Co-organiser Craig Wiggins believes providing communities with affordable entertainment options is important for the health and wellbeing of all people as they get a break from their daily routines. “It was a delight to see the children having fun with their friends and families. The adults also had the opportunity to catch up with people they knew and make new connections,” said Craig. “There were losing tote and spot prizes as well. Selwyn District Council has moved to support parents …

The first stage of Rolleston’s new retail centre is fully leased and will open later this month. Jeff Vesey of Retail Commercial Limited, who is marketing the centre on Tennyson Street said the boutique and restaurant precinct’s stage one had been “snapped up” and stage two was now being leased with strong tenant interest.

He said that the centre would open with Black & White Coffee, Red Bowl Restaurant, Little India Restaurant, Liquorland, New Order Fashion and a convenience store. The centre will also have 39 car parks. Vesey said that Rolleston had

grown fast during the last 10 years and all indications are that it will continue to grow, but retail offerings have lagged behind.

Friday, July 26 will see the talent behind Scared Scriptless take over Rolleston College for one night of improvised comedy action. Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, has called the Court Jesters (the talented folks behind Scared Scriptless: We’re Not Joking About Europe) ‘one of the best improv troupes I’ve ever come across’. Their regular Scared Scriptless Friday and Saturday shows have become a firm favourite with audiences and the longest running improv comedy show series in New Zealand. For the Rolleston

College engagement, three actors and one musician will craft an on-point, personalised show. In addition to the main event, there will be fun auctions, raffles and refreshments. Doors open at 6pm, with the school’s auditorium transformed with both bleacher and table seating. Tickets are on sale now online. Educators hope that this innovative approach to fundraising will help provide ‘the trip of a lifetime’ for students headed to Europe to experience the food, language and culture of the continent this November and December. ¢

Selwyn’s economy has continued its strong growth backed by a “whopping” increase in tourist and local spending according to the latest economic data. The latest quarterly economic monitor from analysts Infometrics shows the Selwyn economy continued to grow well ahead of national and regional averages. The report shows gross domestic product (GDP) growth in Selwyn increasing at 4.9% in the year to March 2018 compared to 2.5% growth nationally and 1.6% growth across Canterbury. Selwyn had the largest increase in spending by tourists nationally, up 13.2% for the year, with tourists spending $117 million in the district. It also highlighted a 13.6% increase in electronic card transactions to $89.2 million. Council community services and facilities group manager Denise Kidd said the figures reflect the positive growth council has seen. “They’re confirming to us what we know, that Selwyn is a great place to visit, to live and to do business.” In more good news for the district, the growth in p Mayor Sam Broughton commercial building consents continued strongly with the council continuing development and maturing of issuing 39 new commercial building the district’s economy. “The report shows how we’re taking consents in the first three months this year with more growth expected. “Markham Trust the developers of the Tennyson Street shops saw a very good opportunity to be part of Rolleston’s growth and fulfil a need for good quality well designed retail offerings to complement the existing Rolleston shops and be part of the developing town centre,” Vesey said. “The new centre situated across from the soon to be library/community centre and facing north-west Tennyson Street shops are well positioned to take

advantage of Rolleston’s growth,” he said. No announcement has yet been made about the exact date the centre will open. The centre is integrated into the Selwyn District Council’s planned $40 million upgrade of the Rolleston town centre. As well as $22 million for the new library, $8 million has been ring-fenced for roading improvements, including a new promenade in the pedestrian-friendly precinct, and $8 million for a new town square. 

Celebrating the hunt No room for complacency in health u by Ann van Engelen

u by Amy Adams, MP for Selwyn

I was pleased, if somewhat surprised, to read in the July 3 edition of The Record that Selwyn had ranked first in health wellbeing out of all of the 66 regions surveyed in the latest Infometrics Regional Wellbeing Survey. It was heartening to see that our life expectancy was apparently the highest in New Zealand. However, I did wonder if the fact that Selwyn reportedly had the secondlowest presentation rate for mental health issues was necessarily a good thing. The reason for my hesitation is that I am unsure whether this means that as a district we have less mental health issues than average or whether it could be an indication that people are not accessing help despite needing it. In my role as the local MP for Selwyn, I have met with a number of families who have lost a member due to suicide, and I am aware there are many others in the district who have had to endure such a tragedy. While we are fortunate to have access to tertiary level hospital facilities here in Canterbury, for some residents in our rural communities,

it is quite an undertaking to get to a doctor for a regular check-up. Moreover, because of this, there can be a tendency for people living in more isolated communities to ignore potential health warning signs because of their busy lifestyles and the lack of convenience. For this reason, National wants to pilot mobile rural health clinics serviced by health practitioners, which will travel to remote rural communities on a regular basis, where they can provide general health check-ups and mental health support for locals. This proposal to ensure people in rural communities have easy access to quality healthcare was included in our recently released primary sector discussion document and is available online at national.org.nz/primary_ sector if you would like to read about it further.

