JOANNA TROLLOPE
INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF CITY OF FRIENDS TALKS WRITING, READING, AND LITERATURE’S COSIEST CORNERS. What is the best piece of writerly advice you’ve received? I used to think it was all those mantras about making the reader unable not to turn the page . . . But now I rather prefer any exhortations about treating writing as a serious profession, like any other. After all, it’s how I, and many others, earn our living, and deserves respect accordingly. Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with? Right now it would be Ian Drury or Dave Brailsford who coached the UK cyclists in Rio, to ask them about their clearly spectacularly achievable methods. But normally, I would say a bunch of eager and articulate children from all walks of life. What keeps you awake at night? Any anxiety to do with the family. Who is your favourite fictional hero? Someone I can imagine talking to. So maybe Pierre from War and Peace. Or Tom from Tom Jones. And for a bit of dangerous and fascinating cleverness, Count Fosco from The Woman in White.
What novel would you give to a child to introduce them to literature? I think there are two answers to this question. If I wanted to get a reluctant child reading, I’d suggest Harry Potter. But if I wanted to expand the imaginative horizons of a reading child, I’d give them Philip Pullman and Anthony Horowitz and Arthur Ransome and Elizabeth Goudge and Rumer Godden and Michael Morpurgo and Noel Streatfeild. Just for starters, that is. What books are on your bedside table? Well now. To be completely honest, the pile by my bed currently contains the following: Shakespeare’s Sonnets A fat volume of short stories by and about women, chosen and edited by Victoria Hislop. A House Full of Daughters by Juliet Nicolson. Antony Beevor’s account of the campaign in the Ardennes. The Past by Tess Hadley. A Penguin Classic of Lermontov’s A Hero of Our Time. In These Times by Jenny Uglow.
You’re hosting a literary dinner with three writers. Who’s invited? Hmmm. Difficult – because I’d like them to be good company in themselves, and also generous in conversation. So I will raise Anthony Trollope from the dead, and add Emma Donoghue and Robert Harris from the living. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from a book? I suppose that Life, and all its treacheries and joys and disappointments and satisfactions, happens to absolutely every single one of us. Which creates a huge bond with all humanity – admirably expressed in fiction. Which fictional place would you like to visit? There are two fictional places, both rather cosy. One is Mole’s burrow in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows, and the other is the Hons, cupboard in Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love. All that sisterly gossip. All that warmth. All those pillows. And in Mole’s house, all that orderly security. Beguiling! What are you working on now? Oh dear. I have never been able to talk about work in progress. I suspect it’s because of a superstition that if I talk about it, it will vanish. All I can say is that it involves a very current family problem – and that it will be out in February 2018.
Mothering Sunday by Kazuo Ishiguro.
