Convocation Weekend 2015
convocation 2015
Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor Dear graduates and friends On behalf of everyone at Newcastle University, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Convocation Weekend 2015 for your annual reunion. It’s a well-known fact that many lifelong friendships are forged during our student years, and I am delighted that so many of you look forward to Convocation as an opportunity to meet up with friends and renew your contact with the University. The last 12 months have given us much to celebrate: the latest UK-wide assessment of research performance in the form of REF 2014 ranked Newcastle 16th in the UK for research power with 78% of our research assessed to be world-leading or internationally excellent; the National Student Survey ranked the University joint sixth in the UK for student experience; and the Times Higher Education place us in the top three UK universities, with Oxford and Cambridge, for the quality of our teaching. Recognition of our expertise in ageing came in the form of an announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in December 2014 for a £20 million award towards a National Centre for Ageing Science and Innovation in Newcastle. The Science Central site – which some of you might have visited last year – is the location for the development of a £2 million Smart Grid – technology which enables us to investigate how new and renewable sources of power can be managed at a reasonable cost without making power systems less reliable. Meanwhile, the opening of Professor Sugata Mitra’s School in the Cloud, a virtual learning lab, where children can engage in self-organised learning by connecting with information and mentoring online, which was the result of his TED Prize in 2013, exemplifies our commitment to social renewal. I am looking forward to bringing you up to date with news of these developments, and sharing with you many more of our successes, at our Convocation meeting. Whether you are a regular attendee at Convocation Weekend, or joining us for the first time this year, I look forward to meeting you, and wish you an enjoyable and successful Convocation Weekend 2015.
Professor Chris Brink, Vice-Chancellor

Newcastle University | Convocation Weekend 2015
Welcome from the Chair of Convocation Dear alumni and friends As Chair of Convocation, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Convocation Weekend 2015. This special weekend welcomes all our alumni back to campus, providing you with an opportunity to revisit and re-engage with the University, reconnect with friends and staff, make new acquaintances and get right up to date with the latest developments at Newcastle University. As you will see from the programme, Convocation Weekend 2015 offers a whole variety of academic, cultural and social activities for you to choose from or to build your own programme around. In addition, a number of individual reunion groups have planned activities, while many of the individual Schools have prepared stimulating events, talks or demonstrations for us all to enjoy, regardless of our original degree subject! I would like to draw your special attention to the annual meeting of Convocation at 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon. Convocation is the statutory body that represents all alumni and ensures that your views and ideas are understood by the University. It provides an opportunity for alumni to discuss matters of current interest and hear the Vice-Chancellor’s report on the latest activities and developments at the University. This year, the Pro-Vice-Chancellors of our three Faculties will also present an insight into each of their Faculty’s developments and achievements. This is your opportunity to ask questions or air your views with the University’s senior management team; so, if you are able to, I would strongly encourage you to attend and participate. On behalf of all alumni, I would like to thank the University for hosting and supporting our annual reunion weekend. On behalf of the University, I look forward to welcoming you in person at what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding Convocation Weekend. Very best wishes Antony Jones, Chair of Convocation BA (Hons) Politics 1980

This year’s School of Dental Sciences ‘Founders and Benefactors Lecture’ will be delivered by Professor Jeremy Bagg PhD, FDS, FRCPath, FFPH, Head of the University of Glasgow Dental School and Deputy Head of the School of Medicine. For millennia, humans have coexisted with microorganisms. Their relationship relies on a fragile balance upon which the longterm survival of both is dependent. Despite significant advances in medical science, infectious diseases continue to challenge the human race. This lecture will highlight how this fascinating interaction between humans and microbes has been influenced by medical progress. It will also illustrate, through recent and ongoing events, how susceptible we remain to the threat posed by infectious agents. Jeremy Bagg, Professor of Clinical Microbiology, Chairs the Scottish National Dental Advisory Committee and is Chair of the Steering Group of the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme.

Saturday Afternoon onvocation Lecture C Professor Mona Siddiqui: Veils, Values and Voices – Religion and the Public Space Advance booking required 4.30-6pm At a time when much of the western world is trying to understand and situate the role of religion in the public sphere, Islam has probably become one of the most easily identifiable images of religious life in our urban societies. Yet the visibility of Islam has become problematic for many who see the faith and its adherents as opposed to the freedoms of liberal democracies. Religious pluralism demands an active commitment to certain values and diversity should not mean that as a society, we hold nothing in common. Mona Siddiqui is internationally renowned as a public intellectual and a regular commentator in the media, known

especially for her appearances on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Thought for the Day’. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, holds four honorary doctorates and in 2011, was awarded an OBE for her contribution to interfaith services. In 2014 she spoke on religion and politics at the World Economic Forum in Davos and, in January 2015, she was named in the Debretts 500 list of the most influential people in the UK. Amongst her most recent publications are My Way: A Muslim Woman’s Journey (IB Tauris, 2014), Christians, Muslims and Jesus (Yale University Press, 2013), and The Good Muslim: Reflections on Classical Islamic Law and Theology (Cambridge University Press, 2012). Mona has also held visiting professorships at several Dutch and American universities including a Humanitas Professorship at Cambridge University win 2014.