A day off-farm

Recycling helps farmers

u by Ann van Engelen

Each week, thousands of kiwi homes wheel or carry their rubbish to the kerbside for collection. For rural communities, managing refuse is not such an easy task. Generations of Kiwi farmers have had to find their own ways of clearing nonnatural waste.

All types of rural families took the opportunity to have time off the farm together last Sunday and spent the day at the Ashburton Trotting Club for the Farming Families Day at the Races.

“It was a very successful event and gave our guests something inexpensive to do with their families before the busy calving season,” says co-organiser Craig Wiggins. “More than 500 people attended, and our sponsors were fantastic. The race club had to find their car park full sign, which they haven’t used for a couple of years. People caught up with neighbours and friends and met new people. The activities included a vintage car display, skydivers and sulky races for the family. We wanted to lift people’s spirits with a little bit of light entertainment with no pressure. It was a beautiful day, and the face painter was bombarded by children. There were a lot of health checks done with quite a few farmers being recommended to visit their doctor for a more thorough check. “There were many spot prizes, and the Rural Co-op Fashion of the Field went down really well. People got into the swing of things with local MPs judging competitions, and Mayor Flavell was there along with many happy sponsors. “These type of days are important for everybody, not just farmers. It is good to run community orientated things to build people’s spirits up and keep the money raised within the community so they can grow. The more people you can get interacting off-farm, or anywhere, rubbing shoulders with mates and enjoying a day out with no stress and

not a lot of cost, is an important aspect of health and well being and we need to do it more. “The children had bouncy castles and free ice cream and milky drinks and a variety of food. People enjoyed the Ashburton Classic Car Club display, and most guests went home with a prize of some type. “Rural Support Trust was chatting with people about life on the farm and were extremely helpful, along with our sponsors. It was a great day for people to just enjoy it — the community spirit with their family and friends. We are looking forward to next year and growing the event to help our rural community have a day of relaxation.” ¢

A 2013 study by Environment Canterbury claimed that farms were producing nearly 10 tonnes of waste a year. Empty containers and drums, silage wrap, fertiliser bags and motor oil are just some of the items left over from the business of farming. Finding an efficient and sustainable solution can be confusing and time-consuming for farmers and growers, especially with each waste stream having its own processes for recycling or safe disposal. To add to the challenge, the options aren’t always obvious, conveniently located or available to use at all times — and can be costly. Rural recycling programme, Agrecovery, is stepping in to help solve these challenges. The programme,

which recycles agrichemical containers and drums and sustainably disposes of unwanted agrichemicals, has been trialling a project that allows farmers and growers to drop off a variety of waste at one location. Last year Agrecovery initiated two highly successful pilot projects in Matamata and Geraldine, collecting more than 19 tonnes of waste in just two days. The Ministry for the Environment is boosting the project by funding more nationwide events to be held in late August and September so that farmers and growers can clear a variety of waste all at the same time. These will be in Westport, Southland, Rolleston, Gisborne as well as Matamata and Geraldine. ¢

u by Ann van Engelen

It’s that time of year again when all dog owners must ensure that their dogs are registered.

The Christchurch SPCA is in desperate need of toys to help keep dogs entertained while in care at the centre.

