“The experts believe that we have a chance to get rid of it for good by undertaking phased eradication. If we don’t take this one chance, the disease will spread and the risk of it eventually affecting many of our herds is high. Hawke’s Bay farmers do trade a lot of cattle, with us having milder winters and early spring growth, sometimes these can be very short trades.” Mr Wade adds that it is imperative that all movements, regardless of how short, are recorded so that tracebacks are accurate and timely. This incursion also has raised the issue of stock moving between blocks under the same ownership, and these too need to be recorded to a specific location. “Biosecurity is becoming more and more of a focus on-farm with issues such as BVD and Theileria also posing concerns. There is advice on the B+LNZ website about how to manage the risk of bringing cattle and calves onto your property. “Our thoughts and support go to the affected farmers, we know how difficult it will be to hear this decision so remember you are not alone and there is a range of support options available for you.” Meanwhile, the fight against Mycoplasma bovis is escalating with 50 more staff, a new field HQ and the appointment of a science adviser, says agriculture minister, Damien O’Connor. He says 25 new Incident Control Point managers have begun work after completing training. These case managers are appointed to work oneon-one with affected farmers under movement controls. They support farmers with information and advice on the practical aspects of the controls.

Pay attention!

Matt Wade, Hawke’s Bay Federated Farmers vice president

“A further 25 will undergo training in coming weeks, greatly boosting capacity to help those farmers affected by the disease. The 50 new Incident Control Point staff are on top of the 250 at the Ministry for Primary Industries already undertaking this work. MPI’s compensation team was also recently increased from 22 to 30 and is expected to double in size as the response progresses. “MPI has also opened a new Field HQ in Cambridge. Newly appointed science adviser, Dr John Roche, has been tasked with researching new tools for the fight against Mycoplasma bovis. He has a PhD in ruminant nutrition from the National University of Ireland and has most recently worked as a principal scientist at DairyNZ and adjunct professor in animal science at Lincoln University. “He will provide strategic science advice across MPI, and his first task will be to head up a new Mycoplasma bovis Science Strategic Advisory Group.”

Long Term Plan proposals

May 2018

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has confirmed a range of proposals outlined in its Long Term Plan, called ‘Facing Our Future 2018–28’. It has spent the last two days hearing verbal submissions and deliberating over 569 submissions received from the public during its LTP consultation phase. The regional council’s proposals include a strengthened environmental focus, with emphasis on land, water and biodiversity. The plan includes upscaling and accelerating work in land and water management, with stronger regulation and more incentives for change, a sustainable homes programme, consolidating civil defence funding and a focus on community partnerships to achieve change. The plan sees an increase in the average rate by around $1 a week per property in the coming year, with a 14.2 per cent increase — with a focus on environmental priorities, plus 5.2 per cent dedicated to the regional civil defence rate. “It was great to have the community so interested in our plans for improving Hawke’s Bay’s environment. We have listened and deliberated over all of the submissions, and as a result, there have been some changes to our plan. I personally have been challenged on two matters after hearing and reading submissions,” says HBRC chairman, Rex Graham. “The Council is aware the rate increase will be difficult for some, and

it will be proactively communicating payment plan options to the public.” The key proposals approved are: The council has agreed to borrow up to $35 million over the next 10 years, to provide incentives to change in the form of interest-free loans for Farm Plans and subsidies for riparian and reforestation. It agreed to spend $650,000 over three years to establish and operate a ‘future farming’ initiative to lead on-farm research innovation. It is to fund additional biodiversity and biosecurity initiatives and agreed to a 2.9 per cent increase in rates for 2018–19 to cover increased costs in regulation (planning, consents, compliance and science). The council has agreed to borrow up to $13 million over the next 10 years to provide financial assistance packages to allow 1,300 homes in Hawke’s Bay to become more sustainable, such as solar heating. The scheme will be fully cost-recovered, so there is no impact on the ratepayer. Council has agreed to take full responsibility for collecting a single regional rate for civil defence. The plan is for households to be rated just once by the regional council for all their civil defence rates. The council agreed to spend an additional $384,000 in year one of the LTP to grow capacity and partnerships

