“Daily interactions—whether ordinary or special—that require student involvement, that challenge and support, that engage, require energy and e¤ort and lead to true student growth. The process of school is, in fact, a process that helps develop habits, curiosity and attitudes that lay a foundation for a student’s educational experience.” tom doar iii “I Give to Make Every Day Happen” is not only a theme ideally suited to an Annual Report, but is also a phrase clearly on target for all independent schools. You see, without strong Annual Giving and other philanthropic support, the economic model that has driven independent schools for generations will not work. Independent schools like North Shore Country Day are dependent on the yearly contributions that make up the Annual Giving. These dollars go directly into our school’s operating budget and directly impact the day-to-day life of students and teachers. To be blunt, without strong Annual Giving, North Shore would not be in a position to fulfill our mission, and our students would not be positioned to grow, engage and experience all that is North Shore.
Equally important, “I Give to Make Every Day Happen” communicates our philosophy that education is a process—day-to-day and week-to-week— that culminates in meaningful student growth and development. I once read in another school’s alumni bulletin, a message written by the head of school that said “what we do best we do daily,” a message that resonated with me then—a message that resonates all the more with me today. For it is the daily dynamic of teaching and learning that leads to student growth in the very best schools. Daily interactions—whether ordinary or special—that require student involvement, that challenge and support, that engage, require energy and e¤ort and lead to true student growth. The process of school is, in fact, a process that helps develop habits, curiosity and attitudes that lay a foundation for a student’s educational experience.
One only needs to be around schools on a daily basis to see that it’s the routine of “doing” school that helps students not only acquire knowledge, but learn about themselves—their passions, strengths and weaknesses. As Head of School I have a number of responsibilities. One that I take very seriously is my responsibility to offer sincere thanks to those who give, and give, and give. Thanks to your generosity and that of so many others, we are positioned to provide a very personal and meaningful education to our students, and ultimately “Make North Shore Happen.”

Edward E. Ford Foundation Matching Grant Thanks to the generosity of the North Shore community, the School received a $50,000 grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation to advance our analysis of a 21st Century Scheduling Model that will impact the School jk –12. This was in the form of a matching grant, which required us to raise an additional $50,000 from increased or one-time contributions to Annual Giving. In fact, we exceeded this and raised a total of $70,700. Thank you for making this possible—we appreciate your belief in and support of North Shore, and our shared commitment to our students and teachers.

The teachers take a real interest in the students as individuals and know what to expect of them. We are impressed with the teachers’ enthusiasm, wonderful attitude and the values they express—they genuinely care about their students and provide a welcoming environment. This makes for great students! North Shore brings out the strengths in each student whatever their particular gifts or abilities. Our eldest granddaughter, Alexandra, loves history and we attribute this to the encouragement and guidance she received at North Shore. We know our grandchildren are receiving an excellent education, opportunities to “Live and Serve,” and guidance from very committed teachers— guiding them to bring out the best in themselves.

Annual Giving is a priority for us and is the most important financial gift we make to the School because it’s what ‘keeps the doors open’ and makes up the di¤erence between tuition and the true cost of a North Shore education. Other things such as nice facilities and new technology enhance the experience, but Annual Giving supports what really matters to the student—what happens every day in the classroom—and that is what’s most important. One of the best things about North Shore is the opportunity students have to participate in extracurricular activities—especially sports for our family. This is a large part of their development as people— being part of a team, the competition, the mentoring of the coaches. Our sons have developed because of that experience—an experience they might not have had at a di¤erent school. The ability to also participate in the arts and service projects is important to their development. A North Shore education generates a well-rounded young adult—confident and comfortable in new situations. 6

I believe doors close for individuals too early in life and North Shore keeps as many doors open as long as possible by providing so many opportunities for students to try that they wouldn’t have at many other schools. North Shore has an environment that I wholeheartedly believe in as a parent and a professional. There is a blend of academic rigor, fun, challenge and engagement. Learning is project-based, student-centered and hands-on. It is very rewarding for me when the “light bulb” goes on and students realize they were learning while having fun—such as when they are designing, building and testing bottle rockets or bridges. Our 100% faculty and sta¤ participation in Annual Giving shows that we are 100% behind the School and what we are trying to achieve. There is a belief in the fundamental founding principles of the School as well as the School’s current mission and future goals. If the outside community sees this support, others may be more willing to give.

I participate in Annual Giving because it supports the facilities that were so important to my experience and enhanced my learning at North Shore. The School is also very supportive of extracurricular activities. This was essential for me; I thrive outside the classroom and have learned that extracurricular activities prepare you for the real world just as much as, if not better than, classes do. My advice to current students is to be involved. Find activities within and outside of North Shore, and try them all. Don’t be afraid to give a wide range of activities a chance. You will learn something from each one, even if you don’t realize it immediately. Interim Weeks will always be a fond memory of my days at North Shore—I took trips to Mexico and Peru, did some woodworking, and learned how to barbeque all kinds of food. I am always in contact with my friends from North Shore. Even though we go to di¤erent schools and can only see each other occasionally, our friendships never skip a beat.

I see the impact of Annual Giving through unique learning experiences that enhance the curriculum— hands-on projects and activities such as the aquaponics system in our classroom. The Authors’ Party is my favorite part of the 1st grade curriculum because it shows how much growth there is in reading throughout the year. It’s amazing to see where they were in August—not being able to read or write a sentence and where they are now—reading books and writing stories. I am so proud of all the work the students have done and I feel honored to play a part in their success. Strong participation in Annual Giving by faculty and sta¤ shows pride in our school and how much we value the North Shore community. North Shore encourages faculty to be life-long learners and giving to the School helps provide us with those opportunities.

