Pattra 2014

Editor’s Note

Dear Readers, Let’s start with a question, what is the meaning behind the word, Pattra?

Pattra is a Sanskrit word, which means leaves. During the Buddha’s time, the society used to write on dry leaves. Like the paper in the modern days, they were used to record and pass down knowledge and narrations of valuable information such as the teachings of Buddha. Therefore, this history was being used as a metaphor to bring Pattra to proliferate Buddhist practice in our daily life. With the meaning of Pattra in mind, we decided on the theme ‘Grateful’ as we want the readers to explore further on this topic. Being grateful is a feeling of appreciation of one’s surroundings which leads to one’s contentment. In this edition, we want to share some stories, experiences, and activities with a hope that it will inspire the members of NTUBS to uphold this moral practice. Lastly, I want to thank all of the publication committee members who had contributed during the process, and also for main-committee of NTUBS who had given supportive feedbacks for Pattra. Enjoy this newsletter. We welcome your comments and suggestions for the betterment of our publication newsletter in the future. May you be well and happy. With Metta,

Shienny

31st Main Committee Message ZE YONG

President

3rd year in NTU, 3rd time joining NTUBS as a committee. Looking back, I am really lucky to chance upon NTUBS Welcome Tea and became a committee member. It has been an enriching journey for me, one that allowed me to learn and grow. The people here at NTUBS are friendly and caring, just like how home feels like. As the president of this society, I sincerely wish that NTUBS always maintains its uniqueness as a family, and never lose track of its objective of propagating the Dharma. Together, we shall follow the Buddha’s path and strive on with diligence!

JOSEPHINE

Vice President - Event

Time really flies, and without realizing, another semester has passed. Marking my third year in NTUBS, despite the hectic, often tiring and difficult times, the journey has been nothing short of rewarding. Personally, these times has served as a time for me to reflect. With the presence of numerous responsibilities, I think sometimes it is easy to take things for granted. However, NTUBS has constantly reminded me to be grateful for the opportunities that I had and the good and caring people surround me. By realizing the Dharma, it also helps me to stay humble and encourage me to learn more, be it from the Sangha, NTUBS members or the activities that we organized. Therefore, I would like to thank everyone’s hard work and contributions in shaping NTUBS to become such a special place for all of us. I also hope that in the future through the Dharma and fellowship, we can continue to thrive in this NTUBS family.

BENNY

Vice President - Dharma

RIZKY

Honorary General Secretary

My university life would not have been this colorful, had I not joined NTUBS in my first year of study at NTU. I decided to join NTUBS two years ago due to my huge interest in Buddhism, but the things that keep me being in touch with the society are beyond that. The warmth and the joy that I felt when I was preparing, executing, or attending the events held by NTUBS really remind me of the Buddha’s words on cultivating a good friend. In one of the suttas, the Buddha said, “Cultivate a friend whose ways are seven. What seven? He gives what hard to give, does what is hard to do, bears what is hard to bear, he confesses his secrets and keeps your secrets, in times of trouble he does not abandon you, and he does not despise you when you are down.” (AN 7.35). And after having pondered on those words, I have come to know that actually I have cultivated a lot of good friends around me.

I am delighted to get another chance to serve NTUBS 31st Management Committee as Honorary General Secretary. Being one of the coordinators, working together with different portfolios under support team was an interesting challenge. Though there were mistakes made along the way, these helped me to become a better person. Nonetheless, I believe that support team is giving their best in supporting NTUBS activities, and I hope that our current members will benefit from these activities, while learning Dharma and having fun together.

XIN WEN

Honorary Treasurer

NTUBS is a very unique and bonded society. This attracts me to continue to serve as main committee member. I have joined NTUBS for 3 years, the first year as a Fellowship sub-committee member, second year as the Fellowship Director and the third year as the Honorary Treasurer. The spiritual friendship among all the people is so strong that they wouldn’t be hesitant in giving out a helping hand. There are always laughters and non-stop conversations at every meal gathering. Also, everyone is always very generous in sharing their Dharma knowledge, which benefits a lot of us. I wish NTUBS will maintain this culture and always bring the warmth and the sense of belonging to everyone.

