From the President I am so pleased to share this report with you to let you know about some of the exciting things that are happening at North Shore Community College. And, to express my sincere gratitude to you, our faithful supporters, for all you do to ensure the robust viability of the college. North Shore Community College is a wonderful school, and I am very honored to be its President. In my first three years here we have made significant progress and have much of which to be proud. We celebrated the College’s 50th anniversary, created a new five-year strategic plan, entered the quiet phase of North Shore ADVANCING — a major gift and scholarship campaign, added a new wing to our Lynn Campus McGee building, and launched CommUniverCity at Lynn — a birth to career workforce development initiative. Yet there is always more to do and many exciting challenges lie ahead. I thank our faculty, staff, and students who inspire us, our Trustees, business, legislative and community partners who work alongside us, and the friends and supporters who sustain us with their gifts of time, talent and resources. This year North Shore Community College completed a fiveyear Strategic Plan, North Shore ADVANCING: A Vision for the Future, 2017-2021. Faculty, staff, students, Trustees, and external partners engaged for over a year in strategic planning that builds on the College’s accomplishments, analyzes internal and external influences, and charts a course for the future.

With a foundation based on updated Mission, Vision and Values, the Strategic Plan frames NSCC’s historic purpose while bringing the College into its next half century. The Strategic Plan identifies four essential directions — Academics, Access, Achievement, and Affordability — that will guide the College over the next several years. With specific strategies for each direction, the College moves into the future as a strong, innovative, and collaborative leader focusing intently on the needs of the students of today and the economy of tomorrow.

Students who start at NSCC can go anywhere. Augustina Egbuiwe received an NSCC Alumni Scholarship to transfer to Brandeis University to continue her nursing training. NSCC students have transferred to colleges and universities nationwide, taking advantage of great cost savings in achieving their bachelor’s degree. NSCC has a strong engineering program where faculty with real-world experience work closely with students to demonstrate core principles and new trends.

NSCC’s Danvers Campus hosts the Health Professions and Student Services building, the first Zero-Net Energy public building in the Commonwealth. The building is filled with state-of-the-art equipment, as good as or better than what can be found in area health care facilities, so that students studying nursing, radiologic or surgical technology, and other allied health fields are learning on the same high tech equipment they will use in the workplace. New Developments CommUniverCity Reflective of the Massachusetts Vision Project North Shore Community College continues to attract and enroll underserved populations and includes best practices to ensure steady progress in their retention and completion in certificate and degree programs. As part of its mission, NSCC is a leader in civic engagement through service learning, develops co-curricular programs and activities encouraging students to invest time in the community, and works closely with employers, community organizations, and other colleges to expand collaborative partnerships.

NORTH SHORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The CommUniverCity at Lynn is an urban education -workforce development collaboration involving NSCC, Lynn Public Schools, Salem State University (for bachelor degree completion programs at NSCC Lynn’s Campus), the City of Lynn, Lynn Community Health Center (providing access to comprehensive health services for NSCC students), and the North Shore Workforce Investment Board (bringing career services to the NSCC Campus). These organizations, in tandem, build seamless pathways in public education from Pre-K all the way through to gainful employment. Massachusetts Senator Thomas M. McGee is also a supportive leader of the initiative. The goal of this initiative is ambitious: with all Lynn residents to be educated, economically secure, and engaged in their community by the end of the next decade.

The CommUniverCity at Lynn has already produced positive outcomes. With the Lynn Public School partnership, NSCC has implemented a vigorous Early College program that provides students the opportunity to earn up to 30 college credits tuition free in various academic pathways prior to high school graduation, which cuts time and cost to achieving industry credentials and degrees from NSCC and partner Salem State University. Curriculum and pathway development is guided by area employers and in collaboration with faculty from the high schools, NSCC, and SSU. Through innovative strategies like CommUniverCity at Lynn and others, North Shore Community College seeks to create a future in which the College continues to be the beacon of hope and opportunity for those who learn, live, and work on the Massachusetts’ North Shore.