CURRENT PARENTS
Cathy and Dave Durning Parents of Clayton ’18 ; Annual Giving 8 th grade Parent Rep (Cathy)
Our son, Clayton, has attended North Shore Country Day since 5th grade. He has had a very positive experience. He has been challenged academically and he has made some wonderful friends. He is part of a friendly, inclusive community where everyone adds value and knows each other, not just the students, but the administration and support sta¤ as well. From our perspective, the best thing about North Shore has been the accessibility of the teachers and the way they take an interest in the students. They know Clayton as an individual, they are available outside of classroom time, and they work hard to help him be the best student he can be. We believe by supporting North Shore Country Day, we are supporting those who make North Shore a great school.

It’s a way to fully show our commitment to the School— a sign of partnering with the School. We give back to acknowledge the North Shore community. It is a collaborative community—students, alumni, parents, faculty/ sta¤ and others who come together for a common cause. There is such an energy and power of everyone working together. The community is kind, welcoming, supportive and genuine. People are committed to one goal with the focus on students. Getting to know people in the School community fosters a deeper appreciation for North Shore. We like that the students learn basic values—to be respectful, grateful and to embrace di¤erences. They are well-mannered, thoughtful and confident leaders. The School community is very open and flexible to embrace new ideas and diversity while still rooted in tradition at the same time. North Shore has been really grounding for our family. We gain so much from the School and definitely get back more than we give.

“Our school has wonderful resources that delve naturally into the learning process — technology, spaces, wonderful programs — but our real strength as a school relies on the human contribution…”
Carmen Gomez-Fiegl
I like to support teachers who go the extra mile to make our students go beyond content learning and help them become empathetic, committed world citizens with positive values. Many of my colleagues and I believe that delivering rigorous content, though necessary in a demanding competitive society like ours, is only one piece of the big educational puzzle that each and every one of our students is called to complete before they leave North Shore: wisdom, common sense and openness to others should be as attainable goals as reaching high level of academic knowledge. As a parent, I appreciate faculty who are invested in helping students excel in content areas, but who are also role models for my children. Our school has wonderful resources that delve naturally into the learning process—technology, spaces, wonderful programs—but our real strength as a school relies on the human contribution; faculty and sta¤ make connections with students and strive to recognize strengths in students at an early stage in their learning, helping them reach their intellectual, and more importantly, their human potential. a c o r n · Annual Report 2013–2014 9

We want to show support for the values of the School and to build on the commitment of donors in the past. The School is in an incredibly strong position with record enrollment and investments in faculty, student programming and technology. That’s directly a result of investments made in the past—so not only do we want to sustain our position but I feel we have a responsibility to build on that legacy. We’ve been involved with the School for over 14 years and it’s gratifying to have seen ideas brought to life and been a part of what’s been accomplished in that time.
it important? If you look at the picture
(above—John Darrow ’65, Je¤ Colman and Howard Jessen), the three gentlemen I am privileged to know have all been involved with the School for many years and served in leadership roles. Their connectedness continues in new ways; John serves on the Foundation Board; Je¤ supports students, development e¤orts and alumni outreach; and Howard works closely with Science Olympiad and was this year’s Hannaford honoree. As a Board leader I benefit from their counsel and linkage to the traditions of the School while it inspires me to serve North Shore in new ways going forward. What is a memorable North Shore experience? Every year produces mem-
orable experiences. From this year alone, I won’t forget the first three weeks Shore has a large, comprehensive program of varied programming in our restored Auditorium: the ebullient all-school for a school its size. Tuition only covers 70% of the School’s operating expenses. Running a jk –12 school of 500+ students is a big task and requires exceptional funding if we are going to be the best. The di¤erence between tuition and expenses is about $8,600 per student and that needs to be covered through Annual Giving. Why should Annual Giving be a priority?
In order for North Shore to maintain its history of excellence, we need a strong Annual Giving program. Always striving to be the best school means that we hope alumni and parents will make Annual Giving at North Shore a priority. How do you see the impact of strong Annual Giving participation at North Shore?
A strong Annual Giving program has a significant impact on every aspect of the School. Our academic o¤erings are enhanced by brighter and better-equipped teachers. Our athletic programs excel due to better facilities and stronger coaches. We will be able to take the Arts to new heights. Annual Giving touches every part of the School. What part of your North Shore experience do you most appreciate? For me, I appreci-
ate our teachers. They are bright, dedicated to being the best and are always willing to go the extra mile for our students. Having superior teachers is critical to our growth and I am supporting teacher initiatives through our Annual Giving program.
the benefit board
The Benefit Board The Benefit Board’s annual Auction and party “The Purple Wave,” held on April 12, 2014, was led by Auction Co-Chairs Gretchen Ake, Erica Conlon, Katie Freiburger and President Bette Anne Du¤y. The evening began with a champagne toast in celebration of the newly renovated Auditorium and a “never-before-seen” student performance on stage. New this year was silent auction bidding via iPads and smart phones. As part of a North Shore tradition, members of the senior class assisted with acting out many of the auction items on stage. Next, guests progressed to the redesigned Arts Center where they visited the new visual and performing-arts spaces to receive a “passport” stamp and be entered in a raºe. Other favorite activities included a raºe for a visit to a 17th century villa in Tuscany and the “Heads or Tails” game to win a GoPro helmet camera. The evening continued with a bu¤et dinner catered by Bergho¤ Catering & Restaurant Group. It was a fun and relaxed evening for parents, former parents, trustees, alumni, faculty, sta¤ and friends to gather and celebrate the completion of the renovation projects. Since 1981, the Benefit Board, formerly the Woman’s Board, has raised more than $5 million through their annual auction to support areas of the School not covered by the annual operating budget. Our North Shore community greatly appreciates the Benefit Board members for their continued commitment to our students and faculty.
