“Young people deserve the opportunity to do well within the agricultural industry. We need a strong long-term plan that aligns training through the school curriculum with practical experience on the farm,” says DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle. “The dairy sector is no longer a ‘no options left’ career. We know how rewarding it can be working in the dairy sector — our farmers are custodians of the land and water, passionate animal lovers, and excellent business people. “We have initiatives like the Primary Industries Capability Alliance and ‘GrowingNZ’, which promote careers in the primary sector and reach more than 60 per cent of secondary schools and 38,000 students — but we want more of these students to choose the primary sector. “Farming requires a positive attitude, determination, and tenacity. A young person with these qualities and a strong desire to learn on the job will find farming a satisfying career.”

Dr Mackle also noted that the major parties all had policies to attract young New Zealanders into work, and NZ First in particular has a focus on providing jobs for New Zealanders before migrants. “We definitely want to see more Kiwi candidates in the regions where the jobs are,” says Dr Mackle. “But until we have the Kiwi’s with the right training and passion for farming, who are attracted to rural regions, we will continue to fill a genuine need with migrant workers. Migrant workers also add diversity which is particularly important for a globally focussed sector. “By targeting the right people early on, those that want to be in farming or work in agriculture, we can ensure we are feeding the future employment needs of our country’s primary sector. “We believe that a long-term strategy needs to be developed and supported by the future government to make this a reality.”

Cull to contain disease spread Seven properties tested positive to the Mycoplasma bovis disease outbreak, and the Ministry for Primary Industries has decided to cull the infected stock following a comprehensive surveillance and testing programme. “The decision to destroy stock which have been in contact with affected animals is the only option which will ensure peace of mind for the rest of New Zealand’s dairy and beef farmers,” says Federated Farmers president Katie Milne. All cattle on five of the seven infected South Island properties will be sent for meat processing and a programme put in place to decontaminate the farms. The two remaining properties have had their animals culled already. “We also support the continuation of strict movement controls on the remaining 13 properties that have been placed under Restricted Place Notices,” says Katie. “These restrictions have significant implications for the people concerned, and all other farmers, so this action is essential to keep the option of eradication on the table. “The disease does not respond to treatment and cannot be vaccinated against. Culling is the only logical option to prevent ongoing suffering of the animals. “From a national perspective, our size, relatively low population and geographic isolation gives us the ability to manage and attempt to eradicate biosecurity incursions, when other countries cannot. M. bovis is found

in most countries, including Australia, this is a disease that we definitely don’t want and we should seek to eradicate it, if feasible. “We have remained free of many pest animals, plants and diseases that have decimated other country’s livestock industries. For the sake of our livestock industries and the economy, it is crucial we act now to ensure this remains the case.” Beef + Lamb NZ chairman James Parsons says the decision will obviously have significant implications for the farm businesses and the rural communities affected by this disease outbreak. “We wish to see all available support and compensation provided to those affected.” MPI has carried out tens of thousands of tests of the infected, neighbouring and trace properties as well as nationwide testing of bulk milk. “We encourage beef farmers to follow the recommendations on stock movement, keep an eye out for symptoms in your herd, and ensure the NAIT records for stock you buy, sell or move are accurate and complete.” “Anyone with concerns can call B+LNZ on 0800 BEEFLAMB (0800 233 352).” If you have cattle concerns call your vet first. If your vet advises, call the Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline at MPI: 0800

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

walnut trees by Denise Gunn

Moving from the city to rural life with the aim of becoming more self-sufficient, Reuben Kennedy and Kate Carter found their ideal property in the Pohangina Valley. Three-hundred mature walnut trees were an added bonus.

T

he couple bought their 60 acre block of land just over three years ago. Kate’s mother, Diane, is retired and also has a house on the property. Kate said they loved the natural outlook and endless possibilities the property presented. The walnut trees, which cover seven acres, are run as naturally as possible. During their first season on the property, the couple were set to spray the trees to protect against blight but discovered the spraying equipment left with the property wasn’t fit for the task. “The trees were too large — we had spray showering down on top of us — the sprayer could only reach the lower section of the tree and the top was completely missed out,” said Kate. The couple decided to go with a no-spray

option. Three years later, there have been no issues with the trees. “It seems as the trees get older, they are more resistant, our trees now range between eight to 13 years old.” Kate said. Annual pruning, regular possum control near harvest, and mowing around each tree during the harvest has been the only maintenance required. There are plans to review fertiliser needs this season. Harvesting starts when the first nuts start dropping around the beginning of April. The harvest continues for close to four weeks. “We try to harvest every one to two days, working our way around the paddocks.” The walnuts are harvested manually with a wire basket system which is rolled across the ground, flicking the nuts into it.

DO YOU NEED TO KNOW THE VALUE OF YOUR FOREST OR WOODLOT ASSET? ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS

WOODMETRICS CAN TAILOR A SOLUTION FOR YOU

Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Forest Valuations Woodlot or Forest valuations are undertaken for a number of reasons. • Sale and purchase and due diligence • Prospectus promotion • Asset reporting for financial requirements • Property division and equity transfer • Collateral as required by a bank • Forest Planning & Management

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

When compiling a valuation, Woodmetrics adheres to the New Zealand Institute of Forestry (NZIF) Valuation Standards- which as a member we are bound by when preparing valuations.

Market Appraisals Woodmetrics Forest If you do not require a full valuation, market appraisals are also available. This is a less detailed method of assessing value but will provide an estimate of value, along with a map, stand and crop descriptions, yield estimation and the ability to accurately describe your trees.

