ALTHOUGH she can’t make it to our interview, it’s clear that Tara Taylor knows her market for the business she began with her sister-in-law, Elisa Hoole. Babybellies is a range of bodycare products, loose herbal teas and soy candles for expecting and new moms. And while Hoole has dropped into North Shore News offices to tell me about the line, Taylor is busy elsewhere: she’s gone into labour with her first baby. Hoole — who is kid-free — says the duo came up with the concept for Babybellies long before Taylor became pregnant. “We both had, and still have, so many pregnant friends, and we realized when we were buying gifts that there are so many products with toxic and unnatural ingredients out there.� The North Shore resident says avoiding creams, lotions and cosmetics containing unnatural ingredients — like parabens, phenol and synthetic colour and fragrances — had been on her own radar for some time. It seemed obvious to her and Taylor that anything geared toward pregnant women, new moms and babies should be clear of potentially harmful ingredients, yet when they looked closely at labels they had trouble finding products that met their expectations. So “over a glass of wine in the garden� the pair came up with the idea for Babybellies, a unique range of natural products and gifts designed for the fabulous, health conscious, eco-savvy new or expecting mom. They started with what has become their signature product, the Belly Envy belly cream. Lightly scented with a blend of all-natural citrus oils — grapefruit, mandarin, tangerine and Neroli — the rich cream contains vitamins A and E and calendula, which help ease the itch of stretching skin. Though she isn’t pregnant, Hoole says she uses the Belly Envy cream as a body moisturizer every day. The Belly Envy line also includes belly oil that features neroli and sweet almond oils to aid in the prevention of stretch marks and scarring; and Belly Envy Belly Scrub, for gently increasing circulation, which contains dead sea salts, kelp, carrot and sweet almond oils. The duo enlisted a “Mother Board,� a group of moms to tell them what they liked, disliked and wished for when
it came to their products. With their help, Taylor and Hoole introduced another line for moms-to-be in the third trimester, and for new moms. The lavender in the Serenity Hand and Foot Cream and the Serenity Foot Soak isn’t recommended for women in the earlier stages of pregnancy. Although the scent is calming, it’s considered a uterine stimulant. “We found a lot of belly creams contain lavender, and it really should be avoided,� says Hoole. Instead, they put it into the foot products with ingredients that soften and help relieve swelling. With mom taken care of, the Babybellies partners turned their attention to their first (and only) product for the little ones themselves: a Natural Baby Oil. “It’s nut-free and it has no fragrance whatsoever.� As well as preventing irritation and allergic reactions, Hoole says the lack of scent allows for better bonding between mom and baby. “When they’re first born it’s important that they become familiar with your scent.� The Udder Relief Nipple Balm is vegan, so it contains no lanolin, and is safe for ingestion so it doesn’t have to be wiped off before nursing. Customers have said it’s also wonderful as a lip balm, a cuticle cream and is effective for relieving eczema too. Other products in their range include some delicious loose herbal teas that are filled with chunks of fruit and flower petals; and scented soy candles that burn for 95 hours.