31st Main Committee Message FREDDY

Marketing Director

NTUBS feels like one warm big family. I know people have said it a million times, but it doesn’t make it any less true. The care that I get from its people is not something I can easily find anywhere else. It gets really busy at times, but it does get easier when the people around you care about your well-being. Learning and growing together with these people make me happy to be a part of NTUBS.

Event Director

CHUN HEE

When I am writing this message, I have been in NTUBS for almost one and a half year. What makes this society great is the awesome people we have here! I feel that there is hardly any other societies that have such a strong bonding like what we have. The way we deal with things is different as well. We do things not for the sake of doing it. We do it for people, we think for people and we always have fun when we work. What could be better than joining NTUBS as a management committee member? And I also realized that I have so many things that I can learn from these awesome people and I am very grateful for that. NTUBS HO SAY!

Dharma Propagation Director

ANDY

Joining NTUBS again in my second year is one of the best decisions I have ever made in NTU. During my first year, I was able to make friends with good people and learn things in many aspects, thanks to the conducive environment of the club; nice people, nice activities, nice seniors to guide. Having had a wonderful 1 year in NTUBS, I decided to join as a Management Committee this year to contribute more to the club and its members. Realizing the contenment I felt from planning an event, I decided to take up the Management Committee position this year. More planning, hence more enjoyment.

Metta Director

SI HUI

The best memory of my university life would definitely be the time spent in NTUBS. After a year in NTUBS, I feel a strong sense of belonging to this second home. Therefore, I am really grateful to have the opportunity to contribute back to NTUBS this year as part of the 31st Management Committee. I sincerely hope that we can bring more members closer to this family and extend our care to all NTUBS members. I love NTUBS, my home, my family.

Public Relation Director

MARTIN

Initially, in my first year, I had my share of doubts in joining NTUBS, as I was only a Buddhist by birth and did not have much knowledge that enticed me in joining the society. However, a senior convinced me to join and a lot had happened since then. Over the course of one year, I have lost track of how much I have grown and benefited from the experience. I picked up numerous skills, from how to work with others, how to plan and conduct an event up to how to speak in front of the public, and learned the beauty of Dharma in the process. By taking up the challenge of becoming a main committee member, I hope to improve and impart the same feeling and experience to all of you guys while having fun in the midst of this tumultuous university life. In final note, may you be well and happy!

31st Main Committee Message ARYANI

Fellowship Director

Though I have only joined NTUBS for several months, I feel that NTUBS is more than just an ordinary CCA. NTUBS is a medium to contribute ourselves, to give our maximum. NTUBS is a warm family for everybody who is in it. NTUBS is also a place where we can learn many things that we cannot find in any courses in NTU. I wish all of NTUBS family to be well and happy, may NTUBS family always be strongly bonded.

JEFFERSON

Business Director

I used to think that university life, especially in NTU, will be a very tough and volatile one. Thus, I joined NTUBS merely because I hoped that NTUBS will be able to give me spiritual booster when I undergo my lowest point. Now, almost 6 months after I joined NTUBS, I realized that NTUBS has far exceeded my expectation of just being a spiritual booster. NTUBS has given me a very valuable opportunity to be exposed to a professional yet a fellowship based working style that matured me in many ways. Even though there were hard times between hectic life as NTU student and my duty in NTUBS, I found out that there will always be a dedicated team consisting of all the main committee members who are very supportive. I don’t regret and I am very proud to be part of NTUBS, particularly the 31st Management Committee!

