Leslie Black If you have a new baby or have active young children, you know how important it is for them- and you- to get a good sleep. Getting adequate rest allows young children to fully participate in regular daily activities and allows parents to function and statistically, shows that they will have a much healthier lifestyle. Unfortunately, however, it’s not always easy to get little ones to settle down at the end of a busy day. Now on the North Shore, Leslie Black of A Kiss Goodnight Sleep Consultation, has the background, expertise and the solution for all moms & dads. “One of the most common questions that I get from parents is how can they get their child to sleep? ” says Leslie. “Because my focus as a family counselor has been primarily on parenting, I completely understand how parents end up where they do; in sleep situations they are unhappy about. I am also very aware of the effects that the lack of a baby or child sleep can have on the relationship between the parents. A Registered Clinical Counsellor, Leslie has worked with families on the North Shore for many years. “I have a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology and I am also a Registered Clinical Counsellor through the BCACC. I have worked with parents and families for over 6 years in North and West Vancouver as a family

counsellor and a parent educator through Hollyburn Family Services.”

any intervention from their parents. A Kiss Goodnight is all it takes.”

Her experience as a sleep counsellor grew out of her own experience. “I became a sleep consultant after using Dana Obleman’s Sleep Sense book with my first son William. The results were amazing- I told everyone about it and how having a baby that slept all night really changed my life. When the opportunity to be personally trained by Dana Obleman arose, I jumped at the chance. I know how great the program is and wanted to be able to share it with others moms and dads.”

It’s a welcome resource for parents with busy youngsters. “I know how to support parents in this sensitive time. Everyone can teach their child to sleep through the night in a gentle and supportive way. You and your child will be much happier and healthier once you are all sleeping properly.”

Leslie understands that a child experiencing sleep difficulties affects the whole family.

Sleep Sense is a program created by Dana Obleman that focuses on teaching a baby or child to sleep independently without the use of “props”. Sleep “props” are anything that puts the child to sleep such as nursing/feeding, soothers, being rocked or patted, sleeping in parents bed etc. The program teaches the baby how to self-soothe so that they are able to sleep throughout the night and take proper naps without any intervention from the parents. A Kiss Goodnight is all it takes!

“The solution I can provide, is the ability to put your child to bed early, with no fighting, to spend the evening together again as a couple and give you the confidence going to bed knowing that everyone will get a full night’s sleep. Knowing that your child won’t fight you to go to bed- and will sleep all nightleads to stress-free evenings for everyone. You’ll even have the ability to get a babysitter for the night or weekend.”

If you’re looking for ways to help your whole family sleep, give Leslie a call to arrange a free 15 minute consultation at 604.984.0116 or find her online at akissgoodnight.ca

The Sleep Sense program teaches a child to sleep on their own without relying on external assistance. “The program teaches your infant or child how to self-soothe so that they are able to sleep throughout the night and take proper naps without

the place to camp

HE has seen them arrive at Camp Jubilee chin down, eyes low, and a bag slung over a shoulder as they take those first unfamiliar steps to their cabin. And he has seen them leave, sometimes tearful and sometimes proud, but always transformed by their time in the wilderness. “When we get kids up, they want to be challenged,” says David Duckworth, general manager of Camp Jubilee. Jubilee is a wilderness camp for kids between the ages of seven and 16, and after 12 years of watching kids paddle a canoe for the first time in their lives, Duckworth has seen what a few days with nature can do. Asked about some of his more memorable campers, Duckworth recalls a pair of young friends, “who took up a lot of my time with their behaviour,” he recalls, chuckling. On the last day, each of them were sad to leave. The duo came back the next year, eventually joining the camp’s staff as counsellors. That emphasis on trying to give back to younger campers

WHAT if you could build your own

construct simple machines, including drills. But the lessons come with an important message: “I tease them and say, ‘Well, all it’s good for is drilling through Jell-O,’” explains Brear. That’s because the drill is made of Lego pieces. A retired teacher, Brear uses educational Lego kits to teach kids how to build simple machines with gears, pulleys, wheels and axles; moving cars

with motors; construction cranes; elevators and even greenhouses. The special kits include software so the various finished builds can interface with computers and be controlled by students. It all started for Brear when he was a teacher with the Vancouver School Board. After accompanying a student to a special education technology event, he was introduced to a

Lego building kit that was using Hypercard to program the models to make them move. Brear says he was amazed that the Lego could interface with computers and move the model. After receiving a grant to purchase a couple of kits, Brear developed a summer school program that year. Unfortunately, the interface boxes he needed, which were coming from Boston, arrived in August, and his summer school was in July. Despite the rocky start, Brear went on to host a regular schedule of successful camps during the school year, as well as Spring Break and summer camps. “I was fascinated with it,” says Brear of the Lego-computer combination. He lists some of the unique models built over the years, which include robots; a dryer with a push-button start/ stop; a car that had headlights students could program; and a tractor that went back and forth, and right and left, using motors controlled by a computer. Brear explains that the projects are connected to the science curriculum, and he is

