Living on the North Shore is like having the perfect first date over and over again. Just when you think you are really getting to know it you discover another amazing aspect that makes you want to find out even more.
PHOTO: CINDY GOODMAN
There is no limit to the recreation options here. If you want to go for a walk you can enjoy a casual stroll along the waterfront while sipping on your fresh latte, or you can venture up nature’s Stairmaster and climb the Grouse Grind. In between those two extremes are a wealth of other choices. In many of these same locations you can bike or run.
“Living on the North Shore is like having the perfect first date over and over again.”
If you’ve worked up a sweat you can cool off with a swim in one of the local swimming pools, plunge in the ocean at a gorgeous beach, or find an even more invigorating swim in one of our mountainfed rivers. In the winter we have three ski resorts to choose from, all offering various snow activities from downhill skiing to snowshoeing.
But the North Shore is much more than just a recreation haven. Fantastic restaurants of many types of cuisine are here to tantalize your palate. Shopping choices are everywhere with several large retail centres plus an abundance of unique boutique stores. And when it’s finally time to go home there are choices galore for where you might choose to live. From apartment living complete with incredible views to modern townhomes and detached houses of every size. No matter what type of accommodation you choose when you get home you’ll know that if you’re on the North Shore then you made the right choice.

POCKETKNIFE Although a multitool is preferred, a good pocketknife with a quality blade will suffice. It may also be worth carrying a small pruning saw for cutting branches when building a shelter or fire. SHELTER Large orange plastic bag and thermal tarp.
LOCALS’ GUIDE TO NORTH SHORE RIDES APP This guide presents two locals’ perspectives on the North Shore trail network, and makes an effort to describe a wide range of trails that can accommodate all skill levels. App features include: Rider’s location on maps, trail descriptions, ratings, and lengths, recommended ride descriptions, profiles, route overlays, and an overview map of the North Shore, which includes hiking trails.
WATER Drink one-two litres before your hike and carry one-two litres with you.
HIT THE TRAILS SAFELY
RED CROSS FIRST-AID APP The official Canadian Red Cross First Aid app puts lifesaving advice in your hands. The app features videos, interactive quizzes and simple step-by-step advice to help you maintain life-saving skills and respond when needed for everyday emergencies. SAFE BOATING BY THE ROYAL CANADIAN MARINE SEARCH AND RESCUE APP This app features links to useful voyage planning resources such as tidal, wind, weather and fishing information. Transport Canada required safety equipment and navigation light requirements are also included. Run through the useful checklists with your crew as well as review suggestions for recommended equipment.
When visiting local trails, even the best weather can change rapidly. Always tell a reliable person where you are going and when to expect you back. North Shore Rescue also recommends taking the following 10 essentials:
SIGNALLING DEVICE Whistle (NSR recommends the Fox 40 whistle with a lanyard), bear bangers, pencil flare.
LIGHT Flashlight or a headlamp with extra batteries (and light bulb if not LED). Green cyalume stick or small turtle lights as emergency backup.
EXTRA CLOTHES Hat or toque, gloves or mittens, fleece jacket, Gortex jacket, polypro underwear, good quality hiking socks and Gortex over-pants.
FIRESTARTER Matches (waterproof or in a plastic bag) or lighter. NSR also recommends a commercial firestarter and/or a candle.
FIRST-AID KIT Should include pocket mask; Sam Splint, bulk dressings, protective gloves, bandage, scissors and blister dressings. NAVIGATION Good-quality compass with builtin declination adjustment and both topographical and interpretive maps. NSR also recommends a GPS unit but only as an adjunct to compass and map. COMMUNICATIONS – CELLPHONE NSR recommends you bring a cellphone with a fully charged battery. It is advisable to keep the phone turned off and stored in a sealable plastic bag to help keep the phone dry and fully charged. Many people manage to call 911 initially but their phone dies before their location can be relayed, which is not a desirable situation. If you have a smartphone, you should also know how to get GPS coordinates off of it to give to search and rescue if you become lost or injured. SOURCE: NORTHSHORERESCUE.COM

Spots of interest: Before the mid-1800s, Hastings Creek and its numerous tributaries made up the prime spawning area for most of Lynn Creek’s migratory runs of cutthroat, steelhead, coho and chinook salmon. In the early days, this creek contained excellent spawning and rearing habitat for salmon and trout and had strong coho runs. Today, you can walk this forest trail forgetting you’re only minutes from civilization, enjoying the rushing creek, boardwalks and wooded stairways. What is your favourite NS secret? It’s nice because it’s a different perspective of Vancouver. It feels like a little getaway — like an island oasis.
I love to bike and hike here on the North Shore. Typically I go up Cypress or out to Horseshoe Bay. The best time is really in the morning, it’s quiet and peaceful. I Love being in the Mount Seymour Backcountry as it is only a quick drive to the mountain but once you’re there, it feels a world away. Skiing has always been a huge part of my life as an anchor and outlet for an active lifestyle, my love of the outdoors and creative expression.
For me, it comes down to one thing — the sense of community. People here pitch in to make the North Shore a great place to both live and work. Whether it’s the area’s large companies, our small business owners, community service organizations or local residents, I see community spirit everywhere.
It’s an amazingly diverse population, tolerantly living together and united by a common love for the North Shore utopian lifestyle of skis, trees and seas.
I like the neighbourhood feel of the North Shore. When I’m cycling or running through the trails, I see my neighbours. It’s just a healthy community.

What is your favourite NS secret? I love living and working on North Shore because we are all tied together here by the energy of the Capilano River, and bookended so nicely by the unique character of an early morning Indian Arm sunrise and a glorious evening Howe Sound sunset. The North Shore Mountains monitor all these elements and provide us with the Baden Powell Trail and the Howe Sound Crest Trail.