MANUKA HUNTERS

for co-governance and comanagement with tangata whenua to better meet council’s obligations. Council consulted on stepping back funding of Hawke’s Bay Tourism by $1.8 million over the next three years. After considering all the submissions, it will only reduce funding by $300,000 in year one, keeping funding at $1.52 million for the first three years of the LTP. It has asked Hawke’s Bay Tourism to investigate other funding avenues, such as a bed tax. The council agreed to join the Local Government Funding Agency as an unrated guarantor. This has no impact on rates or debt but gives the regional council access to lower interest rates for borrowing. The Long Term Plan will be adopted at a council meeting on June 27, 2018.

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

SHOWCASING TO

THE WORLD BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

This is part two of Cheryl Eldridge’s story of being passionate about a rare breed of grey sheep and New Zealand wool. With her husband Barry, she has diversified the farming activities on their property Stansborough Station and developed the breed, which is now called ‘Stansborough Grey’.

C

heryl and her two sons personally sort and class every fleece into three shades of grey as the sheep are shorn. This is done twice annually to keep the quality at its best for textile production. Cheryl has a background in the creative arts, along with daughter Kiri, and designs all the fabrics, accessories and finished product range. “The wool comes in dark, mid and silver grey, and within these preselected tones there is a whole spectrum, which creates the marvelous, almost metallic sheen,” says Cheryl. “I started working alone, in a shed with one loom, and now have six historic looms and a wide blanket loom, and we

are training a couple of apprentices to pass on the knowledge we have. “The yarn is better spun as fine worsted, and then it is combed to enhance the lustre. The demand for the fibre is such, that we cannot supply generally because all our yarn is used in-house.” The fibre can be woven, knitted and felted, and all processes are used to produce the unique Stansborough designs. The yarn is taken to the Stansborough Mill in Wellington for weaving. The looms at the mill weave their own strands of history, dating from the early 1890s. “They are amongst the first mechanical looms ever designed and

SAFETY

The forest industry has invested millions making our forests safer to work in. Most of our harvesting operators are working inside specialised machines, instead of wielding chainsaws like they all used to. Our serious injury rate in forests has fallen. add, rather than detract, from the general impression of intense individual involvement in production. Depending on the complication of each different weave, it can take two days to hand thread and set up each loom before weaving,” says Cheryl. “This intensity of involvement is in all parts of the process between farm and final products that are totally distinctive. Our inspiration for designs come from the environment in which the animals are farmed, tree barks, leaf forms and stunning vistas. Our team have spent years developing the many complicated undulating twill derived and other weaves, and our resulting fabric has a unique handmade and natural feel, quite different to other mass-produced commercial products.” The fabric has beautiful draping qualities, enhanced by the careful — sometimes created by hand — finishing to emphasise the lustre, drape and handling. “We have travelled the world and opened the markets up and we do a lot of high-end quality designs for international clients, but 50 per cent of our business is still national.” Throws, ties, scarves, wraps and cloaks have been fashioned from the gleaming Stansborough fabric. “We have worked a lot with the movie industry: including producing garments and items for the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Spartacus, Pete’s Dragon, The Water Horse and Kidnapped. It has been an honour to present New Zealand creations to the world. I believe wool has been underrated as a natural product — we could be using the lower grade wool across the country to make healthy and sustainable insulation for every home and slippers for children in schools and the elderly. “The value of it being breathable and environmentally friendly, safe, fire resistant and healthy is important to many people. We are looking after the planet long-term by using natural fibres — people want things that will last in their homes for years to come and have something to snuggle up and you get natural comfort from wool — unlike