IVAN

Resource Director

I have been with NTUBS for more than 1 year, as a member of this big committee. When I was first in NTUBS, I treated it as a platform for me to adopt skills and learn knowledge that cannot be found in the academic life. Now, I see NTUBS as the second priority of mine in the University, after my studies. Why? When I am working as a committee member or take part in NTUBS activities, I feel the sense of belonging. The spirit of helping and caring for each other is something that I could not find in any other clubs or societies that I have joined. Also, the dharma that I have learned is the knowledge that is able to convince a free thinker like me, to apply it in my daily life. In short, NTUBS is a unique society that is able to bring to you the feeling of “home”. Come and see how we work! Ehipassiko!

LUAN

Orientation Director

Joining NTUBS as an Event sub-committee member in my second year, I was impressed with the hard work, high responsibility and dedication of all the main committee members to their work. I also felt a close bonding among them, strange yet very familiar. Now I move a little bit further as a part of the main committee, I gradually feel the origin of such bonding, and discover a new aspect of NTUBS, letting people develop their potentials. With half of a year to go, more things are waiting for me to discover, to answer my own questions about NTUBS.

SHIENNY

Publication Director

Getting to know many friends who want to learn and practice Buddhism in NTUBS is a great opportunity since my first year in university. I am not only able to hear meaningful sharing but also share my experience at the same time. It is two ways of communication that makes this society a friendly and supportive environment. It is a fruitful experience and I hope this culture will last longer and able to give meaning towards others.

NTUBS Investiture 2013 by Chew Ze Yong

Management Retreat 2013 by Jefferson

Song singing session during the retreat Handover from NTUBS 30th president to NTUBS 31st president

Investiture is always an event of mixed feelings. On one hand, it marks the end of yet another glorious chapter of NTUBS; on the other, it represents the beginning of a brand new year for all of us. In order to remind us about the importance of Dharma, our staff advisor, Prof Tan was invited to talk about ‘Dharma, a Way of Life’. It was followed by the presentation of certificates as well as the passing down ceremony. The former served as an appreciation for the 30th committee who served us with all their commitments and dedications, while the latter, signified the formal handing over of responsibilities to the 31st committee. Alongside the responsibilities were the trust and strong fellowship among all the existing NTUBS members, it was a moment of great significance for many of us. With this momentous start, may NTUBS be always successful in the propagation of the Dharma.

Management Retreat 2013 was a very successful camp organized by our outgoing MC to prepare the newly elected ones with necessary skills to serve NTUBS. There were fun yet meaningful activities such as interview workshop, public speaking workshop, discussions, and games. These activities equipped and bonded the 31st Management Committee to step up and to proliferate a new breath of fellowship traits back to the whole NTUBS family. Looking back, I am very grateful to have this as the first camp in NTUBS so I was ablie to know more about Buddhism and NTUBS as early as possible.

NTUBS Dharma Class I, II, and III

NTUBS MEDITATION CLASS

by Robert Limanto

Venerable K. Rathanasa ra

The Dharma classes were really fun and useful. They have enriched my dharma knowledge and helped me one step closer towards happiness. The speakers talked about the beauty of living with Dharma and showed us some examples of dharma in our daily life which made it easier for us to understand the dharma. After the classes I realized learning Dharma is different with learning subjects in school. There might be some constraints of time and place to practice what we have already learnt at school. While Dharma practice can be done anytime and anywhere and it can be learnt in simple and fun ways.

Bro. Han on So eh Kw The meditation class led by Bro. Kweh Soon Han this semester helped me gain a clearer understanding of Buddhist practices. The class looked into the different objects of meditation for Buddhists. Bro. Kweh explained that the Buddha skilfully introduced a variety of meditation objects to suit different practitioners’ abilities and preferences. For example, while observing the breath would suffice for some people, others might prefer to contemplate a quality such as loving-kindness. Bro. Kweh explored each of the techniques, including some lesser-known ones like reflections on the impurity of the body. From the class, I gained a better understanding of meditation.

NTUBS Committee Day by Handoko

Committee day was such a great day for me because I got a lot of experiences and fun from the games. I also had a better chance to know more about NTUBS committee members. Moreover, I was also able to gain more understanding about Buddhism when we visited the temples, accompanied by main committee member who explained many things about Buddhism. I would like to say thank you to all committee members who planned such an amazing Committee Day!

