ith this catalog, comes the hope and promise of warm weather. By the time the new summer schedule arrives in your mailbox, the mountains of snow will have melted and spring will be well under way. Forgotten will be the doldrums of winter, and all of us will be looking for ways to invigorate ourselves intellectually and physically. It’s time to shake off the long winter by registering for a class at North Shore Community College. There are so many choices—carry this catalog with you to your front porch or back deck, pull up a chair and spend some time looking through your options. If you really would like to learn how to create a website, now is the time to do so. We are offering a revamped version of Wordpress and a new course in creating web sites that will ease the process for you. And we have a new offering in our personal services area—if you would like to learn how to be an aesthetician, register for our Aesthetics summer course taking place at the PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY Cummings Center in Beverly.

The Adult Learning Center Creating Opportunities for Education and Career Exploration High School Equivalency Test Do you need your high school diploma and are at least 16 years old? The new High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) (formerly the GED) incorporates college, technology and career readiness into the classroom, along with advising to assist with next steps after graduation. You must be able to commit to three morning classes each week.

Adult Career Pathways New this year, the Adult Learning Center offers Adult Career Pathways, an afternoon program to explore Health Care careers. To be eligible, you must be at least 16 and able to commit to three afternoon classes each week. Even if you already have your high school diploma or equivalent you can participate. The classes are held at both the Beverly Cummings Center and Lynn campuses.

Average hourly rate: Varies by experience and range of services offered $11-$20.

Outlook: As the population grows, the demand for skin care specialists should increase. Strong competition is expected in elite salons where the pay is higher.

Program is approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Cosmetology. Students must complete a total of 300 clock hours to be eligible to take the Massachusetts Aesthetics Licensure Examination.

AMA (American Management Association) (XCM) • Students must complete any SIX AMA courses to earn a certificate • Courses vary each semester and are eligible for 1.5 to 2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Basic Culinary Arts Certificate (XCR) Major employers: Restaurants and delis, schools, nursing and residential care facilities, hospitals, bars, bakers, fast food cooks, cafeteria workers.

Average hourly rate: Based on experience, restaurant chefs earn between $12 and $24 per hour. Institution and cafeteria cooks earn between $11 and $17 per hour.

Outlook: Growth spurred by increases in population, household income, and leisure time.

Students interested in participating in an academic program that involves working with children, the disabled, or the elderly, or which includes a clinical affiliation, internship, or field placement with a private or public healthcare provider, may be required to undergo criminal background checks, including a national as well as local check (i.e. Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Record Information (SORI)). Caring for People with Alzheimer’s: Habilitation Training

Habilitation Therapy is a method used to best care for and positively enhance the quality of life for those who have dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease.

Learn about ways in which you can promote positive emotions in those you care for we well as simple ways to maximize their strengths and abilities, while minimizing their limitations. Learn how a well-planned environment can promote independence and help the thinking of a person with dementia, and how using good communication skills can help to decrease or even eliminate distressing behaviors or other problems. This course is helpful to those working in the healthcare field as well for those caring for family members at home.

Outlook: Population growth and increasing trend for people to keep the natural teeth will fuel the demand for dental services.

Learn all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting including the professional skills required to function as an assistant in a dental practice. Administrative aspects include: the history of dentistry and dental assisting, introduction to the dental office, the legal aspects of dentistry, policies and guidelines. Clinical topics include: introduction to oral anatomy, dental operatory, dental equipment, introduction to tooth structure, primary and permanent teeth, the oral cavity and related structures, proper patient positioning, dental hand-pieces, sterilization, and other areas. Aesthetics Basic Aesthetics

A 300 clock-hour program approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Cosmetology. Designed to give students a fundamental knowledge of, and practice with the products, electric equipment, and techniques used on clients in the aesthetics industry. Students will have hands-on training in skin care, facial massage, facial and body waxing, and makeup application. Students will learn physiology, histology and anatomy of the skin, including skin diseases and disorders, cosmetic chemistry and ingredient analysis, sterilization, sanitation, and bacteriology. Students will work on clients in a clinical environment to practice these treatments and procedures while learning about professional ethics, business opportunities, record keeping, and sales aspects of the aesthetics and spa industry. Students will be prepared to take the Massachusetts Aesthetics License Examination after completion of the 300 hour course. Immunization record must be completed and submitted first week of class. Step 1: Check the Online Schedule of Classes • From the NSCC home page (www.northshore.edu), search for the noncredit classes you want to take.

