What you need to join a course: Adult Community Learning operates an open access policy to its classes. There are no formal entry requirements and access to classes will not be restricted on the grounds of prior attainment, age, employment or any other reasons.
Important Information All classes are correct at the time of print. We may change or add to the courses advertised, for instance where a course is under or over-subscribed. New courses may be introduced throughout the year. Learners’ interests are taken into consideration where a change is made. A class needs a minimum of 8 learners enrolled to run, so if you are interested in attending a course, why not bring a friend?

If you see a course that you like but it’s not being run in your area, please let us know as we may be able to arrange a class if there is enough interest.
As part of the accreditation requirements learners are asked to keep a portfolio of their work which may require an element of written work. If you have any concerns about this we offer free Literacy Skills courses to support your studies. Arrangements can also be made to provide support within the class if needed. The first week of your course will be an induction week where you will have a chance to meet the tutor, complete a learning plan and decide if the course is right for you. This will not be taken out of the learning hours for your course.
Please enrol early to avoid disappointment. Your place on a course cannot be guaranteed until you have paid and we have confirmed.

Working in Partnership Adult Community Learning is partly funded through a franchise agreement with Neath Port Talbot College. In order to ensure the best for all of our learners we also work in partnership with a number of other organisations to provide a high quality learning experience throughout all of our courses. These include the Learner Support Service (see page 3), Regional Essential Skills project (see page 4), Community Development and Projects (see page 7), and many more. Adult Community Learning are members of the Adult Learning Network and sit on the Learning Promotion Group in conjunction with many other learning providers in the Neath Port Talbot area. This group is supported by NIACE Dysgu Cymru (National Institute for Adult Continuing Education) to promote adult learning through different events throughout the year. For example the group have recently hosted the Adult Learner of the Year Awards (see pictures). 1
Course Fees and Financial Assistance
All courses: £120 per 30 weeks paid in two instalments or one payment of £100 paid at time of enrolment. For short courses please contact us or visit our website www.nptacl.org All fees are fully refundable if any course is cancelled or moved to an unacceptable location. Additional Costs: Accreditation costs for the following courses: ABRSM Piano British Sign Language Children’s Care - Learning and Development (funding may be available for this award) Floristry City and Guilds GCSEs and A levels Please enquire for actual costs. Concessions You may be eligible for a reduction in course costs if you are a low income household or in receipt of a means tested benefit. Due to the ongoing changes to benefits please contact us for more information. If you are eligible, the course fee will be just £7.50 for courses up to 10 weeks and £20 for a 30 week course. Free 4Gb USB Memory Sticks In order to become more sustainable, last year learners were given the option of keeping their files electronically on a USB memory stick as opposed to keeping a traditional file. We have decided to offer the same for new learners this year provided they did not take up the offer last year. Additional or replacement USB sticks can be purchased for £6 The Adult Learner Fund Do you need help paying for your learning? It is the aim of Neath Port Talbot Adult Community Learning that no learner is turned away through inability to pay! We could help with course fees, resources, transport etc. Interested? Family Learning
Family Learning Family learning encourages families to become involved in their children’s learning. It gives families the opportunity to learn new skills while at the same time helping their children in a fun way. The courses are free and are delivered across Neath Port Talbot in various schools. Not only parents but carers and grandparents can take part too.
*Use of iPads* Family Learning have piloted a project introducing iPads to the Family Learning programme to support Communication using Mobile Technology.
Some activities from last year include: Christmas Fun - A range of activities including a visit from Henson the Hedgehog, a chance to make a Christmas floral arrangement and of course a visit from Santa! Family Fun Day - All schools involved in the Family Programmes were invited to a fun day in Margam park. School Courses - Classes have included topics such as: phonics, early reading, writing and maths. All activities are designed to complement the Foundation Phase.