ROBOTS are just one of the unique models kids build at Lego camp. happy to discuss specifics with parents if they ask. He also notes the finished models are meant to relate to familiar items, “So there’s a correlation between what they build and real life,” says Brear. A particularly memorable project one group of students worked on involved an experiment. Students built two greenhouses, and added a bit of dirt and a seed in a dish to See Moveable page 12

each one. Each of the seeds was watered regularly, but one greenhouse had a roof controlled by a computer program to raise and lower depending on the room temperature. The seed that didn’t get regular oxygen died off, but the greenhouse with the moving roof grew a “lovely green plant.” “It’s lots of fun,” says Brear, who was first introduced to Lego when his own kids played with it. He later developed a keen interest in computers, so the combination of the two has been a good fit. This summer Brear will once again be leading summer Lego camps at West Vancouver Recreation Centre and through the West Vancouver school district. The week-long camps are for kids ages five-12. Sibling groups may be accommodated in one session. Camp-out is topped off with a banquet From page 3 brainchild of the women’s auxiliary of the labour movement, according to Duckworth, who says the camp was founded on giving kids who couldn’t afford to go to camp a chance to camp. “A lot of kids are sponsored, says Duckworth. Aside from a few fundraisers to support the camp, as well as some money from British Columbia’s gaming fund, the campers are largely subsidized by the camp itself. “Because we sponsor a lot of kids, some parents think it’s not for everyone, says Duckworth. The camp is intended for all children who could benefit from spending a few days in the camp’s 128 acres off of Indian Arm, according to Duckworth. Jubilee is offering seven camps in July and August, as well as a wilderness leadership camp and the Extreme Camp. “They have a more robust outtripping program, Duckworth says of the Extreme Camp, which is slated to be a 10-day adventure at the end of the summer. The camps range from four to 11 days, and the activities include

kayaking, canoeing, hiking and swimming. Adventurous campers can also get a chance to shoot an arrow, rappel down a rock face, or take the highropes course through the treetops that dot the camp. Jubilee also offers a family day and a three-day family camp. The camps are largely social, giving young people a chance to form lasting friendships, according to Duckworth. Part of each camp that is six days or longer includes an overnight canoeing or kayaking trip up Indian Arm. After a night spent learning how to survive in the wild, the campers trek back for a banquet dinner, a jamboree dance and carnival games. Jubilee also awards outstanding campers on the last day. The camp provides young people with an opportunity to hear what life sounds like without the hum of electronics. “I think we live in a pretty fast society, says Duckworth. “Camp’s a great opportunity to reconnect with nature and the outdoors. For more information or to register visit the website at www. campjubilee.ca.

Kay Meek Centre introduces Theatre K New camp will let kids apply what they learn Rosalind Duane rduane@nsnews.com

“THIS is our time to dance. It is our way of celebrating life.” So says Ren McCormack during a passionate speech in the popular 1980’s dance flick Footloose. McCormack is the hero of the film, fighting a strict law that bans teens from dancing in a small American town. Footloose is a great show for youth and a great show about youth, says Claude Giroux, managing artistic director at the Kay Meek Centre. He adds it’s about reaching for your potential and passions. That’s why this summer the centre’s new camp, Theatre K Summer Youth Conservatory (the “K” comes from Kay Meek), will culminate in a production of Footloose. “I think it’s fairly unique in terms of what we’ve done in the past,” says Giroux of the Theatre K program, which features two

weeks of intense boot-camp style classes of singing, dancing and/ or acting, followed by two weeks of rehearsing and mounting the show. Area professionals and teachers will be on hand to help campers apply the skills they learn in the first half of the camp to the production. “Kids will be surrounded by a whole bunch of people who are passionate about what they’re doing,” says Giroux, adding students will be experiencing musical theatre in a very hands-on and tactile way. It is suited to both beginners and those with theatre experience, he notes. Kids can attend two or four weeks of the program, and although the camp is non-auditioning, there will be auditions for the Footloose production. Auditions will also be held in June for those who are not attending the full four weeks of the program. In the last few years, Kay Meek has played host to a number of camps from other organizations, but this is the first year the centre has offered this type of camp, explains Giroux. Theatre K is also a co-production with the West Vancouver school district.

It’s not surprising since West Vancouver secondary is a close neighbour; the school shares a wall with the Kay Meek Centre. “In my mind it was a natural fit,” says Giroux of the relationship, noting the school often uses space at the centre for high school productions, recitals and assemblies. The camp will enroll up to 50 kids between the ages of 10 and 18. Registrataion is now open. For those who prefer to experience the backstage world of theatre rather than performing, there is also a Tech Wizard camp. Students involved in the Tech Wizard program will work on design, props, lighting, sound, stage management and video design. For both the performers and the tech wizards, Theatre K camp will focus on applying skills. “I really believe in more doing and less talking, and this is very much about doing,” says Giroux. ASHLEIGH Palcic (left) and Sarah Im examine the wooden polar bear puzzle they assembled during a day camp activity at West Vancouver Community Centre during March Break. West Vancouver is once again offering numerous summer camps for kids of various ages.

From July 3 to August 31, West Vancouver is offering more than 100 camps intended to instruct, inform, and inspire young people. Whether your child is comfortable in a kitchen or a kayak, shooting hoops, or shaping pottery, West Vancouver has a camp for just about everyone. West Vancouver offers morning camps, afternoon camps, all-day camps, and even a few sleepovers. Media fans may find something interesting to do at West Vancouver’s three Byte camps: Flash Video Game Design; 3D Animation; and Music and Video Production. For kids ages 11-14, the camps offer the chance to work on short animated films as well as a video game;

or learn the basic steps to animate in a 3D environment; or put their musical talents to the test to make a music video, depending on the camp they choose. For children longing to sway to the beat of their own drum, the Music, Movement and Design camp offers kids a chance to design costumes while learning the joys of African dance. Campers get one hour of drumming instruction

each day. Campers are reminded to prepare for time outdoors, and to bring a snack and a water bottle. West Vancouver also promises camp staff have received a high standard of training in games and in safety. Plenty of art and design camps are also on offer.