“We have no machinery and do everything by hand, Reuben usually gets up in each tree and gives them a very good shake which is very effective at helping the nuts fall.” Kate said. The nuts are washed by hand before beginning the drying process, then usually packaged and ready for sale about a month later. Under the label Konewa Walnuts, they are sold at local farmers’ markets and directly through email and phone orders. Three varieties are available and sold as mixed bags — Rex, Meyric and predominantly Shannon. Konewa Walnuts are couriered and sold all over New Zealand. Reuben and Kate have introduced the Nutshucker to sell alongside their nuts. This imported walnut opener works by inserting a metal blade into the join of the walnut and gently twisting. The nut effortlessly pops open and eliminates flying shards of shell and crushed kernel. Kate said the Nutshucker comes in two different styles and sells for $8.00. “We have had very good feedback, even from customers with arthritis in their hands.” Two years ago, the couple began breeding, raising and selling free range pigs which is working well alongside the walnut enterprise. The pigs — Durocs, Saddlebacks and some upcoming Large Black and Berkshires, graze under the walnuts for most of the year, and are removed a couple of months before the nuts fall. After harvest they are returned to clean up the last of the nuts. “This reduces the amount of pests such as rodents

and possums,” said Kate. The couple strongly believe in raising animals humanely from growing through to collection. All the pigs are supplied with warm shelter and dry bedding. “Our motto for our pigs is ‘happy, healthy and free range’. We do not accept sacks or hog-tying as a suitable method of collection.” Although there aren’t currently any other nuts grown for the market, the couple have planted hazelnuts, macadamias, almonds, chestnuts and pine nuts. “We plan to see how they go and may look into planting more in the future.” A selection of 35 fruit trees, large vegetable garden, tunnel house and glasshouse keeps the family supplied

with ample fresh produce. It hasn’t all been plain sailing though since moving onto the property. Kate was involved in a serious car accident while she was pregnant, leaving her with a broken pelvis in several places. This, and the arrival of the couple’s first daughter, meant the walnuts were put on the back burner for awhile. Heavy rain during walnut harvest time this past season resulted in a poor quality kernel. Reuben and Kate decided to completely write off the crop and break the news to their valued customers. Despite the challenges, Reuben and Kate enjoy working outside

by Ann Morgan Whilst visiting organic farms around New Zealand some years ago, Jill Bradley and Keith Atwood discovered the importance of organically grown fruit and veges and started their family business AgriSea, producing seaweed products for the home gardener.

O

ver time a range of skincare products was created under the business Ocean Organics in 1996 as a way for Jill to have a natural hand cream made from a wide variety of New Zealand herbs. Other products have also been made available to help with skin. “Our skincare products are created from an array of high quality hand picked and hand pressed New Zealand native wild herbs, and the results are

incredible,” says Jill. “They are produced in small batches and are made totally by hand — from the picking to the mixing and packaging. “I often gardened without gloves and my hands had little infections from rose thorns and things so I needed a cream that was moisturising and healing. We set about visiting many medical herbalists to find someone we could work with on our project.” It took well over a year to find someone the couple would work with.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

Jill and Keith had two questions for each person they met with. How long have you been a medical herbalist and would you be prepared to sit with Maori experts to work with herbs of our own country? “We all hear about Chinese herbs and the European knowledge of herbs but it was the knowledge of New Zealand medicinal herbs that we wanted to integrate. Our herbs come from a perfect bush environment — grown in beautiful quality soil. We found a lady that has worked with herbs all her life and she said she would be honoured to sit with Maori herbal experts to learn from.” Jill and Keith then decided their Agrisea gardeners might appreciate the hand cream as it is not filled with chemicals and is moisturising and healing. The family then created a healing salve that has also become very popular. “It is really outstanding and a lot of people with eczema use it — it was like magic. In the early days I cleared a big bank of cleavers, and my forearms were absolutely on fire when I came in. I said to Keith I made a mistake and should have worn sleeves and gloves, so I used the salve on one arm as a test and it was an instant relief. “It has a mixture of herbs such as manuka, flax root, seaweed, rescue remedy and lavender. It is one of those balms that is good for anything and clients have said it is magic for hemorrhoids as well. A friend who had bowel cancer used it out of desperation after chemotherapy and said it was like magic and helped her get relief where nothing else had worked.” Five years later Jill’s daughter asked her to create

a face cream. “The rose and almond face cream was the very last product we made and is for our gardeners and Agrisea farmers’ wives — the men use it too. It is a truly nourishing face cream and is great if you are out in the elements. It has no chemicals in it, just herbs. “Agrisea is the family’s main business and Ocean Organics is the sideline company that is just as important, and we plan it to always be here for our customers. We refuse to have the products mass produced — I think you would lose something. Keeping it made in small batches regularly is the best thing. Even the base cream took us ages to find as it needed to be special. We found a Chinese chemist and medical herbalist and he makes it especially for us. “Having created these products is amazing, there are little stories all the time. Our grandchild uses it for eczema — a man came because the salve is the only thing that helps his skin condition that he has had for many years. Someone’s horse had an ulcer and the salve healed it. It sounds like a miracle but it really is that we have a phenomenal array of truly healing herbs, put together by a woman who knows her stuff. There is always three per cent in the world things don’t work for but for the majority it helps. It is our go to balm. “Even our Agri Sea products are handmade with wooden paddles by people — not machines. We believe if you are going to sell something to people it is very important to sell something of high value.”

Cellar door closing at

only vineyard Over the past 19 years the team at Pohangina Valley Estate has developed the vineyard and produced award-winning wines. Now the trio are hanging up their secateurs and will close the cellar door in April 2018.

