IT HAS BEEN QUITE A JOURNEY

I continue to be amazed at the resilience and creativity of our students, faculty, staff, administrators and parents. None of this has been easy, but the professionalism and optimism of this group should warm the hearts of Raiders near and far. As usual, we have a picture from upper school Commencement on the cover of the fall Acorn. Commencement is an iconic moment for every class and the official ending of every academic year. Someday, the covers of the Acorn for this era will be prominent primary documents of our slow but steady emergence from the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 cover showed a festive “parking lot” scene of the drive-in ceremony that provided a bright spot during that COVID spring. This cover ref lects the outdoor graduation in family pods last June, a big step in the right direction to be sure, but not quite “normal,” whatever that really is anymore. With any luck, the 2022 graduation cover will have us all sitting together like before, either outdoors or back in the auditorium. Yes, it has been quite a journey, but as you can see in the pages of this magazine, the NSCD community has endured and overcome in so many ways. As I write, we just received vaccination approval for ages 5-11. We can glimpse a day in the near future where saliva tests and masks won’t distract from the everyday rhythms of school life. 1 Closing Morning Ex 2 Middle School Graduation 3 Lower School Closing 4 Take 10! Yet we are back in school all-day every day, and as you can see through these pages, students are busy learning. As I’ve written before over the past two years, we continue to adapt to the changing circumstances around us. I continue to be amazed at the resilience and creativity of our students, faculty, staff, administrators and parents. None of this has been easy, but the professionalism and optimism of this group should warm the hearts of Raiders near and far. Yes, classrooms change and techniques evolve, but the core tasks of teaching and learning proceed all around us, all over campus. With the explosion of new technology tools and skills, we’ve been able to bring the world into school like never before and reach folks we couldn’t before. It’s an odd paradox: Our physical lives are proscribed in so many ways by the pandemic, but our reach has never been broader. Through it all we are extremely fortunate to be together here in school. In-person classes and athletics and activities have been a tangible benefit to our students as they navigate the difficulties of the pandemic. We adults need that connection too—we all got into teaching for a reason and it wasn’t to sit on a screen! NSCD has always valued community and connection. Being able to prioritize both even through the hardest weeks has been a gift to all of us on campus. And in many ways it has been your gifts that have helped to make that happen. The other traditional part of the fall Acorn is

10

the annual report, a recognition and thank you to all who have supported our school financially in the previous year. It is hard not to be amazed at the breadth and depth of the support that sustains us—quite literally—every year. From current parents to alumni from the Class of 1940 and everyone in between, our supporters are steadfast and true. All that you see in these pages and online and in mailings is possible because friends around the world support our students, faculty and staff. Together, you all make this wonderful place what it is. —Tom Flemma, Head of School

“As we go into this new phase of our lives, I hope you’ll choose to take your memories of North Shore with you— both good and bad. Relive mistakes, relive relationships, relive those stressful moments. orth Shore Country Day held its second pandemic Commencement on June 11, 2021. But as the sun set over the playing fields and the Class of 2021 walked across the stage for the final time, with the school’s iconic auditorium as a backdrop, it felt a little closer to normal. Instead of a drive-in style ceremony like the one in 2020, students were able to sit together on the field, while parents and other friends and family members sat in socially distanced pods behind them. Aside from the outdoor location, the program itself mirrored a typical NSCD Commencement. “We worked hard to retain many of the traditions of a North Shore graduation even as we had to re-envision this ceremony once again,” explained Head of School Tom Flemma, as he addressed the audience. “For you, that means the familiar speakers and rhythm of the events, and for me that means the jacket that I’m wearing.” Tom went on to tell the story of how his father died when he was 18, and how he inherited his large collection of colorful

jackets. Every year, he chooses one to wear to Commencement, to honor his dad and ref lect on the role he played in his life. “We’ve all had our lives upended this year, some more than others,” he said. “My hope is that for all of you this ceremony helps restore some of the natural rhythm of things, and helps you ref lect on the role that family and friends and North Shore play in your lives.” Lola Adebiyi ’21 was selected to deliver the senior message. She talked about how each and every one of the 50 members of the Class of 2021 was a vital addition to the NSCD community. “Our class would not be the same without you,” she said. “Each of you made a suggestion in class that no one else would have thought of. Each of you brought your own unique vibe to every field trip and class gathering. Each of you brought a little joy to at least one person throughout your high school experience, whether that was a friend or teacher or parent or anyone else. No matter what you think, the halls will be very different next year because you will no longer be there.”