Dog registrations are due from July 1 each year, with discounted registration fees available for July. Payment can be made online, by internet banking or at a council service centre. All dogs older than three months must be registered every year. The fine for an unregistered dog is $300. Fees collected from registration help to fund the council’s 24/7 dog control operation. It includes community education and the Dog Smart programme in schools, along with enforcement activities, operating

“Toys are important for the animals because it helps them be healthy and happy. Dogs need to have the ability to play, especially if they are in a shelter and don’t have a home of their own,” says SPCA communications manager Jessie Gilchrist. “What is especially useful is toys that they have to get food out of such as puzzle feeders and kongs. They are very stimulating and make the dog have to work for food. With puzzle feeders the dog gets its food once it solves the puzzle. They also help pass the time of day for them as well. “This week we have had eight puppies arrive from Nelson, and we already have many others in our care. We also appreciate the donation of blankets, sheets and towels to help keep our animals warm and clean.” The SPCA also need foster parents for kittens and adult dogs. “Foster parents are an important part of our community as they help animals adapt to being in a home or recover from injury or illness. Council supports parents

Selwyn District Council has moved to support parents who wish to represent the region by covering extra childcare costs for councillors and community board members.

u by Ann van Engelen

The council voted unanimously to reimburse councillors when they have to pay for childcare in order to attend meetings for council work or events where they are representing the council. “Having a family shouldn’t be a barrier to representing your community and the policy is an opportunity to open up council to new members,” says Mayor Sam Broughton. “We live in a district where half the population is under 40, and we’ve got a large number of young families. It’s important that young families are represented around the council table when we’re making decisions, and this is a great way of making that a little bit easier.” The policy follows the guidelines for councils to consider paying back childcare that is set out in the new Local Government Members (2019/2020) Determination 2019 law, which came into effect on July 1. The decision, which came into immediate effect, means a councillor or community board member can claim back up to $6,000 a year plus GST to cover the cost of childcare by someone who isn’t family to look after a child under 14 years old, in order for them to attend meetings or events on behalf of the council. The policy will be reviewed annually and is expected to cost council

$20–25,000 a year. Selwyn District Council chief executive David Ward says the move reflects the busy nature of serving your community. “Being an elected member means you’re on call at any time for meetings and events. The policy reflects that elected members can be called out at all hours for their work. We want good people to be able to serve their community, and it is an opportunity to help more people to be able to do that.” ¢

“It is known as the ‘pinkest walk of the year’ and helps raise funds for critical breast cancer research, support and education,” says Breast Cancer Foundation research and communications manager Adele Gautier. “We are getting the word out now so people can prepare their costume and fundraising ideas. “In New Zealand, nine women a day, more than 3,300 a year, are diagnosed with breast cancer, and approximately 25 men are diagnosed each year. “With your help, we can continue saving lives through early detection, expanding horizons in breast cancer research and supporting patients in their time of need. The walks are fun with a lot of unique outfits, and

people bring their children and dogs along, and we have entertainment as well.” The Queenstown Pink Star walk is on Sunday, October 13 at the Botanic Gardens. The Christchurch event will take place on Saturday, October 19 at North Hagley Park. Golden Years

Green wheels for older riders u by Andy Bryenton

We’ve all heard of the ‘born again biker’, the older gentleman who wants to relive the glory days of his youth by purchasing a powerful motorcycle and hitting the highway for adventure. There’s a new trend for older citizens getting out and about on two wheels, and internal combustion is not a factor. The growing popularity of e-bikes, (bicycles with electric motors to assist with power on the hills and long journeys) has found a niche with people who are active and above 65. Without the need to commute to work, many journeys for retired folks are to visit

friends or head to clubs and events. At the same time, doctors enthuse about gentle cardio exercise and advocate the low impact possibilities of getting on a bike. Combine this with the relative inexpensiveness of modern e-bikes, and you have the beginnings of a phenomenon. It’s one that is already very popular overseas. It can seem a bit daunting. Many people have not gotten on a ‘pushbike’ since they got their first car. However, the old saying is true. It does all come back, and those doctors are correct. The kind of gentle exercise offered by cycling at sedate (not Tour De France) pace can be very beneficial. There’s the bonus that this

form of transport uses no petrol, and can be very social. Here in New Zealand, the e-bike revolution seems perfectly tailored for the relatively flat land of the Canterbury region. Consider Auckland’s snarl of traffic-filled streets or Wellington’s chopped up hilly terrain, and you’ll see why e-bikes are eminently more suited for the south. Older citizens choosing an electric bike face a massive array of choices, however. The key things to look for are comfort, battery life, ease

of charging and use, and durability. Also, consider a step-through frame to make mounting and dismounting easier. As in any bike, good welds and solid construction count for a lot! These days you’ll also find bikes with wider, more stable wheels, shock absorbers and disc brakes to make things safer. Test ride a few and talk to your local bike dealer. With so many older people getting back on two wheels, they will have recommendations as to some affordable favourites. ¢

Dog club hosts successful champs u by Mike Isle

The Selwyn Dog Training Club has hosted another successful championship show at its home ground Foster Park Dog Park.