• Write down the 5-digit CRN (course reference number) and the cost of each class.

• If using the Noncredit Mailer, check online for any class updates such as date or time changes, cancellations, or new courses added.

Step 2: Activate Your Campus Pipeline Account • If you have already activated your pipeline account, you can go to Step 3.

• Go to www.northshore.edu and click on the Campus Pipeline link.

• Click on Setup Your Account. You will be asked to verify your name, SSN, and date of birth. You will be given a username and assign yourself a password.

Write this down in a safe place.

• Once you have activated your account, go to Step 3.

Step 3: Log Into Campus Pipeline • Go to the Campus Pipeline login screen and login using your Username and Password created in Step 2.

• Click on the School Services tab.

• Click on Student Services, Registration, & Financial Aid. • Click on Registration, then on Add/Drop Classes.

• Use the dropdown list to select the term you want, and click on Submit.

• Scroll to the bottom of the next screen to “Add Classes Worksheet”.

• Enter the CRNs for the classes you want, and click on Submit Changes.

• Scroll down to “Current Schedule” to make sure the classes you registered for are listed with status of “Web Registered”.

• If a class is full, the Status will say “Closed”.

• When finished registering for all desired classes, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on Complete Your Registration to view your Registration Fee Assessment, which will list the total amount you owe.

• Scroll to the bottom and click on Credit Card Payment, and enter your credit card information and the amount of the payment.

• Once you submit your payment, you will be able to print out your schedule.

You are now registered for the selected courses. You will not receive a confirmation in the mail; please print out your schedule once you complete your registration. If you are unable to register online, view the Pipeline FAQs on the login page.

Personal Fitness Trainer Certification

Employers like 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness and Gold’s Gyms are just a few of the club groups that seek out our graduates. Star Gazing – What’s Out There?

• Withdraw before the second class meeting: Total Refund • Withdrawal after the second class meeting: No Refund To withdraw from a one or two meeting activity, you must contact Corporate and Community Education in writing or by phone at least 72 hours before the activity begins if you wish a tuition refund.

Tuition Waivers Students with approved tuition waivers, tuition remission, or tuition vouchers may register at any time. Tuition waivers, tuition remission, or tuition vouchers do not apply to special programs, seminars, or online courses. (Massachusetts Employee Waivers are not eligible for Healthcare courses or Personal Trainer). Individuals will be placed in the class on a space available basis, no sooner than five business days before the start of the course. In the event that

the class is cancelled, the employee has the option to resubmit for the next scheduled class. For all courses offered, student registrations must meet the cost of delivering the course before any waivers will be honored. Individuals with tuition waivers will be responsible for the cost of all materials and/or books even when materials are included in tuition.

Policies

Information Subject to Change. The college reserves the right to add or delete courses and programs or to revise tuition, fees, and insurance requirements to allow for unforeseen developments. The college cannot guarantee that the instructor whose name is printed by the course will teach that course.

Nonpayment. Failure to pay your account balance in full on or before the 1st day of the class may result in your losing your seat in the class. If you have a 3rd party sponsor they must provide a valid billing authorization or purchase order on or before the 1st day of the class. NSCC reserves the right to charge you a $50 late fee for any past due account balances.

Course Cancellation. Individual courses may be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. NSCC makes every effort to notify students by phone and/or mail as soon as the decision is made. Noncredit courses are generally cancelled one week prior to start date. Students may choose another course or receive a refund.

The website contains information on campus security and personal safety, including crime prevention, college police law-enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, and other important matters about security on campus. It also contains statistics

for the three previous calendar years on reported crimes that occurred on campus and certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by North Shore Community College, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. This information is required by law and provided by the Campus Police Department.

Parking. Parking permits are available from the Campus Police Officer on duty at the Lynn and Danvers campuses. Free parking for students is provided within the white lined spaces.
