The three-day event, which aims to promote excellence in the dairy industry, will begin on Wednesday, January 29 with an extensive range of show classes and competitions.

Dairy New Zealand chief executive officer Tim Mackle will officially open the event during a welcome dinner held in the evening.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Originally called the Southern Region Agribusiness Field Days, the event began in 1984. Although there was a period of time when the field days weren’t held, the event returned permanently in 1993.

Central Districts Field Days event manager Cheryl Riddell said a great deal has changed over the years, including permanent infrastructure such as roads, power and water.

“In the early years, there was no permanent infrastructure.

“We had to dig and lay hundreds of metres of power cables in every year.”

The Central Districts Field Days are now known as the largest regional field days in New Zealand.

“The field days are a premium marketing opportunity and we have a great line-up of exhibitors and competitors’ returning to ensure this is the best day off the farm all year,” said Ms Riddell.

More than 38,000 visitors attended the field days this year. Ms Riddell hopes

with the event celebrating 21 years in 2014, and a growing list of exhibitions, visitor numbers will continue to rise.

She said many of the old favourites are returning, along with some new attractions which will appeal to farmers and rural townies.

“Re-bookings are going very well with more than 75 per cent of previous exhibitors already on board and with just over four months to go, I am sure spaces will continue to fill fast.”

Ms Riddell said she is delighted Massey University has come back on board to sponsor the Massey University Agriculture Pavilion.

“It’s great that Central Districts Field Days has survived and grown stronger.

“We call it ‘the best day off the farm all year’, as farmers do put it on their calendars to come, check out new inventions and make their purchases.”

The Central Districts Field Days will be held at Manfeild Park in Feilding from March 13–15, 2014.

A FAMILY CONNECTION TO ANGUS

Angus cattle have featured on the Rowe family’s property near Hunterville for almost 60 years, stretching back to when the late Lloyd Rowe senior established Merchiston Angus Stud in 1955.

W

ith a firm stud foundation set, Lloyd eventually handed over the reins to his sons, John, Richard and Lloyd in the 1980s.

The brothers, fourth-generation on the family property, currently farm the 910 hectares together.

Initially founded on 10 cows purchased from the Tarangower Stud in the King Country, the bulls bred at Merchiston were sold at the combined Taihape Beef Breeders Sale for many years.

Richard said during the mid 1990s, following the purchase of Makino Station near Raetihi, a change of cattle policy occurred.

A 200-cow commercial herd, which ran alongside beside a smaller Angus stud, was sold.

“It had become uneconomic to run commercial cows on this type of country and the boys decided to double the size of the stud herd to place more selection pressure on the female base,” said Richard.

“In 2000, Merchiston moved away from the Taihape Beef Breeders Sale to begin selling on-farm in its own annual bull sale.”

Richard said the 1,600 hectare Makino Station serves as a feeder unit of store stock to fatten at Merchiston.

“Merchiston has moved from a straight breeding property to a breeding, finishing, cropping and stud cattle business, with some tourism thrown in,

in order to stay adaptable to changes in financial returns.”

Close to 3,500 Romney ewes, 220 Angus stud breeding cows and associated replacement stock are currently farmed on the property.

A further 50 Angus stud breeding cows are run on a satellite property, Glencorran Farm owned by Mike and Kate Gee Taylor, near Rangiwahia.

“Now approximately 50 Merchiston females are being run and bred on a commercially run sheep and cattle farm, taking the number of females at our disposal to over 260,” said Richard.

“Each year, the bull calves will be purchased back by Merchiston, and Glencorran will retain all the females under the Merchiston prefix.”

Richard said this will give the stud an ability to have access to more bulls to select from and increase the quality of the sires offered for sale in the annual bull sale.

Since the first on-farm sale of close to 30 bulls at Merchiston, this coming year will see 50 rising two-year-old bulls catalogued for sale in June.

“This is alongside the private sale of 25 to 30 yearling bulls sold annually to beef herds, mainly for heifer mating,” said Richard.

“The selection pressure now being placed on the female herd, along with identification and crossing of outstanding cow families, has resulted in the Merchiston herd being in better shape than ever in its nearly 60 year history.”

The Rowe family place a high importance on, and a thorough usage of, estimated breeding values (EBVs) in its programme.

“We take particular care in the phenotypic value of every animal sold so as to keep a type that Kiwi cattlemen can relate to and do the job for them,” said Richard.

cattle breeding as is possible. This approach seems to be working as the Merchiston Bull Sale annually continues to build and go from strength to strength.”

