TAKING UP THE CHALLENGE

Writing this letter each fall is a welcome opportunity to look back on the previous school year from a little bit of distance. This is always a busy place, and the sheer volume of JK-12 activity is only partially represented by the articles and pictures in this issue of the Acorn . What a year!

Add a global pandemic into the mix, and “doing school” demands an extra injection of time and energy just to main tain what’s “normal,” let alone adapt to a new context. In that sense, each blurb in the pages ahead is a triumph of the possible during trying times.

Commencement is a perfect example. The last “traditional” graduation ceremony in the auditorium was in June 2019. Since that time, we have held a different type of ceremony each year. Each was unique to that year’s COVID situation and each graduating class. And in totality, each has crept a little closer back to what we’ve always considered “normal.”

My message to the graduates in June, though, asked them to consider whether a return to normal should really be our paramount goal. If our goal as an institu tion mirrors our goals for each student— that we continually grow and evolve and improve—isn’t it incumbent upon us to integrate our learning into our views, routines and even traditions?

We’ve done that in numerous ways across the school during COVID, and we have found ways of teaching, gathering and communicating that we will continue to employ once this pandemic is fully behind us. That learning process has tested us all and caused some scars, to be sure, but the outcomes are not all negative.

That’s why I spoke to the graduates this year about the Japanese art form of kintsugi, which believes that highlighting flaws or breaks in pottery using precious metals can make that piece even more unique and beautiful. Like it or not, we have all been changed by our pandemic experience. NSCD has always taught students to be self-aware, to gather data and learn from mistakes. It is so tempting to just put COVID in the rear-view mirror and cruise forward, because we are all so tired. But that would be a mistake. In asking students (and teachers and admin istrators) to strive to understand the impact COVID-19 has had on them, we model what we as a school must do.

What can we do as a school to better see and mend our cracks so that we emerge stronger? How can we look forward to our next iteration rather than backward to a 2019 definition of “normal”? I’ve asked similar questions before and now we have the chance to engage these prompts. What elements of teaching should we add to our reper toire? Are there things we skipped that we really didn’t miss or need?

The answers to such questions could embrace a full range of school topics. Should we keep the outdoor pep rally at Homecoming? How about virtual confer ences? How does our social-emotional learning curriculum need to change to reflect the long-term impact of the pan demic on learning? As we answer these and hundreds of other questions, we must use our mission and values as our primary lens.

Over our 104 years, students at North Shore Country Day have faced a remark able range of earth-shattering and lifechanging events. Each time, the current generation of teachers has taught students to seek answers, challenge assumptions and find opportunities to serve their world—even in the darkest of times.

As before, this generation of teachers has taken up that challenge and per formed admirably. As before, supporters of the school have generously given us the tools to meet the moment and ensure that learning and growth and service continue apace. You will see numerous examples of all this and more in the pages that follow.

As I write I hear laughter in the halls and see students hard at work in the class room across from my office. Buses are getting ready to take our athletes around Chicagoland and the tryouts for the fall play are underway. None of this could happen without the generosity and sup port of Raiders near and far, as reflected in this Annual Report issue. On behalf of our students, faculty and staff—thank you.

F or the third year in a row, North Shore Country Day celebrated upper school Commencement outdoors, with the iconic auditorium as a backdrop. Although showers earlier in the day pushed some of the pre-ceremony photos inside, by the time families started to arrive for the festivities, the clouds had parted and the sun began to peek out.

Aside from the location, the Class of 2022 Commencement was the closest to a “typical” ceremony since before the pandemic. Gone were the cars and the giant video screen from the “drive-in” style ceremony of 2020. And this year, guests were seated in regular rows—not the fam ily pods spaced six feet apart to promote social distancing, as seen in 2021.

“This is the fourth iteration of North Shore’s graduation in the past four years,” remarked Head of School Tom Flemma in his welcome. “That’s a lot of change. We worked hard to retain many of the tradi tions of a North Shore graduation even as we tweaked the ceremony once again.”

One of those traditions involved the Kelly-green jacket Tom was wearing that day. He went on to tell the story of how his father died when he was 18, and how he inherited his large collection of colorful jackets. Every year, he chooses one to wear to Commencement, to honor his dad and reflect on the role he played in his life.

