2) Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with? Harry Styles of One Direction would be nice! 3) What keeps you awake at night? If I am writing the first draft of a novel, I lie there thinking about my characters and what they did today, and what they might do tomorrow. They are real to me and I’m constantly surprised at the things they do.

International bestselling author of The Seven Sisters series talks writing, reading and getting stuck in a lift with Harry Styles 1) What is the best piece of writerly advice you’ve received? My first US editor taught me the importance of ‘less is more’, and to ‘edit, edit and then edit again’. As a result, when I send in the initial manuscript of a new book to my publishers, it rarely needs any material work.

4) You are a mother to four children. How do you free up space for writing books? I have to take myself off for two or three weeks at a time and live like a hermit, writing eighteen hours a day. Once this is finished and I’m on to the technical editing stage rather than the ‘creative’ part, I’m able to work from home. However, like any working mother, I’m permanently exhausted and perform the usual juggling act that any mother with kids and a full-time job will recognise! 5) What novel would you give to a child to introduce them to literature? With my own children it was Winnie the Pooh, Beatrix (and Harry!) Potter. 6) What books are on your bedside table? Currently it is Louise Penny’s series featuring Chief Inspector Gamache in Quebec – I have read all of them in the last few months.

The Seven Sisters 9781447218647 B Format Paperback Available Now £7.99

7) You’re hosting a literary dinner with three writers. Who’s invited? Assuming I can bring them back from the dead, I would love to entertain Scott Fitzgerald and Oscar Wilde, and JK Rowling. 8) What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from a book? As a child I loved CS Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and at the time I didn’t realise that Aslan was a Christ-like figure. I learned then that in life there can always be love, forgiveness and redemption – sentiments that feature strongly in all my own books. 9) Who is your favourite fictional hero ? The fictional character I would most like to meet is Pa Salt, the father of the adopted girls who make up the cast of my latest seven-book series The Seven Sisters, based allegorically on the myths of the famous star cluster. He’s an extremely enigmatic and mysterious man, rather like my own father . .. 10) What are you working on next? I have recently finished writing Book 3 of The Seven Sisters series, The Shadow Sister, and have just been to Australia and Thailand researching Book 4, The Pearl Sister.
