Farewell President Burton NSCC’s President Wayne M. Burton to Retire

“President Burton has positively impacted the lives of tens of thousands of NSCC students.” — Richard Yagjian, NSCC alum and chair of the Board of Trustees.

After 13 years of leading North Shore Community College through unprecedented growth and expansion, President Wayne M. Burton will retire July 31, 2013. A catalyst for change, President Burton’s tenure has included double digit enrollment increases, resulting in the college’s highest ever graduating classes. He created a culture of championing student success - boosting the college’s outstanding and innovative academic programs. Dr. Burton brought Service-Learning to the college, for which it now wins national distinctions and established NSCC’s Public Policy Institute (PPI), the only one of its kind at a community college in New England with initiatives ranging from community outreach in the Gateway City of

Lynn, to research and forums on public policy issues. His vision and strategic leadership resulted in the addition of two new buildings to the college’s Danvers campus, with an expansion/addition pending for the college’s urban facility in Lynn. Under his direction, Essex Aggie vocational programs were integrated into the college and he has advanced the college’s role in preparing the region’s workforce with skills training and retraining programs to meet state workforce needs. As the 100th president nationwide to sign onto The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, he spurred the adoption of a holistic commitment to sustainability that engages the entire college and serves as an educational model for the North Shore region. Dr. Burton led construction and funding efforts for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ first, and nation’s second, Zero Net Energy Building, the new state-of-theart Danvers campus Health Professions & Student Services Building. The college was recently honored with the prestigious Massachusetts Leading By Example Award for public leadership, stewardship and commitment. On the national level, President Burton helped shape national policy as the only community college president to serve on the U.S. DOE Committee on Measures of Student Success. He also brought to the college a dedication to students with disabilities evidenced by his service on the state Special Commission Relative to Autism and as chair of the national Community College Consortium on Autism and Intellectual Disabilities. “In his 13 years as President of North Shore Community College, President Burton has positively impacted the lives of tens of thousands of NSCC students

North Shore Community College will open stateof-the-art culinary and cosmetology programs at 270 Union Street, Lynn this September. The new location will be close to the college’s existing McGee building, which is slated for a $28 million renovation and expansion. The Union Street campus will be easily accessible to students as it is adjacent to the MBTA commuter rail and parking garage, and also offers ample on-site parking. The building will include: kitchens for teaching and baking, culinary storage/freezer/cooler, a 40-seat cosmetology salon, teaching and reception area. There will be room for additional classrooms, offices and a student lounge. The location offers visible store fronts and easy street access to the two student learning laboratories open to the public – the Scholars Den Restaurant and Cosmetology Salon. The Scholars Den operates two days a week for 20 weeks a year with reservation-only seatings, and cosmetology provides a student-run, instructor-supervised hair, skin and nail salon three days a week in the morning from December-May.

Celebrating OTA

Fieldwork Education! Fieldwork education is a critical component of the college’s Occupational Therapy Assistant program. All OTA students complete active classroom instruction and extensive field experience in a variety of settings, including rehabilitation facilities, general hospitals, outpatient clinics, long term care facilities, home health agencies, public school systems, and various community programs servicing those with or at risk for health related problems and dysfunction. Fieldwork supervisors who are also former NSCC students have shared the following feedback regarding our OTA program and fieldwork experiences:

I have NSCC to thank for a great deal in my professional and personal life. North Shore offered me so many opportunities to grow and take on leadership positions within the profession. I gained confidence and the skill set I needed to move on to new challenges. I hold my time at NSCC very close to my heart and I am always willing to give back to those who supported me and helped me to develop into the professional and person I am today. - Justin Galvin, ‘99 Clinical Fieldwork Supervisor at Tewksbury State Hospital

Justin has given back to the program for the past nine years. He has taken NSCC students for fieldwork at Tewksbury Hospital, as well as in his previous position at Whittier Rehab Hospital. As a graduate of NSCC’s OTA program, Justin Galvin knows “the high level of expectations and quality of work that the OTA program at NSCC puts forth. This is apparent in the success of their graduates”, citing NSCC students who have been hired after completing their fieldwork placements. Another NSCC grad, Lisa Swain ’00, is a fieldwork supervisor at Peabody Glen Health Care Center. Lisa said she would “definitely” recommend fieldwork supervision to her colleagues, adding she really loves mentoring the students, watching them grow, learn and become professionals.