“This year, as my daughter Bella graduates, I’ve thought of him more than ever and how proud he would be of her,” he said. “I hope this ceremony provides each of the graduates the oppor tunity to reflect on the people who are proud of them—and there are many.”

In his message to the graduates, Tom talked about the Japanese art of kintsugi, where lacquer mixed with precious metals like gold, silver or platinum is used to mend broken pottery. He encouraged the graduates to embrace the “cracks” that made them stronger and unique.

“Each of you navigated a crazy high school era, and forged a path with a thou sand individual twists and turns,” he explained. “Many of these detours left cracks of some sort, visible and invisible. Will you Superglue the pieces together, striving only to approximate your preCOVID self, or will you repair and adorn the cracks, acknowledging the jagged edges and reveling in the newfound strength that you’ve developed and the skills you’ve learned?”

Upper School Science Teacher Jerry Rietveld also imparted some words of wis dom to the graduating class. He chroni cled his family’s journey from Holland to Ireland and then to the United States as his father went from teaching electronics to mink ranching. One of the most impor tant lessons his parents taught him was that no matter what happens in life, you will figure it out.

“Under any and all circumstances, encountering, tackling and solving problems has been and will continue to be a timeless human endeavor,” he said. “Be part of that experience, and bring your creativity as well as a sense of adventure.”

Lifer Liliana Green ’22 delivered the senior message to her classmates. She talked about the importance of poetry, and how a line from a poem called “Shake the Dust” by spoken word artist Anis Mojgani impacted her. “Every time I listen to his performance, one small line stands out to me the most: ‘Speak every time you stand so you do not forget yourself.’ So that is what I am here to do today. I am here, standing in front of you, making sure that none of this—none of you— will be forgotten.”

She closed with an original piece she wrote for her class, in the style of that poem:

Continue your journey forward, and do so trembling or steadfast and strong because what’s next is all yours.

“Make my words worth something” because they are for you; use them, chew them, cover them in a blanket when it gets cold but for my sake and theirs, make their journey from my mouth to your ears worth the trip and shake the dust.

“[Anis Mojgani’s] ‘Shake the Dust’ is for anyone who may feel scared or unsure about what is to come. He tells his audience to live their lives to the fullest, and to be unapologetically themselves. He tells them to hold on to the good moments and grow from the bad ones. … His words and his message are so much more than just another poem, they’re a mantra. One that is extremely fitting for a group of teenagers about to experience a thousand new things all at once.”

“I would suggest that at times, just go with the flow—however, keep your eyes on the river bank, just in case you feel that the current is taking you where you really don’t want to end up. Absolutely go against the grain if you sense there will be a waterfall downstream. In general, accept the things you cannot change but definitely change the things you cannot accept. Over the course of your life, you will unearth exactly what that means for you.”

“To say that this community has had an influence on my life does not even scratch the surface on describing how it shaped who I am. Not only did I have amazing colleagues and mentors, but I made the most incredible friends. The hundreds of students I’ve taught and coached have impacted me and taught me so much about myself, bettering who I am, and each holds a very special place in my heart. And it hasn’t only been me, but my entire family who has reaped the benefits from this incredible community.”

The success of our Campaign, North Shore Forevermore, is a direct result of strong and dedicated leader ship and generous philanthropic support. Fundraising for the current strategic initiatives continues as we will begin the process of planning our next strategic plan to carry us further into the future. The dedicated focus of the Board of Trustees and school administration on a robust strategic-planning pro cess is a testament to the strength of the school today—focused on the present while preparing for the future. This regular practice of reflection and forward thinking has been a tradition at NSCD for our 104-year history, and generations of devoted parents and alumni have been committed to this healthy process of assessment with a keen eye on the future.

This comprehensive Campaign, which includes Annual Giving, focuses on People (student scholarship and faculty professional development), Program (STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts and math; skills curriculum; equity and inclusion; health and wellness), Place (transformation of the Mac Gym and addition of a JK-8 Learning Link) and Perpetuity (growing the school’s endowment).

We are thankful for those who have responded so positively to our call for leadership support of the Campaign, including our dedicated Campaign volunteers (see page 40) and those who have made provi sions to the school in their estate plans, joining other members of our Heritage Society (see page 16).