man made fibres. You can use so many different types of wool — it just needs good imagination — our grey wool can be mixed with other fibres, including Alpaca and bamboo, and we want to use hemp in the future. “Wool absorbs energy and when used in carpet, you don’t get the gases that carpet glues used in synthetic gives off. Cheryl has worked furnished super yachts, boutique lodges and designer homes in New Zealand and overseas. Their designer blanket range has been gifted to VIPs worldwide, and has the backing of Campaign for Wool — led by Prince Charles. The Stansborough label is now recognised on the world stage for its innovative and highly prized, sustainable, textile creations. “We had no idea the results would be seen on cinema screens around the world. “The Lord of the Rings movies was our ultimate challenge, but now exporting to growing high-end markets is our

biggest achievement. We are pleased we found that flock of grey sheep, now registered as a wool breed in their own right, ‘Stansborough Greys’, when the downturn happened in farming in 1991 “The many years of selective breeding and hard work has certainly paid off and it is wonderful to take New Zealand to the world.”

When Alvin and Tricia Watson took over Orcona Chillis ‘n Peppers in 2014, they already knew and loved the products, as well as the lifestyle and location of the property, and they looked forward to doing something completely different from their interest in growing hydroponic lettuces.

T

he business started in 2000 and produced a range of 12 different chilli varieties for sale to local restaurants, retailers and through Orcona's stand at the Hawke’s Bay Farmer’s Market. The plants are grown in 2,500 square metres of greenhouses at Pakowhai in Hawke’s Bay. Since 2005, the Orcona brand has grown to encompass an expanding range of 100% pure chilli-based relishes, sauces, pastes, and dried chilli products. All products are produced in Orcona's commercial kitchen, with no added bulking agents, preservatives,

artificial colouring or flavouring, and they are gluten, wheat, and dairy free. They range in flavour from sweet and mild to medium or extreme, designed to suit almost every palate and every occasion. Orcona is the only New Zealand producers of Smoked Paprika Flakes, which is produced in a special process using manuka wood, a renewable native timber with aromatic properties, which produces superb flavours. Buying the business was to be a change of pace and a step towards retirement for self-employed plumber Alvin, with Tricia taking a back seat The Watson family Group: Scott, Oscar, Tricia, Alvin, Lucas and Kristie

and maintaining her full-time work in natural health. It soon became apparent that with the many facets to the business and labour intensiveness, in season particularly, that Tricia needed to give up her fulltime job to manage the business, with Alvin managing the growing side. They now have family involved to share the workload. Son Richard works seasonally, and daughter Kristie recently worked picking, packing, labelling and helping

in the kitchen. She designed the Facebook page and website and was the brains behind the award-winning Chipotle Relish and the newest product, Smoked Capsicum Relish. Kristie also encouraged the entries in the Mr Chilli awards which resulted in seven awardwinning sauces. Son-in-law Scotty has also helped when needed with season planting, picking, and at the farmer’s market, with grandchildren Lucas and Oscar lending a hand with labelling.

May 2018

Chillies ready for harvest

The business employs one permanent part-time staff member, and in season an extra one or two people to help with picking and pruning duties. It is very labour intensive as plants grow on strings so need to be constantly wound up as well as pruned to encourage goodsized fruit. This season they have reduced chemical spraying, using only Neem oil, which resulted in fewer bugs and better quality fruit. The main antagonist is psyllids, which saps the plant — they

also produce a sticky residue, which turns into black mould that needs to be washed off. Alvin and Tricia adhere fully to the Orcona philosophy of full flavour, 100% pure products, and maintain Orcona’s position as the premium brand of New Zealand chilli products. They are looking forward to being included in an episode of Pete and Pio’s Kai Safari in the near future, a TV show, which showcases Hawke's Bay food producers.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Inversion helps to:

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

9

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns This is pure logic, if a machine is out of quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight repairing itself, however if the wear and which restricts the flow of blood and lymph tear on the body is greater than the body’s through the muscles so toxins build up, ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. Most people come see us at one of our local roadshows, with serious neck issues see a large you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain. improvement after only one treatment.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

