Mayor’s Welcome 25 years has gone by quickly, and in that time we’ve seen a significant transformation of the Harmony Arts Festival along the West Vancouver waterfront! Come and join us in celebrating this 25th anniversary of the Harmony Arts Festival.
MAJOR SPONSORS:
For over two decades, our community has hosted this spectacular summer event that features visual arts exhibitions, musical performances, outdoor movies, kids’ activities, culinary arts experiences and much more. As you know, we have always encouraged visitors to take a walk, take public transit or take a bike to the event, but this year we also invite visitors to come by boat!
MEDIA SPONSORS:
A special addition to the Harmony Arts Festival this year is the new Pop-up Marina and Club 25 chauffeured boat concierge. Reserve a spot at one of the dozen moorage buoys situated just offshore of Millennium Park, and we’ll chauffeur you to Ambleside Pier by boat—the perfect way to arrive at the festivities.

› ABOUT THE COVER ARTIST
› BEST OF THE WEST SPONSORED BY GROSVENOR AMERICAS
Xwalacktun (aka Rick Harry) was born and raised in Squamish. His father’s ancestry is Coast Salish and his mother’s is Kwa ‘ kwa k’wakw/Squamish. Xwalacktun was given his indigenous name by his father, Pekultn, a hereditary chief originally from the Seymour Creek area. Although he gained the majority of his technical skills and education from Emily Carr and Capilano colleges, he attributes much of his learning to trial and error.
Join us for the 5th annual BEST of the WEST, an evening on Ambleside Pier featuring 12 of the Lower Mainland’s best restaurants paired with 12 BC wineries for a culinary arts event and competition. Guests vote on their favourite pairing, with the winning team crowned BEST of the WEST.
Ambleside Pier, 1414 Argyle Avenue Wednesday, August 5 • 7–9 p.m.
Xwalacktun has received numerous awards such as the Order of B.C., FANS Distinguished Artist Award, Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal and Confederation Medal. His house posts were acknowledged with a Golden Georgie Award and his creative bridge design in Squamish received the Arthur G. Hayden Medal at the 31st Annual International Bridge Conference. His internationally recognized art work includes the design of the 2010 Olympic Bid book and works for the 2010 Olympics as well as totem poles throughout Scotland. He is widely recognized for his public work such as Ambleside’s Spirit of the Mountain, a monumental steel and brick sculpture, and the carved cedar door panels at the Gordon Smith Art Gallery in North Vancouver. Future endeavours include a commission for the new Audain Art Museum in Whistler and carving a five tonne stone for the North Vancouver Spirit Trail. Visit xwalacktun.ca.

YOU AND I Expanding on new visual art experiences at the festival is Marie Khouri’s sculpture, You and I. Khouri’s works often start in the palm of her hand, where she models clay and other materials into shapes that evoke a body’s curves and other organic forms. Khouri, who was born in Egypt and raised in Lebanon until civil war forced her to relocate to Europe, draws on her cultural background and classical training to create complex works imbued with meaning. You and I spells it namesake in Arabic script. Viewers are invited to interact with the sinuous sculptures which act as seating and provoke us to consider how art and ideas can link people and cultures. The sculpture creates a space for public engagement–a place for sitting, conversation or simply enjoyment. Marie Khouri lives and works in Vancouver. Organized by the West Vancouver Museum and Pantea Haghighi, You and I is courtesy of the artist and the Equinox Gallery, Vancouver.
INTENSE THE HEAT
Park Royal Beachside Patio, 15th Street and Argyle Avenue
BY MATTHEW SOULES ARCHITECTURE Intense the Heat, designed by Matthew Soules Architecture, is a temporary installation located on Ambleside Pier. A series of intertwining fabric shapes are inflated and illuminated as a form of spatialized architectural ornament to be experienced while strolling the pier or gazing from the shore. The fabric shapes and their internal air velocity manifest the form and character of dynamic energetic systems. The total volume of this three-dimensional ornament references the amount of oil that contaminated Burrard Inlet during the last major spill in 1973.

› BIRD CANOPY Bird Canopy is a hanging art installation created by the collaborative efforts of community members of all ages, guided by West Vancouver artist Cori Creed. Using paint and mixed-media, artists create works which are then transferred onto recycled coroplast, and cut into crow silhouettes. The string of crows is suspended above the crowds that fill John Lawson Park, and will be illuminated with strings of lights.