Over the past 27 years, Richard has chaired the New Zealand Beef Expo, been president of Angus New Zealand and is a foundation trustee of the New Zealand Angus Youth Charitable Trust.

He is presently the vice-chairman of Performance Beef Breeders New Zealand (PBBNZ) and has just completed six years of organisation, along with other committee members, of the World Angus Forum which was held in Rotorua in October.

Richard said it was a great thrill to be part of the International Youth Challenge during the recent World Forum where Merchiston Stud supplied a team of four yearling heifers for the Australian team.

“To get to know these young people at the top of their game, being some of the best young handlers in the world, was very rewarding for us and leaves me in no doubt that the future of this great breed is in good hands.”

growing a tonne of food

A

After setting a goal to grow 1,000kg of food this year, Foxton woman Cynthia Hancox is close to achieving this target.

s well as feeding her family and gaining valuable gardening knowledge along the way, Cynthia is sharing her experiences to help others grow their own food.

Cynthia’s earlier attempts to start vegetable gardens over the years were hampered by a number of issues.

“I’ve always liked the theory of gardening, but have only really dabbled in the practical,” said Cynthia.

“I married at 19, and we have moved house many times — something like 24 times in the first 17 years of our marriage.

“I started lots of vege gardens but they always got left for the next person to benefit from, so in the end I gave up.”

In 2011, Cynthia once again found herself thinking how she would really like to grow food. With five children, including a daughter with severe food allergies, Cynthia began to research the

origin of food, how it is grown, processed and produced.

“I came to realise that so much of the so-called food we buy from the supermarket is just not good for us, or for our environment,” she said.

“In addition, we are a low-income family, and it’s getting harder and harder each year to make ends meet.

“I was consistently over budget when it came to buying groceries, and that was just not sustainable.”

In late 2011, a group called Horowhenua Kaikai formed in the district. This one-year programme with District Health Board funding, aimed to encourage people to become healthier by growing some of their own food.

Members were given some free tools and seedlings.

Cynthia joined the group for encouragement and motivation. She then cleared four existing small raised

Fresh is better — and nothing is fresher than produce grown at home, the old fashioned way

intention was to get those eight beds laid out and planted and then see where we went from there.

“I knew if I sat down and worked out a plan, I’d get bogged in my perfectionism again, so decided I’d wing it and learn as I went along.”

The family’s property size measures just over one acre with access to graze their sheep on neighbouring properties, bringing the total area to three acres.

Initially there were masses of dock, buttercup, couch grass and uneven surfaces to contend with. The area was also prone to flooding.

Cynthia weeded out four beds, started to plant, and set a goal. Inspired by an American woman who had grown 1,000kg of produce, Cynthia decided to do the same.

By April, all eight bed-frames were in place. Cynthia refers to these as the 12 main vegetable beds. She also put down a no-dig potato bed in one corner and dug up strips on the front lawn to plant sweet corn. Zucchini was planted on the site of an old shed that had been removed and a couple of rampant pumpkin patches also began growing.

“Despite the drought and water restrictions, most things did really well last summer, and I also learned a lot about what doesn’t work so well,” said Cynthia.

“When summer ended and the corn, zucchini, pumpkin and potatoes were harvested, I let those areas go back to lawn for now and concentrated on my 12 main beds over winter.

By the end of September, Cynthia had harvested over 655kg of produce.

“I am working on planning a four year rotation in the main beds, but haven’t worked the finer details out yet.”

This spring Cynthia has expanded the garden areas, digging up a big patch of lawn to plant potatoes. Trailer-loads of sawdust and manure have been collected from local stables for compost.

Cynthia plans to dig a pond and swales to help with drainage and water retention. She also aims to plant a

wild corner to encourage beneficials.

After researching and experimenting with planting by the moon methods, Cynthia noticed a huge difference in plant growth. This year she has continued to follow the moon calendar for planting.

Cynthia is finding growing fresh, organic food for her family is very rewarding.

“It’s a slow but steady move to greater self-sufficiency,” she said. “There is a profound sense of satisfaction in knowing that everything on your plate comes from your own land.”

While our farms are drying up due to the hot, dry weather it is making the stock feed supply decline and recently harvested supplements are already being fed out by farmers.

Last week we met our legal consultants in Auckland who specialise in dealing with banks.

It is surprising the number of actions that are currently against the banks, taken by individuals who claim that they have been wronged. Some of these claims now amount to some millions and there has been some success in actions that have been taken, where banks have not followed the due process that is required of them, when lending out their money.

