering spaces are made by voids in the buildings. This will help to bring the community together and to minimize the distance for social environments for all the residents. Moreover it will create a nice and warm atmosphere for all.

N e w

O r i e n t a t i o n

By «Breaking down» the wall we can reorganize the structure and create different orientations.

Freedom

of

Movement

Different Orientations, provide various pathways whic not only bring a sort of amusement and fun for the residents and the visitors, but it also facilitates the flow of pedestrian and the bicycle movement.

Various Views and Optimum Usage of the Sunlight

Vertical & Horizontal Green Spaces

Another great feture of this desing is the creation of different views as well as achieving the maximum use of sun light for all the resident and to avoid the shadows casted by other buildings.

In this design both the «Vertical» and «Horizontal» green spaces are considered, which will be used to bring Social Gathering Spaces and Relaxation Areas for the occupants. This design also provides a central courtyard for the residential complexes.

Each of the towers consist of 9 stories and they provide a new ground for Ericssons Headquarters in the region. Its all glazed facade gives the buildings a shiny look and makes them stand out in the Leonardo Project. I was involved on this Project while I was employed at Mario Bellini Studio.

Project Description: The propose of the project was to design two blocks of buildings. One residential and one office with environmentally friendly features. By orienting the building correctly we had to maximize the use of sun light, both for harvesting energy by Photo-Voltaic Solar panels and also for natural lighting of the rooms, without overheating the building. By analysing the path of the winds we also had to make the building suitable for Natural Ventilation. By Implementing Giovani and Olgyay’s Chart and by using programs such as, Archisun, Comfort, RAFIS, Idea, RET Screen, Casanova, and Heliodon, we could achieve our goal with more accurate results.

Project Description: During the course of «Theories & Techniques of Representation» in Master’s of Architecture at Politecnico di Milano, our project was to analyze the structure of a building of our choice structurally, through a set of drawing, sketches and illustrations. These drawings needed to help us and others to figure out the building’s structure, construction and formation. In order to understand the structure of the Hearst Tower behind its facades more clearly, I tried to illustrate the building from different views and varios angles. Every single one of those drawings helped me to discover new and different elements of the building. The Perspective drawings assisted me in grasping the shape and the form of the building, while the Isometric view were extremely helpful in understanding the building’s structural connection, both in the tower and between t