By Denise Gunn

H

usband and wife, Nick and Bronwyn Dymock, initially established the vineyard in 2000. Bronwyn’s sister, Fiona McMorran, joined the family-owned venture soon afterwards. “It’s sad to be closing the cellar door but the time has come for us to retire,” said Fiona. “It has been a wonderful experience.” Although the Manawatu had never been considered a grape-producing region, the team proved otherwise. Careful planning and consideration went into choosing a suitable location for both the vineyard and the grape varieties to be grown. Situated on a north-facing,

sheltered, stony river terrace above the Pohangina River, the vineyard takes up four hectares of the 55 hectare property. The vineyard was developed from scratch with the four hectare site cleared of fences and macrocarpa trees. The trees were milled, stored and later used to build a house on the property. Bronwyn and Nick, with the help of family and friends, planted 16,000 grapevines by hand. Five varieties of olive trees, Leccino, Picholine, Frantoio, Barnea, and Koronekei, were also carefully selected to suit the property’s soil conditions, and 350 of these planted. Pohangina Valley Estate produced its first vintage in 2004

Fiona said the region’s climate is considered borderline for grapes. “For this reason, we only planted cold climate grape varieties that ripen in late autumn. “We also do everything by hand to ensure we produce and only pick the best quality grape for the winemaker.” The region’s cool climate has well suited the grape varieties grown on the property and yields have increased over the years. A large part of the trio’s success is attributed to the hands-on intensive approach to the management of the

vineyard, and the skill and experience of winemaker Chris Buring. Chris is based out of Oak House in Martinborough. Along with the main varieties of wine produced; Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, other blends have also been released including the Beaujolaisstyle red called Totara Reserve. This wine, named after the local reserve in the Pohangina Valley, is made from an unidentified grape which was DNA-tested at the University of California, Davis. It is now registered there as Pohangina Red. At the time of this wine’s release in 2008, the reserve had been damaged by floods and heavy snow storms. District Council for replanting more Totara trees in the reserve. When a purpose-built tasting room was added to the property, the team were able to open the cellar door to the public for wine-tasting by appointment. The vineyard has also been an ideal venue for concerts, garden parties and the Manawatu Walkers’ Club. “The summer season will see us open from October to April as usual but this will be the last chance to purchase wines from the vineyard,” said Fiona. “We have a number of cellar door specials and all varieties of wine are still available. We have had a great time and would like to thank all our customers who have supported us over the years.”

Getting the top quality burgers by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

Well, they have done it with milk, soy milk, now the Frankenstein meat boys are producing burger patties in a lab! I haven’t had a burger since 1997 and that was in Hollister, California. I guessed that there was a meat patty in there somewhere, but it sure as hell had no flavour, and if it did, that flavour was drowned out by the sauce. So, meat-wise there’s no competition; when the cook deals up a homemade

burger, made with a 50mm thick pure meat patty, grown on the farm, a few slices of tomato and beetroot, crunchy lettuce and topped off with a couple of dollops of homemade sauce — nothing can compete against that, That’s what the real world wants, that’s what the people want. The artificial world is becoming more and more artificial everyday, which from my perspective, opens up the opportunity for New Zealand to become the number one, top quality, food producer in the world and this will cover all markets; wine, kiwifruit, stone fruit, avocados, apples, plums etc together with all grass fed milk and all grass fed meat products and heaps of vegetables. We are isolated; we have strong agriculture and horticultural industries. We already have many tourists coming to experience our top quality foods. Our top chefs are leading the way in fine-dining with New Zealand produce. We could easily rank that up to ‘the best food on the planet’. However, to get into the top quality food market, we must first and foremost take out the synthetic, soluble, artificial fertilisers that are impacting on the soil and soil life. At the same time we must stop all use of toxic sprays and drenches.

These poisonous products are going directly into our food chain. So it’s time for producers to realign to what is happening and begin setting up a multi-mineral system with help from the micro-organisms to install a full array of minerals to help the plants fix their own immunity to pest and disease. Once the plants have immunity they pass that immunity on to animals and humans. This multi-mineral system has been around since plants first appeared 460 million years ago and that same system is here today to help install immunity. It’s no big deal, we are only going back to where we came from and when you look at that ‘chemical period’ of say 100 years of spraying plants and then you look at huge natural forests on the planet that have survived and thrived for thousands of years just by having the

mineral content to build immunity, there is no comparison. Whoever/whatever put our planet together also put together all the checks and balances to ensure survival of plants, animals and humans. In reality our planet is looking after all life on Earth. Sure it is in flux all the time, with earthquakes, volcanoes, torrid weather etc, but all in all Mother Nature looks after us well. It’s time for us to return the favour and start making choices that have a positive impact for the planet, our grandkids and great, great grandkids. The Beef + Lamb New Zealand Board has reviewed budgets and activities for the financial year commencing October 1, 2017. The sheep meat levy on all sheep slaughtered would remain $0.60 per head and the beef levy, on all cattle slaughtered (including beef cattle and dairy cattle but excluding bobby calves), at $4.40 per head GST (exclusive). “We have recently completed a consultation round with farmers where we asked for feedback on our updated strategy through to 2022 and also what we are committing to in the year ahead,” says B+LNZ chairman James Parsons. “Farmers have reinforced the issues that matter most to them and have given us strong direction. “Some key areas are improved promotion of our products in partnership with processors, better extension and an influential voice with government to ensure farmers’ backs are covered on issues such as biosecurity, environment and compliance issues. “It is pleasing to see farmers are getting real value out of our recent workshops and seminars across some of these key issues, particularly health and safety and environmental planning, and they want more.” He says there is also a big ambition and urgency to see the New Zealand red meat story told, ensuring urban audiences and global customers understand the sector, its value and market difference. “Farmers want to promote the value of New Zealand’s natural pasture fed beef and lamb and high-quality farming systems and draw in consumers with that story, especially as synthetic proteins emerge more into the market.” The environment has emerged as a concern for farmers, particularly around water quality and farming. “Farmers want better connections with all New Zealanders and ensure they better understand that farmers value the environment, and are making big efforts to protect and enhance it. “At the same time, they want support for more actions and solutions, more environmental planning workshops and tools to help measure the impact of what they are doing to improve the environment and more engagement with government to ensure practical policies are in place.” He says the newly refreshed B+LNZ strategy for the next five years reflects farmer feedback and sets a vision, priorities and goals to achieve by 2022. “Ultimately, it is about profitable farmers and thriving rural communities valued by all New Zealanders. That is what farmers want and they have given us fantastic feedback to ensure we are focussed on what matters to get there.”

