Convocation Weekend 2014

Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor Dear graduates and friends of the University It gives me great pleasure to welcome you back to Newcastle University for Convocation Weekend 2014. That so many of you want to return to visit and reminisce about your time here with friends, and introduce the University to family members, is very pleasing. The affection in which you hold Newcastle University speaks volumes for the experience you enjoyed as a student and the impact it has had on your lives and careers. It is also a credit to the dedication of the academic and support staff who have worked so hard over many years to establish the University’s reputation as a world-class civic university, and to ensure that a Newcastle University degree is synonymous with excellence the world over. I am looking forward to bringing you up to date with our progress and plans for the future. I hope also to have the opportunity to meet as many of you as possible in person throughout the day. Whether you are a regular attendee, or attending for the first time, on behalf of all my colleagues, may I extend to you a warm welcome and my best wishes for an enjoyable and successful Convocation Weekend. Professor Chris Brink, Vice-Chancellor

Welcome from the Chair of Convocation Dear alumni and friends As Chair of Convocation, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Convocation Weekend 2014. This special weekend welcomes all our alumni back to campus, providing you with an opportunity to revisit and re-engage with the University, reconnect with friends and staff, make new acquaintances and get right up to date with the latest developments at Newcastle University. The University alumni relations team has, once again, put together a packed programme of events, themed this year around the University’s internationalisation agenda. As you will see from the programme, Convocation Weekend 2014 offers a whole variety of academic, cultural and social activities for you to choose from or to build your own programme around. In addition, a number of individual reunion groups have planned activities, while many of the individual Schools have prepared stimulating events or talks for us all to enjoy. I would like to draw your special attention to the annual meeting of Convocation at 10am on Saturday morning. Convocation is the statutory body that represents all alumni and ensures that your views and ideas are understood by the University. It provides an opportunity for alumni to discuss matters of current interest and hear the Vice-Chancellor’s report on the latest activities and developments at the University. This year, the Pro-Vice-Chancellors of our three Faculties will also present an insight into each of their faculty’s developments and achievements. This is your opportunity to ask questions or air your views with the University senior management team; so, if you are able to, I would strongly encourage you to attend and participate. On behalf of all alumni, I would like to thank the University and the alumni relations team for hosting and organising our annual reunion weekend. On behalf of the University, I look forward to welcoming you in person at what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding Convocation Weekend. Very best wishes Antony Jones, Chair of Convocation BA (Hons) Politics 1980

The Hatton Gallery has been part of the fabric of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne for over 90 years. During this time, it has occupied a place at the forefront of British Art practice and played an important role in the education of Fine Art students at Newcastle University. Alongside the annual BA and MFA Fine Art degree shows, the Gallery offers a vibrant exhibition programme bringing together loans with its excellent permanent collection. Together with Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, over the next few years, we plan to transform the Hatton into a vibrant gallery space, with a new gallery for Kurt Schwitters’ iconic Merzbarn Wall, a dedicated learning space, and flexible facilities to display the collection and deliver a high-quality creative programme. This year’s Convocation Lecture will be delivered by the award-winning author and broadcaster David Reynolds, Professor of International History and a Fellow of Christ’s College Cambridge, on ‘Britain and the long shadow of the great war’.* In this centenary year, historian and broadcaster Professor David Reynolds explores our long and troubled national memory of the Great War. Drawing on his prize-winning new book The Long Shadow, he shows how our image of the conflict and its meaning has changed significantly over time – through the peace movements of the 1930s and ‘our finest hour’ in 1939–45 to the narratives of pointless slaughter that became prevalent in the 1960s. He also shows how our distinctive view of both world wars has heightened a sense of distance between Britain and ‘Europe’, in ways that endure to the present day. The lecture runs alongside The Britain and The World Conference: www. britishscholar.org/2014-conference * Previously advertised as: ‘Making the World Safe for Democracy: Britain, America and the Legacies of the Great War’.