She recalled specific memories with every single graduate, and closed her speech with a moving performance of “Somewhere,” from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. Former Upper School Social Studies Teacher Brian Sarfo, who was a teaching fellow in the University of Pennsylvania Independent School Teaching Residency program, returned to campus to address the graduates. He challenged them to push themselves, take risks and find courage. “You all are the future of this city, this state, this country, and you owe it to North Shore—but even more so to yourselves—to recognize when you will need to channel and f lex your courage and do more so that you don’t atrophy,” he said. “I challenge you all to maintain the relationships that you have cultivated here at North Shore. You all have a duty to one another to sustain them for a lifetime because you all WILL cross paths again. Never forget that North Shore is here for you—you are a part of a family and rest assured that family will not abandon you no matter what.”

B O R N I N M A D R I D   |   M A D E I N C H I CAG O   |   N S C D L I F E R

Nico Gibson was just 4 years old when he and his mother moved from Madrid to Illinois in 1992. Amid settling into a new country, culture, home and language, she knew it was important to find a school where he would be supported and thrive. North Shore Country Day was the answer. “The teachers were so welcoming and understanding,” said Nico. “They even paired me with a senior buddy who was an exchange student from Spain!” Today, Nico is a designer with 10-plus years of studio and agency experience, living in Glenview with his wife Montse Lusaretta and their 3-year-old daughter, Mila. He is the founder and design director of the creative collaborative CRCL, a senior brand designer at IDEO and design director at Beyond Athlete Management. He describes his work as “rooted in music, fashion and sport. He believes in wearing his kicks, in the hustle and in not taking anything too seriously.” NSCD is lucky to also call Nico a Lifer—Class of 2006—and a Raider. In the spring of 2021, the school asked for his help in creating a new Raiders logo. North Shore adopted the Raiders as their mascot in 1945 but the logo and previous pirate imagery didn’t appear in the school archives until the 1980s, and it has only been revised twice since then. When

the school refreshed its branding in 2020, it was time to revisit the Raider as well. Focus groups with students and alumni clarified the goals. Nico’s instincts were a big advantage over working with an outside firm. He knew what it felt like to be a Raider from the years he spent representing NSCD on the basketball and tennis courts. And as an accomplished graphic designer, he had experience developing brands and logos for the sports industry and bigname clients. “This was an opportunity of a lifetime— it was a piece of me and it was for North Shore athletics—I couldn’t say no. Designing the new Raider was my way of giving back to my school.” He also admits feeling very nervous tackling the project. “The hardest thing is to design for yourself. In a lot of ways, NSCD is an extension of me—half my life was spent at North Shore. I know I will never design anything that will equate to that. “The design had to be right for the community, and I had to love it. I knew what would resonate and I wanted to elevate the Raider to be more than just a logo.” The new Raider had to be simple, modern, inclusive—gender and racially neutral, bold, reductive and fast. “I also wanted to bring a sense of belonging for

all NSCD students,” Nico explained. “The icon had to communicate strength and confidence to help Raider athletes play as good as they look—bringing a little edginess along with a sense of speed and competitiveness. And it had to fit with the new school identity. They are cousins—there’s a blood line between them.” Nico’s interest in art began during the summer between eighth and ninth grade. “I had a really nice relationship with Upper School Art Teacher Arnor Bieltvedt,” Nico said.“He would always leave the art studio open, and it became a community space for me and other students who were interested in art.” Athletic apparel and uniforms were always something that piqued his interest and really kindled his love of visual art, Nico explained. “I would doodle in class instead of taking notes, drawing tennis clothes that Roger Federer wore. I realize now, those were the initial seeds of why I love graphic design rather than fine arts.” Tennis was his favorite and strongest sport growing up. He dreamed of becoming a tennis player and would imagine himself wearing their tennis clothes. As he got older and started to mature, he had visions of working at Nike or a sportswear manufacturer, relishing the mix between sport and design.

