editor’s note

I’ve been a Molly Parker fan since seeing her in the 1996 indie film Kissed. The actress who graces our cover launched her career in small roles on Canadian television, but it was her theatrical debut in this low-budget picture where she played a young woman obsessed with death that brought her accolades and acclaim as well as a Genie award. Parker has a gift for playing strong, complex women (like widow Alma Garret on the cable-TV series Deadwood) that exude a quiet, inner elegance, and now she’s back on the small screen in NBC’s The Firm. For our cover story, Look regular contributor Michelle Hopkins caught up with the Hollywood transplant at her temporary home in Toronto, where she’s currently shooting the legal thriller. Turn to page 17 to share in their conversation. In this issue, we also explore the appeal of desert modern, a unique style of living that swept through Palm Springs mid-century and is attracting a new generation of sun seekers in love with modern architecture and style.

RECIPE

PAN ROASTED YELLOW EYE SNAPPER & WEST COAST SEAFOOD MEDLEY with pan seared potato gnocchi and shellfish vinaigrette

ancouver-born chef Dino Renaerts below has always had a close connection with the ocean. Preparing this featured dish from the menu of Pier 7 restaurant and bar, soon to open at North Vancouver’s Shipbuilders’ Square, brings back fond childhood memories of sunny days fishing off Bowen or the back side of Keats Island. Fresh-caught fish with the skin on holds the most appeal, says the chef, who recommends buying the snapper at Osaka Supermarket or Seven Seas Fish Market. Feeling adventurous? Instead of purchasing gnocchi, spend two hours creating your own, he encourages, adding “it will bring you happiness with every mouthful.”

Main dish

Shellfish vinaigrette

INGREDIENTS 1 yellow eye snapper 12 mussels 4 spot prawns Spring vegetables (1 bunch carrots, asparagus) 1 pkg gnocchi

INGREDIENTS ½ cup spot prawn heads and shells 1 shallot 1 tsp tomato paste ¼ cup vermouth Splash of brandy Splash of white wine vinegar ¼ cup lemon juice Herb stems from fine herbs 2 Tbsp fine diced tomato & fennel ¼ cup grapeseed oil ¼ cup olive oil Sea salt Pepper Pinch of smoked paprika

Have fish monger scale the snapper and remove fillets (1 fish will provide 4 four-ounce portions). Score the skin side with a sharp knife, pat dry with paper towel and season. Preheat skillet, add a tsp. of grapeseed oil and allow pan to just start smoking. Sear skin side down, adjusting heat to cook until golden. Lightly cook flesh side, add spot prawns and mussels, and finish in 350˚C preheated oven for 3-4 minutes. Finish with a knob of butter and a squeeze of lemon. Save any juices to add to vinaigrette. Bring salted water to a boil, and blanch vegetables until desired doneness. Drain, season and add a pat of butter. Blanch gnocchi following instructions. Drain and oil lightly. Heat skillet and pan sear, adding a knob of butter. Season when golden. Drain on paper towel.

Heat a skillet and add grapeseed oil. Add shrimp shells and sauté. Add tomato paste, deglaze with vermouth and brandy. Add remaining oil and simmer for 10 minutes on low. Remove from heat and let steep for 1 hour. Strain, add diced tomato and blanched diced fennel. Add lemon juice and a splash of white wine vinegar and season.

PHOTOS LISA KING

Place the snapper in the centre. Stir the vinaigrette, and using a spoon, scoop out some of the diced vegetables and drizzle around the fish. Place mussels and spot prawns to one side, and dress with the vegetables.

Serve and drink with a Joie rosé, or Gray Monk pinot gris, or any white wine with some acidity, to balance the richness.

Ultherapy is a non-surgical treatment for the face and neck that uses ultrasound to lift and tone loose skin without any downtime. The Trend for This Season... Colour! by Erica Hughes

And ladies, it’s back to the bright 80’s.