Art, Craft and Design
Art
A course designed for students at all levels. Students will become accomplished with using different materials. Drawing and painting from life will become familiar. Learners will keep a portfolio from great painters and photographers together with development of the learners own ideas.
Art
All aspects of art covered including drawing and painting using all medias and materials including found materials as well as traditional materials.
Internet research will also be covered in the class.
Fabric/Needle Crafts
Ever wanted to learn a new craft or develop an existing one - how to make your own soft furnishings such as curtains, cushions, blinds etc? Have you ever wanted to learn how to crochet and hand knit, read patterns or produce baby garments? Do you want to learn the skills of embroidery, cross stitch and needlepoint, or make a family heirloom quilt by patchwork? If so this is the course for you. The classes are workshop based and consist of practical demonstrations and exercises, with professional tips and advice. All ages and abilities welcome, just choose your area of interest. No experience necessary and recycled materials are used wherever possible.

Jewellery Making
This course consists of 4 modules. Each module will require a completed piece of jewellery designed by you from start to finish. Pieces will be guided but you will have a choice of beading, wirework, rope and knotwork. Each week there will also be a ‘taster session’ introducing you to enamelling, glasswork, hammering, soldering, fimo clay bead making and much more. Costs are covered for the taster sessions however you will be expected to fund the costs of your own personal projects.
Sugar Craft
Come along and decorate celebration cakes for family and friends. All abilities welcome. Level 1 - Make flowers and christmas cake Level 2 - Novelty cakes and floral sprays Level 3 - Floral Arrangement in either cold porcelain or sugar.
Stained Glass
A craft course for beginners and improvers to learn the basics of designing and making stained glass windows, light catchers, vases, mirrors etc. Plus the opportunity to try selling your work.
Mosaics
Make Do and Mend
Save Money - STOP throwing away your unwanted items! Upcycle and create unique new pieces. Projects can include: Rugs from Rags, Cushion Covers, Patchwork from old fabrics, Junk into Jewellery and many more. Recycle old plastics, records, cans, cracked plates etc, the list is endless
Card Making
Learn how to make gift cards, invitations and gift boxes for all occasions, for your friends, family, work colleagues, with the opportunity to run your own profit making cottage industry.
Learn how to use a variety of materials: mosaic tiles; pebbles; slate; marble; glass; china etc for making wall hangings, trivet stands, mirror frames, splash backs, paving slabs and more.
Pottery
Learn how to make and glaze pottery. Projects could include: Making bowls, vases, mugs, mirror frames, gifts for family and friends and more. No experience needed.

British Sign Language Level 2 (Signature)
No entry requirements or prior knowledge needed. Course delivered over 30 weeks (1 x 2 hour weekly session). 3 assessments that are externally marked.
British Sign Language Level 1 or equivalent experience required. Course delivered over 2 years (1 x 2 hour weekly session) 1 assessment in the first year 2 assessments in the second year
Progression route to BSL level 2. Vocabulary includes: weather, family, pets, hobbies, work, school and college. Course is delivered in a relaxed, fun learning environment. Varied methods of teaching such as: discussion, pair work, games, whole class teaching.

QCF Diploma Level 2 and Level 3 An opportunity to gain a recognised qualification for those caring for children up to nineteen years of age. Group sessions provide the underpinning knowledge to complement practice and assist the development of your personal evidence portfolio for assessment. Students must attend a work placement (also assessed) for this programme of study and have a current DBS disclosure (Up to 2 intakes per year depending on numbers). Introduction to Childcare A practical course preparing students for the level 2 Diploma looking at children’s social, emotional, physical and creative development. Child Psychology
Supporting Children’s Positive Behaviour Learn how to support positive behaviour and how to respond to inappropriate behaviour. Introduction to Desktop Publishing
This short computer course is for learners who are new to computers and are keen to know how to use a computer at a basic level. The course covers switching on the PC, writing a simple letter, designing a poster and using the Internet and Email. There is an opportunity to progress to level 2 on successful completion.
Computer Configuring and Maintenance An ideal course for people wishing to know how to repair and upgrade their PC. The course covers topics such as identifying components in a PC, installing Operating Systems, Applications and resolving common software problems on the PC. The course at level 3 also looks at new technologies such as saving your work on the cloud and using cloud applications. Enjoying Computers This course is suitable for beginners through to intermediate computer users. Aimed at learners who wish to learn about computers and use different software packages such as Word Processing, Desktop Publishing, PowerPoint, Spreadsheets, Databases, Internet and Email. Computer Skills for the Office Learn the skills needed for using computers in an office. Computers for the Deaf See description for Enjoying Computers. A BSL interpreter is provided for the class.