Occupational Therapy Assistant, combines his passion for music and healing Francis Watlington, aka “Bermuda Bill Byron”, is a graduate of NSCC’s Occupational Therapy Assistant program, Class of 1996. He enjoys a business and a career that he describes as his calling — he is a therapeutic musician, a specialty that allows him to combine his two passions: music and healing. He holds an associate degree from NSCC as an OTA, an undergraduate degree in psychology from West Virginia Wesleyan College, and has had a long and varied career as a musical entertainer. Born and raised in Bermuda, he goes by the stage name “Bermuda Bill Byron”. Early in his career as a musician he worked in the tourism industry, enjoying extensive travel while working as an entertainer in hotels, pubs and lounges, and as an on-board cruise musician. Bill left Bermuda to pursue his education and interest in healthcare, working in occupational therapy, recreation therapy and running psychiatric therapy groups. His current Francis Watlington, “Bermuda Bill Bryon” Class of 1996

career was born when he realized that he could combine these elements with his musical background to reach and help people. Bill’s unique blend of training, skills and experience in music, entertaining, health care and therapy allow him to connect with audiences in a very specialized way. His experience in varied health care settings allows him to adapt each performance to the environment he is in. His understanding of the varied limitations and challenges of his audiences enables him to tailor each performance, playing the music that they will relate to, delivered in the way that best reaches them. Some audiences will respond to the calming influence of music, while others may be best served by music that will stimulate, penetrating conditions like Alzheimer’s or the effects of certain medications. Whether it is entertaining a group or providing room-to-room visits and a very individualized approach, Bill says music is a “universal connector” and he feels honored to be able to facilitate healing — whether it is physical, mental or emotional.

President Burton Cont. from page 1 and made a tremendous contribution to the workforce development and economic vitality of the North Shore region,” said Richard Yagjian, NSCC alum and chair of the college’s Board of Trustees. Prior to his tenure at NSCC, Dr. Burton served as the Dean of the School of Business at Salem State University. A Bowdoin graduate and Vietnam veteran, he earned his MBA at the University of New Hampshire and his Ed.D. at Vanderbilt. Burton served in Vietnam as a Captain, U.S. Army, 9th Infantry Division, receiving three Bronze Stars and two Army Commendation medals. He and his wife Betsey have two sons, a daughter and two grandchildren. Upon his retirement Burton plans to expand his civic activity in his home community of Durham, NH.

cational and career opportunities for Lynn residents and allow the college to more fully contribute to the revitalization of downtown Lynn.” “We are very excited about moving our cosmetology and culinary arts programs to Union Street in Lynn” said Patricia Brown, Dean of NSCC’s Business Sciences Division. “The newly renovated program spaces will include many design elements that will enhance the instructional experience for our students. The kitchens and bake shop will feature state-of-theart equipment and will include a multifunctional restaurant that can be used for both à la carte and buffet services. The Cosmetology salon will feature specially designated areas for color treatments, hair styling, manicures, facials, pedicures, and make-up artistry.” The college intends to fully utilize the new space and will also be scheduling day and evening noncredit health courses at the Union Street campus such as nursing assistant/home health aide, EKG technician, phlebotomy technician and its health care technician certificate program. Other courses will include horticulture, aesthetics and nail technician among others. The college is partnering with Higher Education Partners, a private company specializing in utilizing private equity investment funding to assist community colleges in meeting their space and facility needs. HEP will lease the property, assume all financial risk for the project, and will outfit the programs with state-of-the-art equipment. For this commitment they will earn a service fee based on program revenues. HEP has previously worked with Bristol and Northern Essex CCs on projects, with two other MA community college projects in the pipeline. For information on admission into either the cosmetology or culinary program, please contact Jennifer Kirk, Director of Admissions, at 978-762-4000, ext. 4333 or jkirk@northshore.edu.

“Students have fresh ideas and perspectives, which helps to keep you fresh. They are full of excitement and enthusiasm!” Lisa agreed with Justin that working with students is a great way to “give back”. She is grateful that she learned so much in fieldwork placement and that as a new grad was able to immediately get a very good job. Lisa likes knowing that she is helping a student in the same way she received help. We are very grateful to Justin, Lisa and all of the individuals and organizations who support and mentor our OTA students, giving to the college and the future of the occupational therapy profession!

Celebrating NSCC’s 30th Forum on Tolerance! In March, NSCC held the Forum on Tolerance. The title of the spring event was “Hope, Peace, Reconciliation & Love: The Message of Tolerance by Marc Chagall,” presented by noted authority and author on Marc Chagall, Vivian Jacobson. The artist and writer Marc Chagall (1887-1985) had exhibitions in the major art institutions of the world throughout his career. Though he experienced anti-Semitism, the Russian Revolution and escaped from the Nazis, he never let it impact his art or cause him to lose hope in humanity. Instead, he used his artistic talents to spread love for all and strive for understanding, hope and peace. It is his commitment to tolerance that makes him an excellent subject for the 30th Forum on Tolerance, noted Forum Coordinator Sheldon Brown.

Committee members are shown below celebrating the 30th presentation of this series dedicated to understanding one another by sharing human experiences. The topics of past forum presentations have included bullying, immigration and human rights, acceptance and

understanding of a variety of religions, autism and social justice issues. All Forum on Tolerance events are free and open to the public. Stay connected for details on upcoming forum topics and other college events and activities.