R

emember the head bands, the torn up Flash Dance sweatshirts and the bad perms? Well those trends, thank goodness, are NOT back. Coloured denim, which I personally love, is everywhere. Most premium denim lines are displaying an array of colours from neon green to soft peach. AG and Fidelity are two brands that are doing a great job with this trend. There are a couple of ways to wear the coloured bottoms: 1 If you want to keep it on the subtle side, go for a darker denim like raspberry or indigo blue and pair it with a white t-shirt and a great pair of flats. This a perfect daytime look. 2 If you are feeling more daring, colour blocking is huge this season. Purchase the neon green bottom and pair it with a shocking pink blouse and a bright pair of flats. If you want to wear heels with this look, keep them in a neutral tone. 3 Make sure that your wardrobe includes a straight leg, preferably a skinny, when

purchasing a bright coloured bottom. And for those ladies out there who don’t think they can do a skinny, it’s time to get with the program and just wear a longer top that covers your butt and hips. 4 Another trend this season is the ring. As Beyonce sang, “if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it.” Sport a big, bold ring. Low Luv, a jewellery line designed by model Erin Wasson, has some amazing rings this season. Low Luv looks expensive, but have no fear, it’s very reasonable. Caracol, a Montreal-based jewellery line, has great big coloured rings so affordable you can buy more than one and mix it up. While we’re on the subject of jewellery, don’t forget to wear some necklaces. The layered look is still very strong and a great look is to mix gold and silver together – a must for this season.

Richelle from Get Dressed is wearing (FROM TOP COUNTER CLOCKWISE):

A Zen B 100% silk top $160, Low Luv Gold Cross $135, Low Luv Silver Necklace $80, Low Luv Bangles Silver/Gold $90 B Free People Top $80, Bauxo Necklace $34, Karen Telio Belt/Necklace $105 C Bardot Pink Top $85, Cream Scarf $68, AG Stilt in creamsicle $225 INSET Caracol Rings $10 to $14

So to look as great as Richelle this season, get into a pair of coloured denims and a bright coloured top. Accessorize with a big bold ring and gold and silver necklaces and you’ll be ready to go anywhere.

Molly Parker caused shock waves portraying a necrophiliac in Kissed and years later, her television series Swingtown was axed by CBS for being too racy. Now the B.C. native is back in the headlines as a teacher and mother starring opposite actor Josh Lucas in NBC’s legal thriller The Firm, as Abby McDeere. Based on John Grisham’s bestseller, The Firm, the series follows Abby’s husband, John McDeere, who opens up his one-man firm after bringing down a Memphis law firm that fronted for the Chicago mob. “I’ve never been in a thriller-based television show before and I was really excited to work with Josh and Juliet Lewis,” says the actress. “Juliet is so fun, so magical and spirited.” The veteran actress has been living in Toronto since last August, when filming for The Firm began. “We finish filming at the end of May and then I’ll head home to L.A.,” Parker adds. “It’s been a little crazy busy.” Parker is an actress who doesn’t take herself seriously; one who chooses not to live in Hollywood’s world of fake compliments; she is, after all, a Canadian — a true West Coast girl who is unpretentious and easygoing. The seasoned actress is also a busy mom to five-year-old William Strummer Bissonnette, by her ex-husband Matt Bissonnette, a director, writer and producer. Parker says they have a great relationship and co-parent their son William very well. “Right now, I work two days a week, which is great for a mom,” Parker says. “Matt is here in T.O., so he’ll pick up William from kindergarten if I can’t. I’m pretty present, although last week’s schedule was pretty grueling.” The talented actress is soon interrupted for a moment by William begging for her attention. He’s hungry. She gently tells William to wait a few minutes, apologizes for the interruption and resumes … without missing a beat. Look asked her how it felt to be described by The Firm’s executive director/writer Lukas Reiter (famed for Law & Order, The Practice and Boston Legal) as “an actress with soulfulness and an intelligence that really comes through in everything she does.” A pragmatic Parker says it’s very nice to hear, but adds: “I’ve been doing this for 20 years now.” The celebrity machine doesn’t interest her in the least. In L.A., Parker says she’s seldom bothered, partly because people don’t recognize her. “I’m not über-famous here, where I can’t do anything without being recognized,” she says, adding she’s called Los Angeles her home for 12 years now. “I’m not into the Hollywood scene.” She admits it’s a little bit of a different story in T.O. >