Mon–Sat 8.30am–11.00am & 4.00pm–5.30pm Sun 4.00–6.00pm www.katznk9z.co.nz

The event held last weekend saw 60 dogs and their handlers competing in a range of activities designed to test their obedience and discipline. Club secretary Lesley Taylor said entrants came from throughout New Zealand for the annual event and for many it was the culmination of years of training to get them ring-ready. However, it is all worth it, she said. “It gives you such a buzz when you are going through the different

exercises, and you have a dog heeling happily alongside you. Some goals are achieved and, of course, there are also disappointments, but at the end of the day, you always take home the best dog. “Last weekend we were very fortunate to have local supplier Ultra Dog Food as our sponsor, and we can’t thank them enough for coming on board. It was very much a community event.” Mrs Taylor said the club welcomed new members.

Safety and utility combined Changes in the middle of a successful vehicle’s model year normally amount to a selection of small cosmetic tweaks, upgrading small areas of chrome or plastic to keep up with the ever-changing dictates of aesthetics. However, Ford has thrown us a nice surprise for their ‘0.75’ update of the 2019 Ranger, rolling out a formidable suite of safety and autonomy controls for all models. The Ranger continues to reign as the nation’s favoured ute, with a strong showing at the National Fieldays and buoyant sales, especially in its Wildtrak specification. This level of spec already contains an arsenal of electronic safety features and some wizardry for helping to park and navigate the ute, but now similar suites are coming for the XLT and XT variants lower down the model diagram. From July on, every single Ford Ranger produced will contain autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a lane keeping aid, which can alert drivers who are drowsy or preoccupied, advanced traffic sign recognition to read speed signs even if you miss them, automatic high beam lights and cruise control with an adjustable speed limiter. There’s the universal application of reversing cameras and rear parking sensors to fit in those tight spots. Hills will be tackled easily with hill launch assist going up and a sure-footed hill descent control coming down. Add this to a very comprehensive dynamic stability control which ties in

antilock brakes, load adaptive control, roll-over mitigation, traction control and a trailer sway control function, and the Ranger range, from top to bottom, represents perhaps the most safetyequipped light commercial you can

buy in New Zealand. Competitors who have used the Ranger and its sales success as the benchmark for their own ute development now have a new target to aim for, and it’s sky high. For those who buy with reason, this

upgrade makes sound sense. Moreover, for those who buy with emotion, a new bi-turbo Ranger with a ten-speed automatic transmission is also waiting for a test drive, delivering smooth power and torque. ¢

Adding sizzle to the sting u by Andy Bryenton

Kia Motors has lived up to their famous adage ‘the power to surprise’ in recent months, with the biggest surprise in the bag being the sheer speed and power of their Stinger GT turbocharged six. Now the fast four-door has been honoured with a prestigious North American engineering award, right in the back yard of Detroit’s motoring colossi. The JD Power Engineering Award for Highest-Rated All-New Vehicle is presented to a machine that stands above the direct competition in terms of technology. Presented in Detroit, the ‘motor city’, it’s a clear indication that a car has been very meticulously designed and built. The JD Power company are most famous in the auto world for their regular surveys, which reveal consumer satisfaction with the reliability of a wide range of vehicles. “These awards are based on feedback directly from customers who bought the vehicles,” says Doug Betts, senior vice president of Global Automotive at JD Power. “That’s something that should bring great pride to our award recipients. It’s about understanding what customers are saying and why they’re saying it, then trying to engineer a product that will really answer their needs.” Despite the award, Kia has not rested on their laurels. A limited edition production run of neon orange Stinger GT Sport vehicles. With retina-searing paintwork and the ability to crush the 0–100kp/h time in under five seconds, there will be no

mistaking the hot new Kia when it hits the tarmac. Handling has been taken care of by Kia’s ex BMW M division engineering mastermind Albert Biermann, while the styling comes via the pen of Kia director Peter Schreyer himself. Only 10 will initially reach New Zealand shores, but