“ Put out into the universe what you like to do. Every now and then, it sends incredible opportunities. Hear them out. Over the span of a decade, that approach has given me amazing experiences.”

“I took summer art classes in fashion when I was young,” he recalled. “But it was NSCD that gave me a good foundation, and skills in art and design. I had experiences with pottery, design, painting and more. North Shore also allowed me to tap into my interests. My senior year, I had an independent study focused on fashion and design. I created a clothing brand called Ocin (my name backwards), where I designed and constructed garments, added graphics and even spray painted some of them. “That is one thing I loved about the art department. My teachers didn’t force me down a path but kept me interested broadly so I could make decisions later about what I wanted to do. That enabled me to go as far as I wanted to go and keep reaching.” College was an extension of his North Shore education, and even the campus felt very much like NSCD. “The Saint Louis University art department was a smaller community, and the culture reminded me of the one-on-one teacher relationships I had at NSCD. You had access to professors and all kinds of resources. “I took illustration, painting, sculpture and photography. It was very much like North Shore, allowing me to explore lots of options. I loved typography and magazine design—the colors and layouts.”

Nico says that even though he studied art at SLU, illustration was not his strength. He actually loved photography and found that it strengthened his eye and ability to see compositionally. “For me, it was always about refining my eye.” While in college, he had a side-hustle and “say yes” mentality. “That gave me a lot of opportunities to work with athletes— photographing and helping to brand them. I found a way to scratch my itch outside of the classroom. When I graduated, my portfolio included much more content from my side hustles—concert posters and photos of athletes, artists and rappers.” It was that portfolio that Nico sent when applying for jobs after graduation. Then came a call from Leo Burnett. They were starting a small graphic design department, thought he had a good eye and offered him an internship. “Everything I know today, I learned on that job. I had a thirst for knowledge, and it all clicked when I landed there. What the team was doing was what I had been interested in all along. But it was really, really hard because I didn’t come prepared. I spent my evenings learning what I needed to know. It gave me more of a hunger and thirst to learn. And, it ended up putting me ahead of my peers. I was really fortunate.”

After that it was onward and upward, Nico recalled. He always tried to keep all doors open and always said yes. The No.1 tip he tells others is to “put out into the universe what you like to do. Every now and then, it sends incredible opportunities. Hear them out. Over the span of a decade, that approach has given me amazing experiences.” When Nico was preparing to transition from eighth to ninth grade, he considered switching to Glenbrook North High School. “The main reason I stayed was because NSCD was so welcoming. The teachers allowed students to explore, and they made sure I wouldn’t fall through the cracks,” Nico said. “I worked jobs after school and I had a single parent. The teachers here, like Physics Teacher Erik Skalinder and History Teacher Kevin Randolph, knew me both inside and outside of class. That steps outside traditional education. The balance of exploring, making my own decisions, failing, growing and the one-on-one relationships— that’s North Shore.”

ANNUAL REPORT

a nnua l r eport

Class of 2021 Lifers: Zinzi Steele, Olivia Theodosakis, Rachel Olatunji and Hal Phillips

THANK YOU!

Dear Friends,

As we ref lect on this past year, there is so much to say, but I will stay focused on what North Shore Country Day does best—educate and help students reach their full potential academically and as people who will be our future leaders. I’m honored to work alongside our devoted Head of School Tom Flemma and a dedicated group of faculty and staff, Board of Trustees, parents, alumni and friends of the school who have helped to keep NSCD strong for more than 100 years. In order to deliver the best possible academic, extracurricular and social experience in 2020-2021, the administration and board goals were to enable the maximum in-person experience for students while maintaining a safe environment. In order to achieve our goal, we committed to: • Regular meetings with the Medical Advisory Group made up of parents and alumni with medical and scientific expertise to help guide us through the challenges of a pandemic. • Support our teachers (always committed to more than just academic obligations by serving as coaches, advisors, mentors, directors, audience members at music and theater productions, athletic events, and many other supportive roles for our students) who took on additional professional development and learned new technology needed to deliver high-quality remote learning. • Work with and THANK our generous and loyal donors, and our enthusiastic volunteers who collectively ensured that we achieved and exceeded our fundraising goals, thereby enabling NSCD to manage the increased costs of safety and testing protocols, and classroom and teaching space modifications; to support our day-to-day operational needs; and to boost our endowment for both the immediate and long-term strength of the school. • Follow the Strategic Plan as our guiding light to advance our program initiatives, upgrade our facilities, and support our students and teachers every day with an eye toward our future. We thank you all for the part you played in making this year possible. With gratitude, JEFF FOREMAN ’80

