You can get past-year examination papers but not the answers The Library uploads past-year exam papers from most schools online. Go to Exam Papers on our website. They are available in PDF for download. There are no solutions or answers provided.

With the Library Toolbar installed in your browser, you are just one click away from accessing library resources and services.

The toolbar has an assortment of library resources and services out of which a few have been highlighted below to showcase the real power of the library toolbar. The toolbar also provides access to the library blogs and social media tools through which you can engage with us.

full text: If you usually start off your search for articles/papers/e-books from Google or academic publisher websites such as Springer, you might find the articles/papers/e-books but would be asked to pay for the article. In many cases, the Library would already have subscriptions to these journals which you can read for free. You don’t need to log in to the Library to find out, just click the full text button and it will lead you to the full text if we have a subscription. Google may help to locate the resources but our Library can help you save money by providing access.

Locate@Library: While checking out Amazon or publisher websites for new titles in your field, you might wonder whether the Library has a copy of this book or AV material. Locate@Library would help you to find that information without repeating the search in the library website. Just highlight the title, author or ISBN of the book in the current page and click on Locate@Library to check whether the Library has a copy of it. If not, you can recommend the Library to buy it.

Resources: Want to know more about the resources that you can use to successfully complete your research? Don’t look any further, check out the new “Resources menu button” to access library resources like books, databases, e-books and e-journals. This menu also provides access to staff research papers and student theses and FYPs.

Services: Who can help me to move on further with my research? How can I locate the library resources that would help me complete my research? OVERSEAS NEWSPAPERS Whether you are from America, China or Zimbabwe, you can keep up with news in every part of the world. PressDisplay offers instant access to over 1,500 publications from 86 countries in 41 languages.

You can also find foreign news in Factiva.com and LexisNexis Academic.

PRINT NEWSPAPERS If you prefer print, visit the subject libraries at NTU. Different libraries have different subscriptions, so keep an eye out for what’s available at the libraries which you will visit most often.

LOCAL NEWS Factiva.com covers most of the major print and online news providers in Singapore, such as The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao (联合早报), Berita Harian, and Channel NewsAsia.

Another database with local news sources is LexisNexis Academic, which allows you to share direct links to news articles within the NTU community. For example, after you have shared a link to an article in The Business Times, your recipients will just need to click and login with their NTU network account.

VISUAL CONTENT If you need to view the images or layouts of newspaper pages, illustrations, photographs, or advertisements, use Newslink, a database which covers all the newspapers published under the Singapore Press Holdings.

ARCHIVED NEWS History buffs and time travellers will love NewspaperSG, a digital archive of Singapore and Malaya newspapers published between 1831 and 2009. This is made possible by the National Library Board (NLB) of Singapore, with many of the articles viewable from the comfort of your home. Selected articles can only be viewed at the multimedia stations at NLB libraries, which include “articles from third-party news sources (such as Reuters, AFP and AP) that were published during the last 70 years, and articles published after 1989 in Singapore Press Holdings’ newspapers.” More information on the available titles and issues can be found at http://newspapers.nl.sg/

ONLINE NEWS WEBSITES In this digital age, online news is something that we seem to take for granted. Below are some local news websites with free content.

News Reports by Wire/News Agencies

www.asiaone.com

If you have problems finding a specific article in a database, it might be because it came from a wire/news agency.

www.channelnewsasia.com

A wire/news agency is an organisation that supplies foreign news to local news organisations. For example, The Straits Times publishes news reports from wire agencies such as Reuters, Associated Press (AP) and Agence France Presse (AFP). These reports are credited accordingly, sometimes using abbreviations like AP or AFP. In Factiva.com, where there are more than 640 wires, content from wire/news agencies are made available via their original sources. So, if you are searching for a Straits Times article which has an attribution to Associated Press, you have to search under Associated Press and not The Straits Times.

In LexisNexis Academic, you can just search under The Straits Times and the same article can be found.

Thus, keep in mind that different news databases store content from wire/news agencies differently.

The ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide’ to Starting Your Research in Communication Studies

The author of the ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’, Douglas Adams once said, “I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by”.

This may make you laugh now but when you have a paper due and no idea where to start, that very same ‘whooshing sound’ will turn into a cry for help.

NTU Libraries has a wealth of knowledge for Communication students to help with assignments, so when you hear that ‘whooshing’ sound it will be music to your ears.

So here’s a ‘hitchhiker’s guide’ to some databases to help you get started with your assignments.

Communication Research 1. OneSearch is a library tool that enables you to look for books, journal articles and other publications.

2. Communication & Mass Media Complete is an online resource that incorporates numerous journals for research related to communication and mass media.

Advertising and Marketing 1. Warc offers a combination of global marketing strategy and insight, leading advertising trends, and case studies. It also provides in-depth information and cutting-edge thinking in the areas of marketing, advertising, and communications.

2. Passport (GMID) Global Market Information Database is an online business information system providing business intelligence on countries, consumers and industries. It offers integrated access to statistics, reports, topical comments and business information sources.