AG CONTRACTORS Time for a specialist They are the professionals who farmers trust to boost their productivity and secure a season of healthy profits — across all kinds of agriculture, from dairy to beef farming, through to crop cultivation and laying in silage for the winter. New Zealand’s agricultural contractors are hard at work this spring taking care of those big jobs on the farm which have often become too large or too specialised for individual farmers to handle alone. In years past the average Kiwi farmer relied on four-legged horsepower and a suite of simple machines and hand tools to run every aspect of the operation. But as technology has increased and science has made farming more intensive, contractors have stepped in to fulfill many specialist roles in the seasonal cultivation of the land. This is never more apparent than in the

spring, when big machinery is often seen working its way across the land. The cost inherent in the complex, custom-built machinery used for such tasks is now beyond the reach of many farmers. Their answer is calling in specialists. They come with the advantage of indepth knowledge and lowered overheads for farmers. It’s sound economic sense to hire in a contractor with a huge silage wagon coupled to a 200-horsepowerplus tractor, rather than purchasing the same machinery and having it lie idle in the barn over the winter. Good contractors know their area of expertise

well, and are trusted by their clients to take care of the big jobs, leaving farmers free to attend to other aspects of their business. Dams, effluent ponds, roads, races, pads and even the sites for new sheds and homes are all prepared by specialists. Many contractors have their own limerock quarries for just this purpose. A key role in modern agribusiness is played by science — and at the forefront of agricultural chemistry are those professionals who maintain the correct nutrient balance in the soil to guarantee fertile crops.

Just as important as the heavy machinery which tills the fields is what goes in before the seeds are sown, and it’s standard practice for fert companies to send representatives versed in soil science around to visit their customers and draw up detailed fertiliser spreading maps. Today in Manawatu there is a thriving sector of the agricultural industry — one which is sure to become even more vital to the Kiwi economy as farming becomes more intensive, more scientific and more reliant on cuttingedge machinery technology.

Staying safe on the job With the start of Daylight Saving WorkSafe New Zealand has suggested now is the time to check your sleep schedule to ensure you’re getting the right amount of sleep to keep both yourself and others safe. Agricultural contracting relies heavily on the weather and so does the farmer who more often than not, will need to prepare the ground beforehand. When a fine spell hits the pressure is on for both to complete the task at hand. Often the farmers are out later due to the extra hours of daylight to prepare paddocks before crop or to get the last of the silage completed before the rain shows itself. The contractors are wary of the list of farms they need to service within a tight timeframe. As a result the pressure can easily amount to stress and working big days leading to tiredness. With large machinery involved it isn’t a great combination. “People who are tired and fatigued are 30% more likely to have an accident. Both businesses and workers have a responsibility to manage fatigue and the risks that arise from it,” says WorkSafe chief executive Nicole Rosie. “Work and personal demands can often make it difficult to get the sleep we need to function safely throughout the day,” Ms Rosie said. WorkSafe has a fatigue quick guide

with information for businesses and workers to explain their respective responsibilities to manage fatigue. Fatigue is a work-related health risk if it reduces our ability and alertness to work safely and effectively. It can affect people’s feeling of wellness and wellbeing and impact productivity. It can also lead to safety incidents. This may lead to errors and an increase in workplace health and safety incidents, with potentially serious consequences for both workers and businesses. “According to our 2015 Health and Safety Attitudes and Behaviour Survey, 43% of workers in sectors with a high risk of injuries and fatalities reported working when overtired,” Ms Rosie said. WorkSafe is currently working with other regulators including the New Zealand Transport Agency, Civil Aviation Authority and Maritime New Zealand to look at ways to better support workers and business to manage fatigue in the workplace. The aim is to develop key cross-industry information for businesses, workers and their families about how to recognise and manage fatigue in the workplace.

“Bees are extremely good pollinators of crops, so contribute substantially to New Zealand’s multi-billion dollar agricultural economy,” says Agcarm chief executive Mark Ross. He says that agrichemicals are vital for ensuring the security of our food supply and, when used responsibly, “pose no threat to our bee population.” But “we must remain vigilant and address any potential risks to our bees.” The campaign was launched in September to coincide with Bee Aware Month as well as the peak sale of agrichemicals. “Although the message is always relevant,” says Mr Ross. “It’s important for manufacturers’ of agrichemicals to have clear label statements regarding A IN &

safety precautions for their products, including describing how to protect our pollinators — like our members do.” Rural Contractors New Zealand chief executive Roger Parton emphasizes the importance of adequate training for people applying agrichemicals. “Correct application is as important as using the correct agrichemical,” says Mr Parton. He advises using registered chemical applicators for spraying to ensure the safety of bees and people. MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES OCTOBER 2017

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

Civil Defence is raising public awareness and the message should be loud and clear to all farmers that getting accustomed to Civil Defence planning and preparedness should be a priority. “No one can predict when the next natural disaster could hit. If there’s a big earthquake it is possible a tsunami could come. A volcanic eruption say in the Central North Island can not be ruled out either,” says Federated Farmers vice president Andrew Hoggard. “Be prepared and get informed. The flooding events this year are a wake-up call and they are still having significant impact on farmers and their communities. If you are not considering a plan to get you through, you are potentially risking your business and livelihood.” Farmers should be prepared to meet the challenges thrown up by not only our country’s variable climate, but also the active nature of its geology. “Consider the worst case scenario and identify what would be a priority,” says Andrew. “Talk through with your staff potential situations. Something could happen while you are off-farm and they will be left to deal with potentially a crisis. It is possible the farm could get isolated and so consider what that means for staff.” Federated Farmers has been actively involved in the response and recovery following the recent Otago and Bay of Plenty flood events and, last November’s Kaikoura-Hurunui earthquake. One consistent theme has been loss of power which has effectively

immobilised affected farms in the immediate aftermath. “We know from experience that when an ‘event’ happens rural people are generally the last to receive help. This means vital infrastructure such as power and phones can be down for weeks. “You are likely to wait indefinitely if your situation is considered not life-threatening. “I recall the 2004 lower North Island storm when we lost power for three days. Luckily we had an old generator to keep us going. We have since upgraded to a more powerful one now — I just

could not contemplate not having that plan B. “We also have an analogue phone that doesn’t rely on power, and these days you can charge cell phones in cars and trucks, and remember a spare full gas bottle for the barbecue.” Andrew recommends farmers also check what is insurable. You might be surprised what you can insure. “You might not think it is relevant beforehand but you may want to get an idea where you stand with those farm assets. Like all good scouts will tell you — be prepared.”

