Fundamental Principles: The following principles are fundamental to understanding and developing a “Culture of Respect”. Principle No. 1: Every human being is unique and has inherent worth and value and therefore should be treated with RESPECT. Respect means to be treated with care and consideration. Principle No. 2: Respect is not only an attitude, but also an observable behaviour. Respect will be clearly demonstrated in the following areas: • • • • •

Respect for others Respect for yourself Respect for property Respect for positions of authority Respect for the environment.

Principle No. 3: Every member of our community knows inherently how to demonstrate RESPECT. Principle No. 4: If a member of our community is not treating others or themselves with RESPECT, they are making a conscious decision not to do so. CHOOSE RESPECT POLICY Rationale:

Principle No. 5: Every member of our community is responsible for their own actions and choices. These actions and choices will always have consequences. Principle No. 6: It is acknowledged that every member of our community may at some time fall short of the “Code of Behaviour”. However, by providing an explicit standard or benchmark for what is right and acceptable behaviour, we are holding up a standard of behaviour to work towards. Failure to meet the expectations will be addressed within a restorative justice framework, always ensuring the safety and security of all members of the community.

At Nexus Boarding there is a commitment to provide a safe, supportive environment for our community. To this end, there is a strong commitment to develop and maintain a “Culture of Respect” throughout our community. The “Culture of Respect” is expressed in the following “Code of Behaviour”. Code Of Behaviour: Every member of Nexus Boarding House is encouraged to “CHOOSE RESPECT”. To “CHOOSE RESPECT” is to make a conscious effort to: • • • • • • •

6

Treat others with Respect, no matter how they treat you. Treat yourself with Respect. Forgive others who do not treat you with Respect. Resist your natural desire to pay back or take revenge. Apologise when you do not treat others with Respect. Support others who are not being treated with Respect. Ask for support when others do not treat you with Respect.

ACCOMMODATION Younger learners share a room for four. As they progress to IGCSE exam years, they move into twin or triple sharing rooms. Each boarder has his or her own desk and bookshelves for independent study. IB Diploma learners have their own single study bedrooms. While the kitchen provides ample food for the boarders, each floor has a kitchenette. Boarders can prepare snacks, make coffee and tea, or just heat up some noodles in the microwave. Each floor has an attractive recreation area where students can chat, watch TV, listen to music or just read quietly. The boarder’s room is their responsibility. They must maintain it carefully. The room should be tidied by 7.20am every morning ready for inspection by the house parent. This means the bed is made, nothing is on the floor, clothes are hung up, and shoes, paper and books are packed away neatly. • • • •

Boys are strictly forbidden from entering the girls’ floor. Girls are strictly forbidden from entering the boys’ floor. Boarders are not permitted to enter a room other than their own unless specifically invited. Communal areas must be kept tidy and the rights of others to share communal facilities must be respected.

PASTORAL CARE

TYPES OF BOARDING

There are four floors of accommodation, two floors for boys and two floors for girls. A house parent lives on the same floor as the boarder and looks after each floor of 28 boarders. The house parent develops a strong relationship with the boarders in their care and is the one who has most contact with them on a daily basis. Therefore the house parent is the first point of contact should parents want to check on the progress, or well being of their children.

There are three types of boarding: 1. 2. 3.

8

The boarders are surrounded by an enthusiastic and committed “triangle of care” in everything they do. This triangle consists of the house parent, the Matron and the Director of Boarding. The boarder has the opportunity to talk to any of the people in this triangle should they have any concerns regarding anything at all.

Full Boarders: These boarders stay in boarding 24 hours 7 days a week. Weekly Boarders: These boarders board from Monday morning to Friday afternoon. Day Boarders: These boarders arrive at 7am and can leave at 7pm daily (Monday to Friday). They may also study with other boarders during the first study session which ends at 8-30pm. They have breakfast and dinner in boarding and take part in after school activities.

APPEARANCE OF BOARDERS

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Hair: Girls and boys should have clean and tidy hair which is appropriate for school. Common-sense should prevail, e.g. if hair is so long that it is covering the eyes then a haircut might be in order. Boarders who want to radically change their hairstyle/colour must first get permission from their parents.

House parents supervise study sessions and help boarders with their homework. The boarding house is equipped with high-speed wi-fi, giving boarders Internet access to enable them to continue working in the boarding environment.

Dress: When boarders are outside their residential areas on their floor they must wear appropriate clothing and footwear. E.g. boys must wear a shirt and girls must be dressed suitably. Footwear: Flip - flops and sandals are acceptable in the boarding house, but enclosed shoes must be worn to school. Various activities will also demand certain types of footwear. Make-up/Toiletries: If girls choose to wear make-up then the female house parents may advise them on how to apply the make-up in a practical manner. E.g. light make-up for school and a little heavier for outings and other functions. Jewellery: Boarders should be encouraged to keep jewellery to a minimum and dress appropriately for a school setting. REGARDING STUDY TIME Study time is held between 7.00pm to 8.30pm Monday to Thursday for everyone. Years 10 to 13 may extend their study time beyond 9.15pm. All boarders are expected to be ready to commence study on time.

