MORALE, WELFARE & RECREATION

AUTO SKILLS CENTERS

MWR The Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation Division administers a varied program of recreation, social and community support activities on U.S. Navy facilities worldwide. Our programs provide active-duty, reserve and retired Navy personnel and their families with sports and physical fitness activities, child development and youth programs, and a variety of food and beverage services. Our mission is to provide quality support and recreational services that contribute to the retention, readiness, mental, physical, and emotional well-being of our Sailors.

AUTO SKILLS The Navy MWR Auto Skills Program provides indoor and outdoor stall space and appropriate tools for authorized patrons to work on personal vehicles. These centers are not intended to be full-service stations, but rather facilities where customer self-help is fostered and automotive skills are learned. Trained MWR professionals provide guidance, when necessary. Many auto skills centers sell automotive-related products, operate car washes and manage the installation's vehicle storage program.

BOWLING Lights are flashing and the music is pumping as everything in sight is glowing in the dark. This is no ordinary nightclub! It's Xtreme bowling, also referred to as "cosmic" bowling. Unlike traditional bowling, Xtreme bowling features black lights, glow-in-the-dark balls, fluorescent pins and lanes combined with pulsating music, a laser light show and atmospheric fog. As lights pulsate to the beat of your favorite music, you'll experience an amazing glow that you won't soon forget as you roll your next strike down the lane. For a fantastic, futuristic, glow in the dark good time, visit one of your regional MWR bowling centers and let the good times bowl. Additionally, all MWR regional bowling centers offer bowling for your recreational pleasure. Regional bowling centers support league actions for all ages and are open daily. Also available in select locations are pro shops, arcade rooms, snack bars and bar facilities. Children's birthday parties, re-enlistments, and command functions are just a few of the functions that can be coordinated at any regional MWR bowling facility.

Our Goal: To empower military youth to build positive, healthy lifestyles as drug-free, successful citizens. Our Mission: To improve combat readiness by providing a drug demand reduction and comprehensive life skills program designed to improve youth resiliency and strength. Vision: During periods of forward deployment, the families of Sailors and Marines remain behind with a burden of maintaining the family home front in the absence of one or more parents. Maintaining quality of life for military families is essential to help ensure deployed personnel are able to alleviate some of the anxiety inherent with leaving family behind. To that end, DEFY's purpose is to produce 9 to12 year-olds with character, leadership, and confidence so that they are equipped to engage in a positive, healthy lifestyles as drug-free citizens and have the necessary skills to be successful in their lives through coordinated community participation, commitment, and leadership. The program develops youths through drug education, leadership and character development, positive role model mentoring, and community outreach to enhance the quality of life for military personnel and their families. Through application of the DEFY curriculum, the program strengthens protective factors in youth and families and reduces those risk factors identified with substance abuse, gang involvement, and crime. By strengthening families through encouragement and development of positive life skills in youth, Navy and Marine Corps members are better able to concentrate on their mission and ultimately help ensure mission accomplishment. Check with your installation Youth Center for DEFY dates and volunteer opportunities.

NAS Oceana Galleys Introduces “Era Rooms” The newly renovated galley at Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana dedicated its latest dining rooms by going back in time. After months of renovation and in celebration of the Centennial of Naval Aviation, the Hornet's Nest Galley at Oceana held a dedication ceremony last fall for the “Era Rooms,” which honors commanding officers in close to 70 years since Oceana's inception. There are a total of eight Era Rooms at the galley, starting counterclockwise with the Fairley Room, dedicated to Oceana's first commanding officer, Lt. Jesse Fairley back when NAS Oceana was called Naval Auxiliary Air Station Oceana. This section of the room also features Oceana's 1948 canteen, a painting of enlisted barracks on Oceana's north side that was washed away in mud in 1944 and Capt. Jim Webb, points out a photo of Lt. Ronald L. “Rhino” Wise, who died July 30, inverted gull wing Corsairs and Hellcats parked on the flightline. 1998 in a midair collision while deployed aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). The second room is the Quilter Room dedicated to Oceana's 7th commanding officer, Capt. Joseph F. Quilter, from 1949-1952; the third room is the Rumsey Room, which tributes to the 17th commanding officer Capt. Dexter C. Rumsey II, from 1964 - 1966; The Earnest Room is dedicated to Capt Albert K. Earnest, who was the 18th commanding officer from 1966 - 1968; The fifth room is the Knutson Room, dedicated to the 22nd commanding officer, Capt. William D. Knutson, 1974 -1976; the Allen Room tributes to the 28th commanding officer, Capt. John E. Allen, from 1986-1988; and the final room is the Craine Room dedicated to the 31st commanding officer, Capt. John W. Craine Jr., who ran Oceana from 1992 - 1994. “It's like a time machine of NASO aviation, where we began and where we are in modern naval aviation,” said Cummings. “It is meant to inspire and educate the young Sailors who patronize the NAS Oceana galley, as well as the older Sailors, I suppose. I know I personally have gained quite a bit of knowledge from this project.” DISCOVER MAGAZINE QUARTERLY
