Canadian Mental Health Association

Our work in the community

Over the past few years, the need for mental health support has been amplified and the gaps in services became chasms At CMHA, we responded to the need by increasing our scope of programs and services and offered them in varying formats to best suit and reach the members of our community. Over the last two years, our low or no cost counselling program added virtual or walk in sessions. We also initiated a mobile civilian led team that responds to crisis calls related to mental health and/ or substance use on the North Shore. Peer Assisted Care Team (PACT) launched on Nov 4, 2021, and to date, we have fielded over 670 calls for help It is available Thursday Sunday 6 p m 12 midnight in English and Farsi

Another exciting social innovation that is coming in the spring of 2023 is Recovery College This in person and virtual program is being offered in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health’s Consumer Involvement and Initiatives Program and CMHA Vancouver Fraser. Recovery College will provide an innovative learning space where anyone can access free courses, webinars, workshops, and events to learn, gain new skills, and connect with others in their community

Through supportive housing programs, our youth recreation program, weekly social support groups led by peers, low or no cost counselling, peer support, indigenous community wellness, and employment programs, we support those living with mental illness to navigate their road to recovery.

Testimonial

Outreach Client and recent refugee: Bita is a CMHA Outreach Worker The client is describing the relief at knowing she wouldn’t have to go through the pain of retelling her story again

“My purpose is not to say what services and help Bita gave me. The money for the room rent, the bus ticket, or even the biscuit she gave me at the last moment were not material; they were love and support They were humanity ”

Recent Story

“When thinking of ‘ success ’ stories, I immediately think of two young women in the Steps group One had been in the group for the past two years and the other joined us halfway through this session Both struggle with social anxiety as well as depression, and usually keep to themselves out of school. Though they both go to the same high school, they are in different grades and had never met before. They now are extremely close friends that hang out often and offer wonderful mental health support to each other ” Elysia Dalgarno, STEPS Program Coordinator

ZAP (Zoom Adult Program)

Employment Support

Information and Advocacy Program

Mobile Multi Sensory Room a multi sensory environment on wheels that can be used by children, young adults and the elderly, in schools and more

Testimonial

The NSDRC is an integral part of the North Shore community and our Information and Advocacy Program is an important area of our organization This program is a resource for information about programs and services for people with disabilities, their caregivers and families Serving people of any age, with any

disability, this program provides assistance in areas such as completing applications for disability benefits and advocating for people whose applications have been denied, helping with reconsiderations Here is a story of a recent beneficiary of our services:

“I am writing to express my appreciation for the North Shore Disability Resource Centre’s Information and Advocacy program. This past spring, I received notice that my application for CPP disability benefits was denied. I was very disillusioned with the process and worried about my future because I have a serious medical condition that makes it impossible for me to work. The government gave me a limited time to appeal the decision so I contacted the NSDRC and spoke to an advocate who, for no charge, confidently pursued the reconsideration appeal on my behalf. In the end, my appeal was successful and I was granted disability benefits which was a huge relief for me There is no way I could have done it all by myself. The NSDRC’s Information and Advocacy program is a vital service for people like me in the community who have limited means and are facing disabling illnesses while having to deal with a difficult and specialized appeal processes for disability benefits ”

“2017, my body and mind were overwhelmed with loss and grief. My husband died with cancer in 2018. My mom died with

metastatic breast cancer in 2019. In August 2019, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer to my lungs The idyllic future I had envisioned in retirement was lost. In February 2020, I lost me. I had been in hospital for influenza and complications of my cancer In that darkness, I remembered the Paul Sugar Palliative Support Foundation I picked up the phone and called I was encouraged to come in as soon as I could. Twenty minutes later, I arrived at the Centre and met with Dr Marylene I was told “ we are here for you. ” The compassion that day brought renewal. I reconnected with Dr Paul Sugar, a person with unwavering passion and commitment. The best! I had received “just in time” support. I was embraced as a human being and guided with a holistic approach to self care that complements the medical journey. Cancer is in my body; it is currently part of me The Centre’s professionals and volunteers walk with me on a divergent, complicated path of illness and healing They continue to provide support and counselling grief and loss, meditation, reflexology, massage, conversations, connection, education for advance care planning, phone calls, home visits, appointment help and consultation with other medical professionals I have met wonderful people at the foundation, some who have now come and gone What a privilege to have shared in their journey

With gratitude to the people at the Centre. You have clearly let us know “We Matter ”

Kelly, Manager, Fund Development, Avalon Recovery Society

A recent story

The Seniors’ Activity Centre’s meal program, Feed The Need, began as the COVID 19 pandemic brought to light a genuine need among this community’s most vulnerable seniors, who lacked the means to access regular meals

An initial $100,000 matching donation was provided by the Ian and Rosemary Mottershead Fund, at the West Vancouver Foundation in November 2020, in response to a need identified during the COVID 19 Pandemic Since then, the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre continues to serve 300 meals per week to vulnerable seniors in West Vancouver $270 can feed one senior for three months. Even the smallest gift can make an impact. Last year $75,000 was raised for the Feed the Need program, through Give Where You Live, and this year we’re hoping to raise even more!