HAWKE’S BAY FARMING LIFESTYLES

Who are you going to call? Considering the contractors

The farm environment can be a hazardous one, and health and safety considerations extend to all personnel involved in agricultural and pastoral activities. This obviously includes contractors and subcontractors who play a major role on farms. Farm owners’ and managers’ responsibilities extend to the health and safety of everyone who works on the farm — full-time, parttime, casual employees, contractors and their employees, subcontractors and consultants. Worksafe NZ has laid down guidelines for both principal and contractor. Contractors and subcontractors have the same duty of care to their employees as any other employer. Contractors need to know what the principal’s (farmer’s) health and safety procedures are so they can assess their employees’ safety on-site. Farm owners and managers must work with contractors to make sure they share a common understanding of the hazards that workers face and how the site will be made safe. “Such things as forecast drought and the lower forecast milk price could see some farmers under huge pressure,” says Rural Contractors NZ president, Steve Levet.

“However, there are things on-farm that have to be done — no matter what — such as supplementary feed and crop harvesting. Contractors are professionals and are especially set-up to help out when these jobs need to be done on-farm.” Rural Contractors is the only national association and the leading advocate for rural contractors in the country, and while accrediting members to provide assurance to farmers of the qualifications and reliability of its members, the organisation also monitors central and local government policies, plans and proposals on behalf of its membership. It also maintains close relations with a wide number of organisations, government departments and other national bodies. This assures best practice when the contractor, staff and machinery move onto the farm. RCNZ represent the interests of contractors engaged in a wide range of activities such as land development, drainage, fencing, cultivation and planting, harvesting of crops, highway vegetation, parks,

Look after your plumbing All farms and rural properties at one time or another have waterworks issues, maintenance or upgrading of equipment necessities and engaging a master plumber is your best guarantee of quality workmanship. Dairy systems, water pumps, drain laying, septic systems, irrigation, water tank installation and household plumbing all need expert knowledge. No matter how skilled one is at maintenance in the home, and contrary to what some people think, plumbers do far more than just sink and toilet repairs — they work to ensure your home is protected from water and plumbing related accidents, like pipes bursting in winter or flooding. With their expert knowledge of plumbing systems, they can run a plumbing inspection on your home, cowshed or other situation and come with the tools needed to fix the issue then and there. If you have a leak or plumbing fault, instead of messing around with your own pipes and systems, a professional will know exactly where to start looking and how to fix it. If a leak is a full-blown flooding or burst pipe, they will also know how to change the entire pipeline, and know the safety procedures to undertake. Hiring a professional means that the job is done efficiently, without wasted time and money. Master Plumbers is a national membership organisation that represents excellence in the plumbing, gasfitting and drain-laying trades. It

Those important jobs by Ann van Engelen

When it comes to owning rural property, the responsibilities and maintenance can seem endless, and when ensuring things are done correctly, it is best to enlist the help of qualified professionals when the job at hand is out of your experience. With winter fast approaching and the weather becoming more unhelpful, now is a good time to check the state of your trees and check your waterways are clear. Hiring an experienced contractor means you have access to all of their knowledge — not just for land-clearing issues, but often tree maintenance and removal, drain and waterway clearing as well as other miscellaneous tasks at hand, which can often be dealt with by the one person. Have the contractor come in and check your large trees for safety, particularly if you are relatively new to

the rural lifestyle. Removing or trimming them before the wet weather hits can save a lot of damage and stress. Falling trees can endanger your life as well as your livestock, break fences or buildings and block waterways meaning the job becomes much more major and costly. Bringing in a contractor to help with silage, lucerne or haymaking requirements can save time and money on equipment. They can help from the cutting to the wrapping and stacking, freeing you up to take care of your everyday jobs. Clearing drains is easy when someone has the right machinery and experience to keep your water flowing throughout your land. A blocked creek can cause intense flooding and animal loss not to mention the risk of damage to equipment and buildings. Keeping waterways clear from debris such as fallen trees or sludge build up helps maintain more than just the water channel, it helps avoid many a negative experience. Installing new power poles and the like