Bank clients do have the right to seek a review as to whether the bank has followed due process, in their particular borrowings.

We all know there have been a significant number of farms coming on the market and are being sold at less than the bank’s mortgage.

While we accept that people should be prudent in their borrowings and seek the appropriate advice that they can afford to borrow the money, there have been cases where bank lending personnel have processed the loans without acquiring the independent

valuations and the projected income streams have been overly optimistic.

There is case law that shows that Banks can be liable where it has been proven that they have not followed due process in their lending and have become a contributing factor, in setting up clients to fail.

The big news this week was the 24 year prison sentence that was dealt to Allan Titford following a recent court hearing dealing with a multitude of charges.

I personally was involved in seeking a settlement package for Allan Titford and the Aranga farmers who were affected by the Waitangi Tribunal recommendation that their land be returned to Maori claimants.

It came as a big surprise to me, the actions of Allan Titford and the charges

made threats against the Prime Minister of the time.

At the time I maintained that Allan Titford’s behaviour resulted from the pressure that he was placed under, due to what we all believed was a threat against his property rights.

When one looks at the charges that he has been convicted of, I can only say that I hope that Mrs Titford and her family receive the necessary support that they deserve.

Her apology to the Te Roroa people says it all.

Paul Mason has been following the Albrecht system for 20 years

The directions to Paul Mason’s 1,600 hectare farm near Dubbo, New South Wales, were: “Just follow the road until you get to the green farm.”

Paul’s farm stood out like a bean. All the other farms were grey and brown and dismal looking. We were a group of Kiwi’s, passionate about better soil fertility. Besides internal tours, that journey has taken us to NSW twice, Victoria and across United States of America so far, but Europe and South Africa are on the radar over the next few years should anyone else be interested in joining in.

Paul is one of the best known stock finishers in Australia. His Hereford stock are frequently sought by competing buyers. Some 20 years ago, he was in a local book shop and came across Neal Kinsey’s Hands-On Agronomy so he bought it. After reading it he phoned Neal and was soon on his way to Missouri, to attend his first introductory soil course, ‘Principles of Soil Fertility and Fertilisation’.

Paul entered the local area wheat competition and won it after six years on the programme. That was the year he finally convinced himself to add trace elements.

He had already found that adding lime to increase the base saturation calcium from 60% to 68%, on a Perry Lab test, raised his yields by 25%.

That winning crop was 108 bushels per acre, or 5,786kg per hectare.

His farm is a cropping, sheep and cattle operation. Annual rainfall is 600mm. Crops include wheat, canola and lucerne. His canola this year is almost two metres tall, and cleaned up all comers in his area. His neighbours withdrew their crops from competition as they were damaged by frost.

Paul’s crop was not.

It’s not a fluke — it is just good crop nutrition, and Paul’s crop yielded 3t/ha, complete with frost. On average Paul’s results are 25% better for canola and 40% better for wheat than the neighbours. The protein, once 11% is now 14.5%.

Paul buys up to 650 steers for fattening. Prior to changing to the Albrecht soil fertility system, his results were 350kg carcasses in 15 months at a 54% yield. After changing, the results were 370kg carcasses in 12 months

at a 57% yield, and still improving.

Besides the shorter fattening period, the extra return on those cattle at $3.80/ kg is $76.

With 650 cattle, that is an extra $49,400. The cattle are transported to Brisbane where Paul commands a higher price for his quality product.

In addition, he now grazes 1,000 wethers at $1/week for 24 weeks.

That’s another $24,000.

Without boron, the plant cannot transfer sugar from leaves to the roots.

In animals, boron helps regulate both Ca release into the blood and Ca absorption. Boron helps convert Vitamin D into an active form which facilitates Ca absorption. Silicon and calcium together are cell strengtheners but they both require boron to deliver their benefits.

Boron encourages silica to form silicic acid which then moves into the plant to form nutrient highways which then help to move the poorly translocated calcium into the plant. Required at 2ppm in the soil.

Cobalt The B-Group vitamins are arguably the most important nutrient deficiency in the soil and in humans.

Krasilinokoff measured soil fertility based on the relative presence of B vitamins.

Microbes cannot manufacture vitamin B12. B12 comes from cobalt and Co is ignored in many soil programs. Vitamin B12 is a major human deficiency (over 74%) Cobalt supports nitrogen fixing organisms. Vitamin B12 is important for fertility, cellular longevity, nutrient absorption and metabolism of fats and carbohydrates. Ketosis and Johne’s disease may be related to cobalt deficiency. The ideal human intake is 1 mcg daily. Ruminants require from 0.10-1.0 ppm in their rations. Cobalt is important for the growth and vitality of rumen microorganisms.

