THE ART OF PHILANTHROPY
2023 REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY
Dear Friends,
At North Texas Community Foundation, we are honored to be the place where donors, nonprofits, caring residents, and business and civic leaders come together to address our region’s most pressing needs.
2023 was a watershed year for civic engagement, with local leaders coming together to map the path forward for early education, maternal health, and housing. Thanks to their efforts, our community is creating longterm, sustainable solutions and leveraging opportunities for our rapidly growing community.
Everything we do is made possible by our wonderful fundholders. This year, we welcomed 26 new funds into the NTCF family and we were honored to develop legacy plans for donors whose vision and generosity will support our community long into the future. All told, NTCF donors enabled the Foundation to grant $38 million to highperforming nonprofit organizations in 2023.
Behind these numbers are stories of people who bring tremendous passion to their giving, leveraging their creativity and strategic thinking to help organizations deepen their impact. We are humbled by the positive change created by our donors’ charitable investments.
By working together, we are creating a better future for individuals and communities in North Texas.
Thanks to you, we’re here for good, forever.

How a Community Partnership Increased Pool Access for Youth
Swimming is a quintessential childhood activity. And it’s not just about fun. Access to pools and swim lessons promote physical health and provide life-saving water safety skills.
Unfortunately, many families across Tarrant County lack access to a public pool or affordable swimming lessons. While the City works to develop a longer-term strategy to tackle this challenge, local partners came together to provide children residing in pooldeprived areas with a more immediate option. Upon learning about this issue, NTCF swiftly convened donors and community partners to create a solution.
Although public pools may be scarce, the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth manages swimming pools at locations throughout the city. Furthermore, the Boys and Girls Club

of Greater Tarrant County (BGCTC) serves youth who often reside in neighborhoods without pool access. Within a matter of weeks, agency leaders developed a program through which the children participating in BGCTC programs received access to YMCA pools and swimming instructors, with all costs covered by local donors.
Thanks to our nonprofit leaders and generous donors, the swimming program was a resounding success, with more than 1,100 children receiving complimentary swim lessons and transportation per week.
“North Texas Community Foundation excels in matching donors and nonprofits to make a difference in our community. As former lifeguards ourselves, Lisa and I were particularly grateful for the opportunity to support this swimming adventure!”
Preserving the Treasures of a Fort Worth Landmark
Leonard’s Museum Finds Permanent Home
Once a beloved anchor of downtown Fort Worth, Leonard’s Department Store offered a unique shopping experience to all who visited. Founded in 1918 by brothers Marvin, and Obie Leonard, the store “sold everything to everybody,” making it a local retail giant until 1974.
For the Leonard family, it wasn’t just about making a sale. It was about serving the community. Today, the store’s legacy lives on through the Leonard’s Museum. Thanks to the efforts of Marty Leonard, daughter of Marvin, and Lauren Leonard, granddaughter of Obie, the museum features over 2,000 artifacts, including the “Howdy Neighbor” box sent to Fort Worth newcomers, the original store directory, and a railcar from the original M&O Subway. As one museum visitor who was moved by the memories resurfacing told Marty, “The museum has just about everything except a box of tissues.”
The collection recently relocated from the family-run museum to its forever home at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. The new location will enable the Museum’s tens of thousands of
annual visitors to appreciate the impact of Leonard’s business and civic leadership on Fort Worth’s history.
NTCF was honored to work alongside Marty to create a sustainable and permanent home for the Collection. The Leonard’s Museum Collection Endowment Fund at North Texas Community Foundation will provide perpetual support for the collection and preserve the Leonard’s story.
“North
Texas Community Foundation has been a true partner in helping provide the future of the Leonard’s Museum for years to come by giving it a permanent home in the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.”

City Initiative to Restore Prairie Takes Root
An Intern-Led Project Protects Fort Worth’s Ecological Jewel
The Fort Worth Prairie is one of the rarest ecosystems in North America and home to an array of native plant and animal species. As our region continues to experience rapid growth and development, these landscapes are under increasing threat.
In response, the City of Fort Worth launched the Open Space Conservation Program, an effort to preserve natural areas. The initiative made its first acquisition with the purchase of the 50-acre Broadcast Hill Natural Area. With a $150,000 grant from the Conservation and Environment Fund at NTCF, the City of Fort Worth’s Park & Recreation Department and Open Space Conservation Program partnered to engage three college students undergoing training in natural resources management to prepare the land and trail system for public use.
During the Summer of 2023, interns
Jacob Estes, Paige Priddy, and Kimberly Villarreal dedicated nearly 540 hours in the scorching heat to vegetation surveys, trail mapping, invasive species management and community outreach. Their efforts provided essential baseline data on the ecosystem and biodiversity of the site. The interns also
established partnerships with the Botanic Research Institute of Texas, NexGen, Friends of Tandy Hills, Native Prairies Association of Texas and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Supervisor Michelle Villafranca hopes to make the internship a permanent program, laying the foundation to protect our city’s biome.
“I loved every second I worked out on the trails.
I hope that this internship can continue to live, provide information, and encourage healthy environmental practice within the city of Fort Worth.”

Furthering Family Values
How the Esch Family Gives Together
The Esch family has a longstanding tradition of making charitable contributions together. When considering how to structure their giving, John Esch and his sons, Grainger and Gregor, set up a donor advised fund at NTCF. As a CPA and attorney, John recognized the inherent tax benefits, growth capacity, and strategies offered to expand the fund’s giving potential. The fund also allows the family to make significant contributions to various nonprofits, supporting causes that resonate for each family member.
Gregor Esch, TCU alumni and longtime Board member of Easter Seals of North Texas and Miracle Fields of DFW, was born with cerebral palsy and has provided support for organizations that provide robust services for those with disabilities. Grainger, a local actor and therapeutic clown at Cook Childrens, connects with organizations that address homelessness, environmental protection, and arts for children. John has served on many boards including as Chair of the James L. West Center for Dementia Care and the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation and has particular interest in all levels of education. The Esch family regularly participates in NTCF grant cycles to pool their donations with others and maximize their impact.
In 2021, the family deepened their philanthropic involvement by establishing the Mary G. Esch and Mary N. Esch Endowment Fund for the TCU Burnett Medical School to honor the memory of wife and mother Mary Norwood Esch and John’s mother, Mary Guinn Esch. The fund annually supports the Scholarly Pursuit and Thesis program while offsetting the costs of new student research projects each year.
The Esch family exemplifies the power of giving together to create a legacy that reflects their shared values and strengthens the Fort Worth community they hold dear.
“Philanthropic giving is more a learned trait than an inherited one. It brings great joy to Grainger, Gregor and me to continue to broaden our learning and our activity together through the amazing resources so thoughtfully provided by NTCF.”
JOHN ESCH
