Kids don’t stop believing at Glee camp Rosalind Duane rduane@nsnews.com

IT could be a young athlete overcoming adversity to win a kickboxing tournament, or a monkey chasing some kids with a stick of dynamite. The range of creative options is wide at Ultimate Glee Camp, a program in which kids choose a song, record it, and shoot a video for it. “It’s totally just for fun and the experience,” says Jim Kwan, owner of Creativ Music Centre in North Vancouver, which runs the camp. He notes there is no experience necessary, no auditioning, and you don’t even really have to be a good singer. A pianist, singer and composer, Kwan was trying to find something different to offer clients when he put together an “ultimate” glee camp for Spring Break last year. The program was a success, so he expanded it to include summer sessions. “It’s ultimate because they’re doing everything right from scratch; right from choosing

their songs, to working out their parts, to recording the parts in the studio, and then storyboarding their music video and shooting it,” explains Kwan. He says this camp is more similar to how the cast of the popular TV show Glee record their songs in a recording studio first then shoot the show. “As opposed to doing more of a musical theatre program where you learn some stuff and practise it and then you perform it, this is actually more emulating what they would see on the show,” says Kwan. For one week, kids ages nine-12 meet in groups of eight for two-hour sessions either in the morning or the afternoon, to work on their recording and video. Participants can register as singles, pairs or groups of up to eight friends. “It’s a little bit of a different angle than just getting together to sing or perform,” says Kwan. Weather permitting, the music video is shot outdoors and also in the centre’s multimedia room, which has a green screen (used to digitally produce different backgrounds). On the last day of camp, parents are invited to watch the finished

product, and Kwan says many are surprised by what they see. “Generally they don’t know what to expect,” he says. Videos that have been produced in previous camp sessions include Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing, which featured an inspirational tale of a young kickboxer fighting back from defeat to win a tournament. A video for the song Just the Way You Are, by Bruno Mars, was an homage to moms who continue to love their kids unconditionally despite the kids misbehaving, eating too much junk food and not doing their homework. And the lyrics for Taio Cruz’s song Dynamite were taken literally by one group, who produced a video featuring a monkey chasing the camp kids around with a stick of dynamite. “It’s been great,” says Kwan, noting the range of choices for songs and videos. Each participant receives an audio CD of their group’s recording, as well as a DVD of their video. Ultimate Glee Camp is $150 per child. Sessions start July 30 and will run every week throughout August. For more information visit the website at www.creativ.ca.

AT Creativ Music Centre’s Ultimate Glee Camp, students record music — just as Lila Edsall, 8, and Hannah Tomlin-Sopcak, 9, are doing — before they shoot the music video that goes with it. The camp takes place this summer, starting July 30 and running throughout August.

YOU’VE probably seen one at some point driving around town. They’re big, colourful cement mixer trucks, some with giant asparagus painted on them, some with a smiling sun. The familiar blue-andwhite trucks of Ocean Construction Supplies have been around town for some time. The company has five plants, but the most visible is probably the one nestled into an obvious nook on Granville Island. It’s hard to miss as you walk by on your way to buy bread (or cookies!), and pass the open gate with its interesting art installation out front, and its large trucks neatly parked in a row. The Granville Island website notes Ocean Construction is its largest and oldest tenant. The history of this plant will be on display with onsite vintage trucks and photos when Ocean Construction hosts its 14th annual open house on Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will feature tours, interactive displays, prizes and balloons for kids. Gatehouse Montessori

Gatehouse Montessori School • One of the best authentic Montessori Schools on the North Shore with over 30 years experience, • Program begins at 3 years of age

Endeavouring to develop a love of learning and a strong need to investigate

• Extended day program • Full-day Montessori Kindergarten • French, Mandarin and Music classes oơered • Afternoon preschool class available.

The Montessori approach is based on the natural laws of human development. Maria Montessori observed that children under the age of six absorb limitlessly and effortlessly from the world around them and, in doing so, lay down foundations for later life. She identified certain windows of opportunity – she called them ‘sensitive periods” – when the child is irresistibly drawn to the things he needs to help him develop. Everything in the classroom is designed to support these windows of opportunity. The materials are child-sized, and the equipment, which is aesthetically pleasing and meticulously cared for, is laid out in an orderly fashion on low shelves that are easily accessible. Children between the ages of three to six are grouped together. The younger children learn from watching the older children and the older ones benefi t by role modeling and helping the younger ones. The mixed ages allow the children to develop socially, intellectually and emotionally. This is an essential aspect of any Montessori school. The curriculum is designed to give the children the opportunity to practice everyday skills and to help them develop concentration and co-ordination of mind and body. The sensory materials make the most of the fact that children use their senses to learn. Through practice and perfection of these activities the children learn to discriminate, order and classify the physical properties of the world they live in. The child under six has a great capacity for mental absorption. The Montessori prepared environment allows the child to explore the didactic materials freely on their own initiative. This freedom has responsibilities attached to it, as grace and courtesy is an important skill in our environments.