RECREATION AND ACTIVITIES School Activities: All boarders are encouraged to take part in the various activities organized by the teaching staff. These may range from playing in a sports team, helping as a team manager or coach, taking part in Model United Nations activities, debating, drama or music, or joining the School Council. Weekend Activities: Each week boarders are given the option to sign up for a range of optional activities. These outings include activities such as: tenpin bowling, walks, movies, golf, sailing, bike riding and when possible drama and music. The boarding fees cover most of these activities. Parents will be informed if there are any additional charges for activities.

Study Time In Rooms: • • • •

Boarders work quietly and independently respecting the needs of others to concentrate on their work. Headphones can be used for listening to music as long as it does not disturb other boarders. No visiting of other rooms is allowed during prep. Boarders wishing to work together must get permission to do so from their house parent.

Sunday Study Time: This time can be used to prepare for the coming week. E.g. Check assignment dates, sporting commitments, revise work or organize books for Monday, catch up on some reading or clean up the room.

HOMESICKNESS

THE MEDICAL CENTRE AND HEALTH ISSUES

Boarders coming to Nexus Boarding for the first time may suffer from homesickness. As separation from parents is one of the strongest fears in childhood, it is no wonder that some boarders will be homesick at some stage during their stay at Nexus Boarding.

There is a resident Matron in the boarding house. She lives next to the Medical Centre and her primary role is to take care of the boarders when they need medical assistance.

The following are some steps, which can prove useful in heading off homesickness in boarders: • • • • • • • • • •

16

Include the boarders in the decision of coming to Nexus. Look at the brochures together and of course, try and visit Nexus Boarding together. Discuss your expectations for the separation and the boarder’s expectations. This includes why they are going, and what you hope they will gain from the experience. Encourage the boarder’s independence and have trial separations. Discuss topics such as set times to call and how often you will make contact. Know what procedures are in place at Nexus Boarding regarding parent/boarder contact times. Communicate with the house parent to check on the progress of the boarder. Involve the boarder in the packing. Put some familiar items in the suitcase that will help make them feel at home in their new environment. Make the departure time cheerful. Set the tone by talking about the positives of the new experience. Don’t bribe or promise to bring the boarder home if they do not like Nexus Boarding. Such behaviour indicates to the boarder that you think they will not be able to handle the separation. Write and call regularly, focusing on the positives. Avoid dwelling on how much you miss them! Do not discuss a list of events the boarder is missing from home. Enjoy the boarding experience along with the boarder.

nexus.edu.my NISP

During school hours if boarders are unwell, they go to the School infirmary and are attended to by the School nurse. If a boarder is too sick to stay at School, they are then sent back to boarding to be looked after by the Matron. All medical and dental appointments are organised through the Matron. All medication or any supplement taken by boarders is kept and dispensed by the Matron. Boarders should not take someone else’s medication, or have any type of medication in their possession. It is important that parents fill in the School basic medical form accurately and comprehensively so that those who need to be informed are aware of any special conditions, treatments or allergies that a child may have as well as any relevant medical history. In addition it is important that the School be informed should there be any changes or developments relating to a child’s health. Boarders are covered by the School’s accident insurance policy which is likely to cover all medical expenses should an accident occur. However parents will be charged for medical transportation. Parents must organise general health cover for their children. In the event of an emergency, a boarder will be taken to one of the local hospitals. A staff member will accompany the boarder to the hospital and the parents will be informed as soon as possible. The duty of care will be transferred to the hospital once the boarder has been collected by an ambulance or arrives at the hospital.

POLICY ON ALCOHOL AND DRUGS

LEAVE POLICY

Nexus Boarding has a “no tolerance” policy in regards to the use of alcohol and other drugs by boarders. This use does not necessarily have to be on Nexus property and therefore includes anywhere and any time. Any involvement by a Nexus boarder in the use or possession of alcohol or illicit drugs, can result in immediate expulsion from the campus.

Going on leave is an important part of being a boarder. Nexus has a generous leave policy so that boarders can leave the boarding house to spend time with relatives and friends on the weekend and at other times nominated by staff. It is important that leave is organized with the consent of parents so that in partnership with house parents everyone is aware of the arrangements for the leave.

POLICY ON SMOKING Nexus is a non – smoking campus for all persons including learners, staff and visitors. It is therefore an expectation that boarders will refrain from smoking anywhere on the campus and also while associated with any boarding or school activity. Nexus Boarding believes that the health, safety and well being of its learners is paramount, and is therefore willing to assist boarders with help or referral to appropriate resources in order that they cease smoking. Our policy for boarders who smoke has 3 steps: •

Boarders who are known to be smoking will be counselled by staff, or offered advice or referral to appropriate resources. Parents will be informed and boarders will receive a sanction. Boarders who choose to smoke following the above, will be counselled and given a more serious sanction and the parents will be informed. Assistance or referral will be again offered to boarders. Boarders who continue to smoke following the above intervention will be expelled.

GUARDIAN For overseas boarders and boarders living outside the peninsular, parents must nominate an adult living within relatively short travelling distance of the school. The guardian can be a close friend or relative who should be over 25 years of age. The guardian will be required to provide accommodation when the boarding facilities are closed. In the case of emergencies the guardian and/or parents will be contacted. Parents will remain the main contact.