The forest industry says when a new government emerges from coalition talks, it needs to put a much greater focus on forestry particularly with direct government planting. Forest Owners Association president Peter Clark says this can be in consulation with iwi and it is also vital to encourage other investors and farmers to plant out forests. He says there are potentially many different ways to structure incentives for more afforestation and the Emissions Trading Scheme is still a potentially powerful instrument for enabling the government to meet its Paris Agreement commitments on climate change. “ETS clearly needs change, but the scheme never has been and never will be enough to meet the challenge of increased afforestation by itself.” “Other critical components are leading by example, enhancing training and recruitment, providing extension services for forest management, introducing equitable rules between different land uses, conducting long term planning and getting an urgent start to

major afforestation. The government says it intends to use an expansion of New Zealand’s plantation forest area through the ETS to sequester carbon and so help New Zealand meet its Paris Agreement commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Mr Clark says the forest industry accepts the direction of the recent London based Vivid Economics Report that the New Zealand plantation forest estate would have to expand by up to 1.5 million hectares for New Zealand to meet its Paris targets, rather than spending billions on offshore carbon credits to try to achieve that result. “The government can take a lead in getting trees into the ground itself. It is difficult for iwi, drystock farmers and forest companies to take the government’s position on more trees seriously when the government ignores the opportunity of its own agencies and landholding to show how it can be done, at least in the initial stages.” he says. “Some local government land would be suitable as well, and I’ve noticed local government leaders have just

called for what they term ‘an urgent need for responsive leadership and a holistic approach to climate change.’” He believes there needs to be more effort to attract new recruits into the industry and getting them trained.

New Zealanders have always used wood for our one and two storey homes. But now, architects can specify modern timber fabrication to previously impossible heights. Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials. Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon. All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

“We are as much to blame as government in neglecting this area. We have just left it to individual companies to organise training and so we are addressing that ourselves now at a more collaborative level. If we don’t get new and trained workers we will find our industry seriously short of the workforce we need in future.” “For farmers contemplating planting trees we consider the government should make it easier for these farmers to receive the right advice on whether to plant trees in the first place, where to plant them and how to look after them. Our experience is that too many farmers make an investment in trees, which is a land use commitment for nearly three decades, and then ruin it, by, for instance, planting trees with inferior genetics or where they can’t construct a road access to get the logs out.” “Next there are different sets of rules, at both national and local government level in particular, on what different land uses and discharges are acceptable. It’s not just taxing greenhouse gas discharges through ETS, that is important, but having the same rules for everyone when they discharge into water, be the land use forestry, dairy farming or horticulture.” “In a similar vein, and directly applicable to the ETS, the government

needs to acknowledge that all the carbon in a tree is not immediately lost when a tree is harvested. So that means the carbon liability at harvesting can be deferred to account for some carbon stored in furniture and buildings for decades to come.” If forests are to expand then the infrastructure has to be planned and enabled at the same time. “The infrastructure in some regions, such as East Coast, is struggling to cope with the present volume of logs being transported. If the total forest estate is to be nearly doubled in the next few years, then we need government-led planning and potentially legislative change for constructing or facilitating road, rail, and port infrastructure.” “If we see significant development in most of these areas, then I’m convinced will send signals to timber processors they can be confident in investing in efficiencies and modernising to utilise an increased timber resource and meet the demand for processed timber products for domestic and export consumption. There doesn’t need to be an export tax or export licences to achieve this. We have to wait until next year before the current ETS review reports back to the minister and for the Productivity Commission enquiry into a Low Emissions Economy.

In the meantime, no extra trees are being planted. The age of a tree is critical in the sums to work out whether New Zealand will reach the 2030 target. A 12-year-old radiata pine, for instance, locks up six times the amount of carbon a six-year-old pine will. While we appreciate the need to have robust reviews, some early signals on the direction of travel could encourage planting in 2018 or 2019 rather than delaying that decision until 2020 or beyond.”

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

No consents required Waste is turned into compost

Uses no chemicals Uses no water

No plumbing No smell

DOES IT SMELL? Only if you want it to. The separation of the liquids and solids that is part of the Air Head design ensures there is no “dunny” smell. The composting material in the base of the toilet is dampened slightly and if you include untreated sawdust the dampness gives off the fragrance of the wood..You can choose tea-tree, macrocarpa, redwood...choose your own fragrance.

HOW DOES USING A COMPOSTING TOILET DIFFER FROM A CONVENTIONAL HOUSEHOLD TOILET?

The main difference is not flushing the toilet on completion. Instead of flushing you close the lid and give the handle on the side of the Air Head several turns. Liquids flow naturally to the container in the front of your Air Head and the solids drop into the composting chamber — you simply activate the small lever by your right hip at the appropriate time to open the flap for that to happen. HOW DOES VITROGLAZE WORK?

Vitroglaze works in a similar way to non-stick cookware by filling the microscopic ridges and valleys of your glass surface. A single Vitroglaze treatment makes your glass easier to clean and will keep it looking new without the need of harsh chemical cleaners In fact, one permanent Vitroglaze treatment will reduce your cleaning time by up to 90% saving you time and money — no need to buy all those nasty cleaners that claim to clean your glass but actually may cause more damage!

WHY DOES GLASS NEED AN EXTRA COATING?

WHAT DO I DO WITH THE “WASTE” I REMOVE FROM THE COMPOSTING CHAMBER?