The teachers respond to the needs of the individual child, giving lessons when appropriate. The child happily makes creative choices and repeats activities in order to reinforce their knowledge of the materials. This strengthens concentration and social skills so necessary in the classroom. Activities in the Practical Life area of the classroom set the child up for success when taking care of their classroom, themselves and socially. Grace and Courtesy is discussed and encouraged at all times. Small and gross motor movements are

strengthened through the use of activities in this area as well. The activities in the Sensorial area develop and enrich all five senses, which in turn heightens the child’s experiences while at school and at home. The materials for Math help the children develop an understanding of mathematical concepts in a concrete way. Activities designed to prepare the children for reading and writing are presented to the child from the start of their life in the classroom. Geography, history, biology, botany, zoology, art and music are covered through a hands-on approach based on the fact that children learn most eff ectively from their own experiences,

personal and purposeful. In a Montessori school, you will see children choosing activities independently and moving from one activity to the next, always returning their chosen activity to the shelf after use. There is an atmosphere of calm and responsibility as the child is observed concentrating for surprising periods of time. The children work individually, in a group or with a friend. Groups arise spontaneously rather than at a fixed time. Observation of the child by the teacher is ongoing in a Montessori environment. The child is guided by a trained Montessori teacher who presents an activity to the child when he/she shows they are ready, being careful never to give more help than is necessary. Often, another child will help, the very response that Dr. Montessori would want to observe. Children work at their own pace and naturally develop their own rhythm. The ‘directress’ is not teaching the child; she is putting him in charge of his own learning through his own exploration – another key part of the Montessori approach. In a true Montessori school, like Gatehouse, you will find a pleasant, calm and well organized environment where all of the materials and furniture are designed specifi cally to “fit” children 3-5 years of age. The classroom is usually divided into specific areas, where the child can work on the following skills: practical life, sensorial, mathematics, language and cultural subjects. The child knows where to fi nd the materials he/she needs as everything has a place, and there is a place for everything. In a Montessori classroom, you will see children who have learnt how to explore and solve problems themselves and who work cooperatively with one another.

Getting back to nature on Mount Seymour Manisha Krishnan mkrishnan@nsnews.com

GROWING up on the North Shore means kids have access to the wilderness and mountains, and we certainly see them take advantage of it on their skis and snowboards in winter.

PARTICIPANTS in Mount Seymour’s summer EcoAdventure Camps reconnect with nature, and learn to enjoy the wilderness with a focus on survival skills and safety.

But what about in the summer? Mount Seymour is again offering a series of EcoAdventure Camps this year that are designed to get kids away from their video games and computers and into nature. “There’s such a shortage of time spent in nature and we really think it’s important to get kids back into nature and really connecting with it as well,” says Janey Chang, outdoor education manager at Mount Seymour Resorts. The five-day camps include different themes such as nature awareness and hazards, mammals and tracking, mountain mystery and history, navigation and shelters, and Seymour Survivor Challenge Day. Kids will be able to make

There will also be a focus on safety and survival skills. “The backcountry and the wilderness, they’re here for people to enjoy. We don’t kids to be afraid but we want them to be prepared, it’s in their own back yard,” explains Chang. All of the children will be introduced to 10 essentials they should bring with them into the forest and how to spot hazards, while the older kids will learn about how to start a fire without matches, build shelters and find edible plants and trees. The RCMP Hug a Tree and Survive program will participate in a guest workshop as well. Last year was the first time Mount Seymour rolled out the full program and Chang says the feedback was positive from parents and kids alike. “A lot of what we heard from parents was when their kids got home they couldn’t stop talking about what they learned,” says Chang. “From the kids, they really loved the free play,” she adds.

“It wasn’t a playground. We were exploring, we were hiking, we were always discovering new things, and they loved making fire and the survival aspect of it.” Mount Seymour EcoAdventure Camps are available

for 5-12 year olds, with the first camp starting on July 9. The cost is $220 for a full week, or $50 for a drop-in. A shuttle service and lunch are available for an additional cost. For more information go to www.mountseymour.com.

SUMMER is perfect for learning a new skill like kayaking, as these children did in Deep Cove. The Vancouver Kids Day Camp offers many opportunities for taking part in new adventures. concludes with an overnight camping trip to Newcastle Island. “It doesn’t matter if you haven’t tried any of these activities before as long as you’re just willing to get out there and try and have fun,” says Kelly Rogerson of Summer Safaris Teen Travel, the company behind the

camp. She notes there are “no cars and no big animals” on Newcastle Island, so it’s a great place for kids who have never been to an overnight camp to try sleeping in the wilderness for one night. Rogerson says the emphasis of the camp is to have fun and enjoy new experiences with new friends.

With kids living such busy lives these days, she says it’s time they, “Take a break from that hectic life and just go have fun and be a kid.” Summer Safaris Teen Tours has been offering teen travel adventures for years, but this is the first summer the company See Carbon page 32

will be offering a kids camp. Rogerson has been working with kids and teens in Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom for 14 years, including at day camps, as a ski instructor and as an outdoor education instructor. Rogerson, who goes along on every trip, says the ratio of adults to kids on each outing is no more than 1:8. Each trip also includes a minimum of one certified lifeguard and one leader certified in adventure wilderness first aid. Inclusion is also an important part of the group’s philosophy, and Rogerson says she takes extra steps to ensure every participant feels welcome and included. Bullying is not tolerated. Another important element of the camp is respecting the environment, and Rogerson notes her company is carbon neutral, which means they purchase carbon credits to offset their carbon emissions. The camp also operates on a “leave-notrace” program, so participants are encouraged to recycle their waste on day trips, and compost their food during the overnight camping trip. “It’s important that we do respect the environment especially when we’re out there taking part in all these beautiful areas,” says Rogerson. Although the camp doesn’t include any formal teaching about environmental conservation, Rogerson says camp leaders take seriously their responsibility as role models to promote awareness. Above all, though, Rogerson says the goal of the camp is for kids to have fun in a safe and welcoming environment. “Meet some new friends and be part of a group where everyone is included,” she says. Vancouver Kids Day Camp takes place July 23-July 27. The cost is $650 for five days, and includes two lunches (a barbecue lunch on Monday and lunch on Friday), as well as a dinner and a breakfast during the overnight camping trip. Daily drop-ins are also available if space permits. For more information, visit the website at www.summersafaris. com.
