FALL 2007

NSCC is Going Greener! NSCC has long been committed to clean and green environmental concepts. According to Richard Reney, NSCC’s Director of Facilities, paper recycling, sensor lights, environmentally friendly products and carpeting, ink cartridge recycling, mercury reduction, electric grounds carts, hybrid pickup trucks — even a rainwater harvesting system — are just some of NSCC’s sustainability measures. “NSCC is actually ahead of the curve compared to other schools,” Reney said. But now that President Wayne Burton has become the 100th college president to sign the American Colleges & University President’s Climate Commitment, pledging to take a leadership role in fighting global warming, NSCC is going even greener. But it’s the educational component mission to teach students to “think green” that’s expected to have the most longlasting and far-reaching effects on our environment. Launching this Fall semester, NSCC’s college-wide Green Curriculum Project will improve NSCC’s ecological literacy by providing resources and assistance Rick Reney, NSCC’s Director of Facilities (in earth-friendly electric to faculty who will, in turn, integrate grounds cart) and President Wayne Burton at the Danvers Campus. sustainability issues and environmental concepts into their courses, everything help slow global warming and preserve our natural enfrom science, social studies and business administration vironment.” to community education and youth programs. Alumni Careers

Keeping Us Safe Three Danvers Department of Public Health employees have more than their job location in common — they’re also closely connected with NSCC. The three are: Jean Marcotti, DPH Animal Health Specialist, currently studying Animal Science at NSCC (education she can bring back to DPH), Mark Carleo, ’03 graduate of NSCC’s Food Science & Technology program, now a DPH Health Inspector, and Peter Mirandi, DPH Director. Peter has the longest relationship with NSCC. In the beginning, after two years in the US Coast Guard, Peter chose NSCC to further his education simply because of its close proximity to his home in Beverly. But his choice turned out to have long-standing implications for his selfesteem, ability to succeed academically, and personal direction, he says. After earning an Associate Degree in Public and Environmental Health Technology at NSCC in 1974, Peter went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health.

Peter knows a lot about opportunities in fields like his for NSCC students. Last year he worked with NSCC’s Nurse Education Program when the DPH provided annual flu shots at NSCC’s Danvers campus. And the Disaster Preparedness Plan for the town of Danvers includes collaboration with NSCC’s Nursing Program. Plus, he’s an adjunct faculty member in NSCC’s Business program and teaches Food Safety and Personnel Management. Peter would like us to know that there are ample job opportunities in his field, particularly those with clinical skills in the areas of food safety and animal

NSCC-connected Danvers Department of Public Health officials are: (l-r) Jean Marcotti, Animal Health Specialist and current NSCC student, Mark Carleo `03, Danvers Public Health Inspector, and Peter Mirandi `74, Director.

Peter would like us to know that there are ample opportunities for students in his field, particularly those with clinical skills in the areas of food safety and Animal Science programs.

After 10 years with the US Department of Commerce in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, he landed at the Danvers DPH where he’s worked for 18 years in a broad spectrum of areas – everything from the control, investigation, and prevention of infectious diseases to food safety inspections of area restaurants and supermarkets. He also holds a Governor-appointed position on the Board of Registered Sanitarians and is a Commissioner on the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control Board.

science. Animal-related concerns range from rodent and pest control to animal control of domestic animals and wildlife, and wildlife-related illnesses such as rabies. A serious concern in the summer months, he said, are mosquitoes and ticks and the diseases that they carry, including the #1 infectious disease in Danvers — Lyme Disease.

NSCC Grads Wanted From the control, investigation, and prevention of infectious diseases to food safety inspections of the numerous restaurants and supermarkets in the area, there are many areas that fall under the supervision or work with the Department of Public Health. The Danvers DPH can train and supervise students and graduates with Food Safety knowledge to assist in these areas. The DPH also monitors general public safety concerns and field issues related to schools and tobacco control issues, trash collection, water supply and sewerage, housing issues, public swimming pools, hotels and tanning salons. Peter encourages alumni to pass the word along to anyone who might be interested in his field.

Alumni Profile From NSCC Criminal Justice Program to Community Services Deputy Director Menorca Collazo ’98, graduate of NSCC’s Criminal Justice program, today is Deputy Director of Services for Georgia Mountains Community Services where she advocates, as always, for people with mental health, developmental disabilities, addictive diseases, and similar life challenges. Menorca worked full time while going to school full time, eventually completing a Master’s degree in Special Education Counseling at Salem State College. Along the way, she interned as an Associate Probation Officer at Salem Superior Court, then worked in a supported employment program as an Employment and Education Coordinator while earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology at Salem State College. She also worked as a Bilingual Human Service Supervisor at the Department of Mental Retardation area office, managing Family Support Services and funding and supervising Multicultural and Bilingual Services, Deaf Services, Children Services and the Turning 22 Services. As if that weren’t enough, she led regional diversity trainings and acted as a Human Rights Officer for the Department of Mental Health. And she worked as an Accessibility Coordinator to ensure accessibility and employment opportunities to North Shore area career centers for people with disabilities. Menorca said she chose NSCC to begin her higher education journey because of its educational philosophy and programs tailored to adult students. She says that NSCC “maximized my individual learning potential by promoting academic excellence.” Her fondest campus memories are of the “inspiration and motivation” she received from NSCC professors. Now relocated to Georgia, Menorca is celebrating her recent engagement and looking forward to a May ’08 wedding. Congratulations Menorca!

NSCC Distinguished Alumnus Award Winner

Kelley Cox ’78, American Airlines 9/11 Base Manager After graduating from NSCC in 1978, Kelley Cox, a Lynn native, went on to Salem State College before taking off on a 24-year career at American Airlines. Kelley took on a variety of roles, responsibilities, and home base assignments at American Airlines, eventually becoming base manager for flight service at Boston’s Logan Airport. She trained in disaster preparedness and also served on the board of a national organization that assisted people in life altering disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the UK underground bombings, providing family assistance and operational support to responding organizations. But it was on September 11, 2001, that our Distinguished Alum was faced with the personal and professional challenge of working as American Airlines base manager, leading the local response to the events of 9/11. Kelley personally handled the heartbreaking job of employee and crew member family notification and led the company efforts for

many other aspects of the crisis. Our 2007 Distinguished Alumnus Award winner effectively led over 1,200 employees during the most demanding and challenging times in airline history. One senior airline executive who worked closely with her during the events of 9/11 said, “Kelley’s unique ability is to perform at the highest level possible in the most trying of circumstances and under intense pressure. Kelley did what had to be done without extra resources for a number of days. She remained
