Low Poly Animal

I was asked by my graphic design instructor to choose an animal and utilize the tools in Adobe Illustrator to recreate that animal using only color filled triangles. I used smaller triangles for the parts with the most complex lighting or detail; For example, the eyes. I connected the triangles to resemble the shutter of a camera. I also used the pointed sides of the triangles to resemble the most predominate stripes.

Band Poster

For the band poster project, I had to utilize my skills in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to edit and compose a poster for a band or a music album. I chose Mike Krol, a garage rock instrumentalist and singer, and his album I Hate Jazz. To keep with the theme of his musical genre, I tried to mimic a poster spray painted with a stencil onto an old post board full of newspapers. I used an image of a newspaper and edited it to fade onto the red-orange background (a prominent color in the album.) I then edited an image of Mike Krol in Adobe Illustrator, and added it to the middle-left, and added a grungy text and faded lines to give it an imperfect-vandalism feel.

KUHS Logo

My graphic design class was approached by KUHS, a local radio station, to create their new logo to use on their website. The logo has to relate to music, and also have a unique feeling while still remaining relevant. I decided to go with a record player, because that reminds me most of retro music. From scratch, I built a record and turntable graphic in both black and white and in color. I used a font that reminded me of a “futuristic 50’s style, to go along with the newer form of the older record player. To make sure that this design gets a good amount of attention, I used a complimenting pop yellow with light blue to color the design.

Personal Logo

As a very important part in any graphic designer’s journey, I had to make a logo for myself. This project had to relate to myself and had to draw attention and be easily animated. I decided to do a bubble style form to hold my initials, with primary colors to really catch the viewer’s attention. My goal for the font was to go with my round and playful design. The definite forms of the bubbles helped to be easily moved.

Halloween Candy Label

As Halloween was approaching, my class was tasked to design labels to place on candy bags for a fundraiser they were doing. The design had to have graphics on both sides, one with a large graphic and something Halloween related, the other with a name label.

Holiday Card

For the upcoming holidays, we were instructed to design a holiday card that could hold a candy cane when inserted. I decided on an evergreen background, with shades of red and blue for the decorations. I decided to mix the themes of the holidays, with blues, whites, reds, and greens. The piece that holds the candy cane is the ribbon in the very front, where the candy cane is held vertically.

Typography Poster

To help us better understand typography and balance, we were instructed to create a poster using one word and match the meaning with the right font. We also had to balance the image with the sizes of the word while filling the page with only that word. I chose the word “calm,” and instead of matching it to the font, I gave it a sort of juxtaposition; I made the word loud, as if someone was yelling “Be calm!” I chose a background with contrasting colors to make it interesting and blurred it so it doesn’t take the focus away from the typography.

Mutant Animal

In this project, I chose five of my favorite animals and use my knowledge of Adobe Photoshop to edit them into one singular creature, which I call the Lion-Tiger Shibear. The component animals are a lion, tiger, grizzly bear, and shiba inu. At the top, I have the base images I used. I added the lion’s mane to the tiger’s head, and attached it to a bear’s torso with a shiba inu’s tail. I chose a temperate forest in autumn to add to the brown and orange color of the creature.

Graphic Design T-Shirt

I designed a t-shirt for the National Park Technology Center and SkillsUSA. I composed the quote “Be a lion, not a sheep. From a variety of inspirations, and I feel like it best represents the leadership and bravery that you need to be a graphic designer. I used Adobe Illustrator to edit and simplify the face of a lion to help illustrate my quote. Only being able to use two ink colors, I chose to keep most of the graphic white, while using the gold to bring more attention to the quote.

Current Personal Logo

As a way to utilize our new skills in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator as well as referbish our new graphic designer identity, my class had to create a new personal logo to help identify ourselves as graphic designers. For this I’ve used my initials J and F and connected them, creating a loop design. I decided to use light blue, pink, and purple because they work well and have a special place in my heart. I used that font for “designs” to keep with the rounded yet intelligent feeling of my design. I kept the pastel palette for my identity mockup, and I also added a bubbly background to stay with my theme.