New Family Welcome Breakfast

The PA welcomed 80 new NSCD families at the Purple Wagon Welcome Breakfast, held outdoors on the quad in September. Each year, the Purple Wagon committee of the PA, in partnership with the Admission office, pairs incoming families with current school families who serve as mentors. The mentor families reach out in the spring to answer questions and help the new families acclimate to NSCD through phone calls and get-togethers. The Purple Wagon also delivers welcome gifts before school starts in the fall. Thank you to Purple Wagon Chair Jennifer Stone ’82, the Purple Wagon committee and all of the Purple Wagon mentor families for their time and effort to help our newest families feel at home. And welcome to our 80 new families and 120 new students. We are so happy you are all here!

acorn · Fall 2022 Annual Report Edition 47

Tura Cottingham was the first person I met at North Shore Country Day, and as she gave me a tour of the campus, I was struck by how genuinely kind she was, and by how much she loved this place. I was making a significant shift in my career, from journalism to marketing, and she was quick to take me under her wing and show me the ropes.

She taught me about the intricacies of marketing—how it’s OK to let a source read a story before you print it and (gasp) even let them make changes to what they said. She taught me about diplomacy, and understanding when to fight for something, and when to hold my tongue. (I’m still working on that one!)

Tura is good at her job. Really good. She took her agency and freelance experi ence and essentially created our depart ment out of nothing. She led the school through multiple redesigns and refreshes of the Acorn magazine and the school website, through the creation of a beautiful

centennial coffee table book (which is still available for purchase on our web site!), through shifts in messaging and, most recently, through a complete brand overhaul, rolling out a new school icon and Raider mascot.

Tura is leaving some big shoes to fill. It’s not every day you find somebody so full of school spirit that they will wrap their car from bumper to bumper in North Shore Country Day branding. But Tura did. She volunteered to turn her little Mini Cooper into a portable billboard— just another example of how Tura is always thinking outside the box.

Thank you for everything you’ve given to NSCD, Tura, you will be greatly missed.

Libby Ester

For almost two decades, Libby Ester has been someone I could do great work with, teach with, turn to, laugh with, joke with, complain with and bemoan the end of times with.

Libby is dedicated—always going the extra mile at school, after school and on weekends. Libby is caring—in the class room, on the playground, with students, parents and teachers. Libby is creative. She has created so much curriculum and shared so many ideas that have enriched fifth grade and the entire lower school. Libby is supportive—always willing to lis ten, commiserate, lend a hand, help out or give advice. She is passionate—always looking to do more, do it better, advocate, never settle. Libby is way smart. She was a lawyer before becoming a teacher, and she brings that intelligence to planning, creat ing and thinking about how we can do school best.

In lower school she has done so many things: Election units, India, Greece and Rome, Chicago neighborhoods, iMovie projects, closings, Over the Rainbow, buddy days, Kaleidoscope, theme weeks, field trips, writing curriculum, reading curriculum—the list is endless.

But she is not only a good teacher, she is also a good friend. My wife and I moved to Chicago in 2003. We didn’t know any one. We’d never been here. We have made a life here, but having family so far away is really hard—even 20 years later. At the beginning I really worried. Who would I call if something happened, if I needed help right then and there? It didn’t take long to know Libby would be there. Libby has always been a 3 a.m. phone call person for me—someone you can count on no matter what—and that has meant so much to me. That’s the type of person, friend and colleague we are losing, and why we were so lucky to have her here at NSCD.

Jason Giffen

Over the past ten years, Jason Giffen has had a profound impact on this school. He helped shape the student body and for that matter the parent body. He has worked tirelessly to form partnerships with different placement organizations and feeder schools. He has reimagined shadow days, open houses and the applica tion process as a whole. He has welcomed families with warmth and honesty. He has been the first and main point of contact for thousands (yes, thousands) of prospective families. He has been a sounding board for numerous colleagues and provided sounds advice. He has coached football teams, golf teams and helped spearhead the ninth grade advisory program. Overall, he has brought a level of professionalism to his office every day that has benefited the school tremendously.