••• EARLY COLLEGE NSCC Early College is an exciting program that allows qualified high school students, as early as age 15, to earn college credit while completing high school graduation requirements. To reach promising students in underserved North Shore communities, NSCC also partners with area public school districts to offer its Early College program tuition free. Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 30 college credits free-of-charge, saving them as much as one year of college tuition. NSCC currently has early college agreements with Lynn and Swampscott Public Schools and Essex Technical High School.

Expert faculty and staff are a mainstay at NSCC, many of them holding doctorates. Student surveys continually give faculty high marks for their commitment to students. Early College classes better prepare students for college, saves significant dollars on courses, cuts down on the amount of time to get a degree and positions students more advantageously for success.

By completing the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at North Shore Community College, Massachusetts-based students save thousands of dollars upon transfer to a public college or university. Over 65% of NSCC students are the first in their families to attend college.

• Named one of the top 25 community colleges nationally advancing low-income students by the U.S. Department of Education • Overall measures of student success, including the “Achieving the Dream” success rate, and the Voluntary Framework of Accountability success measure; • Degree production in high-demand health fields; • Semester-to-semester student retention; • Student success in developmental English; • Our embrace of key performance indicators to measure and track performance. North Shore Community College has embraced The Commonwealth Commitment, a new state initiative that will make getting a public bachelor’s degree even more affordable. This new program calls for every public campus in the state to provide 10 percent rebates at the end of each successfully completed semester to qualifying undergraduates who pursue an associate degree at a community college and move on to a bachelor’s degree program at a state university. Students who meet program requirements will, depending on the transfer pathway they choose, save an average of $5,090 off the cost of a bachelor’s degree.

ECONOMIC IMPACT North Shore Community College has generated more than $49 million in economic impact for the North Shore.

North Shore Community College provides tangible benefits to the Commonwealth’s economy and area employers: • We are the area’s leading producer of nurses and health care professionals, first responders, and early childhood educators. • We lead the market in providing regional businesses with excellent customized training for incumbent and new workers. • NSCC graduates become successful contributors to the local economy and quality of life in our communities. Over 92% of our graduates stay to live, work and raise families in Essex County. • Civic engagement and service learning are embedded in many of our courses, programs, and campus initiatives.

NSCC’s Veterinary Technology program is unique in the Commonwealth. The new facilities include an animal surgical area, grooming area, kennels and outside runs, as well as fully equipped classrooms where hands-on learning takes place.

Part of the strength of NSCC’s academic programs are the partnerships that the College has with businesses and community organizations to augment classroom learning with clinical placements, internships, community service and civic engagement and more. Arthur Bowes from the North Shore Medical Center both utilizes students in learning situations and hires NSCC graduates.

NSCC faculty and staff continuously engage in professional development to enhance their skills and keep on top of emerging trends. Russell Green, Associate Professor, Communications Skills is a recent graduate of The Chair Academy which trains educators on effective leadership.

Student-to-teacher ratios are low at NSCC, where students get the individualized attention they need, with plenty of class and lab time to debate, question and share perspectives. In addition, tutoring and advising services are available to keep students moving forward successfully.

Deena DiIorio ’16 hopes to turn her passion for helping others into a physical therapy career where she can specialize in working with veterans and others with traumatic brain injuries. A certified nursing assistant since age 16, Deena worked full-time in pediatrics at Beverly Hospital while also taking a full-time course load as a student in NSCC’s health science program. Deena was one of those students who was not eligible for financial aid but could not afford to pay for college. Receiving the NSCC Trustee Scholarship made a huge difference for her. Deena is continuing her education at Salem State University where she hopes to earn a bachelor’s degree in Sport and Movement Science, and then continue to get a doctorate in physical therapy.

experience at North Shore Community College resulted in a full scholarship to Amherst College for Sean Reid ’15 of Lynn. A first generation college student, Sean earned a 4.0 grade point average, was student representative on the NSCC Board of Trustees, a member of NSCC’s Student Government Association, president of the Economics and Finance Club and participated as co-chair of the annual Federal Reserve Bank Challenge. “My time at NSCC was life-changing. If you put the effort in at NSCC, it will come back to you twofold. I want to encourage current and potential students to take advantage of all that NSCC has to offer so they can have an experience like mine,” he said.