The composted material will be a dry, odourless, crumbly, nutrient-rich soil that is a perfect booster for your garden compost. It is only “waste” if you dispose of it. If you want to start a worm farm, here is your starting material as worms will happily further process the material to form humus which is invaluable for crop production. So, cultivate your own sense of humus! Or simply bury it in your garden and become a member of the ground-making club — naturally!

The seemingly smooth surface of glass actually consists of microscopic ridges and valleys and is considered porous. Some shower cleaners, along with contaminants such as soap scum, body fat deposits, lime scale, hard water deposits and all manner of other grime, makes the surface look dull. Vitroglaze acts as a barrier for your glass and ‘smooths’ its surface, inhibiting the growth of these contaminants and protecting your glass against harsh cleaners that can corrode and pit.

WHAT IF I HAVE AN OLD SHOWER?

The good news is that Vitroglaze can also be applied to existing glass. In many instances, glass can be restored to look like new, then Vitroglaze can be applied to keep it looking that way!

What makes your newspaper different from the competition? Quite simply — we're here to grow your business. NIKAU HILL NURSERY Take some of the unnecessary work out of gardening and spend more time growing and enjoying the plants that you love. Q. What is the best fertiliser or compost to use? A. For most soil types and situations, extra fertiliser is unnecessary in flower gardens. Just return plant material to the soil, either by composting it to spread around in Spring, or by simply cutting it down in early Spring and letting fast new growth cover it up. Nature will do the rest. Q. I love the look of Delphiniums, but won’t they blow over in my windy garden? A. Not usually – the plants & stems are much stronger in modern types. Rather than stake them, plant them a little closer together. Q. l Like to browse the garden centres for plants, but never have enough time. Online shopping sounds good, but isn’t it expensive? A. Not at all. Online nurseries save in overheads so can pass the savings on to customers. Also look for good freight deals, at Nikau Hill we charge $12 per order for as many large, gardenready plants as you want, anywhere in New Zealand.

We have the readers — You have what they need. Let’s get together! Phone: 0800 466 793 W: nsmm.co.nz | E: info@nsmm.co.nz

WHY DO WE NEED RESIDUAL CURRENT DEVICES? We have requirements to install on a standard installation, a 30Ma rcd. This will protect all concerned by tripping and isolating the power to the appliance and installation, giving added safety for adults, children and animals.

WHY INSTALL LED LIGHT FITTINGS? There is an increased demand for led lighting, especially on farms, in cowsheds and domestic installations. If the whole country could change over to LED lighting the national power grid would have colossal savings.

WHY USE A SAFE POWER ACCREDITED ELECTRICIAN? A safe power accredited electrician has gone through an audit to make sure he has the latest up to date regulations for the type of work he is doing, also all his test equipment has been calibrated so they are working correctly. A safe power electrician will guarantee his work when done. “Totally Dependable” On call when you need us:

Aussie regains shearing title Australian shearer Damien Boyle won a seventh New Zealand Open Merino shearing championships title in eight years at the opening event of the 2017-2018 shearing sports season in Alexandra. Shearing on stand No 5 in the final in Molyneaux Stadium, against five others who have all represented New Zealand in trans-Tasman shearing tests, Damien needed the best of the quality points after being well-beaten on time by Invercargill shearer Troy Pyper who was facing down the board from stand No 6, and just pipped by Alexandra veteran Dion Morrell on stand No 1. From West Australia, and shearing in his trademark sling to support his back, 39-year-old Damien had won the final, six times in a row from 2010-2015. Southland shearer Nathan Stratford restored the Kiwi pride with a popular victory last year at the start of a season in which he went on to win a World team’s title in front of his home crowd in Invercargill. Damien dominated results from the start, being top qualifier for the finals after 30 shorn in the heats. He was also top qualifier from the semi-finals. When all time and quality points were calculated last night, Troy had to settle for second place and Nathan third. Colin O’Neill of Alexandra, was fourth, Chris Vickers of Palmerston, fifth, and Dion Morrell of Alexandra, sixth. Nathan, Colin and Dion grabbed one back for their Kiwi fans when they won a trans-Tasman Merino test match against Damien, Beau Guelfi and Callum O’Brien. World champion woolhandler

Joel Henare from Gisborne, started his new season with two wins on the way to a target to reach a career tally of 100 Open final victories, now over 90 to his name. He regained the fine wooled Merino championships’ Open woolhandling title, with a win over runner-up and 2015 and 2016 winner Pagan Karauria, daughter of shearer Dion, and also beat Karauria and Te Kuiti woolhandler Keryn Herbert in the Golden Fleece Woolhandler of the Year final. Father of three, Joel turns 26 later this month, but has spent almost half his life in open woolhandling competition, fast zeroing-in on becoming only the second person to win 100 Openclass titles. Third place in Saturday night’s final went to Monica Potae of Milton, and fourth was surprise finalist Kelly Macdonald. Ranfurly shearer Vanni Stringer won the Senior shearing final, in which Karauria put in another display of shearing sports versatility by adding a sixth-place cheque to that she won in the woolhandling. The Senior woolhandling title was won for a second time by Ebony Turipa of Gore, and the Junior title by Linda Duncan of Alexandra. The championships attracted 126 entries, with 51 in the two shearing classes and 75 in the three woolhandling classes.

