About the College This year’s Commencement marks North Shore Community College’s (NSCC) 54th graduating class. Nearly 1,000 graduates will join the nearly 42,000 alumni NSCC has helped produce. In September 1965, NSCC opened its doors at the former Briscoe School in Beverly to welcome 474 students to five programs of study. Today NSCC has grown into a comprehensive community college offering 80 associate degree and certificate programs to 9,000 students annually. Approximately 250,000 people have taken courses at the College’s three campuses in Danvers, Lynn and Middleton, or online. The College is a resource for the 500,000 residents of the 26 cities and towns along the coastal region north of metropolitan Boston to Cape Ann. NSCC is a catalyst for personal, community and regional growth through education, training and civic engagement. Blending tradition and innovation, liberal arts and career preparation, intellectual development and cultural and personal

growth, we foster a diverse and caring community of learners where all are welcome and each is challenged. NSCC offers excellent educational opportunities to anyone seeking an education. The College’s student population is diverse in terms of age, income, work history, educational backgrounds and goals, culture and ethnicity. The student population includes traditional college-aged students, adult learners, middle- to low-income earners, first-generation college-goers, veterans, those seeking additional skills or career changes, the unemployed and underemployed and recent immigrants. Over 90% of NSCC graduates stay to live and work on the North Shore, making them a vital part of the region’s workforce and economy. At NSCC we believe our greatest contribution to the Commonwealth is the success and achievement of our students.

The Ceremony A college or university commencement symbolizes the induction of the graduates into the guild of scholars whose tradition reaches back through the centuries of Western Civilization to include all those who have sought learning. Graduates, their families, and their friends can take pride in participating in such an ancient and honorable rite.

Commencement Speaker Elizabeth Warren was the first woman ever elected to the United States Senate from Massachusetts in 2012, and is now serving her second term as the state’s senior senator. She was a recent Democratic candidate for the US Presidency. Senator Warren grew up in Oklahoma on the ragged edge of the middle class. Her family came within an inch from losing their house after her dad suffered a heart attack, but her mom got a minimum wage job at Sears that saved their family. Senator Warren dropped out of college at 19 to get married, but she got a second chance at a public college that cost $50 a semester and became the first in her family to graduate from college so she could live her dream of becoming a public school teacher. She graduated from the University of Houston, then earned a law degree from Rutgers University and taught law at several universities including Harvard, specializing in

bankruptcy law. Senator Warren is one of the nation’s leading progressive voices, fighting for big structural change that would transform our economy and rebuild the middle class. She is a fearless consumer advocate who has made her life’s work the fight for middle class families including focusing on consumer protection, economic opportunity, and the social safety net. After the 2008 economic crash, she fought to create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to protect people from getting tricked and scammed by big banks and corporations. The CFPB has already returned more than $12 billion to American consumers who’ve been cheated. Now, Senator Warren is fighting to end Washington corruption and make our government work for everyone — not just the rich and powerful. Senator Warren has authored five and coauthored six books.

Student Speaker Larissa Louissaint dreamed of being the first in her family to attend a four-year university. However, after researching her options to study law, she concluded it was not going to be financially feasible to attend the colleges where she had been accepted. That’s when she discovered NSCC’s paralegal program and deemed it perfect: affordable, with her chosen program, and a short drive from home. She joined the TRIO program but otherwise solely concentrated on her studies her first two semesters. Feeling as she was missing out on something, she then branched out into student activities, successfully running for and attaining three

vice presidencies: MultiCultural Society, Culture and Inclusion for the Student Government Association; and Leadership for Phi Theta Kappa. Next she became President of the MultiCultural Society and Phi Theta Kappa, and became Chief of Staff for the Student Government Association. She was recently named to the PTK All-MA Academic Team for exceptional student leaders. Larissa is transferring to Suffolk University this fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in law, after which she plans to attend law school. She aspires to become an attorney who will advocate for the betterment of others.