“It has been interesting to compare what I remember about being a student so long ago and what I’ve been able to observe about NSCD in recent years. The physical campus, technology, and, of course, the faces of the faculty and administration all look different. But many things are the same—the most important of which is the culture of the school as evidenced by the dedication of parents, faculty, and administration to ensuring that each student is given an opportunity to succeed in academics, in the arts, in athletics, and in community service. I know that our students will remember NSCD as a place where you were encouraged to flourish and were given a lot of support to do so, even during such a challenging year. Thank you to our alumni and friends who help ensure that this work continues with their financial support and commitment to the school.” T O M G E R A G H T Y ’ 6 2 , Alumni Board President Service: Hilda’s Place / Samantha Ackley ’30

“I support North Shore because it allowed me to flourish as a student, athlete and friend. I will always remember the incredible relationships and experiences I had while at North Shore and hope that giving back will allow other students to have these same awesome opportunities.” CAROLINE SEGAL ’20 From the Archives: Boys Tennis

IT’S A MATCH! A total of $29,000 in match incentives helped inspire new alumni donors or those who missed giving last fiscal year, alumni Connectathon donors in the spring and all donors at the end of our fiscal year in June. We are grateful to those who lead the way by providing the matches and all participants whose contributions helped exceed our overall Annual Giving goal.

Congratulations to the top 5 Alumni classes with the highest Annual Giving participation

The Board of Trustees and school administration is committed to continuing to execute the 2017-2022 Strategic Plan as we make fundraising progress in support of its initiatives through our Campaign, North Shore Forevermore. Our comprehensive campaign includes Annual Giving, which helps to fund the operating budget. Our case for support outlines initiatives for People, Program, Place and Perpetuity/ Endowment, ref lecting the goals in the Strategic Plan. Our response to date has been overwhelmingly positive as individuals have responded to our request for support and feedback. Our campaign leaders Tom Flickinger, Sharon Watrous and Christina Self are grateful to our dedicated Campaign Cabinet of volunteers: Cathy Bell Bartholomay ’79, Michael Canmann, Susan Canmann, Meredith Carter, Michael Carter, Jeff Foreman ’80, Molly Shotwell Oelerich ’87, Duff Stevenson and Hillary Wirtz ’97; Strategic Advisors: Susan Bondurant, and Bert Getz; and Former Campaign Cabinet members: Katie Freiburger, Laura Heinz Peters ’89 and Marc Peters ’82. We are thankful for those who have responded to our call for leadership support in this early phase of the campaign—and to those who have made provisions to the school in their estate plans, joining other members of our Heritage Society (see p. 26). Our strategic priorities are focused on People (student scholarship and faculty professional development), Program (STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts and math; equity, inclusion and community engagement; health and wellness; and community partnerships), Place (renovation of the Mac Gym and Forest Street addition) and Perpetuity (growing the school’s endowment). the benefit

This year, we brought our friends together virtually for our second Scholarship Benefit. The success of our inaugural event in 2018 has been supporting our scholarship program for the past three years, and we now have additional funding to continue this supplemental support. We are all Raiders and we take pride that being an inclusive community has been part of our DNA since 1919. We all have a more enriched experience at North Shore because we are able to learn from and through each other’s perspectives and experiences. In our videos we heard Manny Hodzic ’15, Justin Hartley ’19, Paula Castillo ’90 and Ashleigh Cross St. Peters ’05 share what their NSCD experience meant to them. Now, Manny is pursuing a career in finance; Justin is a political and community organizer; Paula helps others as a clinical director and psychologist; and Ashleigh is an administrator in an independent school. The impact of those who not only participated in our program this year, but also of those who supported the event in 2018, has been felt year after year, especially during a time when we experienced unforeseen challenges. Thank you to our supporters who again came forward this year to make all of it possible. Anonymous (5)