Working with balance

by Ann van Engelen

Health and safety is something we are all aware of and keeping our health at an optimum level is important to everyone in our lives including staff, contractors, neighbours, friends and family. Taking care of ourselves and those around us should be our number one priority and ensuring we take time out needs to be a regular thing, and there are a variety of things people are doing off-farm during the various cycles of the year, which in turn helps keep our minds that much clearer. DairyNZ research shows there are key contributors to a person’s overall wellness and it will be a different experience that will work for each person. Some people enjoy catching up with other farmers and see how they are doing things differently and have a healthy discussion over farm systems to keep on top of their game — whilst others attend events. Fishing is often referred to as a calming activity and is on many a calendar at least once a month, even if it is just for a few hours. The costs are minimal, and you can go alone, with friends or family. The same goes for surfing — a few hours out amongst the waves is often referred to as exhilarating and calming. Hunting, playing sports or going for a bike ride with the family are also recommended activities. Some families eat dinner around the table most nights without technology present and they each share one good

thing and one bad thing they experienced that day. This provides an opportunity to know what each person is up to. Have a budget and plan set in advance, so you know your financial position and if necessary, discuss succession plans and the future of the farm, so your family know where things are headed. During calving or lambing, some people stop and spend a few minutes each day watching the babies play whilst others walk on the farm as often as possible. If you are out for the day, have good sustenance with you in the form of fruit and nuts, sandwiches and healthy food and don’t forget the water or health tonic to stay hydrated. No matter how busy things get, stay connected to your friends and family and have time for a laugh with mates. Having good friends and support ensures the not so good times are easier to handle. If you or someone you know needs help, your local doctor is a good place to

Understanding osteoarthritis by John Arts

Part 2 Last week we saw that damage to specialised cartilage cells called chondrocytes was the first step in the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Research suggests that chondrocytes can be damaged by physical damage from accidents or gradually probably from insufficient dietary antioxidants. Cartilage is a tough matrix that includes living chondrocytes. The matrix of cartilage is a combination of proteins (mostly collagen), glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and water. The most abundant GAG is chondroitin sulphate. In my opinion, adding correct amounts of high-grade chondroitin is the single most important part of OA therapy. Cartilage is 80% water, which is why it acts as a shock absorber. GAG such as chondroitin readily attracts water. This is an important reason to stay well hydrated — a real problem with our ageing population. Cartilage then has two main components. What you see is the tough cartilage matrix. What you don’t see is the tiny chondrocytes tucked away in tiny cocoons called lacunae. When working properly, chondrocytes act like repair kits for cartilage. They actively

secrete new cartilage matrix when damaged or worn. My nutritional therapy for OA is firstly based on protecting chondrocytes by adding antioxidants. These include curcumin from turmeric but others such as trace minerals like selenium and grape seed extract. We then add compounds that help stimulate chondrocytes to make cartilage especially chondroitin but also glucosamine. I have one client who had a damaged shoulder and hip. Both caused him real problems. We increased antioxidants and added my joint complex, and he reports he is largely pain-free. I like to initially add 1500mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine with about 400mg of 95% curcumin extract (from turmeric). This is usually sufficient to start the healing process and often bring significant relief. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. We’re changing our name From the Selwyn district in the south to the Kaipara district in the north, and to farms as far-flung as the Wairarapa to Cape Reinga, people have come to rely on the accuracy and oldfashioned journalistic values of NorthSouth Multi Media. These publications — Lifestyle editions for Northland, Waikato, Taranaki, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa — equate to one of our newspapers being delivered to a home two and a half million times a year — each one locally owned, staffed and operated. That’s a big responsibility, but one, which our team of journalists, designers, writers, salespeople and administrators are proud to accept. Now we’re changing our name to reflect our core principles — as of May 8 we are Integrity Community Media. General manager, Deb Wright, says that she’s proud of the Integrity ‘family’ — looking back with accomplishment on how far the business has come and investing in big plans for the future. “Changing our name to Integrity shows we’re different, our customers and readers are key — without their trust, we don’t exist. That’s why I’m pleased to work with a team who truly believe in the

value of what they’re achieving each edition.” she says. The ownership and staff of the company will all remain the same — and remain 100 per cent Kiwi, in the face of multinational competition. We’re also holding true to the old-fashioned principles of truth, accuracy and relevance in the press. In a world where internet pundits and self-proclaimed experts vie for their preferred political spin, and the outright trivial has become ‘news’, Integrity Community Media will always stand out as different. As a reader, advertiser, organisation, business, sports team, club or charity represented in our pages, you can count on that spirit being carried on — with Integrity. Thank you for your custom and support in the past — we look forward confidently to our future in business together.