Jason has also had a profound impact on me. When I came to work here, I knew a lot about North Shore and very little about admissions. In fact, I remember sit ting in my interview with Jason thinking “I have zero idea what he is talking about, but I think I still want the job and I want

to work for him.” He helped me learn and fall in love with admission work. I now understand almost all of what he’s talking about when he starts talking about the job.

He has also been a tremendous friend. Jason and Lizzy have included me in barbecues, wine nights, socially distanced bonfires and they helped me re-enter the NSCD community as a faculty member. His partnership, mentorship and friend ship have been invaluable to me personally and professionally. And, I can confidently say that I also had a profound impact on Jason professionally because he no longer wears a tie to work every day.

mullery doar Associate Director of Admission

Lizzy Giffen

Lizzy Giffen and I have conducted hun dreds of meetings together with juniors and their families. But even from the start, we’ve never really planned who was going to ask what. She knows what I’m thinking before I say it, and more often than not, she doesn’t have to say anything at all for me to understand where she is coming from. Over the years, we met with students together, we wrote letters of recommenda tion together, we strategized together.

Just as Lizzy makes pretty much everything I do better, I know she has had a positive impact on so many in the NSCD community. Lizzy and I have spent a sig nificant amount of time touring colleges, usually accompanied by a herd of juniors. One of these trips even involved Lizzy lit erally picking up a student who had fallen on a set of train tracks, just in time to escape an oncoming train—that’s a true story, and if it’s not a metaphor for what Lizzy does I’m not sure what is. Whether with our juniors and seniors and their

college searches, her tenth grade English students and their memoirs, or our first year colleagues and their introductions to North Shore, Lizzy takes the time to truly hear people and try to understand how she can help. Her intuition tells her when to offer suggestions, or when to just listen. She jumps in when she’s needed—orga nizing games in house, planning an X-day session, and even the thankless task of orchestrating AP exams. Her creativity, empathy, and thoughtfulness make what we do better.

Over the past ten years Lizzy has become so much more than a colleague and friend. Lizzy and all the Giffens are my chosen family. I truly feel like I am losing my other half. Thank you for being you.

Beatrice McKenna

UPPER SCHOOL FRENCH TEACHER

“I Remember…” a poem for Beatrice, inspired by my daughter’s third grade teachers.

I remember the China trip we went on together. You rode a bike on the city wall of Xi’an and climbed the Great Wall with the students. You did everything with them, including spending all your money shopping and enjoying the delicious food. I remember we had to make a tough and urgent call about a student. Thank you for your partnership and company. It was a special and memorable trip because of you.

I remember you opened your beautiful house many times to host our department gatherings. I remember the French cheese and wine, your cat, our conversation and laughter. Thank you for your generosity and hospitality. Can we still do this in the future?

I remember you were putting the lights up to decorate the cafeteria for Prom last year. You spent so much time and energy planning the Prom and hosting the French exchange

program. Thank you for providing students and us with unforgettable memories.

I remember you asked tough questions during faculty meetings that many of us wanted to ask but were not brave enough to ask. Thank you for your courage. You’ve always been our voice.

I remember our family watched the video you showed to Carissa’s class “Monsieur Nobek“ so many times and laughed so hard every time. Carissa enjoyed your class so much that she was sad she would not be in your class any more. Thank you for your support, patience and inspiration. You instilled the love of French in her.

Beatrice, I will remember you as a warmhearted, loving and caring friend, a dedicated, passionate and patient teacher, a hardworking, cooperative and fun colleague. We wish you the best spending time with your mom and finding your new adventures. We will miss you dearly.

Upper School Chinese Teacher

Leo Roth MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT

Leo Roth, what can I say about him— he was a friend and a colleague. He was with our maintenance department for 24 years. He spent countless hours at the ready; always there to help and support in whatever way he could with event management, traffic control and deliveries. At the North Shore Country Day and Night School, that was and still is, a valuable skill. During his career, Leo earned himself the illustrious title

“Director of Illumination” as the chief person responsible for lightbulb replacement and lighting repairs across the entire campus.

If you’ve spent any time with Leo, you know he has a wickedly dry sense of humor, is a straight shooter and has a heart of gold.

He entertained us time and again during Morning Ex with his band, churning out some cool guitar riffs and even singing every now and then. It was always fun to watch students’ reactions during those times in the auditorium when the lights dimmed and Leo and his band walked out on stage to play. Many of them had no idea we had a full-fledged rock star in our midst.