A Beautiful Mind, this movie is a great one. I was astonished by the story, the ups and downs of the main character’s life. I was thinking back about my first impression of John Nash, a Nobel laureate, whom I felt jealous of how successful he was. But the movie completely changed my mind when I realized how tough the path he walked through to get the honor was. Everyone is unique, this was a lesson Image Credit : I learned from the movie, Wikipedia - A beautiful Mind where nobody but myself can walk through my life regardless how tough it is, and with determination, we shall achieve success. The sharing session after the movie was wonderful when you actually can learn more from what others learned from the movie.

Playing games during Exam Supper Token of Appreciation presented by NTUBS President

From this Dharma Talk, I understand the importance of balancing both academic and spiritual life. When one is involved in both different sides, one should not be attached to only one or another. Instead, one should try to maintain the balance of both and to follow the middle path. I consider myself to be lucky that I have a bunch of spiritual friends in NTUBS, who are not only friends with whom I can study together or help each other when problems arise, but also friends who encourage each other through dharma.

Food and drinks prepared by Metta Team

I have joined exam supper for around five times since I started to join NTUBS in my second year. This event is held in every semester before the final exam begins. The food has a lot of variety and of course it is edible and incredibly nice. There are also entertaining games and performances by the committee members that are really refreshing for my mind. So basically we play and sing together, and not forgetting the goodie bags distributed at the end of the event. The stuffs inside goodie bags are all very useful before or during the exam. For me, this is the most awaited event in every semester before I actually start my war.

NTUBS Little Bodhi Outing by Dorothy

COMING UP SOON CAMP NIRVANA SINGAPORE (CNS) 29 July - 1 Aug 2014

Camp Nirvana Singapore is an annual Freshman Orientation Camp organized by the Nanyang Technological University Buddhist Society for students who are new to NTU and Buddhism.

A kid from LBSCC

Having volunteered at the Little Bodhi Outing (LBO), I have learnt many valuable lessons that are applicable to our daily lives. No man is an island. The heartwarming interaction and simple fun with the kids had undoubtedly lifted our spirits and spiced up our day. Though time passed us quickly, the few hours of outing was definitely a fruitful and memorable one. I’m sure the kids had as much fun as we volunteers did. My kid, Chloe, is a chatterbox just like me and we talked all the way from the Little Bodhi Student Care Centre (LBSCC) to Hort Park and she slept on me throughout the bus journey back. Apparently, the tremendous transformation of the initially bubbly volunteers to the subsequently shagged souls was also a testament to the gargantuan effort put in by all the volunteers. LBO has surely widened my horizons and opened my eyes. I would also like to specially thank all the teachers, my fellow peers and all the kids who have in one way or another formed part of my memory. LBO is definitely a love-sharing-and-spreading tradition that is worth upholding!

BUDDHISM AWARENESS WEEK (BAW) 10 -14 February 2014

Buddhism Awareness Week is an exhibition-based NTUBS special project set to raise awareness and improve the understanding of Buddhism to the public. It will be held at Semester 2, spanning 5 days.

9 STEPS : GRA 1. Take a piece of paper and fold into half.

2. On the inside of the paper, choose a side, write down something/somebody you are grateful for.

3. On the other side, write down something you pledge to do for someone else. To consciously help another person in the similar way you were helped.

JOURNEY OF GRATITUDE :

4 Find two jars and put the other one aside, we will use that later. Put those pieces of paper into a jar and shake it all up.

5. Now pull out a piece, read it and put it up at some place where you will see often e.g. desk, pin-board, refrigerator, bedroom wall, etc.

6. Now you will make an effort wherever you are, to look out for someone that you can help in this instance. Of course should you see someone in need of another kind of help e.g. a friend in need of a listening ear. you will not hesitate to help if you can.