iPads
Topics include how to list items, set up a Paypal account and set up an eBay shop.
This short course will teach you all you need to know to get started with your iPad. You will learn how to use Safari to browse the internet, how to search the Appstore and download apps, how to connect to the internet, how to use iTunes, accessing your Emails on the iPad and general maintenance and back ups.
Exciting Excel Learn the basic principles of working with spreadsheets. This course will introduce you to the different social networking platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. You will have the opportunity to create an account, edit your profile and upload pictures.
Social Media Level 2 The Level 2 course is ideal for businesses wishing to use social media. It will teach you the difference between a personal account and a page. The level 2 course also covers overcoming security risks on social networking sites.

Food Safety The EDI Food Safety Award is an industry recognised qualification and has been developed with the Sector Skills Councils. Under UK legislation, anyone who handles food as part of their job role must be supervised and instructed and/or trained in food hygiene relevant to their job role. This award is available at level 1, 2 and 3.en and where.
Jamie Oliver’s Home Cooking Skills This course consists of over 80 recipes, all divided into manageable sections and covering key topics from eggs and baking to vegetables and quick-cook meals. This is all supported by a range of fact sheets dealing with other basics and essentials such as:

Digital Photography for Beginners/Improvers
Digital Imaging for Beginners/Improvers
This course covers the basics of digital photography, students learn how to operate the camera in automatic mode, how to hold and care for their equipment and connect the camera to a computer.
This course covers the basics of using Adobe Photoshop. Students will learn how to open Photoshop, import files and make basic adjustments e.g. brightness, contrast and how to save and close files.
Compositional techniques are introduced so students can learn how to make a photograph more appealing.
An introduction to the Photoshop workspace is covered to assist students in identifying the required tools and how to use them effectively. Basic image editing techniques are introduced (paint bucket, text, fill etc) with projects and practical exercises such as creating posters and web banners using layers.
The basics of the technical aspects of photography are explained (shutter speed/ aperture/ISO/flash) and practical exercises are used to demonstrate the effects of the settings. These include ‘Painting with Light’, ‘Panning’, ‘Freezing Action’, ‘Depth of Field’ and more. During the course there are field trips where students can experiment with the techniques covered in class. Students learn how to take Portrait, Landscape, Panoramic, Close up and Creative photographs using a range of camera modes and accessories. Photoshop is used to make basic adjustments to the images such as levels, rotate,c olours and black & white. Students also learn how to prepare and print their photographs.
Students learn how to repair a damaged photograph by using the clone and healing brush tools to repair tears and blemishes. The course includes editing existing photographs to improve/correct mistakes using Photoshop techniques. Students bring their images to class (digital or printed) and modify the images to a satisfactory standard. Image composite techniques are introduced and using practical projects students can blend two or more images together using various photoshop techniques. Colour space, printing, resizing are included in many projects.
Introduction to Landscape Photography

This course covers the basics of landscape photography. Students will be able to identify what makes a good landscape photograph. Students will be able to use composition and camera techniques to take landscape photographs.
Advanced Digital Photography
During this course students will attend field trips to experiment using the techniques covered in class. It’s a great course to see the sights of South Wales while improving your photographic skills.

Level 1 This course is appropriate for learners who are new to the language or for those who wish to refresh their previous knowledge of it. The content covers situations that learners are likely to meet in everyday situations when visiting the country. These subjects include visiting a tourist office, shopping, making a hotel reservation, ordering food and buying fuel. The course is mainly conversational but other communication skills such as listening, reading and some writing are incorporated into the learning. Level 2 This course builds on the knowledge of the language from level 1. Situations encountered in everyday life are covered in greater depth which may also include some unpredictable scenarios. Conversational French is developed which includes learning to communicate in past and future tenses. An element of culture related to the country is also included. Listening, reading and writing skills are developed within the spectrum of the course. Level 3 At this level learners develop their learning in all aspects of the language in order to improve their competency. Though subjects are still focused on everyday situations, learners are encouraged to manage more complex activities within the course which enable them to use them when necessary on visits to the country. These may include situation such as negotiations of purchases or participation in events when staying there.