Improving joints

(Part 2) A recent client had been affected by osteoarthritis in his hips and shoulders. We created a personalised joint health programme that included supplements that can help promote healing in arthritic joints. After speaking with him today he said that he is mostly symptom free. The real hero however is not so much the dietary changes and supplements but his body’s own healing processes. All disease starts with changes to cell functions. If this is left unchecked it can lead to tissue damage and eventually to disease. Our bodies have incredible healing properties that can become overwhelmed by a disease process. While physical damage to joints can cause arthritis it is important to see it as a real disease and not just wear and tear. Joint cartilage appears as tough lifeless tissue. A closer look reveals something quite different. Cartilage matrix is secreted by specialised living cells called chondrocytes. These cells maintain small pieces of cartilage. Anything that negatively affects chondrocytes will eventually damage cartilage. Lose enough cartilage and you have osteoarthritis. Chondrocytes can become damaged

by several processes. Firstly free radicals can damage them to the point that they cannot function properly. If left unprotected by antioxidants the chondrocytes will die and the piece of cartilage it maintained will eventually be lost. Secondly, corrosive enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMP’s) attack the collagen matrix of cartilage, and thirdly unwanted inflammation can damage chondrocytes. What we need to do is to protect chondrocytes, reduce inflammation, reduce free radical activity and reduce MMP activity. What this does is to allow our natural cartilage healing processes to spring to life. The result is less pain and improved mobility. The answer is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant dense diet. We then add anti-inflammatory supplements that can help restore joint healing processes. Please contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Profits improving as industry stabilises The average beef and sheep farmer is expected to earn $90,200 next season as overall red meat prices rise. The Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s New Season Outlook 2017-18 report forecasts beef and lamb prices to remain similar to the previous season despite an expected weakening of the New Zealand dollar. The report estimates farm profit before tax to increase 6.6 per cent. “This outlook sets the scene for steady meat prices and production, however strong improvements are expected in revenue from deer and velvet as production increases, and from wool, which is coming off low prices,” says B+LNZ chief economist Andrew Burtt. Earnings before interest, tax, rent and manager’s salary per farm, which provides a benchmark for viewing farms on a comparable base, is forecast to increase by 3.1 per cent to $158,800. “A slight drop in the national sheep flock was driven by a drop in breeding

ewes but this was tempered by a lift in the number of hoggets, particularly on the East Coast of the North Island.” A rise in the number of beef cattle (+2.8 per cent) was largely driven by weaner cattle being carried over into the 2017-18 farming year in response to good feed conditions and firm prices which were due to tighter availability and strong store cattle prices in 2016-17. “As beef cattle prices have continued at comfortable levels and production conditions have improved, some farmers have been motivated to increase the number of beef cattle they have because cattle are less labour-intensive than sheep.” Mr Burtt says much of the outlook depends on the value of the New Zealand dollar which is expected to ease as major trading economies strengthen in 2017-18. The New Zealand dollar

BUTCH JURGENS LIVESTOCK LTD

Andrew Burtt, B+LNZ chief economist

strengthened in 2016-17, to average 71 cents against the US dollar, up three cents on the previous season. “The US dollar is significant for New Zealand’s export-focussed sheep and beef industry because 70 per cent of meat export volume is sold in USDdenominated transactions.” Total farm expenditure is forecast to rise marginally (+0.5%) this season. Though fertiliser prices are expected to remain steady, a lift in spending on fertiliser is expected as farmers continue to focus on improving their soil’s productive capacity. The increase is expected to outweigh a reduction in expenditure on interest, and repairs and maintenance. Much of the 6.6

per cent increase in the average farm profit before tax on sheep and beef farms results from revenue of deer and velvet (+10 per cent), wool (+10 per cent) and cash crops (+4.8 per cent). Sheep and beef revenue are expected to remain similar as small increases in production and easing exchange rates counter softening export prices. While there were disruptions to the international beef market in 201617, demand is expected to remain reasonable this year, driven by China. Continuing tight sheepmeat supplies in Australia and New Zealand, particularly mutton, are expected to support prices, with exchange rates the prime uncertainty.

Brown Gold! Utilise effluent to improve soil condition. Spring — a busy time but a good time to think about the condition of your soil. With the especially wet winter we have had, a big problem many will be facing is pugging and waterlogged paddocks. Now that the weather is drying out somewhat paddocks run the risk of drying in the condition they were left in. Many will be considering working up the ground for cropping and re-grassing to try solve this problem. In many cases the soil needs to be reconditioned so that it has a healthy structure and plants can access the nutrients. One of the best soil conditioners you can get is already on your farm. Effluent and solid manures contain Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium as well as organic matter. The organic matter in effluent will improve your soil by providing a good environment for microorganisms which will help to make nutrients more available to plants as well as help to keep the nutrients in the soil and avoiding it leaching away. You may want to consider stirring and emptying your

23

Effluent is a ready-made soil conditioner and fertiliser you already have on farm

effluent pond onto cropping paddocks; this will help your effluent storage situation as well. Another valuable byproduct is the calf shed or feed pad cleanings. The high organic matter combined with the manure content are a great mulch/compost that encourages microorganism, increases fertility and will improve the soil structure. Using onfarm effluent first is very cost effective if it is built into the nutrient management plan and fertiliser programme. Your effluent is definitely not a waste product — it is brown gold. Testing your effluent for Nitrogen means you can calculate how heavy you can spread it within the consented limit and you can use the information about its minerals when looking at your

nutrient plan. By using your effluent, you can avoid using some chemical fertilisers. Some contractors can test the effluent for you in conjunction with cleaning out effluent ponds or spreading. Getting your effluent tested is an easy process and worth your while. It could potentially save you in fertiliser costs. As we hopefully see more sun and the ground begins to dry out, remember to utilise the brown gold you already have on your farm. Nigel Pedley of Pedley Slurry Service Ltd has been spreading effluent in the Manawatu and the lower North Island for 10 years. For further information, phone Nigel on 0800 Oh Poos 0800 64 7667.