>“I get recognized more in Canada but I pay as little attention to it as possible.” She tries to get home to B.C. at least twice a year to visit her mom, Susan, and brother, Henry. “I really miss my family, and on a visceral level I miss the landscape of B.C.,” she says. Hollywood soirées might not interest her, but she concedes she does think about what it means to grow old in L.A. In June, the willowy Parker turns 40 – an age that is often feared in Hollywood’s age-obsessed culture. “I’m aware that after 40 there is less work for actresses,” says Parker. “You can’t escape that. However, on a personal level I’m happier in my own skin now than I’ve ever been. I love being a mother and I’m grateful for my career.” She pauses for a few seconds. “I’ve noticed that actors I worked opposite to a decade ago are now cast opposite women 10 years younger than me,” says Parker. “It’s stark and it’s real.” She goes on to say that she saw a documentary called Miss Representation, a film that shows how females are represented in the media. “It explores the impact media has on the perception and expectations of women and it’s not pretty, it’s insidious,” she says. “It’s made me very conscious of what opportunities there are for actresses over 40.” However, the affable Parker says she defines herself by more than her career. For instance, she could go on and on about a foundation that is dear to her heart, Population Services International. The non-profit organization improves the lives of women in developing countries, through education and promoting health by distributing condoms, insecticides treated nets and contraceptives. “It’s really important to me to support education for girls in Third World countries,” Parker says. “Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter once wrote a great article saying that if you educate impoverished women, not only do they lift up their families, they lift up their communities and cultures.” Parker is refreshingly honest and easy to chat with, although she guards her privacy with zeal. When asked if there is a new man in her life, she politely refuses to talk about it. As an actress who has garnered tremendous respect and admiration from both her peers and fans, it’s a little surprising to find out Parker didn’t initially intend to pursue an acting career. Born in Maple Ridge, she grew up on a commune in Pitt Meadows with her parents and younger brother Henry. She started off studying ballet from the age of three to 17. It was her uncle Mark Wilson (her mother’s brother and an actor in his own right), who sparked her interest in acting.

Above The actress in her current role as Abby McDeere, with co-star Josh Lucas, who plays her husband Mitch McDeere, on NBC’s legal thriller The Firm. Top right best known to American TV audiences as the widow Alma Garret in the cable TV series Deadwood. Above right at her temporary home in Toronto during filming of The Firm.

“Mark was the only actor I knew, so from the time I was little I was aware it was something you could do as a career,” she says. “It wasn’t until I was about 17 that I considered it — which is funny considering in high school, I felt most at home in drama class.” It wasn’t until Wilson asked his niece if she wanted to audition for his agent that she finally took acting seriously. She chuckles saying she actually went to the audition sporting blue hair. “I remember working on a monologue from The Diary of Anne Frank … I mean really dark, right?,” she says. “At the end of my audition, the talent agency told me they weren’t signing any young actresses. A few weeks later a new agent came on board and he hired me. ... I’ve been with Murray Gibson for more than 20 years now.” Yet, for two years, Parker didn’t receive a single acting job. “The agency was ready to get rid of me but Murray really believed in me and sent me to Vancouver’s Gastown Actors’ Studio,” she says. “I studied there for five years and I’m still friends with all 15 of my fellow acting students.” Soon after, television roles started

pouring in. She moved to Toronto for a few years before heading to L.A. As the budding actress gained momentum in her career with plum roles such as Kissed, which earned her a 1997 Genie award for best actress, she won critical praise for her courage in tackling difficult roles. She was also a female rabbi, Ari Hoffman, in Six Feet Under, and then in 2008, she starred in the CBS show Swingtown. “Swingtown shouldn’t have been on a conservative channel such as CBS,” she says. “It was a situation where a female executive at CBS loved the project and really pushed to have it air. I think it would have done really well on Showtime, because it really was a great show, smartly written.” Her life-changing moment was her starring role as the widow Alma Garret in HBO’s television series Deadwood. “Deadwood gave me a chance to work outside of Canada,” she says. If there’s a thread that runs through her extensive body of work, it’s that she isn’t afraid to tackle complex or controversial roles. Currently, she has three upcoming films, including: Trigger, opposite Tracey

Wright, That’s What I Am, with Ed Harris, and Oliver Sherman, starring opposite Donal Logue. She also appears in an indie film called The Playroom. “It was a super low budget movie and I’m really excited about it,” she adds. “I play opposite John Hawkes, who starred with me in Deadwood. The Playroom centres on a very dysfunctional family of six.” When asked about directors she appreciates today, Parker says she especially admires Jim Jarmusch, a New York independent filmmaker who rose to fame in 1985 for Stranger than Paradise. “I’ve been a fan of his work for years and I’d love to work with him, his movies are funny and smart,” she adds. Meanwhile, when she has any downtime, Parker loves to read and putter in her garden, something she’s been missing since being in T.O. “I have a great vegetable garden in L.A. that is really going to need some tender care when I return,” she adds. desert delights A new generation of sun seekers is rediscovering Palm Springs as a treasure trove for mid-century modern architecture, furniture and design.