THANK YOU to all who generously supported the school this year. I am especially grateful for all our

volunteers who worked tirelessly to help our development efforts. From Annual Giving to the Scholarship Benefit to the future needs of our school with the Campaign, they had it all covered. The leadership in our community is strong— our trustees provided direction during an uncertain year and our alumni volunteers were instrumental in keeping our alumni community connected and informed. The faculty/staff and parent representatives for Annual Giving were important in helping to reach our goals in support of our teachers and students. The time, enthusiasm and commitment from our volunteers helped make a significant impact on our fundraising efforts during a unique year when it was needed most. Raider spirit is shining bright—thank you for living and serving! MOLLY SHOTWELL OELERICH ’87, Board Development Chair, parent of Buckley ’23 and Dixie ’26

Global Singalong The lower school chorus participated in a worldwide singalong as part of a Sing2G7 event on June 9. As world leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States converged on Cornwall, UK, for the 2021 G7 Summit, more than 1,000 children across 14 time zones joined Truro Cathedral’s choristers over Zoom to sing “Gee Seven,” a song written especially for the project by Sir Tim Rice. The Truro choristers began the song and then passed the leadership baton from country to country, with choirs and soloists across the globe—including NSCD’s very own lower school chorus— leading the whole group at different moments. Through the Sing2G7 project, over 27,000 young voices in 31 countries learned the song and recorded videos of themselves singing to the G7 leaders about issues such as climate change, poverty and COVID-19. “Feels like the way they sing ‘wonder’ just makes it—well a whole realm more

44

wonderful!” wrote the event organizers about NSCD’s rendition of the song when they posted it on their Facebook page. “Actually, I have to confess that this one (like a few others) made me tear up— the singing, the swaying and dancing, the obvious joy in the children and, of course, the simple fact that all of us are singing the same piece so far apart.”

Youth Poetry Awards Poems by three North Shore Country Day students were recognized with Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards in the spring. They were among 26 winners and 16 honorable mentions selected out of 365 submissions from 75 schools across Illinois. • D ear Piece of Paper by Max Steinhandler ’30, written during the third grade spring poetry writing unit. • Breathe by Sadie Haupt ’28, inspired by the fifth grade unit on poetry of the Harlem Renaissance, as well as last year’s Franke Fund study of protests.

• I’m smiling under my mask by Liliana Green ’22, from a set of poems written as a final project in 11th grade English class. The Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards is a continuation of the contest Gwendolyn Brooks started in 1970 in her role as Poet Laureate of Illinois and continued until her passing in 2000. Since 2017, Illinois Humanities, in partnership with Brooks Permissions, Poetry Foundation, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, has hosted this statewide poetry contest for youth in grades K-12. DEPARTING FACULTY Vinny Cousineau U P P E R S C H O O L M AT H E M AT I C S T E A C H E R

The impact Vinny Cousineau had in his 12 years at North Shore is incredibly clear. In addition to his work as a math teacher, he led Interim, house and advisory; he was on the EDI council; he mentored the GSA, and student and faculty LGBTQ+ affinity groups; and he embodied “Live and Serve” outside of his school life. In everything he did, he was all in, engaging with passion and with zeal, with his whole self, and hoping that others would do the same. In addition, he constantly showed his gratitude towards those who were on the ride with him, whether they were his students or his colleagues; he’s really good at being thankful. Above all, in everything Vinny did at North Shore, he was authentically and openly himself. Every day, in his love of sports, theater, math and his community, when he was serious and focused, and when he was laughing with joy, he showed our students that being who you truly are isn’t just allowed, it’s the best way to live your fullest life. By sharing his life stories with us, he let the North Shore community understand his experiences, but even more he truly showed us all a way to seize life and live each day full of wonder, passion and gratitude. This modeling has inspired me personally over and over again in the past dozen years, and while I’ll miss him as a colleague, I’ll miss him even more as a friend. We wish him all the best in his new adventures.