Symptoms of a deficiency include poor appetite, decreased milk production and rough coat; also lack of nodules, or small white nodules on clover.

Sources of cobalt include Cobalt sulphate added to the soil, trace mineralised salt and vitamin B12 supplements. It is required at 1-2ppm in the soil, but rarely is at this level. We add 1kg of cobalt sulphate per ha if the budget allows.

There are no unimportant nutrients. Some are just required in smaller amounts than others.

A dull brown coat indicates a lack of copper.

Copper Copper is the element linked to protection from fungal disease. It is the “protein nutrient”, increasing the uptake of ammonium form of nitrogen; it is essential for chlorophyll production, sugar synthesis and root metabolism, and it increases stalk strength and elasticity.

Although necessary for some microbes, Cu can also have a fungicidal effect in the soil.

Copper is widely used and abused as a fungicide resulting in a toxic build-up in the soil, but Humic acid can help to buffer the microbekilling effect. High copper also antagonises phosphorous, iron and zinc. Get copper into the leaf by way of building soil levels, rather than onto the leaf as a more sustainable disease control option. Cu sprays on the leaf cause a physiological change which may make the leaf more susceptible to disease agents.

Cu is critical for iron transportation in the blood and formation of hemoglobin, and is an anti-oxidant It is also critical in the formation of the myelin sheath and is associated with elastin. It is a component of catalase and tyrosinase.

Ruminants require 25-100 ppm in their feed; human optimum daily intake is 2-4 mg/day Organ meats, shellfish, legumes and mushroom are rich in copper.

Cu is an important coenzyme linked to immunity and detoxification.

Symptoms of deficiency include severe diarrhoea, abnormal appetite, poor growth, and a course bleached coat. Split bark, lodging and brittle branches result from Cu deficiency. High OM, Mo, Fe or sulphur can induce Cu deficiency, as can excess phosphate.

Sources of copper include copper sulphate, licks, powder, blocks etc.

Copper Sulphate can be added to troughs at 1gm/1000lt to control algae or 4gms/1000lt as a supplement. It can also be applied as a paste (2%) to control ring worm.

The minimum soil level is 2ppm; but get to 5-10ppm for better plant and animal stock health.

Zinc Zinc is the “energy micro-nutrient” required for correct functioning of many enzyme systems, being an important enzyme activator, second only to magnesium in terms of the number of enzymes to which it is linked. It is essential for phosphorous uptake, and is needed for ADP and ATP production. It regulates plant sugar and transforms carbohydrates. Zn is critical for uptake of moisture through roots.

Zinc is required for synthesis of nucleic acids and is critical for soil organisms. Crops sensitive to Zn deficiency are; maize, linseed, green beans, fruit crops, pastures and cereals, (being involved in filling grain properly).

Zinc governs the production of auxins which determine leaf size, starch formation and may give the largest response of any trace element. Zinc must be properly matched with phosphorus in the soil.

If P is high, Zn needs to be high. If P is low, Zn needs to be low. If they are out of kilter, the high one can block the low one.

Zinc antagonises iron, copper and sulphur so these should be “background nutrition” if they are marginal when applying zinc.

Cu fungicides can induce a zinc deficiency. Zinc is essential to cell growth, replication, sexual maturity and reproduction. It works alongside Vitamin A. It is essential to the immune system, natural killer cells and the thymus gland. It improves disease resistance, reproduction and reduces skin and feet disorders.

Zinc deficiency is directly linked to prostate cancer and breast cancer (our two largest cancers) Ideal human intake is 15-20 mg/day. Cattle rations need to have 50-100 ppm.

Beef, shellfish, cheese and dark chocolate, leafy greens are rich in zinc; it is needed for the healing of wounds and for robust rumen organisms. Symptoms of zinc deficiency include decreased weight gains, lowered feed efficiency and poor wound healing. Required at 6-19.5ppm in the soil depending on phosphorus levels.

Boron ‘The Steering Wheel’ Boron (B) is necessary for uptake and efficient use of calcium in the plant. It is a calcium synergist and a temperature regulator. Boron is essential for cell division and development, particularly in the growing points of shoots and roots, also promoting flowering. It affects pollination, pollen viability, fruit and seed set. It is required for the movement of sugars (e.g. energy) within the plant and hence plays a significant role in photosynthesis.