DAIRY WITH EFFLUENT FOCUS

Uncommon sense

David Law, Managing Director of Forward Farming Consultancy

Is this a confession? At last there is a change on the horizon. One of our major fertiliser companies has stepped up to the plate to offer a helping hand to save our rivers and streams from future pollution. Of course this would be like putting the handbrake on a fully laden logging truck on a downward slope. With the unquestionable evidence that these NPK fertiliser companies are largely to blame for this mess, they are running out of road. To keep their foot on the accelerator is not a viable alternative. I applaud the CEO for joining the team. Although there is an utterance from this committed team to stop the pollution, the answers of how to do it will need to be found. The current science is failing the environmental futures test and the two large NPK fertiliser companies who are applying this outdated science are failing the majority of the farmers of New Zealand. Although farmers are the focus of the attacks from environmentalists on water pollution, the fault lies with the two large NPK fertiliser companies who provide a specialist service and sell the fertiliser to 95% of our farmers who are following their advice. Because soil fertility is so specialised these companies have been getting away with focussing on sales rather than honest advice and honest science. Evidence of this is the propaganda which has led to the acceptance that superphosphate and urea grow grass. This is so entrenched in farmers’ minds

that a lot of fertiliser applied is carried on the back of superphosphate. If you need K and S a likely brew could be potassic sulphur super. If you needed Mg a likely product would be surpentine super or if your budget is tight Super 10 would do the job. A modern change lately is the use of DAP which is a brilliant product to deliver soluble phosphate which is particularly efficient for cropping. Research has proven that it will not lift phosphate reserves in the soil unless applied in heavy applications. Where soil phosphate levels are already adequate, (30+ Olsen P), to use super phosphate as a carrier is wasting farmers’ money and only helping fertiliser companies increase their sales and profits, and the excess is polluting our rivers and streams. A soil nutrient which is being used up with every tanker load of milk leaving the farm is calcium. Research has shown that an average dairy farm would need 300kg of lime per hectare per year to keep up with what is leaving the farm as milk. Lime would therefore be a much more cost effective carrier for elements which are

Most farmers use Chlorine to clean their sheds. Problem is, Chlorine also kills the good bacteria in your pond that eat the crust and sludge. Now there’s a new Chlorine-free sanitiser that kills pathogens better than Chlorine and leaves the good guys alone! It’s called DX50.

essential like potassium, magnesium, sulphur and trace elements. Another fallacy is the acceptance that pH should be 5.8 to 6.0. A scientific table showing the availability of nutrients at differing pH levels illustrate that phosphate is twice as available at pH 6.3 compared to the availability of phosphate at 5.8pH. This is real scientific evidence that farmers have been taken for a ride. So to increase your current phosphate levels just move your pH from 5.8 to 6.3. Your soil phosphates will actually increase without applying any phosphate. There are two points to this picture I have painted. 1. Superphosphate, DAP and urea are all water soluble. If these products are applied in excess where do you think they will end up? 2. To stop the cause of the pollution, not only will these water soluble products need to be stopped but the NPK trained specialists will need reprogramming. To change the direction of such an entrenched system won’t be easy for these chemical NPK companies or the farmers who follow them. For real science with integrity which will save money and grow more grass, ring me. David Law, Forward Farming, 027 490 9896.

MANAWATU FARMING LIFESTYLES

RURAL WHEELS ADVERTORIAL

Big Als for servicing Alistar Hunt has owned Big Als Farm Bikes and Motorcycles at 25A Bisley St, Palmerston North for the past 17 years and the business has two A-Grade mechanics on site. “We are off Bennett St, around the back of City Honda,“ says Alistar. “We enjoy the contact with our customers and dealing with the different bikes that come in. “We service on site and have a pickup and delivery service available, and we are the only motorbike wrecker that I know of in Manawatu. We supply

motorbike and quad parts and new aftermarket parts — if we don’t have it, we will get it. “Our well experienced mechanics believe in quality customer service and we service ‘most’ road, quad, farm bikes and scooters, and we buy old bikes at a reasonable price.” Big Als sell farm bikes and at times, two wheelers and quads.

“I suggest you book in advance for a service to ensure we have the parts needed. If you have a quad or farm bike, service it every six months as you don’t always see issues they are having, particularly with the amount of mud all over them, especially from the wet winter. “Being on farms, the brake shoes and drums can get covered in dirt and this can cause damage. Wear and tear is not always visible and leaving things to the last minute can create more cost and issues than you realise. “Caring for your bike is important — keep them washed and serviced. If they don’t get cleaned regularly this is detrimental to the lifetime of the machine. When you have cleaned your bike, check it over and make sure there are no cracks or breaks visible. Our mechanics are very fussy and we will

let you know of any extra issues we may find and give you the option of getting things fixed at the time of servicing or at your discretion. “We can provide brake shoes, clutch and handbrake cables and other accessories. “Our service includes an engine oil and filter change, diff oil change, clean air filter, new spark plugs, and a brake and general check over for around $280 plus labour. Our hourly rate is approximately $78 plus gst. “Here at Big Als we are always looking for Honda parts in particular so don’t leave your old bike to waste in a paddock. Call us and we can help remove it for you.” Open from 8am-5pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 9am-1pm. Phone 06 355 4852 or 027 297 8034. See our ad on page 2.

Irrigation Matters with Clem Powell The mystery of gravity driven pumps Everyone wants something for nothing and pumps working from their own water supply are often a great way of getting water delivered to higher levels. The concept has been around since invention in late 1700s. Often referred to as ram pumps from their predecessors, Glockemann 320 Pumps are in fact gravity driven pumps. Without getting too technical, water rams are powered by the water hammer effect of the ports opening and closing whereas Glockemann 320 are operated by high volume/ low pressure water on a large diaphragm working a smaller piston and cylinder to give the lift pressure required. At end of stroke a valve opens and components return ready for next cycle. Water for the pressure side can come from either submersion of the inlet port, suction hose off the inlet port or dry mounting the pump where the water is tapped from the drive tube. This is common in Australia and other places where remoteness of installation and flash flooding are a risk. Another difference between ram pumps and gravity driven pumps is that ram pumps need more velocity/ high drop as this is best for producing the water hammer to power them. Gravity driven need much less velocity and drop, usually between 0.6m and 1.8m, giving lift to 150m–200m vertical, although the spec charts do show delivery to 20m from 0.3m drop. This large power to lift ratio is not usually available from a ram pump. Glockemann 320 pumps are a robust cast iron construction and have proven to give years of reliable service before overhaul, which is an inexpensive and simple task if you are a do-ityourself person.