During my first semester when it was time to choose my faculty mentor, I was told to “think of someone you are genuinely excited to see when you walk into a room, a colleague with whom you enjoy having conversation about anything.” Carmen Gomez-Fiegl was easily my first choice, but I wondered whether she would be willing to mentor a frazzled new teacher on top of her existing commitments. Much to my delight, Carmen agreed to be my mentor (it probably didn’t hurt that I had recently cast her daughter Paula as the lead in our spring musical!), and a wonderful professional and personal relationship was born. What struck me immediately about Carmen was how she truly gives you 100% of her attention and energy, along with showing a genuine interest in you. She is someone who has always effortlessly modeled “learning to listen and listening to learn.” As I worked with Carmen over the past several years, I was inspired by her steadfast commitment to developing authentic relationships with both colleagues and students. She is someone I have always looked up to in terms of truly living in the moment, and Carmen extends this to her home life as well. I have had the pleasure of being her guest and seeing her in action as a passionate parent and spouse while attending spirited gatherings in her backyard. Come to think of it, our mutual love for good food and good company probably explains why we have always gotten along so well. I would like to thank Carmen for gracing us with her presence here at North Shore, and I cannot wait until our paths cross again!

What can I say about Mike Peccia? He was and is wickedly smart, wickedly funny and steadfastly loyal. He was a good friend, colleague, partner and mentor. My rudimentary understanding of tech infrastructure is due to his willingness to explain and share his knowledge. During his almost 27-year tenure at North Shore, Mike rose through the ranks from the maintenance department as an electrician and all-around handyman. He is incredibly mechanically inclined and thus was promoted to the tech department managing our infrastructure and fixed asset acquisitions. He also collaborated with Jim Lechowicz, our Maintenance Manager, to troubleshoot our mechanical systems on campus which often included network components. Mike gave his all to North Shore even when there was nothing left to give. He was my friend and colleague, and he will be sorely missed.

Dana Specht MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER; M O D E L U N P R O G R A M C O O R D I N AT O R

It is with very mixed emotions that we write this appreciation of our colleague and friend, Dana Specht who, after 13 years teaching eighth grade social studies and two years teaching ninth grade world history at North Shore, is moving back to her home state of Minnesota to take on new teaching challenges and be closer to her family. First and foremost, Dana loves teaching social studies. She believes this subject speaks to our values, and she brought energy and direction to many projects, including interdisciplinary projects she designed and ran alongside us. When Frank Daschille retired, she became Model UN Coordinator, a role in which she excelled. Under her stewardship, the team and many individual students won numerous accolades and prizes. Additionally, Dana served as an Advisor, a role she really enjoyed, and as a middle school representative to the Faculty Counsel and the Equity and Diversity Coordinating Committee. As a teacher and an individual, Dana was never afraid to try something new and greatly appreciated the support from her department and school administration whenever she incorporated new and exciting curriculum. Recently, she studied for and received her qualification as a National Board Certified teacher. For the past many pre-Covid years, the three of us led the eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C. where we made many memories and where her absence will be keenly felt this year. It is hard to smile and wish your colleague well while regretting very much the space she leaves behind. We are grateful for all the time we spent together and we know that our loss is Minnesota’s gain.

“Live and Serve” Week NSCD hosted its first annual “Live and Serve” Week, culminating in a day of service on May 8. The event, which was held concurrently on campus and around the country, brought alumni and current school families together to put the school’s motto into action. Leading up to the day of service, the PA “Live and Serve” Committee and NSCD Live+Serve Lab joined forces to organize a full week of “Live and Serve” events, creating opportunities for all ages to take action through service, and to learn more about NSCD’s community partners and the issues they face. Throughout the week, there were also opportunities to make and deliver lunches to Margarita Inn for Connections for the Homeless. Monday kicked off with “Random Acts of Kindness” Day. Families were charged to do something nice for someone else. They could show their appreciation by writing a note or drawing a picture, or help someone out by carrying a bag or opening a door. The Live+Serve Lab also hosted a virtual community forum with representatives from Connections for the Homeless, Family Focus and the Northwestern Settlement House. Tuesday was “Educate Yourself” Day. Using resources provided by the school’s partner organizations and posted on the NSCD Service Programs website, students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni were encouraged to learn more about the systemic issues facing our communities. Wednesday was “Wish List” Day, where people could support NSCD’s community partners by purchasing new items they have specifically requested. Thursday was “At-Home Service Projects” Day. Families were given a list

of ideas to choose from, or they could come up with something on their own to do as a family. Friday kicked off the Family Focus Drive. Students could bring supplies to school on this day and put them in the designated box in each division. Or their whole family could come to drop off supplies on Saturday. On Saturday, the school hosted its third annual “Live and Serve” Day— which began as an initiative out of the Alumni Office—with three service events on campus: a Family Focus supply drive, an opportunity to assemble welcome kits for Connections for the Homeless and a garden cleanup to prepare the various plots around campus for planting.