Typical Boron deficiency symptoms include: hollow stems in cabbages and cauliflowers; woody taste in strawberries; poor seed set generally; crosswise cracking of celery stalks; external and internal cork in apples; lop-sided fruit and heavy fruit shedding of citrus; ‘shot’ berries and poor fruit set in grapes; flower shedding with deformed and bumpy fruit. It also affects growing tips (i.e. dieback) and leaves. Small clover leaves may indicate B deficiency.

In the soil B is an anion and therefore is found mainly the soil solution or complexed with humus.

Marine soils may have high B reserves. Deficiencies can be worse in long dry spells and in high pH soils. Kiwi Fertiliser recommends Organibor, a natural magnesium-calcium borate from Argentina.

It’s no surprise that the maker of these tough and versatile little machines didn’t want to tinker too much with a winning formula, and so with minor stylistic changes the recipe has remained evergreen for many years; a reliable, kick-started air-cooled motor wedded to a chassis able to take the off road knocks, and a suspension setup with plenty of travel to iron out the bumps and jumps.

Once again another year has flashed by but all in all we have found it to be an extremely positive year with only a few bumps and bruises which happens every year when business is expanding.

Our Te Kauwhata plant is pumping away under the guidance of Peter Boldero, the plant manager, who sets a high level with his fertiliser blending skills and special mixes. In the deep south, business is booming to the point where we have outgrown the building we were leasing and have purchased our own industrial site of 1.6 hectares in Mosgiel, giving us plenty of room for expansion. Our main man Darryn Graves has been cleverly balancing production, making the shift to the new premises and helping customers with their fertiliser needs, with the skilful art of a juggler keeping everything on the move with his positive attitude and friendly manner.

The administration staff at headquarters in Tauranga have once again kept our business on course and moving in the right direction. We have had a few changes with our sales representatives during the past 12 months, for one reason or another; however the outcome has been positive – gaining new sales reps that have a passion for soil health and healthy animals – the future looks bright!

Grasslandz a unique event

A new event on the pastoral and agricultural calendar, Grasslandz is set to take place at Hamilton on Thursday and Friday, January 30 and 31, and it is an event with unique points of difference over other field day static shows.

There will be live demonstrations of all manner of agricultural machinery, from hay and silage gear, drilling and cultivation, as well as earthmoving and stacking, across 24 demonstration sites ranging in size from 0.5ha to 4ha, and a site covering 65ha.

Organisers say the key advantage for ag machinery manufacturers and importers is the concentration of a target audience.

The January dates have been chosen as they line up perfectly with the Northern hemisphere indent ordering cycle. For the bulk of New Zealand’s machinery to arrive on a dealer’s doorstep ready for spring delivery, early autumn is when most manufacturers require orders to be placed.

Grasslandz is an opportunity to show off product to potential customers and get orders placed in time.

Event manager Andrew Reymer, was born and raised on a dairy farm in the Waikato and has been around the industry all his life. He has been involved with the New Zealand Fieldays on the ag and tractor pull committee — as chairman for six years — for over 20 years.

Those who oppose supplements rightly state that most New Zealanders do not have outright nutrient deficiencies. The hoof trimmers’ tools

This month I am talking to you about the tools that we use when we trim, with particular focus on knives.

These are the most important tool that you will use and it is important that they are used correctly which means they need to be kept clean and sharp.

We get a lot of knives of varying quality

sent to us from all over New Zealand to be sharpened. The main thing that determines quality is the hardness of the steel used. The harder the steel the longer it will stay sharp. Most knives are made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is relatively hard and therefore will keep its edge reasonably well. However, some of the cheaper stainless steel knives are very soft and will go blunt quite quickly.

Often farmers will buy these cheaper knives because they tend to be used for many things other than hoof trimming and it becomes quite expensive if you have to keep replacing them. The better quality hoof knives are made of hardened steel.

These knives will stay sharper for much longer than stainless steel knives, but they will rust if they are not kept dry.

Because they are so hard they can break easier than stainless steel knives so it is important to use the right trimming

technique. The horny tissue needs to be sliced off not broken off. What I mean by this is that many people tend to start a cut and then part way through twist the knife so as to cause the hoof to break off rather than making the slice clean.

Generally people are not even aware that this is what they are doing, but it is something I encounter frequently when running training courses.

When we trim cows it is important that our knives are sharp. We wouldn’t like it if a surgeon performed an operation on us using blunt knives. Not so much because it is harder work for the surgeon but more because the end result is not the same.