College was nothing short of transformational for Nathaniel Montero ’16. NSCC was the only college where he was accepted and he walked through its doors determined to change his life. He joined the TRIO program for first generation college students where he found the support he needed to excel. Majoring in business administration, he made the Honors program, became vice president of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and was a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success. In addition, he developed into a true student leader, serving as president of the NSCC Student Government Association, president of the Program Council and ultimately, student Commencement speaker at the College’s 50th graduation.

North Shore Community College students represent the diversity of the region. They include recent high school graduates, mid-life career changers and late bloomers finally chasing long held dreams of attending college. Almost half of our students need financial support to attend NSCC and 41 percent work full-time while attending school. Thirty percent also care for a dependent while a quarter are nonnative English speakers, and many are the first in their families to attend college. Forty-one percent of NSCC students describe themselves as having been academically underprepared. Regardless of circumstances, North Shore Community College meets all our students where they are and guides them on their journey to achieve their goals. We offer caring, committed faculty, trained advising staff who can connect education to actual careers, academic counseling to keep students on track, and accommodations for specialized needs and populations — like veterans, immigrants or students with learning disabilities. For those with financial need, scholarships are available through the NSCC Foundation. Grants and student loans are available through Student Financial Services.

The NSCC Foundation Scholarship Program empowers students to pursue and achieve their educational goals. Thanks to donations from individuals, companies and foundations, the NSCC Foundation has awarded over $3 million in scholarships to more than 3,600 NSCC students, since its inception in 1985. Recipients are selected on a competitive basis by a Scholarship Committee, in consideration of both academic and non-academic factors and demonstrated need.

COMMITMENT TO STUDENT SUCCESS In addition to academics, the College offers a Student Life program with a wide variety of opportunities for student involvement, engagement and development. Student Life enhances, supports and strengthens the learning experience that takes place in the classroom. Students have the opportunity to develop personal, organizational and civic leadership skills, and to create meaningful lasting memories through their participation in clubs, organizations and a variety of community service projects.

Dr. Cristy Sugarman, Director of Alternative Studies/ Educational Testing in the Center for Alternative Studies, is a graduate of the CHAIR Academy, an international leadership development program for higher education institutions. NSCC Student Trustee and Veteran Jesse Perkins was honored to be chosen as NSCC’s representative at Community College Day at Fenway Park this fall. Look who he ran into . . . Wally! NSCC has a very strong veterans program with nearly 300 student veterans enrolled.

Commencement is the much anticipated celebratory culmination of the academic year, when students are so excited and proud to graduate. This year’s graduation, the college’s 50th, featured an all-time high number of graduates, 1,160.

Designated a Military Friendly School since 2010, NSCC’s Veterans Services provides support and resources to hundreds of veteran and active duty students each year.

NSCC’s unique partnership with Uber fills a transportation gap for students traveling to the Danvers Campus. Since its launch in September 2016, students have taken more than 250 reducedfare trips to attend classes.

Lynn Expansion Better Spaces for Students The need for more and better space at North Shore Community College’s Lynn Campus has been growing since shortly after the building opened in 1986. Student enrollment at the existing McGee Building, constructed for a capacity of 1,000 students, was 5,000 in 2001 and over 7,000 by 2010. Growth continues at this campus at around 2 percent per year, far outstripping the capacity of the existing building. A recent

facility study of the Lynn Campus by Sasaki & Associates concluded that development of the campus is essential to accommodate academic and workforce needs. A phased-in approach has been developed that will add much needed classroom and student services space in a new wing at the McGee Building, renovation of the existing building to accommodate current and future program needs, as well as construction of a future lab building and an Early Childhood Education Laboratory Center.

1965 NSCC is founded as the ninth community college in the state and opens in Beverly with 474 students.

Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation From scholarship awards to programmatic grants and capital campaign support, Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation is one of North Shore Community College’s greatest champions in supporting student success. Since 1984 Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation has awarded more than $280,000 to benefit the College. “A gift to North Shore Community College Foundation is especially useful in the sense it can be directed to where it is needed most,” said Richard Holbrook, retiring Chairman and CEO of Eastern Bank. Most recently, Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation awarded a Targeted Program grant of $10,000 to fund the expansion of NSCC’s successful Occupational Therapy pilot program serving veterans and family members at our Lynn Campus.