Off campus, alumni organized trash clean-ups in the forest preserves and beaches, supported their local charities, packaged supplies for homeless shelters and worked in community gardens. The class of 1976, led by Dick Meyer and Karen Spencer Kelly, convened over Zoom with each classmate presenting on a notable nonprofit organization. They decided as a group to support FareStart—whose mission is “to transform lives, disrupt poverty and nourish communities through food, life skills and job training—and made a contribution on behalf of the class. A special thank you to the “Live and Serve” parent and alumni committees for all the effort they put in to make this special week of service a success.

REMEMBERING HOWARD JESSEN

Howard Jessen (second from right) with Ned ’73, Gwen ’76 and Art ’70

Howard Jessen

Howard Jessen died on September 29, 2021, leaving an incredible legacy, not only with his own children and grandchildren, but with the entire North Shore Country Day community over a span of six decades. He was an enthusiastic and engaged lifelong learner, often partnering with teachers in and out of the classroom. He also enjoyed broader interactions with the community— attending events, programs, performances, and sometimes even speaking French with our middle school French teacher and students. He coached bridge building in the Science Olympiad. He also served on the Board of Trustees and on the Foundation Board that manages the school’s endowment. He was a genuine friend to generations of Raiders. In a school that prides itself on truly knowing each individual, Howard epitomized how to accomplish that with his caring, considerate, sincere interactions with every member of the school community. From trustees, to parents, to parents of alumni, to alumni, to faculty and staff, to students, he was proactive yet never intrusive, interested to know you and make you feel known. In essence, he was an expert in building connection and community and NSCD was fortunate to have him in our midst. His genuine warmth and receptive demeanor with every person he encountered made everyone feel valued and respected. Howard was generous with his time, talents, passions and interests, and resources. He supported Annual Giving, as well as the school’s many fundraising benefits and capital campaigns. The establishment of The Jessen Family Scholarship Fund within the school’s endowment has provided critical funding for North Shore Country Day students now and for generations to come.

“Mr. Jessen was a true artist when it came to engineering. I first met him in high school when North Shore was competing in Science Olympiad where he coached me and several others on building bridges that always placed in the top three! I will never forget the days he would walk into Mr. Skalinder’s office with his briefcase, and start whipping out design after design of bridges. He was a true inspiration, and he will be missed.”

saachi shah ’09 “Mr. Jessen was an example of a gracious and kind person who had a love for life.”

peggy and jim colley , Parents of Alumni “Mr. Jessen was the embodiment of ‘Live and Serve.’ I deeply admired him and his commitment to the school. I first met him as a Science Olympiad coach when I was in middle school and I always looked forward to seeing him at alumni events. I will miss him!”

lisa doi ’09 , Trustee

“A truly gifted person and a role model who touched so many people’s hearts and showed how to live a full life!”

sun yoo , Current Parent, Science Olympiad Coach “Howard Jessen inspires—as a person, a lifelong learner, a coach, a mentor and a friend. He is a bridge builder, and no one has built more bridges at North Shore. Bridges connect, bring together, help steer one’s destination. Howard has built these bridges with students, alumni, teachers, coaches, administrators, parents and grandparents. His example inf luences us all.”

tom doar , Former Head of School (Excerpt from Hannaford Recognition 2013) “Every parent would want to be like Howard. When you saw him, you would seek him out to talk with him and just be with him. He exudes love of people and particularly North Shore students.”

tom flickinger , Parent of Current Students, and Alumni, Trustee

“There are not enough superlatives to describe the magical Howard Jessen. He has inspired me since the day that I met him and will continue to do so. A renaissance man, an uncanny intellect, a huge heart: Howard was the model of a life welllived. In a reference he would surely know, “I shall not look upon his like again.”