This is the same for cows. If we use blunt knives we are more likely to cut ourselves and the trimming job is not going to be very successful. By using sharp knives you can be much more precise with less effort. Sharpening knives is, however, not the easiest thing to do. It takes a lot of practice

and patience. We use a bench grinder with a linishing belt. This will sharpen the blade and create a nice bevel. The angle that you put the knife onto the belt will determine the angle of the bevel.

As a rule of thumb, this bevel needs to be a minimum of 10mm. Many of the knives you can buy have a much steeper bevel than that which makes the knife much more difficult to use, giving you less control with your cutting.

We sharpen the hook of the knife on a rubber disc attachment on our grinder.

You can sharpen the hook on the outside if you wish, but you should NEVER sharpen the back of the blade.

If you do, you end up having to tilt the knife when trimming and it is much more likely to cut into the hoof rather than taking a slice off.

I know it is very tempting to touch up that side of the knife because it is easier to get a sharp edge but you will ruin the functionality of the knife. (to be continued…!)

Wool Perspective From Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool

Supply vs demand imbalance keeps prices up During the past few weeks and up until writing, the crossbred market in particular continued to surge ahead with new highs achieved at every wool auction. Exporters battled each other to gain supremacy in the auction room often with ‘buy at best’ instructions leaving a distinct sign of ‘blood on the floor’. Whilst growers pondered whether local wool merchants were offering good prices at the farm gate, real values in the auction room were rapidly surpassing the country prices, a reflection of the supply versus demand imbalance. Slow bidding in the auction room and clearances of 100% in some broker catalogues, certainly told the story of a strong market.

Crossbred fleece prices bolted past the 600 cents per kilogram clean mark at Christchurch on October 24 and then on October 31 in Napier continued their onwards charge. Another lift was apparent for crossbred fleece types on November 7 in Christchurch, however a few of the finer crossbred hogget types

struggled to keep pace — perhaps a sign that the market had been a little ‘over-cooked’. Early-shorn crossbreds were not far behind the full length fleece for price, and second-shear types were only slightly off that pace. Bulky oddments drew good attention from the buyers’ bench with many romping home at very good odds indeed compared to body wool prices, with some of the shorter types sprinting home with prices which were reserved for fleece not that long ago.

Mid-micron types offered during the past month met with a mixed reception but true to type Halfbred and Corriedale wools definitely enjoyed the best of the market. Comment from the exporting fraternity was harshly negative towards some mid-micron wools of doubtful breeding which definitely do not perform as well as the straight bred types during processing — thus discounts were obvious for those.

Merino wool types generally met with good enthusiasm from the specialist

buyers in attendance at the Christchurch auction centre however a domination of hogget wools of average to poor tensile strength did limit buyer demand. An observation of a few merino clips throughout broker catalogues was the number of lines classed in comparison to the results achieved. Whilst it is important to ensure lines are as even as possible, the cost of testing and handling relative to the dollar value of the product must be taken into consideration and splitting lines of wool for a mere point of a micron, when in every other way the wools are similar, is at present simply not cost effective for the grower.

A number of extra-fine and ultrafine wools struggled to reach grower expectation as a glut of these types was apparent on both sides of the Tasman, and buyers had the luxury of being extremely selective when filling their often limited orders. At this time of year we begin to see wool style and

tensile strength deteriorate due to the effects of lambing, competition for feed and changing feed conditions, plus warmer weather conditions. In-shed wool handling and preparation becomes even more important during the late spring and summer months and, even in such a strong market environment, buyers will become critical of mixed length, tender, and discoloured wools being mixed together.

The basics never change — keep similar lengths together, keep sound wools separate from tender wools, remove cotts and cotted points from otherwise free grown sound fleece lines, skirt lightly to ensure length and colour remain reasonably even and remove heavy vegetable contamination.

If these basics are adhered to and you communicate with your PGG Wrightson wool advisor along with your shearing contractor well prior to shearing, the result for your efforts will be positive.

That’s my view.

The term ‘ticking time bomb’ occurred three times in the article and although it was stated that the steady increase of nitrate in groundwater levels in the Canterbury region was not solely the result of farming, there is little doubt that the increased use of nitrogen fertiliser is seen as the main culprit by most people.

Reducing the loss of nitrate nitrogen into groundwater is a necessity and pressure will continue to mount until steps are taken — it’s just a matter of how long it will take before fundamental changes are made.

It was not until 1995 that farmers in New Zealand began embracing the regular applications of nitrogen fertiliser, primarily urea from Kapuni, first manufactured in 1983 to use surplus energy from the Maui gas field.