3. PressDisplay provides access to newspapers and magazines with a simple user interface and easy-to-use navigation tools, displaying them in their original format and layout. It offers instant access to over 1500 publications from 86 countries in 41 languages Learn more about the Singapore media scene from these websites Asian Film Archives http://www.asianfilmarchive.org The Asian Film Archive is a non-governmental organisation founded to preserve the rich film heritage of Singapore and Asian Cinema, to encourage scholarly research on film, and to promote a wider critical appreciation of this art form.

Singapore Media Authority http://www.mda.gov.sg Formed in 2003, the Media Development Authority (MDA) champions the development of a vibrant media sector in Singapore.

Newspapers SG http://newspapers.nl.sg Newspaper SG is an online resource of current and historic Singapore and Malaya newspapers. You can search their digital archives of newspapers published between 1831 to 2009.

SINdie http://www.sindie.sg

3. Coloribus is an advertising archive database with more than 2 million ads collected from around the world.

SINdie is a website on Singapore films, it keeps a keen eye on the people behind these films, with news, interviews and film reviews, providing in-depth coverage of the Singapore film scene.

The SGFilmChannel on Youtube

1. AsiaPacificFilms.com aims to curate and stream culturally and historically significant films from Asia and the Pacific that entertain, educate and inspire viewers to think beyond boundaries.

News Databases 1. Factiva provides news and business information. It covers 10,000 sources from more than 159 countries in 22 languages and offers more than 400 continuously updated newswires, including the exclusive combination of Dow Jones, Reuters, and The Associated Press.

Do You Know?

The New Medical Library The new interim Medical Library, located in Novena Campus, is an integral part of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) community. To prepare students for real clinical settings, the Medical Library will be actively involved with the School’s innovative pedagogic teaching practice of delivering medical curriculum through team-based learning. This methodolgy will also be used in library instruction.

To support the School’s pioneering medical curriculm and research needs, the library’s emphasis on collection building for medical resources (books, journals, audiovisual materials and databases) is geared towards the electronic format. Although the library’s collection will be primarily focused on medical sciences and clinical practices, the library is also building resources that explore the interface between medicine, science, engineering, business and the humanities, underpinning the School’s philosophy of redefining medicine and transforming healthcare. Concurrently, a medical collection is being developed and will be located at the 4th floor at Lee Wee Nam Library.

A permanent medical library at the new Clinical Sciences Building will be completed in 2015.

New Staff Maggie Yin Medical Librarian Assistant Director Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine maggieyin@ntu.edu.sg

Maggie joined the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine as Medical Librarian in March 2013. Maggie’s roles in the Medical Library involve operational responsibilities as well as being the subject librarian for Medicine. She is currently experiencing the challenge of working in a start-up environment, which is in equal parts exhilarating and exasperating. She hopes to settle in happily in the interim Medical Library, ready in July 2013 on Novena Campus and work towards the permanent medical library in 2015.

Maggie first started out as a tax accountant for a large international accounting firm advising corporate and individual clients on their

tax matters. Deciding that a job which combines her love for reading and helping people would be more suited to her, she made a career switch to libraries more than 12 years ago. Since then, she has worked in several libraries encompassing public, school, special and academic libraries and in a variety of roles including setting up and managing small libraries, starting up an information literacy programme at ITE, initiating a corporate blog and managing the digital library web resource pages at NUS Libraries. She is also experienced in moving libraries, having been involved in merging collections from different physical locations.

Maggie obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Murdoch University. She graduated with a MA in 2002 from NUS and an MSc (Information Studies) from NTU in 2006.

Maggie loves to travel and watch films, and is a frequent film festival goer. She also loves browsing at vintage shops, looking at old photographs and memorabilia.

Workshops For Everyone

Signing up for a free library workshop might save you from informationoverload. The Library offers several hands-on workshops to help you navigate the information world. From digging deeper into information using citations, to organizing sources efficiently with EndNote, to presenting your ideas with academic integrity, we are here to help.

Workshops offered by the Library’s Instructional Services Division: Citations for research: Following the breadcrumbs (2 hours) Through hands-on exercises, participants learn to leverage citations, which are like clues that can help to unlock and interpret unfamiliar subjects. You learn about the purpose of references in scholarly works. You go on to explore citations to discover related works and influential research using databases like Scopus and Web of Knowledge.

Academic Writing with EndNote X6 (2.5 hours) Participants learn how to master referencing and proper citation style with the help of EndNote. You are guided through a practical workshop where you can try your hand at building a library of your own references. You go on to create a mock report, insert in-text citations from your EndNote library and generate a reference list.

Academic integrity: Thou shall not steal (2 hours) Participants are engaged in deeper thinking about academic integrity and go away with some practical tips for avoiding plagiarism. Your understanding is tested through a fun quiz and you are given case studies of plagiarism to ponder and discuss.

Detherm on the Web: A Thermophysical Property Database

Imagine having thermophysical data quickly and easily without dusting thick handbooks or visiting many different databases?

Detherm on the web can save your day!