Student Soloist Born and raised in Venezuela, Luis Navarro enrolled in five college level classes at NSCC within three months of arriving in the US. His transition to a new life helped build his character, leadership skills, and social skills. He is an excellent student with a 3.8 GPA, but is also actively engaged in college activities. As a first-generation college student, he is part of TRIO. He initiated the college’s Music Club and was its first president, serving two terms. He wrote a song for the “Faces of North Shore” video, which is played at Commencement and organized and hosted three Open

Mic events. He was a member of the Multicultural Society Club, the First Generation Club, and the Student Government Association. Luis is proud to be an NSCC student and is one of the college’s biggest advocates. For his efforts he received the Distinguished Service and Lisa Milso Award for Distinguished Service awards. He transferred to Suffolk University in January where he is studying political science so he can use his voice and leadership abilities to make a positive change in the world.

Modern Scholars in Ancient Garb By Harold Seymour, Ph.D., Former Chairman North Shore Community College History Department

The color and pageantry marking a college commencement is rooted in long tradition. Academic degrees have been awarded for more than 800 years, the first known being conferred by the University of Bologna in the twelfth century. The caps and gowns worn by the faculty and the graduation class are also inherited from early medieval universities. Scholars of those days wore the gown and its attached hood for the dual purpose of keeping warm in drafty, unheated buildings and of identifying the particular clerical order to which they belonged.

The Gown

The style of modern academic costume in America is based on an intercollegiate code established in 1895. The gown is commonly black, differing in type according to the level of the degree held. Gowns of foreign universities and a few American institutions are often red or other brilliant hues. The doctor’s gown is paneled in velvet, and has bellshaped sleeves, each trimmed with three matching velvet bars. The velvet may be black or of the color representing the field of learning in which the degree was earned. For example, the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) the highest degree which a university can confer, is designated by blue, for centuries the color associated with wisdom and truth. The Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) may be indicated by red, a traditional color of the church; and the Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) by the royal purple of the king’s court. (The title of Doctor refers to the degree one holds, not to a profession or occupation, and by ancient definition means an eminently learned person, one sufficiently skilled in any branch of knowledge to teach it.) Masters’ and bachelors’ gowns have no trim. Sleeves of the masters’ are extra-long and are open either at the forearm or the wrist. Those of the bachelors’ gowns are pointed.

The Cap

The mortarboard cap is proper for all American degrees and is worn both indoors and out on all occasions when gowns are used. The tassel, worn over the left front quarter of the cap, may be black or may be in a color representing the degree. Only holders of doctors’ degrees may wear a gold tassel.

The Hood

The hood is the most striking feature of the academic costume. Its shape, size and colors show both the degree of the wearer and the college which conferred it, so that anyone attending an academic function in America can distinguish holders of bachelors’, masters’ and doctors’ degrees, and at the same time tell the university or college where they were obtained. The shell or base of the hood is invariably of black material, but the lining is in the color of the college or university granting the degree. As the faculty and trustees of North Shore Community College march down the aisle at Commencement, the audience will see the official colors of the many colleges and universities represented in the hoods of the participants. Some of these might be: Tufts University, brown and blue; Boston College, maroon and gold; Harvard University, crimson; Columbia University, light blue with white chevron; and Salem State University, orange and brown. The color of the border or edging of the hood designates the field of learning in which the degree was earned; for instance, white represents arts; scarlet−theology; golden yellow−science; brown−fine arts; purple−law; light blue− education; and drab−business administration. The bachelor’s hood has a two-inch velvet border, the master’s a three-inch one. The size of the hood also helps identify the degree: the bachelor’s hood is three feet long, the master’s three and a half, and the doctor’s four feet. College trustees at NSCC wear a specially designated trustee’s gown symbolizing their status.

The Procession

The academic procession of Commencement is made up of three divisions. This year, the first division will be candidates for degrees. The second division will be members of the college faculty and professional staff and the third division will be the President of the College, Commencement Speaker, Student Speaker, Student Soloist, recipient of the Distinguished Alumns Award, Board of Trustees, and other dignitaries. The entire company is led by the Grand Marshal bearing a mace, originally a weapon of defense, and a centuries-old symbol of academic authority. A college or university commencement symbolizes the induction of the graduates into the guild of scholars whose tradition reaches back through the centuries of Western Civilization to include all those who have sought learning. Graduates, their families, and their friends can take pride in participating in such an ancient and honorable rite.

Graduation The colors of commencement flow Into an awesome afterglow, And brush with wondrous memory This segment of eternity. Jean Hodgin, Professor Emerita