He will be missed, though rumor has it that he comes out of retirement now and again to help around campus. In his retire ment, he is spending more time with his band, enjoying himself having earned a well-deserved break.

50 departing faculty

Berkley Wellstein

FIRST GRADE TEACHER

Congratulations!

Today is your day. You’re off to new places and sadly moving away.

Whether it was Ohio, Chicago or college in Cantoo, We know that North Shore has been a special place for you.

Susan Schinleber

MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH AND PUBLIC SPEAKING TEACHER

In teaching, when one is truly in love with one’s work or vocation, it is conta gious. With Susan Schinleber’s classes, this was ever-present.

It is with very mixed emotions that we write this on behalf of our colleague and friend, who decided to retire after a dozen years at North Shore. If you know Susan at all, it will be no surprise that she left North Shore with countless plans in place and passions to explore.

First and foremost, Susan is a dedicated educator who loves teaching. For most of her time at NSCD, she taught eighth grade English and public speaking, but she began her tenure teaching upper school French. Over the years, she has engaged students in English, as well as supported and stretched students to step outside their comfort zone in public speaking. She held them to high standards while incorporating humor and her dry British wit on a daily basis.

As a teacher and key member of the eighth grade team, she brought energy and direction to many projects, not least of which was the creation of Shakespeare

Day. This day became one of the staples of the middle school over the past decade, including a Elizabethan costume contest, monologue contest for eighth graders, ruff-making activity, Shakespearean scene rehearsals and, on some occasions, Elizabethan trivia.

Additionally, Susan served as an advisor, a role she truly enjoyed and excelled at. She would author our eighth grade graduation script each year, tinged with her signature dry wit. In the years prior to the pandemic, Susan consistently helped to lead the eighth grade trip to Washington.

Students and faculty alike will miss everything from Susan’s classroom tree to her remote learning visits with Lady Chester, her dear pet bird! We wish her the best of luck in her next chapter!

With life’s hang ups and bang ups you thought “We have nothing to lose.” And I agree, Montana is the perfect place to choose.

Your new adventure will start two days after tomorrow, And while you are excited They’re mixed with feelings of sorrow.

The lives that you’ve touched here at North Shore, will live on through our memories we will cherish evermore.

From College counseling, PE first, second, third and fourth grade too. North Shore has always been able to rely on YOU.

You have ALWAYS been willing to try on a new shoe.

You choreographed “What Does The Fox Say,” you sure know how to put on a show. You bring fun and laughter to everyone you know.

I will never forget when COVID hit hard, We had to teach via ZOOM, Me from my basement, And you from your craft room.

You are one of the most caring and thoughtful people I know. You exude kindness and support wherever you go.

Every student you have taught was so lucky to have you. The special moments together have stuck to them like glue.

We are not saying goodbye— Instead, see you later. For once a Raider, always a Raider!!!!

So let’s hear a cheer for this amazing girl we love more, For her incredible achievements here at North Shore.

Nancy Green Whiteman ’71

Nancy lives and serves—and bleeds purple. As an alum, married to an alum and parent of two graduates, she is loyal to the core in her Raider belief that North Shore Country Day is a distinct and special school in our community.

When Nancy first came to work for North Shore in the mid to late 1980s, she helped create the foundation of the alumni/development department. Then she came back in the late 1990s as the school’s part-time archivist. Then we expanded her role to be the director of alumni relations, devoting her professional career to fostering relationships with our alumni community to benefit our students and teachers. She has been a partner in fundraising and has served under four heads of school.

To foster alumni engagement, she has led the charge for Homecomings and reunions, regional gatherings around the country, lunches in the Loop, golf outings, Susan Marshall memorial concerts, alumni athletic events, and most recently, “Live and Serve” days and weeks, just to

name a few. She makes sure everyone feels welcome and a part of the North Shore community.

She has been an active participant on numerous committees, most recently on the JK-12 Community Committee with a particular dedication to Morning Ex, a committee on which she also served during her years as a student.