FINAL DESTINATION - FUTURE

BY ILYSA SIM

Being thankful of things past is good but gratitude should take things to what is at present and further to the future. Being thankful for the good things that have happened to you is a healthy way of acknowledging that you are cared for and to be aware that people have made an effort to be kind to you. However, simply being thankful only takes you so far, you say to yourself “Okay, I’m full of thanks to XX for helping me, but what do I do now?” Ensuring that there will be things that you can be grateful for in the future and people to feel grateful about. Creating your happiness. You take charge of your life with the choices you make. And all this starts in the present. You work at being grateful for the things that have been in your life but also how it may continue, change and evolve even to benefit you further and why not people around you as well.

Gratitude of the past, the present and the future The knowing that with this positive attitude, someone somewhere will want to help another due to your influence. Cultivates goodwill, and a compassionate society, keep in mind, change starts with you. The more we feel the more it impacts us enough to be willing to help another in need, to offer our services. Making this a hospitable economy. The world is full of strife as it is, if people are taking action to hurt one another why not take action to be kind to one another? Something as important as simple kindness and gratitude should never be taken lightly. Embrace all the good you can, enjoy the feeling and revel in knowing someone cared.

ATITUDE JARS 7. Once you’ve accomplished that special goal, take another piece of paper, jot down the date and put it into the second jar. -Now, you can look back days, weeks even years from now and be proud of yourself, you are a better person for trying to make someone else’s life easier. 8. Put the paper with your pledge back into the original jar, shake it up, and pick another – repeat the whole process again! - Now every time you look at your gratitude jars you will know there is so much things to be grateful for and that you have made a positive difference in many people’s lives by taking charge of happiness!

WAY OF HAPPINESS

BY KOH JHEE HONG

The practice of gratitude could cure the sufferings that exist within everyone of us. It shifts the way we seek what appears to be happiness for us, the endless cravings for external stimulation and materials, and instead puts us in touch with gifts and blessings already present in our life. When we begin to practice gratitude, there will be a shift in the attitude of negativity to more positive attitudes such as appreciation and caring for others. If there is one thing all human beings long for, it’s happiness. We devote our entire life to pursue what makes us feel good and happy and for most of us that journey never stops. When was the last time we look back and truly appreciate what makes us who we are now? Gratitude comes up frequently in discussion of happiness in physical and mental health. For too long, we have taken what was given to us – no matter how small or big – for granted. This is the wisdom advice that comes to us from the Buddha. It is true that what’s written here is easier to say than to be done. The modern life is so materialized that we are obliviously suffering from its consequences. There is this feeling of “insufficiency” where we are constantly in a state of not having enough or not being enough. This dissatisfaction leads to greed, another origin of suffering. We seek different ways to get more to fill the discontentment within us. You can see why this makes us prey to being manipulated by external forces that tells us the way to fulfill the dissatisfaction and achieve happiness is to acquire or consume their product. This vicious cycle of seeking internal satisfaction from external sources continues and once the pleasure derived, the external stimulation subsides, we find ourselves looking for the next “thing” again.

What immediate benefits do we gain from practicing gratitude? The positive attitude cultivated from the mindstate of being gratitude makes the brain function more harmonized and triggers a series of positive response throughout the body. Being grateful to your parents is not something you do once a year only on the Mother’s and Father’s Days by cooking them meals or doing the house chores (not that you shouldn’t). Being grateful is a continuous effort that can be cultivated through actions such as the LovingKindness meditation, or the Metta meditation. Relax your body and sit quietly, close your eyes and begin the meditation with mindful breathing. Imagine whom you are truly grateful for and take this person to heart. Let your love and appreciation towards them shines. I genuinely believe that the affirmation of what we already have in our life can make us a happier and content person.

Be grateful to your mother and father, be grateful to those worthy of gifts. Pay them with homage and honor. Train yourself to be grateful, compassionate and sympathetic. Only then can you spread the good influence of those lessons to others.”