New regime for primary industries

17

by Ann van Engelen

The government’s signalled changes to the Ministry for Primary Industries to create four new branded business units have now taken effect in fisheries, forestry, biosecurity and food safety. Dan Bolger has been appointed as the head of Fisheries New Zealand. He will also retain his existing role of deputy director-general, Fisheries. “Fisheries New Zealand will lead our management system to ensure the sustainability of our fish stocks and play a key role in protecting the marine environment, and will set science-based rules, monitor our fisheries and lead engagement with everyone who has an important stake in our fisheries,” said Mr Bolger. MPI remains the competent authority for all trade activity in the primary industries and work carried out internationally will remain associated with the MPI brand. “You will start to see the Fisheries New Zealand brand rolled out around the country over the remainder of the year. Our website has a dedicated presence for Fisheries New Zealand, which you will be able to find at fisheries.govt.nz.” The first step in re-establishing a forestry service was launched in Rotorua with prime minister Jacinda Ardern and regional economic development minister, Shane Jones at the launch of Te Uru Rakau where the name and new branding was unveiled. “This government has been clear about its commitment to New Zealand’s forestry sector and the One Billion Trees planting programme,” said Mr Jones.

“I believe Te Uru Rakau will play a key role in supporting and promoting our vision for a flourishing forestry sector, delivering sustainable jobs in our regions, forestry workforce development and training and economic growth while helping meet our country’s climate change targets. Mr Jones says Te Uru Rakau will build a strong and dedicated forestry presence in Rotorua, recognising that Rotorua is at the heart of the forestry sector in New Zealand. “Forestry is our third largest export earner — with an annual gross income of about $5 billion — and has the potential to grow. I am pleased to be able to announce that Budget 2018 will set aside $15 million of operating funds to boost the capability of the new service, enabling it to work with landowners, provide forestry expertise and deliver on the government’s forestry objectives. Food Safety New Zealand was established along with Biosecurity New Zealand. “In the spirit of hospitality, our food safety system cares for the people producing and processing food, as well as those consuming it. It protects consumers at home and abroad by ensuring that food grown, harvested, imported, processed, transported, stored, exported and sold is safe to

eat,” says Agriculture and Biosecurity minister, Damien O’Connor. “The integrity of the food safety system is particularly important to New Zealand because we are a nation of food producers and exporters, and we are trusted across the globe. “I have asked New Zealand Food Safety to work on five priorities to make compliance easier for businesses — particularly for small, regional or rural food businesses including providing guidance to market stallholders, rolling out templates to reduce costs and allowing those operating under several food safety laws to have one plan. On the new Biosecurity unit, MPI is continuing an intense programme of work with farming sector groups about the next best steps in the response — including containment and phased eradication. “Testing to date shows all infected properties are connected in some way. The tracing of Mycoplasma bovis is made harder by the poor use of the national animal tracing system. We could have tracked this more quickly if the system had been used properly. We will make changes to the NAIT system,” says Mr O’Connor. MPI and DairyNZ have boosted the number of people working directly with farmers to assist in that process.