ore than gated communities and golf courses, California’s desert playground is home to a stellar collection of classic mid-century modern architecture, furniture and design. Palm Springs has its own brand of modernism, known as desert modernism. Notable for its clean lines and contemporary materials, extensive use of glass, deep overhangs and indoor-outdoor spaces, this style of architecture that proliferated in the 1950s and 1960s is enjoying a renaissance, finding fans among a new generation of vacation home buyers enamoured with the mid-century design esthetic of “less is more.” Frank Sinatra and friends frolicked here at their hideaway homes, but even before the Rat Pack partied in this resort town, the “two-hour rule” of Hollywood studios put Palm Springs on the map as a star-studded retreat. Sun and seclusion, and an easy drive from Los Angeles, were the attractions for actors whose contracts required they be always on call. >

> Today, cheap fares and daily direct flights from YVR to Palm Springs International Airport have created a new two-hour rule for vacationers from the Vancouver area who can be poolside beneath the palms in under three hours from takeoff to touchdown. Palm Springs, too, has attracted the interest of style aficionados like California designer Trina Turk, whose casually sophisticated clothing and homewares collections draw constant inspiration from the cocktail party and poolside lifestyle of the desert. And Jonathan Adler, The New York-based potter and furniture designer whose retro chic décor for the Parker Palm Springs luxury hotel has helped define a new wave of desert modern style. It’s a look that has found fans here at home, like Sarah Bancroft, co-founder of Vitamin Daily, Canada’s online guide to the good life. “It’s not that kind of hard modernism,” says Bancroft, who has returned from Palm Springs visits with

fashions and furnishings for the office and home. “There are great splashes of colour. And the whole Jonathan Adler influence. The great throw cushions. It’s fun. Our decor at home is very similar to that. It’s graphic but it has some playful, whimsical elements.”

With husband Murray, a chef and food stylist, Bancroft is now looking to buy a vacation home in the desert for the couple to share with their two young daughters, Emmanuelle and Charlotte. What has their attention are the area’s coveted “Alexanders.” Built by the Alexander Construction Co. in the mid-’50s to mid’60s as affordable housing for the masses and numbering about 2,200 in the Palm Springs area, these modest tract homes feature open plans and a contemporary look. They’re highly sought after by modernist lovers and thanks to the U.S. market crash, savvy shoppers are scooping them up starting in the $200,000 to $300,000 range. For the Bancrofts, when they find their vacation retreat, furnishing the home will be half the fun. “There is so much amazing mid-century furniture because the houses have traditionally been sold furnished,” says Bancroft. “Every new homeowner believes they’re an interior designer,” and

so it’s out with the old, in with the new, and truckloads of mid-century modern furnishings and art in mint condition end up at consignment stores like the Estate Sale Co. and in the boutiques and galleries of Palm Spring’s uptown design district. Vancouver couple Amanda Ross and Neal McLennan recently bought and restored a 1957 Alexander in Palm Springs’ Sunmor Estates. The threebedroom, two-bathroom home is an iconic butterfly design by architect William Krisel. The couple, both editors at Western Living magazine, have filled their home with mid-century modern finds. They hired Vancouver design duo Johnson Mcleod to shop locally to prep their place in time for Spring Break vacationers. Rental income helps this family of four afford their getaway. In their hip hideaway, Marcel Breuer table, chairs and stools share space with copies of iconic Bertoia chairs and a Saarinen table. In the living room, a 12-

foot painting in bright, bold colours that the couple commissioned Ian Mcleod to create “really captures the whole ethos of Palm Springs,” says Ross. Another Vancouver couple will soon start work on a more ambitious modernist home project, the restoration of what desert locals are calling the Lost Krisel — a rare custom home design by the revered desert modern architect, who only recently verified its existence. Vancouver West Side residents David and Jill Lyall bought the 1960s home at the same time a story about it was going to press for Palm Springs Life’s modernist issue (marking Palm Springs Modernism Week, the desert’s 11-day celebration of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture, which this year attracted record numbers) and have hired hot desert designer Sean Lockyer to restore the house to its former glory, says their agent, Corinne Zajac. For those who can afford it, buying an architectural gem in the desert is a sound investment, says house hunter Bancroft, but more than that, “it’s an investment in lifestyle — and health and well-being. There are only so many months in a row you can go without sunshine and warmth and exercise in the outdoors.” ●