Our school is stronger and better for the efforts of Nancy Whiteman in part nership with generations of alumni and friends of our school. We wish Nancy and her husband Don well as they launch into retirement together to enjoy more time with their children and grandchildren, and their volunteer service, which we guarantee will include North Shore, because as many of us know, Nancy doesn’t take no for an answer…and, in turn, always says yes.

We will hold Nancy in our purple hearts forevermore.

Debbie Youderian LOWER SCHOOL COUNSELOR

It’s hard to imagine our lower school with out Debbie Youderian, but in all honesty, her reach is so much wider than just our division. Our school, our community, will be missing one of the best. She connects with families—students and parents alike—in a way that is so, so special. I literally saw tears in parents’ eyes during the last week of school as she greeted their children in her final days of morning car line.

I have always loved hearing what Debbie does at the beginning of the year to help our new students get acclimated to our community quickly. And I loved hearing her talk about the special ways she found to wrap up her time with her students and even students with whom she may not have worked one-on-one but who are leaving the school. She anticipates people’s needs and emotions so well, and it’s really very inspiring to watch her work her magic.

I could write a book about Debbie and how much we love her and what we will

miss, but after an activity during our final lower school faculty meeting in the spring, I was struck by the idea of outsourcing some of this reflection to my colleagues who are far more creative than I am. Here is a selection of six word memoirs of our irreplaceable Debbie Youderian:

- The beating heart of Lower School.

- Powered by compassion and Diet Coke.

- Most magical ears. A miracle worker.

- Adored by students and her colleagues

- Knows every child like her own.

- Never judging, always listening and supporting

- My mentor, my friend, my heart

- The glue that holds us together

- Speaks wisdom and truth with love.

- Open door. Open mind. Open heart.

- Feelings coach without equal, don’t go.

- There are no words. Forever grateful.

- She walks on water. *Mic drop*

James John Fuller Wolfe Madeleine Vaughan-Hellwig with big sister Sabrina Theodore “Teddy” Berns Keefe Connor John Manly

I had an immense amount of privilege to be a lifer at North Shore Country Day. From SK through 12th grade, most of my waking hours were spent at 310 Green Bay Road. I’d be concerned if I learned that I had to spend 13 straight years work ing the same job in the same office— perhaps this is a typical fear that many of us from the millennial generation possess—but going to NSCD for that length of time was different because I genuinely enjoyed my time on campus, and the experience allowed me to develop into the person I am today while also exposing me to a world beyond Winnetka.

On the NSCD campus, we were encour aged to participate in so many different activities, and I believe that by being able to try so many different things simultane ously it has helped me become more curious and well-rounded today. I really benefited from these opportunities that pushed me to do things outside my com fort zone. One obvious example that comes to mind was getting up on stage in front of an audience in the Diller Street Theater, such as in Morning Ex, chorus concerts

or the spring musicals. Although I sing much less today than I did back then (now I think it’s only the occasional karaoke session), by getting up in front of an audience, it has made me more comfortable presenting to colleagues in the workplace and public speaking in general, which is a skill I can trace back directly to my time at NSCD.

I’m also especially grateful for how NSCD’s top-notch education prepared me well for life post-graduation. Although I’ve certainly faced challenges in the 14-plus years since graduation, I’m certain that the fast pace and try-everything approach at NSCD has made everyday life more manageable and helped me to achieve my goals. For example, if it weren’t for NSCD there is no chance I would have been able to succeed academically in college and grad school, but thanks to NSCD I felt extremely well-prepared from Day 1 on.

My time at NSCD also exposed me to different ideas and cultures. My first expe riences traveling overseas were through NSCD activities during upper school like the Interim Week chorus trip to Germany

led by Mr. Querio and Mr. Randolph, Senior Service in Tanzania led by Mrs. McHugh and Model UN by Mr. Dachille. By having these experiences, it opened me up to other places farther away, so much so that I have spent the last seven years living and working overseas in Europe and Asia. Plus those 12 years of Spanish class were not a waste either!

I returned home from abroad at the end of last year and so have been much closer in the proximity to NSCD once again. It has been a pleasure to re-experi ence life on the North Shore, and it brings back feelings of nostalgia when it comes to NSCD. I think of the strong relationships I was able to develop with the faculty, staff and my fellow classmates, and how lucky I am to have been a part of such a positive community that is NSCD during the formative years of my life.