Reduce winter nitrogen loss The coldest months of the year are just around the corner, so farmers should be particularly cautious when applying nitrogen fertilisers to pasture or crops. “Winter applications of nitrogen fertilisers are generally the least effective for promoting grass growth. That’s because slow growth of pasture in winter and greater drainage can result in nitrate leaching before plants can take it up,” says Waikato Regional Council sustainable agriculture adviser, Bala Tikkisetty. “The nitrogen may make its way to waterways where it can stimulate nuisance algal growth. Lactating cows excrete, in urine, about 70 per cent of the nitrogen they consume. Again, the risk of this nitrogen leaching from urine patches is much higher in winter.” Bala says some of the research to mitigate nitrogen losses has focussed on: growing pasture with more rooting depth for interception of nitrate, reducing the amount of time animals spend on pasture and feeding high-sugar grasses

to reduce the amount of nitrogen lost in urine. “Nutrient budgeting using computer models such as Overseer, combined with feed budgeting, enables farmers to understand whether they are using too much or too little fertiliser. By doing this, farmers can optimise the use of nutrients and reduce the impact on the environment by working out a pragmatic nutrient management plan. Understanding the term ‘response rate’ helps farmers when it comes to implementing these plans.” The response rate is the amount of pasture grown in terms of kilograms of dry matter (DM) per kilogram of nitrogen (N) applied. When 20kg N/ha is applied and an additional 200kg DM/ha of pasture is grown the response rate is 10kg DM/kg N applied. “The response is dependent on several factors such

as soil temperature, plant growth, soil moisture, the deficiency of available nitrogen in the soil and the rate of nitrogen applied per application. “The best response to N fertiliser occurs on fast-growing pasture when other factors such as moisture and soil temperature are not limiting growth. Response rate variation also depends on the season and on nitrogen application rate. In winter, at the same application rate, responses are lower and slower than other times of the year. “It is better to apply nitrogenous fertiliser when the pasture cover is 1,500–1,800kg DM/ha. This ensures that there is sufficient leaf area for photosynthesis leading to good pasture growth. Remember that the profitability of applying nitrogen is dependent on the

utilisation of the extra feed. Therefore, nitrogen needs to be strategically applied to fill genuine feed deficits. Reducing nitrate leaching by adapting grazing systems to alternative plant species and cultivars has been a major focus of research in the recent past. “Plantain emerged as an important pasture herb that has a proven ability to reduce nitrate losses. Plantain reduces the concentration of N in the animal urine and allows plants to take up a greater proportion of the N, which in turn reduces leaching. “I am happy to say that a number of farmers, as well as industry organisations, are already doing a great job trying to increase productivity and reduce environmental impacts through more careful use of nutrients.”

Classic rock solo by Andy Bryenton

Of the entire new Holden Commodore range — a noteworthy first departure from the days of Australian design and production, but one with its own sense of style — there’s one vehicle, which stands out as still forcefully Kiwi. Or, to be generous, a bit Aussie too. That car is the Holden Commodore Tourer, a four-wheel drive, V6 turbo powered station wagon which bucks all kinds of trends. Firstly, it’s a station wagon in a world gone mad for SUVs. Sports utilities from the tiny to the gargantuan roam the roads in packs these days — Nissan’s catalogue, for example, features two sports cars but a whole family of crossovers and full-fledged S-Us. We have been told for some time now that the station wagon is headed for the scrap heap of history, and that the big four-door sedan is following so close behind you’d think it was being towed. Not so, says Holden, boldly putting forward a brand new car in 2018, which manages to evoke those summer holidays in the back of the Berlina while being utterly light years ahead of those old wagons of yesteryear. The new Commodore may be just as German in its underpinnings as an Audi Avant or a big Merc, but it just feels right for our local roads. The price is right too when compared to other large ‘estates’ from Europe, all of which top $100k in local dollars. And while the option for a roaring V8 behind the lion badge is gone, the able and willing turbocharged V6 you’ll find in Holden’s tourer more than gets the job done. Most of those ancestral dad-owned Holden, Ford and Chrysler station wagons were straight six affairs anyhow — and lacked the fuel economy, real-

world power or nine-speed automatic gearbox of this modern iteration. That’s the other thing you’ll notice about the Tourer — badged with the evocative name of Calais on these shores. There are a whole lot of bells and whistles included, which those old station wagons we remember lacked. Not just seats made of a kinder material than scorching hot summer vinyl — remember that? No, there’s also a