tom flemma , Head of School “Howard Jessen is the smartest person I’ve ever met. He taught me so much about engineering and design, and I will be forever grateful. I believe he missed his calling in life and he would have been a great teacher. By the time Howard began working with me roughly 20 years ago, he was in his mid 70s, yet he was able to relate and engage middle school and high school students at a very high level. This never changed. The love he had for coaching the students was a two-way street as the students loved having him as a coach as well. But more than anything, I will miss his generous spirit and kindness.”

lee block , Middle School Computer Science, Mathematics and Science Teacher; Science Olympiad Head Coach

1940s Theodore R. Butz ’48 (Ted), 91, died July

30, 2021, leaving behind his beloved wife of 53 years, former North Shore Country Day faculty member Elvira, his five children and their families. Ted grew up with his twin brother Robert ’48 and his older sister Alice Butz Moir ’44. He attended NSCD and graduated from Princeton University, after which he served as a Marine officer during the Korean War. Adored by his family, including Robert Butz ’05 and five other grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, Ted was an active sportsman who was not only a marathon runner, but an excellent tennis player, golfer and windsurfer. He and Elvira also shared a love of travel, visiting many places around the world. When not involved in sports, he was an avid reader and lover of crossword puzzles. We all remember him dearly for his kindness, generosity, his wonderful sense of humor and an inexhaustive love of ice cream! Ted was also known for his unwavering patience wrangling a handful of rambunctious, quarreling kids—especially during outings that often ended with at least one mishap or another. Whether a broken bone, a fish hook in the face, a camper burning down in the desert, attacks of hungry ducks or an unfenced bull, Ted’s quick and upbeat preparedness always prevailed. This surely prepared him for a long and active life. He was always there when we needed him and always ready to make us feel better. Ted served for many years as a North Shore Class Representative keeping in touch with classmates and supporting the school demonstrating his “Live and Serve” spirit. 56

The ACM SRC provides participants a chance to meet other students and to get direct feedback on their work from experts. This year’s competitions took place at 21 participating ACM SIG conferences and included more than 296 student participants. The SRC Grand Finals are the culmination of a year-long competition that involved more than 296 computer science students presenting research projects at 21 major ACM conferences. We share the sad news of the death of former faculty member Joyce Lopas on May 20, 2021. She was a highly respected and well loved member of the NSCD community. Joyce was an outstanding French Teacher and also served as Chair of Foreign Language Department. Her impact is lifelong for those who had the good fortune to have had her as a teacher and colleague during her long tenure at North Shore. She was a woman of many talents and accomplishments—a wonderful mentor, educator, colleague, friend, mother, grandmother, talented sculptor, and politically active advocate for women’s and minority rights.

My mother bought me real cream puffs for the performance. I also remember being able to go to the upper school for an algebra class. It was in middle school that I learned to play field hockey. I think that one of the best things about North Shore Country Day was that all students participated in activities beyond academic subjects so that we would live a full life. Everyone played sports, took art and sang in the chorus. I recently found my four purple varsity letters for field hockey. I was proud to make the varsity team as a freshman. family trip to Europe when my sons were in high school, I impressed them by ordering at McDonald’s in German. They were taking French and also had an opportunity to practice. When I went to Ripon College and decided on a chemistry major I was able to take a proficiency test to opt out of the German requirement. Mr. Licata was my Chemistry teacher and Mr. Talley was my Physics teacher at North Shore. I still appreciate the North Shore motto, “Live and Serve.” I volunteered in my sons’ classrooms, and participated in The American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the League of Women Voters. I served two terms on the Dublin, CA, school board. Living here at Stoneridge Creek Retirement Community, I served a term on the Resident Council and am currently the chair of the Health and Long-Term Care Committee. I also facilitate our book club. I always enjoy coming back to visit the North Shore Country Day campus, and I’ve attended several class reunions over the years, joined by my husband Jim. We also visited on our own when we were in the Chicago area to spend time with his relatives. I recently found a photo of us in 1996 when we attended a celebration for the Mac Gym. In addition to teaching at North Shore my father did some coaching with Mac McCarty. My brother, Terry Ostrom ’61, and I attended North Shore on a scholarship because my father taught there. We both got a wonderful education that prepared us well for both college and advanced degrees. I have donated to North Shore over the years because I feel the desire to give something back.