Some of the properties covered by Detherm are phase equilibrium data, vapour pressures, critical data, thermodynamic, transport, surface tensions and electrolyte data. These are created and maintained by subject experts, critical for the needs of apparatus designers and process application engineers.

Besides data, it also contains literature values to track the original experiment, together with descriptors, abstracts and Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) registry numbers.

Although you can search freely from Detherm on the web (http://i-systems.dechema.de), data downloading is chargeable if you’re not signed in at the Research Assistance Desk, Lee Wee Nam Library (LWNL).

Full report can be downloaded in 3 different formats: PDF, HTML and IKC-PPDX which is supported by process simulation packages such as Aspen.

JoVE: The Scientific Video Journal

With the Library’s subscription to Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), you can now look at how experiments are being conducted instead of having to read about them! Indexed in PubMed since 2008, JoVE is a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific video journal that publishes research methods and experimental techniques in both the physical and life sciences. Currently NTU Libraries has subscription to the fields of: Neuroscience Immunity & Infection

In addition to JoVE, there are also other free sources such as SciVee which is a science video sharing website that promotes researchers’ work and collaboration. Videos are created by scientists for scientists and freely uploaded and available.

Bioengineering Clinical & Translational Medicine General topics Through the use of videos, JoVE is able to show how experiments are conducted and this is important as tools and processes get more complicated. To access JoVE, follow the steps below :

The ADM Library: More Than a Home for Books What’s your best memory of the library? Mine is mugging for exams and discovering books I needed but didn’t know I needed.

What’s yours?

Although I cannot dictate how your memories of the library are formed, I would like to offer some ideas: Conducting your class critique Some art students at School of Art, Design & Media (ADM) held their class critique sessions at the library. The assignment set up can be complicated, like a miniature boutique mock-up or simply displaying a handmade book. After the critiques were over, some set ups were displayed for a week more for others to view.

Conducting experiments The Cinema Room is much more than a projection room.

Professor Marijke conducted an experiment exploring the affect of cinematography on audience’s emotions. Students watched a short clip before completing a questionnaire on laptops provided.

Soundscape students used it to install their performance installations and gather feedback from classmates.

Hikayat Mozznusia is a handmade book exploring the relationship between man and mosquito.

Self-made publications

At the study area, a student placed a homemade pinhole camera for an afternoon to capture the motions of users. Another group of students installed small motion-sensor speakers at a book shelf.

These played short music clips when someone passed by. Reactions were then recorded.

Exhibiting your artworks Professor Paul Kohl has been displaying his black and white photographical prints in the library.

We have also exhibited course projects like self-made publications and ADM Magazines.

I believe fond memories are made when there is active participation.

We welcome faculty and students to explore various uses of the spaces in the ADM Library with the Art librarians.

This is a lunar calendar made out of canvas fabric, turning the traditional calendar made out of thin fragile paper on its head.

A Word From the University Librarian

Libraries Build A Sense Of Community Welcome new students and others who have returned from your long vacation! For new students we hope you will spend time in discovering our popular libraries which are set up to support your learning journey in NTU. For returning students, we hope that you will continue to visit and make full use of the resources and services in our libraries as well as in online virtual space. There is always something new to discover in our continuingly developing library system.

Library buildings today are not just places for holding book and media collections. Nor are they merely quiet places for studying. Though libraries continue to provide these functions, they have grown to encompass wider functions to accommodate new ways of learning in a globally connected world.

An Exhibition on Plagiarism & Academic Writing

Students today also come to our libraries for instructional classes where librarians teach important information skills such as conducting thorough literature reviews, using specialized databases, managing research readings, preventing plagiarism and many other skills that support learning and research activities. Our libraries also organize numerous exhibitions and events on topical and interesting subjects, usually in collaboration with students and other external groups. This helps to highlight and promote the use of the resources that our libraries possess.

Libraries also serve as gathering and meeting points. Our libraries are key landmarks where students from all academic disciplines congregate. Here is where the aerospace engineering student meets the English literature student, where freshmen mingle with graduate students and where those seeking inspiration meet with those already well on their way to finishing their theses. Together with rich resource collections and easy access to information services, our libraries are rich in opportunities for collaborative learning and serendipitous encounters.

In other words, our libraries are the natural focus points for students.

The busy activities and everyday happenings in our libraries is a reflection of life on campus. Our libraries are popular and well used and are some of the most frequented places on campus! It is likely that long after students have graduated, memories of their time spent in our libraries by themselves or with their classmates or friends will trigger fond memories of campus life, as we play our role in forming and developing a sense of community in NTU.

Practise Presentation Skills in the Recording Room

In NTU, students can come to our learning commons in Lee Wee Nam Library and Business Library where they can work in small groups in the popular and well-equipped learning pods. There are also many multiple screen computers where individual students or groups can work on bigger screens than their laptops. The Business Library and Art, Design & Media (ADM) Library each has a mini cinema room where groups can gather to watch documentaries or movies. You can create videos for projects or practise your presentation skills in the small recording room at Lee Wee Nam Library. Students are also welcome to use the big video screen at Lee Wee Nam Library to hold short lunch time talks.