Stephen T. Vesey Stephen T. Vesey serves as President of the North Shore Community College Foundation. He leads a dedicated Board of Directors comprised of business, community and philanthropic leaders from across the North Shore who champion the need for accessible and affordable higher education. Steve’s greatest passion as President is the NSCC Scholarship Program. Nine years ago, Steve and his wife, Michele, established the Michele Vesey Scholarship to support NSCC students who are single mothers pursuing nursing degrees. To ensure the legacy of this scholarship for NSCC nursing students, Steve and Michele made a commitment in 2016 to endow this scholarship with a generous gift of $25,000 to the NSCC Foundation.

VERIZON FOUNDATION GRANT Grant funding from the Verizon Foundation supports NSCC’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs for Lynn students. A $10,000 gift in 2015 provided funding to support events to enhance STEM degree program enrollment and completion. A $10,000 grant in 2016 will help to fund NSCC’s Early College IT Pathway for Lynn public high school students.

While driving near her California home, Avery was inspired by an NPR news story she heard featuring NSCC’s TRIO program for first generation, low-income college students. The story awoke Avery’s long held dream to give back through a college scholarship. As she explored options at nearby colleges, she didn’t find the personal touch she wanted, so she contacted NSCC. She remembers the staff member at the College saying, “If I were there, I would hug you!” “That’s when I knew NSCC was where I was meant to be,” says Avery. Avery and her husband, Adam Lapidus, established the Irving Adler Memorial Scholarship in 2015 in honor of her grandfather, an influential educator and writer. Beginning in 2017, two students will be selected from NSCC’s Early College Program at Lynn Public Schools to receive a $1,000 scholarship each year for up to three years. 22

Anh Dao TranMoseman ’88 Anh Dao came to the U.S. at age 19 as a refugee from Vietnam with her family. Her mother and five siblings spoke limited English, and her father, a prisoner of war, remained behind. Today, the family is reunited and the Tran siblings are successful citizens, earning advanced degrees in engineering and health professions. Anh Dao has a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry, and her children are pursuing college degrees. Anh Dao established two scholarships with the NSCC Foundation in 2014. “I became a scholarship donor because I remember how difficult it was for my mom, my siblings and me to pursue our new life and a good education in America.”

Lisa Milso

When Lisa Milso, NSCC’s Director of Student Life, passed away suddenly on Christmas Eve 2015, she left a huge void in the College community. Lisa loved NSCC and our students, and she proudly served the College for over 28 years, personally touching the lives of countless students and alumni. She is deeply missed. Lisa’s care and concern for people continued even after her passing — she donated her organs to seven others so that they could live on. NSCC is honored to join with Lisa’s family, friends and the College community to carry on Lisa’s legacy of caring. Through the NSCC Foundation, the Lisa Milso Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2016, providing scholarships to NSCC students. A college-wide “Day of Kindness” was also held in her memory on May 19, 2016, encouraging the community to share a smile, lend a hand, and pay it forward as Lisa did each and every day.

Binkley Shorts When Binkley Shorts heard that the number of student veterans at NSCC was growing, Binkley, a Vietnam veteran, took a special interest in helping to create a welcoming space that would support veteran students pursuing their education. Thanks in large part to a generous gift from Binkley and his wife Paula, NSCC relocated its Veterans Center in 2013 within its Danvers Campus to a larger, centralized location complete with meeting and office space, computer workstations, a greeter’s station, and space for veteran students to socialize and relax amongst peers who share similar experiences as they navigate college and civilian life. A BRIEF HISTORY Established in 1965, North Shore Community College (NSCC) is one of the oldest of the 15 community colleges in Massachusetts. Operating from campuses in Danvers, Lynn and Middleton, we serve 26 cities and towns from north metropolitan Boston to Cape Ann. Since its founding in 1965, NSCC has grown from a single building to three campuses, and from five to over 80 academic programs. NSCC has touched the lives of more than a quarter million residents on the North Shore in its first half-century of service. NSCC delivers post-secondary education to more than 10,500 credit students in an academic year, and an additional 4,000 noncredit students. The College also provides lifelong learning opportunities to area residents through workforce development training. NSCC is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) through its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education.
